We had an amazing stay here, the house is beautiful and the views are breathtaking! The owner was so easy to work with and a pleasure to chat with during our communications.Be sure to read the welcome book to the end, it gives a great history of the home and family.Thank you so very much for sharing your home!
First off the host is extremely responsive. Anything I needed he responded fast and took care of it.
The drive in is long. This is stated in the description. Drive slow and you will see pronghorn, mule deer some very nice bucks, bunnies, fox, coyotes, a man bear with two cubs and of course cows. The cattle guesses should give that away. We enjoyed our drive in/out immensely.
It rained while we were there. The road had big holes and became bumpy in spots. If you have a low profile vehicle be prepared.
The house is isolated. You will be along way out in the middle of nowhere. Enjoy it. No noise pollution other than wildlife and the occasional far off lonely howl of the train horn. No Light pollution. Look up there are stars. Fresh air. Breath deeply. That’s what fresh clean air smells like.
The house is beautiful. Loved the window views I have many pictures of the wildlife from the windows. The bucks fighting was amazing. Take your coffee. Go sit on the porch. Watch the sunrise. It’s balm for the soul. Have a night cap watch the sunset over the mountains. Feel the peacefulness surround you. Enjoy it.
The kitchen is stocked with several amenities. The beds were comfortable. The house was clean and welcoming. We all enjoyed our stay.
This is the place to go to just relax. You are quite a drive from all those touristy places. There is one place that is a must. That is the Bozeman hot springs. We spent an afternoon there and felt amazingly revitalized.
This is a great place to stay at. The owner was very responsive to us. Would love to stay for a few days.
Only issue is that getting there is brutal.
Google and Waze had us take a route that involved 8 miles of gravel (that became a dirt trail) that dead-ended. We called the owner, he helped us with new directions. That, too, was 8 miles of gravel and rock roads.
I live on a gravel road, no problem there. But this wasn't a gravel road. If you don't have big tires and a big vehicle, I would think hard about this place. The holes in the road broke the backing plate on one of our tires.
But, again, place was nice and the views from this REMOTE location are amazing!
Met the family at the Shepards Retreat for three nights. My wife, two adult boys, a girlfriend and a dog who all had an amazing experience. The only wildlife we didn’t see was a moose, but everything else was around, doing their thing (including bear). Check in was a breeze, the host communicated and was welcoming and the retreat had everything you needed.
I would strongly recommend the retreat for those that want to take a break, get away from it all, spend quality time with family or just want to relax. Nothing better than sitting on the porches in the morning with your coffee and binoculars looking for your “neighbors”. We will be back. Thanks for the experience.
We travelled from Central NY to Montana for a friend’s wedding. We were wanting a mountain experience and The Shepard Retreat was exactly that. We loved its remote location and ability to “unplug” and enjoy the views. From coffee on the porch at sunrise to evening sunsets on the back deck, just breathtaking views in all directions. The kitchen was well stocked and the house had everything we needed. If we ever come back to Montana in the future, this spot will be at the top of our list!
I don’t even know where so start- if you are considering this property, just book it. You will not be disappointed. We were here for MSU graduation, 60th birthday, and kicking cancer’s butt. The property is magical and soul soothing. Comfy beds and well equipped kitchen. And the views- so much history inside and out. Book now!
Judson worked with us from the very first communication to the very last. He coordinated scheduling the Sheperd’s Nook so our group of hunters had the entire place to ourselves.
There was plenty of room to relax after a day of hunting. Mule deer, Whitetail and Antelope were seen daily on the drive into the property. A couple of coyotes crossed our paths as well.
We hope to return next year!
The number of times we have returned (many) is a testament to true joy of this remote Montana Ranch. All our needs are available at the ranch, but in the rare instance that something special is needed, Judson our Host is very responsive.
We will continue to make the Ranch our second home.
Loved the house and the views. Perfect for our needs. We were out & about for full days but great place to come back to for relaxing w dinner/drinks and enjoying the splendid views and wildlife visitors.
We had the best time staying at The Shepherds Retreat! It is a beautiful home in a beautiful location. Everything we needed was included. The house is decorated beautifully. The beds were super comfortable and it was so peaceful. The caretaker was so kind and helpful! We loved every minute and would recommend staying here. Thank you!

Beautiful place only thing that we did not care for was the long rough driveway,
We made it back for a second amazing stay at this great piece of beautiful Montana. You absolutely cannot beat the views and the night sky without any city lights, it is just stunning! We stayed with our whole family and loved it again! We hope to go back again next year!
We had a wonderful time at the property. A wonderful home with all you could need in a beautiful remote location. It is peaceful, serene and beautiful.
This is a great house in a peaceful and beautiful location. We were thrilled with the experience and the host is extremely responsive! We will go back again soon!
Pictures don’t do it justice. Amazing get away with amazing people. The owners are extremely accommodating and caring. They answer any questions and have a magnificent property. The caretakers Frank and Meg are helpful as can be and they help with anything. They stay to themselves but are there when you have a question. My wife said this was probably the best Christmas she’s had. 100 out of 10 recommend this place. You won’t be disappointed.
Great place to stay to get out of town and enjoy rustic setting and peace and quiet. My family enjoyed themselves greatly while I was hunting and in and out. Host was very quick to respond and even brought a bunch of games for the kids during a storm weekend. Property caretaker does live in apartment below if need arises for anything. Overall a great stay-be prepared for rough road out to property but all part of the experience.
The location is remote with 360 degree views of beautiful Montana hills and mountains. The night sky is unlike anything I have ever seen. The home was clean, well equipped, and was like an interactive western museum with all the modern amenities. The neighbors will visit - mule deer, rabbits, eagles, and antelope.
Everything about my stay was amazing right from start to finish. The house and property are beautiful and the views each day couldn't be beat. The wildlife gave me mornings of peace just watching them while the sun was rising. I didn't want my stay to end!
One stay turned into three separate visits. We enjoyed the ranch so much, we made it a second home. It was perfect for exploring Montana. After wandering to the far corners of the state, we would return to enjoy the ranch and plan the next adventure.
Many adventures are a day trip away. We enjoyed The Rodeo in Big Timber. Livingston offered great shops, dining, and one of the Best farmers market we have seen. Yellowstone Wolf watching tour was a highlight. And the fishing is some of the best in the country.
Currently sitting on the porch, enjoying the sunrise, a dog in my lap, a cup of coffee, watching the Mule deer graze on the Hillside.
The Ranch is Montana at its Best.
I believe a forth visit will happen soon.
The home retains all the charm of the original ranch. A living museum of a simpler times. Great location to recharge, sit on the porch and watch the deer and pronghorns roam.

About the host
Hosted by Judson Gilbert
I was born in Livingston, MT, back in the dark ages. Seems like it as I get older. I've lived in Colorado, Wyoming, New Hampshire, and Vermont. My brother, sister and I own The Shepherd's Retreat, and we got it from our parents. We do our best to honor and respect the hard work they did to build such a great house.
Why they chose this property
This land was chosen for us in 1940 by our grandparents. They ran sheep on these hillsides for almost two decades before switching to cows.
What makes this property unique
Our wide-open space inside the house is just like the open prairie out side. Lots of room! My parents were collectors and the house is like a history and art museum all wrapped into one.
