About this property

The Cornerstone Cabin - Mount Rainier

This rustic cabin surrounded by trees is located just one-half mile from Mount Rainier National Park, the Nisqually entrance in Ashford, Washington. Accessible year round with a hot tub under the trees, beautiful cedar slab railed deck with deck chairs for relaxing, picnic table, BBQ, custom cedar slab dart board, marshmallow roasting pit, horseshoe pits, and extra lawn chairs for enjoying the visiting deer and peaceful outdoors. This property backs up to 500+ acres of timbered National Forest that stretch up to a beautiful ridgeline that runs to Mt Wow.

Beautifully remodeled in 2006, this 1923 cabin still retains some of its rustic charm with age warbled glass pane windows, old stone fireplace with custom cedar slab mantle, and refinished hardwood floors. The gorgeous tiled bath includes a jetted tub and shower. This rustic cabin is heated with a wood stove insert with a gorgeous old stone fireplace and cedar slab mantle, plus in September 2021 we added a split pump so now have the choice of electric heat & air conditioning as well.

Comfortable sleeping for up to 8 persons in three bedrooms and the living room. Main floor master bedroom has a super comfortable queen, the living room has a sofa that folds down into a small bed. Upstairs the bear cub room has a super comfortable queen and a single bed with a memory foam topper for extra comfort. There is an additional separate loft with a full-size memory foam futon mattress. All linens are provided and are luxurious 500+ thread count sheets, with cozy blankets & comforters or quilts on every bed. There are a total of 2 queens, 1 full futon, 1 smaller sofa futon, and 1 single beds. Linens are replaced often so may not match photos.

The main living area is a shared living room, dining area, and kitchen area. The dining table has an extra leaf in the closet next to the bathroom, unless the last group added it to the table already. There are 8 chairs around the table. The living portion has a sofa that makes down into a smaller full-size bed. There is also a couple of chairs. The kitchen area has a full-size fridge & range, microwave, toaster, coffee pot, coffee grinder, waffle iron, crock pot, instapot, can opener & blender. There are also kitchen utensils, pots/pans, bake ware, plates, cups, glasses, bowls, silverware, etc.

If traveling in winter, Mt Rainier National Park requires all vehicles carry chains into the park. This mountain cabin sits at 2000' elevation in the Cascade Mountain range, so may or may not have snow accumulation at any time between November and April depending on storm systems. The highway is plowed often so access to the cabin driveway is kept clear. The driveway has an incline, so during heavy snow systems some years, guests may prefer to park at the bottom of the driveway if not in a 4-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicle.

In the mountains, power outages are common, and can occur for a few minutes to a few hours at any time of year. We try to keep this cabin stocked with flashlights and candles. Additionally, we have added battery-operated lightbulbs in the Owl's roost lamp, Bear cub room lamp, and the light fixture above the bench in the mud room. They only work in single light bulb fixtures and have about an 8-hour charge if the power goes out.

Due to a severe allergy, dogs are not allowed in our cabin.

It was really neat to stay in a cabin that was 100 years old. We felt the old world charm with the old wooden windows and the slanted floors. My only recommendation is that they do something about the water pressure in the shower. That was incredibly disappointing. It was just a trickle of water.

A nice getaway

Pros: great directions. Found the cabin in the dark without getting lost. Great communication. Clean ( I did mistaken a small leak from the bathroom skylight as unclean…the cabin was super clean)The kitchen was fully supplied with with everything I needed to cook and bake with ;pots pan, plates, kitchen utensils)Really close to mount Rainer The games and movies are great! They also have a journal that you can’t write a little something about yourself inside it. That was fun to read. I really enjoyed the place. I would stay again. I think I would enjoy it much more in the summer. Cons-the cabinets are super high. Like ceiling high. They do provide a stool. The steps up to the bedrooms. Very steep. But they have a sturdy railing to hold onto

Excellent

Such a cute cabin. Excellent location to the park and town. It had everything we needed and was clean and comfortable. There was limited cell reception which I actually enjoyed and it was fun looking through the collection of dvd’s at night finding a movie after long days of hiking. I also enjoyed just sitting outside and the hot tub. I didn’t need to communicate with the owner for anything, but the check in process was super easy and there were instructions and options for things posted which were super helpful and appreciated. Most definitely will be staying here again soon.

Great stay and close to Mt. Rainer National Park

Thanks so much for the great stay! We had a great time being disconnected for our stay. The property was well maintained and had the basics to make a simple meal. We enjoyed being close to the park as we were able to relax and rest after a long days hike! Thank you!

Rainier Basecamp

This was a beautiful, easily accessible cabin right outside the main entry gate for the national park. The kids enjoyed the movies, we all enjoyed the hot tub, and the property manager was easy to communicate with. The only thing I would warn people about is that if you are a light sleeper you may have trouble as in the primary bedroom you will hear every vehicle that goes by as you are above the main road. It didnt bother us too much and we slept great after all the hiking, and the bed was overall very comfortable. Well stocked kitchen and everything we needed for a family of 5 to cook meals. Had limited cell service with Verizon on the main deck- which was lovely to sit on and read.

The Perfect Location!!!

Our family of 6 absolutely loved our stay! We couldn't have asked for a better location as we were just a couple minutes from the Mt. Rainer entrance which made it very convenient to enter the park each day. We would definitely return for a future adventure!

Mt. Rainier Getaway

The Cornerstone Cabin was the perfect home base for us to visit Mt. Rainier. The location couldn’t be better. The beds were comfy, the kitchen was well-stocked, and the hot tub was a great bonus. We enjoyed the fact that there was no wi-fi and we were able to truly get away from it all.

Perfect location and size

We rent this every year because it is the perfect location just outside the park, has plenty of room for our family, and the owners are very communicative. They updated the kitchen and living room, making it even better!

Nice place for our group of 3 to stay the weekend

My friends and I were doing a very strenuous hike near Mt. Rainier and wanted to stay the nights before/after nearby to avoid needing to make the long drive to/from Seattle. This cabin suited our needs perfectly. It was as close to Rainier National Park as possible. Although the place is small (we wouldn't have wanted to share it with a fourth unrelated adult) it is packed with amenities. We enjoyed cooking dinner in the well equipped kitchen, relaxing in the hot tub. and getting wonderful sleep in the beds. We will keep this in mind for future visits.

Great home base for exploring Mount Rainier

We really enjoyed the Cornerstone Cabin! A great combination of modern convenience and rustic charm and setting - perfect for our family (we have two teens). Note it's about 35-40 minutes from the main Paradise visitor center and the most popular hiking trails. But that's as close as *any* lodging can be (other than the two hotels inside the park). Pretty much nothing is closer, since it's immediately outside the park entrance. Hot tub in the backyard was great - felt new and clean. Large new laundry machines. Kitchen was very well stocked - though a) no dishwasher, and b) cabinets are ridiculously high, so if you're not tall, and not comfortable standing on a step stool (provided), that could be a problem. Loved that unlike most places, they left condiments, bottled water, and some other essentials in the fridge and kitchen. There's a decent small grocery store about 5 minutes drive before the cabin - had everything we needed. We were there on the hottest days of the summer (92+), and the main floor A/C kept up just fine. Even the lofts were OK if we left the windows open, and used the box fan (provided) - because the whole place is shaded by tall trees. Beds in the lofts were very comfortable BTW. The only caveats are 1) If you have *young* kids, the loft areas could be a bit dangerous - without railings around the cutouts for the stairs. 2) The futon in the living room wasn't the most comfortable to sleep on. But overall, great stay, and would definitely recommend!

The MOST adorable cabin!

We loved our stay! Right outside the Mt Ranier park gate, and convenient to Ashford, its a lovely cabin up on the hill. Even our teens enjoyed the wide movie selection (despite lack of internet) ;) Would definitely stay again.

Great location, very charming

This cabin was a perfect launching ground for our stay at Mount Rainier National Park. It was only about 5 minutes from the park entrance. We loved the fire pit and the dart board outside. We also loved the big movie selection. We had everything we needed there. The cabin has great rustic charm. Please be advised, there is no wifi and not much cell service here, which we didn't mind.

Great location for Mt. Ranier

We loved being so close to the entrance to Ranier! The cabin was rustic and served our purposes. Cooking was a bit of a challenge as the kitchen is very small. Much of the cooking and eating equipment is stored up high, which was not a problem for us, but could be for people who aren't comfortable using a step ladder. Along with the great location came alot of road traffic to the park- for the afternoon, there was a slow steady stream of cars past the cabin until about 4:30- not sure if it is always like this or it was so busy due to a holiday weekend. We thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub!!

Cozy and close to the National Park

It was a wonderful stay in the woods. Everything you need is there. Using the hot tub in between the trees is unbelievable… And there were outdoor games, toys, DVDs and much more for kids. The communication with the owner was very friendly and courteous. The only thing that can be missed is WiFi. Thank you for the unforgettable days at Mount Rainier

My husband grew up in this area and has lived here all his life. We live nearby so this is our playground for hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing, fishing, boating, and anything outdoors. We love this area, and sharing it with others!

Why they chose this property

I love to go on long hikes or snowshoe trips at Mt Rainier and this cabin is halfway between those trips and my house. As well, the backyard to this cabin has over 500 acres of national forest, with easy access for long hikes through beautiful trees. This is the perfect stopover after a long day to soak in the hot tub, curl up with a book on the deck, cuddle on the futon to watch a movie, or just watch nature saunter through your yard.

What makes this property unique

We enjoy the solitude, getting away from the rat-race, getting back to nature, finding peace in watching deer, squirrels and other wildlife while relaxing on the deck or in the hot tub. The cabin does not have cell phone coverage, phone, internet, cable or satellite. You can 'drop out' and totally relax. However, if you must have any of these they are all convienently located within 5 miles of the cabin in Ashford.
