The Cévennes and the Ardèche are ancient and very historical cultural landscapes, but so far barely discovered by German tourism. Mostly only the canoeists know the rivers Ardèche, Beaume or Chassezac. But the Ardèche department has much more to offer than just whitewater. In addition to the famous limestone gorges of the rivers, hikers will be amazed by the lonely mountains. On old mule tracks you walk through a centuries-old terraced, now mostly wild cultural landscape, characterized by chestnut forests, barren ridges, many small rivers and streams and fortress-like built from quarry villages. The Massif du Tanargue is the highest mountain range in the Ardèche. The hikes in this area are particularly attractive due to the contrast of rugged mountains up to 1 500 m high and the mild Mediterranean climate with over 300 days of sunshine a year. On the way there are always beautiful swimming spots in the clear rivers and streams. In the autumn, with a little luck, you can find tons of mushrooms, such as porcini mushrooms or chestnut.
