About this property

Stunning Ranch Headquarters Log Home

PLEASE READ OUR REVIEWS!!!
This beautifully restored Historic Log Ranch Headquarters sits on 7 acres and is located 9 miles south of Angel Fire just off the road to Ocate, NM in stunning and pastoral Black Lake. We enjoy unobstructed views across several ponds, wetlands, and extensive (thousands of acres) ranch lands which surround the home. Great for bird watching in the summer and during migrating seasons. Elk herds can be seen almost daily in the fields next to the home and in the front yard, as well as bald eagles, ospreys and many water birds visit our private ponds. It is 14 min. highway drive to the upper parking lot at the Angel Fire Ski Area. Secluded and quiet even though it is just off a well-maintained state highway. This is the area that helps give 'Land of Enchantment' its name. The views across the valleys are stunning. The Black Lake area is where the high country scenes from the movie "Lonesome Dove" were filmed. It is truly a pleasure to experience this historic and special property. All this backing up against massive public lands.

This two bedroom one bath 1400 sq. ft. red fur timber home sleeps 5 with one king bed and one queen. There is also one fold-out queen couch. The large combined kitchen and living room offers a wonderful setting for viewing nature and sharing time with family and friends. A new range and dishwasher have just been installed. With a wood stove and multiple bay windows it's bright and cheery in the day time and warm and cozy at night. The home also has high efficiency central heat.

Our guests have said that they cannot describe how wonderful their experience was while staying with us. This is a unique mountain property offering a truly mountain experience.

Perfectly quaint family getaway!!

We had a lovely stay at the Black Lake Ranch! Astounding views of all ranges of wild life. We were a little sad there was no hot tub but a little morning snow made up for it. Absolutely beautiful home & great communication between the owner. So thankful we got to stay here for my Dad’s 62nd birthday!!

Cozy Cabin

The property was lovely! The property manager was helpful and very responsive. The place was clean and spacious. It had everything you could need for cooking. I will say the oven took a while to heat so wasn’t able to use that like I thought, but the other appliances did the trick. Overall, really enjoyed the stay!

Ranch Headquarters

This property is beautiful! Perfect size for our family of 6. Upon arriving we did not have service to access the welcome email. Was able to reach out to owner and given an immediate reply. We saw elk cross the passing each morning and the deer in the front lawn in the evening. Everything you need for your stay is supplied. A short drive to Angel Fire ski resort. Our family will definitely return!

Almost perfect

The place is beautiful! We saw wildlife as soon as we drove up to the place. It was so calm and quiet. The lighting was a little dim at night but in the day with all the natural light it is fine. The shower is super tiny but the hot water is excellent! The kitchen had everything we needed. We did day trips to Red River and Taos and enjoyed the Village of Angel Fire. The cabin is about 15 minutes from town but is a nice drive. The cabin is a perfect spot to relax and be in nature.

Getaway

Loved this property, had everything in the kitchen that you would need. Very comfortable bed!!! Very quite!! Very clean!!! WiFi worked great!!! My only complaint would be that the main bedroom needed room darkening shades, they had blinds on 2 windows, but third window just had curtains and the door curtain let a lot of light in. When I’m on vacation, I don’t like getting woke up early, but this is just my preference. I had extra foil in my supplies and I took care of the windows, thank goodness I had brought some, as I wouldn’t want to use there’s. But I would definitely book this place again!

Escape the heat!

This home is so comfortable and cozy! We enjoyed the cabin for three and one half weeks in July trying to escape the TX heat and it was wonderfully relaxing! Even with NM experiencing one of its warmest summers in quite awhile, we were comfortable without air conditioning. The evenings cooled off nicely and the mornings were crisp! The cabin is eight or so miles below Angel Fire in Black Lake, NM on Rte 120 and very private and easy to find. The cabin is at approximately 8800 ft altitude so take it easy the first day or so! Wi-Fi and TV worked great! Angel Fire has a grocery store that covers all the basics but you will pay for the convenience. If you can bring food, especially meats, fish, it will be more economical. Angel Fire has a farmer market on Sundays during summer and had great veggies etc. if you are planning an extended stay and need more detailed shopping, Taos has an Albertsons and Smiths (grocery stores) as well as Walmart and the drive over is beautiful in spite of road construction going on right now. The home has fantastic views of open meadows and mountains. You will see mule deer, elk, beaver, and so many birds. We had one nosy bear check out our car as well. Thanks for such a relaxing visit!

Rural retreat in natural setting

This property delivered on its description, photos and natural setting. You are truly private at the end of a paved road that becomes gravel in a couple of miles. Very little traffic with the only night noise being that of occasional coyotes howling. This two bedroom (one king and one queen) one-level ranch had everything one needed for a comfortable stay. Its high elevation provided cool temperatures at night even on warm days. Opening windows provided cross-ventilation. The kitchen was one of the best VRBO's we have ever stayed in with plenty of utensils, good knives, loads of pots and pans, crock pot. Washer & dryer also on site. The cleaning crew leaves current dated condiments in the refrigerator door (ketchup, mustard, etc.) so you may want to check before purchasing groceries. The grocery store in Angel Fire (8 miles away) was more than adequate to provide provisions for a week's stay. The roomy space with two sofas and a cushioned chair, along with a huge dining table and six chairs comfortably accommodated two adult couples. The entire ranch house was extremely clean and nicely furnished. Internet and cell phones were sketchy, but we were aware of that going in. A public library in Angel Fire offered internet services, if needed. We brought along DVD's to watch movies some evenings and other times we gazed at stars and the full moon showing her face during our visit. Wildlife was abundant! I filled up an available hummingbird feeder and we enjoyed the feisty hummingbirds competing for nectar. We saw rabbits, chipmunks, nesting birds in eaves, deer, elk and as mentioned, heard coyotes. Two ponds close by attracted waterfowl and otters. We used the property as a base from which to take several day trips, one day traveling as far as Santa Fe to attend a cooking school. Angel Fire hosts a free public concert Fridays early evening next to the Visitor's Center. The Angel Fire Golf Course was a favorite of my husband's and the Angel Fire chair lift enjoyed by all. Edward May was prompt to respond and easy to work with. You will not be disappointed in this rental, if you are after a relaxing time enjoying nature in a beautiful mountain setting.

Charming Ranch Home

We had an amazing stay at this property, it was QUIET and peaceful with hardly a vehicle in sight, except for those passing by on the quiet state highway. Lovely views of the valley, sunrise and beautiful NM skies. This home has the perfect amenities for a trip away from "the world" to include a fully stocked kitchen, chairs on the deck to view the stars, and comfortable couches and beds. Also, satellite TV and wifi available. If you are looking for a slice of quiet, a get away from the hustle and bustle of life, this rustic, charming cabin is perfect. P.S. The bird watching was top notch!

Amazing Getaway

Loved staying at this property. My second time and will definitely be going back for more. Peaceful, quiet and amazing views of valley, ponds, pasture and evergreen plush hills. Wildlife is amazing. During our stay we saw elk, deer, water fowl, coyote, muskrat in the pond, hawks and to many different birds to mention. BTW, the host is amazing. Responds to messages very quickly, sometimes within a matter of minutes.

Cozy Getaway-

My friend & I were looking for a quiet place to get away from it all & this home fit the bill! Nine miles out of Angel Fire, it is set in the midst of a valley. The WiFi worked great; cell phone coverage was pretty good for being in the middle of nowhere. We could not get the TV to turn on, but that was fine. Kitchen is well stocked with utensils, cook and bakeware along with staples. Beds were comfy. Rooms are spacious. Ample wood was supplied for wood stove but no kindling; fire starters proved helpful! The manager was prompt in getting back to answer my questions.

House was great, cabin feel, very homey, felt liked I lived there forever. The views were amazing, words can't really describe the views, would come back. Owner was easy to communicate with. Stayed the first week in February, 2020. Didn't see any deer, but did see foxes and coyotes. Great place.

Perfect getaway!

Everything was amazing. Warm and inviting. Beds were comfortable. Satellite was available. I would recommend, if traveling in the winter, to travel in a SUV or a truck. It snowed while we were here, and if we drove a car it would have been very difficult to maneuver Angel Fire as a whole.

Peaceful mountain cabin

Quiet, rustic cabin with all the luxuries of a fine resort. Full kitchen, great tv, laundry, etc.........if you choose. OR drop off the grid and take in the quiet and view the sun rises with a cup of coffee on the porch. Enjoy a good book, from the owners library, as you curl up on the sofa by the wood burning stove. Select a view from the cabin or the wooded hill to set up your artist easel!

About the host

Host profile image
Hello, my name is Edward May and I purchased my home in 1991. The house was originally built around 1927. The original ranch that this home was part of was about 67,000 acres. At one time this area was very successful as a potato farming location. I currently live in Hawaii where I design and install tropical landscapes. I do come home to Black Lake a few times a year and anxiously await every visit. I am always happy to return and the beauty of the surrounding mountains surprises me and brings much pleasure still after all these years.
Thank you,
Ed May

Why they chose this property

This property was located in an amazing location. Considering that it was where the large ranch built, we knew there must have been a reason that they built this home where they did. Often, when it is cold and windy, sitting on the deck is still possible because we are so well protected on the west side by a large hill that breaks the wind so it is very calm here when the wind is blowing hard compared to other places just near by. Located next to and on Little Coyote Creek and we also have ponds just in front of the house. We get to enjoy water views as well. Just all around a wonderful location and a fine home built from the massive trees from the ranch. A sawmill was brought to the location to build the home from the old Douglas Fir trees growing on the ranch.

What makes this property unique

Our guests keep telling us that it was a unique experience to stay at our home and thanking me for sharing it with others. It is my pleasure to share this "Jewel" with my guests. It's unique historic quality coupled with an artistic remodel and restoration, makes staying here a truly one-of-a-kind experience. There is simply nothing like it in the valley and there are very few older homes in the area. The timber logs (squared off on three sides) cut from old-growth fir trees has developed a patina over the last 90 years that can not be found anywhere. This is the real deal, an authentic mountain home. All this, coupled with the remodel of the home including the electric, plumbing and heating system, has created a sense of age with modern beauty and style. Our guests, and I myself, can sit for hours gazing out of the windows at the incredible mountain views and viewing the wildlife. Our ponds give a beautiful foreground to the vast mountain vistas. It is just a pleasure to spend time in this special mountain location.
