Beware of 56 Cycad Ave
Beware of renting 56 Cycad Ave near Nubble Light! We booked this rental months in advance, signed a contract and paid the full rental amount before our vacation date. We arrived at the rental and while attempting to enter the property a man opened the door. He told us that he also had a contract for the rental and had arrived earlier in the day. We were told check in was at 4pm and we arrived at 4:05pm. We called Jan at Coastal Getaways and explained the situation. We then had to wait for 2.5 hours to hear back from Jan. We’re a family with 4 kids and rented this home with 3 other people so 9 of us sat for 2.5 hours in the driveway waiting for a solution. Jan offered us a rental that wasn’t comparable to the home we had a contract on. We declined the other rental and reiterated we wanted the house that we had a contract on. It turns out the Coastal Getaways rented this property to us after confirming with the homeowners that the week was available. The homeowners then rented the same week to a family member! Jan asked us to leave the property so the other family could leave. Jan did pay for our cooked lobster dinners that we had stopped in Ogunquit for. We had planned on eating the lobster as soon as we got to the house but after sitting in our cars for so long with no utensils, plates etc the lobsters were cold. We left to go try to find a local place to eat. Approximately 1 hour later, Jan calls us to tell us the other family is accusing us of ripping their license plate from their car! During our 2+ hours of sitting in the driveway we noticed the other car had rear end damage, we didn’t cause it! We told Jan to call the police and file a report, interview the neighbors that invited our children into their home to use the bathroom and ask if they saw us commit the crime of criminal mischief! This house was on a street with a lot of activity. People were constantly walking by. If anyone vandalized a car, there would be several witnesses! The homeowner got on a 3 way call with my husband and Jan. The homeowner was swearing at my husband, said he didn’t trust us at his property and that he wasn’t going to rent to us. When we told him to call the police to investigate the alleged damage to his family members car he became more hostile. We said we wanted our money back and he screamed he wasn’t giving us our money back and to get it from the real estate agency. After hanging up Jan called us back and told us we could rent the property. I believe the homeowner must’ve realized how ridiculous his accusation was. At this point it was 9pm! My husband missed his entire dinner because he was in the parking lot dealing with the 2 separate phone calls. To summarize after getting to the rental and finding it already occupied, we waited 2.5 hours to finally be told the other family would leave and it was ours. Then home owner made a false accusation of a crime and took the rental away to be followed with we could have the rental again. At this point our vacation was ruined. We didn’t trust the homeowner to not make further accusations. We told Jan we wanted our money back and that we were going home. In essence we drove 5+ hours one way for a day trip to Maine because the owner double booked the property. Jan from Coastal Getaway’s was a gentleman but the homeowner was anything but a gentleman! He wasn’t apologetic for his error, he was hostile and didn’t offer compensation for his mistake. We were traveling with 5 kids ages 13-6. This was a nightmare of a trip. Beware of the homeowner of 56 Cycad Ave near Nubble Light in ME!
