Location of house was fabulous. Had an issue with no heat for entire stay but local manager was very helpful. The extra person charge is very confusing and requires clarification
Our family of 5 thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Dorothy's home. The pictures don't do it justice. The home had everything we needed to get the most out of our time on Mt. Desert Island. The location was central to all we wanted to do, yet felt like it was miles away from the rest of the world. Clearly, much thought and expertise went into the design and decor of this home. We highly recommend staying here.
The house and deck are designed so that the main spaces (living room, dining area, kitchen and deck have lovely views of Somes Sound. The kitchen is supplied with all the equipment any cook could desire and is designed so several people can prepare food together. The house can comfortably sleep seven and there is a daybed if you are a party of eight. The grounds are gorgeous, beautifully maintained and subtly lit at night. Hadlock Brook runs by the house, adding wonderful sound to the experience. There is a clerestory which cleverly brings light into the interior bathrooms. There is a Frank Lloyd Wright vibe to the house which is very cool. It would be helpful to note that although the house is on the Sound, there is not easy access to the water from the house. Renters should not assume they can swim or kayak from the property itself. But the bouse and grounds are terrific, gorgeous and very quiet. It was a pleasure to stay here.
Beautifully designed contemporary home on an incredible piece of property. Views of the ocean and a lovely creek running down the side of the house. This house is private and quiet, but conveniently located to restaurants, shopping, and Acadia National Park. Equipped with everything you need for cooking, lounging, and a comfortable stay.
Stream side property with view of Somers Sound tidal fluctuations. Open communal living area with nice spaces inside and out. A pleasant walk or quick cycle to town.
Fabulous location. Stunning interior and decor. Beautiful and serene gardens. The brook next to the house adds to the beauty. Great views of Somes sound. Easy access to Acadia and Jordan Pond. Quiet and peaceful location. Would recommend this property to friends and family.
This is by far one of the best places we've ever stayed. A gorgeous house, perfectly nestled in the lovely landscape of Mt. Desert Island. The house has a fully-equipped kitchen, where we made delicious meals with local fare. There are beautiful places inside and out to sit and appreciate the natural environment. Deecy is a wonderful host, responding immediately to questions. We were sad to leave and hope to return soon.
We had a lovely time in NE Harbor. The town was pretty well shut down, but that worked fine. The property is beautiful, very different from the traditional Maine cottage, and fun in that way. Our young children enjoyed exploring the stream and mossy woods and Japanese garden ringing the property. Note that you cannot access the low tide beach from the house itself, but the area has plenty of other water access points. The park was close and blissfully uncrowded for our November visit. The home felt like a boutique hotel and not like a turn & burn rental, as some can. We'd happily go again.
Great home, perfect location. Brook along the house, outside fireplace ! We had a great family vacation and plan on going again next year. MDI in the fall is the best !
Of the many vacation rentals I have enjoyed, this was a standout for architecture.
The extensive clerestory windows added light to all the interior spaces like halls and bathrooms. In some cases, they were aided by mirrors to give the illusion of seeing trees and sky above the usual bathroom mirror.
As shown in the photos, the wall of glass in the rear gives an amazing perspective on the stream flowing into the fjord (Somes Sound). The built-in furniture of the sunken living room is precisely fitted to the surrounding kitchen and dining floor. A shelf on the dining wall is curved to guide the eye to the view in the rear. The stone fireplace is a masterpiece.
Not everything is storybook perfect. The bathrooms are small. We used one for each of us. The use of single-pane glass in the rear wall made it challenging to get the rear warm in cool evenings and mornings without overheating the bedrooms. Opening a bedroom window helps.
The kitchen is not a wonderland of granite and high-end cabinetry, but roomy and more than adequate for preparing many meals. The supplies of paper, foils, wraps and cleaners was far more generous than at most vacation rentals.
The location is nearly perfect for accessing all that Acadia has to offer. Northeast Harbor is a quiet village with a couple of decent restaurants (better than at our home). With the pandemic, we limited ourselves to take-out. The house location is even quieter than the village, although I was told the stream can be noisy in a period of more normal rain.
The owner and caretaker were very helpful.
This home is truly amazing. It will go down as one of our all time homes away from home. The design of the home and the views of the bay from the home are unbelievable. The furnishings and the extensive artwork make staying in this home so pleasurable. Of all the homes we have stayed in, this home is by far the best equipped. The kitchen has every gadget you would ever need for any cooking project. Dorothy, the owner and Carl, the caretaker were so very responsive to all our needs. They were so helpful with suggestions for restaurants and activities. The location of the home is perfect for any outdoor activities we had planned on desert island. What a joy it was to come back to this wonderful home after a day of site seeing in the area. Sitting around the cozy wood burning fireplace in the evening was really special. Without question this was one of our most memorable homes we have ever stayed in.
This is a lovely home in an even lovelier location. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, even though the house had some problems. One bathroom stool didn't work (though there are four other bathrooms available), one bedroom light flickered, and the fireplace could use a little upkeep. So the home wasn't perfect; some repairs are needed. But the glitches didn't dampen our vacation. We had a memorable stay.

Secluded, relaxing, wonderful!
The house and the property are as spectacular as they look in the photos, and then some. From the charming little Japanese-style rock garden by the front door, to the dual indoor/outdoor fireplaces (well-stocked with wood), to the fabulous views out expansive glass walls through the trees towards the sound from the open living room, dining room, and kitchen, to the spacious two-level deck next to babbling brook and waterfall, this house is a true gem.
It's ideally situated for exploring the natural beauty of Mount Desert Island, and provides easy access to Acadia National Park. There are a number of excellent restaurants within an easy drive, and Bar Harbor is only about 20 minutes away. Dorothy was very responsive, and couldn't have been more helpful in pointing us to local attractions.
Highly recommended!

The Best Ever!
This house is fabulous. It is so much better than the photos. The decor is lovely and it is very comfortable; beds are so nice. The kitchen is well-stocked; the gas grill worked perfectly and we used it several times. There is a brook running beside the house and if you open a window, you can hear the delightful sound of water. Each morning we ate breakfast at Colonel's Restaurant, a solid breakfast and lunch place. On Sunday we worshipped at St. Mary's Chapel (the larger Episcopal churches on the island were still closed for the season) and I must say, The Rev. Jane Cornman moved me to tears with her sermon.
We built a fire in the fireplace every night, plenty of firewood. Oh man, do I miss this place!

Beautiful, private, open floor plan
This was a great place to stay. The open floor plan connects a large living area, kitchen, dining area to a beautiful outdoor deck, with views to the water. The outdoor deck has a fireplace and a creek running beside. Great place to wake up and have a cup of coffee, or relax after a day of hiking. Kitchen is very well equipped. It's just a great house to hang out and enjoy Acadia. Highly recommended.

Beautiful and comfortable home
I would recommend this house. We had a great stay. The house is very clean and the area is very quiet which was very nice for 4 busy professionals. Every bedroom has its bathroom. The view is beautiful and the location is perfect to visit Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. One surprise at the end: cleaning fees are deducted from the security deposit which we have never seen before ( the house was left impeccable). In spite of this, I would highly recommend renting this house as it has everything needed for a relaxing and easy vacation.

About the host
Your host
My husband and I enjoy vacationing in Maine. We cherish the opportunity to be on the water, hiking and playing golf, tennis, bridge and attending the wonderful lectures and concerts.
Why they chose this property
My husband and I enjoy the peacefulness and the beauty of our surroundings. This is our get away time thus the cottage is 'Quiet Times.' Since my husband still works we cannot spend the whole summer here so we decided to rent part-time for others to enjoy too.
What makes this property unique
You can enjoy a fire in the fireplace on the deck while listening to the brook and watching the tide come in and out. You can eat fresh lobster caught that morning and even fish a bit.
This is a one-of-a-kind property located on the gold coast of Maine, right on the water and minutes from town. Get the fun and peace of the ocean and the convenience and amenities of town in one package.
