About this property

Competitive Prices, Beautiful Views, River, Fun Activities, Not Far from Dc

This quaint, country home and cabin is located at the foot of a mountain overlooking the famous Shenandoah River known for its fishing and beauty. It is a rustic place with the basic for comforts, it is not a 5 star hotel all perfect and super modern but more of a rustic, old grandma's home style with some modern features (like a large flat screen TV with surround system, WiFi and a brand new Hot Tub. So please be aware of that fact so you don't get disappointed when you arrive and see that is not like a luxurious resort.
Guests have access to a private entrance to the Shenandoah River, which is just across the home. The area was recently designated a national landmark by the U.S. Department of Interior because of its beauty and historical importance. In particular, a favorite activity is to take the Skyline Drive, which is operated by the National Park Service. Alternatively, visit the Luray Caverns, which is just a 15 minute drive from the home. Shopping and restaurants are just 15 minutes from the home.

CABIN AND MAIN FEATURES

The home has a large deck from which you witness the spectacular view by day of the Shenandoah River and Shenandoah Valley, which is surrounded by mountains full of forests. On the same deck by night you witness the starry night seeing the sky full of stars and planets! Also you can appreciate of all of these marvelous views while being in a nice new hot tub. The home is locally known as “1 Little Vineyard by the River”, since it has a small and developing vineyard and as a result you will see this theme reflected inside the home through its decor. The kitchen, comes with most of what you need to cook or simply to serve prepared food you bring from area eateries. The living room has a convenient electric fireplace, nice flat screen TV and surround sound system where you and your kids can comfortably enjoy different shows or movies (even from the kitchen while cooking) or simply play some nice music while you cook or enjoy conversations with your family and friends.

ACTIVITIES AND CONVENIENCES

Guests come to either rest or to enjoy the many activities the area offers, which include fishing, hunting, biking, hiking, mountain climbing, swimming or kayaking or canoeing. Those into the civil war will find many important historical sites or battle locations very close by. Guests have access to a private entrance to the Shenandoah River, which is just across from the home. The home is easily accessible from Washington DC or from Northern Virginia. Flights from anywhere in the country are usually reasonable so travel cost should not deter you. Those coming from outside the area will find it easy to travel to the area, since you have three major airports serving the area: Dulles International Airport, Washington Reagan Airport or Baltimore International Airport.

Come and enjoy the peaceful environment here at the home and at the same time have easy access to such notable places as the Smithsonian Museums, Capital, and the White House. Alternatively, you can simply drive down the famous and breathtaking Skyline Drive operated by the U.S. National Park Service, which is minutes from the home. The towns of Front Royal and Luray are also an easy 15 minute drive (approx) from the home and there you will have access to shopping, restaurants and to the renowned Luray Caverns.

LAYOUT OF CABIN

The cabin sleeps up to 12 persons. It has different areas so family don't feel too tight with each other. It is large enough but it has been divided and planned in a certain way that if you are just a couple and are looking to spend some cozy time with your partner or a small family, don't worry, you would get that cozy feeling from the design of the cabin as well.

For those wanting to know how private the bedrooms are, here is a description of cabin’s layout.

Keep in mind that the cabin is an A-frame cabin with a loft. The cabin has four bedrooms*; two bedrooms have total privacy with doors (one is located in the A Frame Portion of the house on the first level and the other one is located at the basement), one bedroom is a loft and offers some privacy and another smaller bedroom with no doors and therefore with little privacy is located before accessing to the A Frame Portion of the House next to the living room. That is the main bedroom provided for reservations made for one couple only. Here is a further description.

On the main floor are:
the kitchen, dining area, screened porch, 2 full bathrooms, a living room, a family room, and 2 "master" bedrooms. The main one located in the A Frame Portion of the cabin has a door, making this bedroom one of the most private ones. It has a queen size bed. You will find the master bathroom right in front of this master bedroom at the end of the hallway.

Next to the living room is the other "main" bedroom with a queen size, very comfortable bed and it has been redesigned for hosting couples. It connects to the A-frame portion of the home but has been somehow separated in case only one couple reserves the home and want a more intimate and cozy experience but can be open up in case larger families reserve the cabin.

The A Frame portion of the home has the loft, the private "master" bedroom and bathroom and a family room
The bedroom in the loft does not have doors, but yet the area is relatively private, since you have to be on the top floor to have clear view of the main bedroom. The loft has a full-size bed and a queen size futon.
The A Frame section of the cabin has a family room with beautiful large views to the river and the hills and access to the deck at the front of the house. There is the second futon where 2 people can sleep and some club chairs or arm chairs to relax.

The basement is finished and it has a private bedroom with a queen size bed and it has a door that closes for privacy and there's a living area right outside with a couch that converts into a full-size bed. The basement is not closed in, but rather is at the level of the driveway. It has its own private entry and sliding glass doors. So it’s not claustrophobic. The basement will be included in the price for groups of 11 or 12. For groups of 10 or less the basement will remain locked since 10 or less could fit in the beds provided. If you wish to have access to the basement in order to use the extra private bedroom and area, please indicate it in your inquiry and we will let you know the cost of it for your reservation.

The main floor to the cabin has the main amenities needed including kitchen, living room, bathrooms and access to the main deck where the Hot tub is. There is no need to have access to the basement unless you have a very large party. Please know that most of the time, the cabin would be divided depending on the size of the party or if it is just a couple. If it is just one couple they would use only the new redesigned bedroom and the rest of the main floor except the A Frame portion of the cabin.
For groups of nine (9) adults and (2) two children They will have access to the A Frame Portion of the cabin but no access to the basement, since the main floor with the loft of the A-Frame accommodates these many guests.
Parties that are larger than 10 will have access to the basement, which will sleep up to four adults (has a single full-size bed in a private bedroom and has a full-size sleeper couch). Access to locked areas at the cabin would be available at an extra cost.

The kitchen is a large kitchen with all the basics provided for doing basic cooking (micro, dishwasher, fridge, dishes, pots and silverware).

The main living room is next to the kitchen and there is where you will find one full bathroom. The living room has a fireplace, flat screen TV (50') with cable and surround sound system.

Disappointing

The cabin is in a quiet location with views of the Shenandoah River and mountain peaks. Luray is an easy drive. The property is showing its age though and smelled really dank and musty until we ran the a/c awhile. Furniture is not very comfortable. One bathroom had no hot water and lots of creepy-crawlies appeared in the bathroom from nowhere during the night. The bed in the one private bedroom is hard as a rock.

Not a favorite

We visited with our party of 10--6 adults and 4 kids aged 5 and under--in early August. As described by owner, the house is older and "rustic." They let us check in early which was nice. Location is great and we really enjoyed access to the hot tub, outdoor grill, the river, and also visiting Lake Arrowhead. I did think from the pictures that there was more of a lawn for kids to play on, and that's not really the case, just FYI. Sleeping arrangements took some thought for three couples + kids. Only two bedrooms have doors and I'm not sure that the queen beds are actually queen - looked/felt more like doubles. Luckily we had three kids happy to sleep on the floor. The air circulation was not ideal. Two ACs in the house did an OK job cooling the kitchen/living room/loft area, but the back bedroom on the main floor never cooled down, and the basement (with one bedroom and sitting area) had no cool air circulation at all (and it was very musty). Tough in August. Water pressure in the showers was awful. I also suggest you take pictures of every room, bed, blanket, countertop, and appliance upon arrival. We were ultimately charged for a stained comforter that I am 100% sure was not our fault -- because no one used comforters due to the heat!

Stay only if on tight budget

Pros: cheap, good heating, stocked kitchen utensils, nice and responsive owner to questions. Cons: Uncomfortable beds in every room (every family member of mine was unable to sleep comfortably), dangerous living conditions (2 inch lip we all tripped on several times walking from living room to bedroom; AND a lower level staircase whose steps were so narrow that you had to walk sideways to get downstairs-my husband fell down the steps and bruised his hips), tons of notes around the house telling you what was not included (no access to their laundry room, no propane for the gas grill, "maintenance room-keep out", must take out garbage to a dumpster 4 miles away if you check out on certain days etc.). Made you feel very unwelcome and uncomfortable, especially when you see that for decorations, one of the room had ripped calendar pictures scotch taped to the walls. In addition, there is NO CELL SERVICE if you have Verizon or TMobile. Sprint was the only cell service. The wifi was also very unreliable. You would get connected for 5 min and then dropped. We had to reset the router multiple times. We did tell the owner but due to our short stay, he wasn't able to do anything about it. He did give us a slight refund for the wifi problems. If you're looking for a cheap place to stay with absolutely no frills, this is the place to stay. My family and I have rented many VRBO homes in various locations for many years and this is the worst place we've ever come across. I'm shocked at the great reviews of this rental by others. It may be that these people have never stayed at other VRBO homes before. If you're on a super tight budget with a large family, this would be the place to stay. For me and my family, we would never come back. We gave it 2 stars only because of how responsive the owners were to our questions. If we had to stay longer than 3 nights, we would have moved elsewhere.

The "Little Vineyard" doesn't come with wine glasses

These owners do the absolute bare minimum to keep making $ on this place. The "driveway" is the poorest maintained of any on the street. I hesitate to call it gravel because there wasn't much gravel left, it was pretty much just a muddy mess - good luck going uphill on it in the rain, much less snow. There's no exterior lighting downstairs, where you need it most when you're getting out of the car. Near the Jacuzzi, the deck was a slippery lawsuit waiting to happen - covered in algae. Thought it was odd that they kept the jazuzzi running the whole time (expensive and we could've figured out how to turn it on/would have known to turn it on ahead of time), but the fire place pilot light/gas was not on (even though it was supposed to be) and could not be turned on. Not very cozy for a winter getaway. We were not told ahead of time that no sponge, dish soap, or dishwasher soap would be provided, yet of course we're responsible for cleaning & putting away all the dishes before leaving. Despite an exorbitant "cleaning fee," which they don't mention until you contact them, we were responsible for taking out our own trash, dishes, and my allergies bothered me the whole time (which only happens when I'm in a dusty place...). The cabin is covered in wine & vineyard-related decor - grapes, vines, wine bottle pictures etc - yet the "fully stocked kitchen" included NO WINE GLASSES! Seriously? There were these plastic things that ruined the taste of wine, but no actual wine glasses. There were signs everywhere with elaborate instructions about how to avoid turning the AC/heaters off, what not to do, no smoking signs, etc. We felt like everywhere we turned we might screw something up. Although we kept asking about the grill to try to be prepared before getting there, they responded without ever answering our questions. One of the main kitchen lights was out/sketchy looking, and the place has not been updated in who knows how long, which is not a huge deal but added to the overall apathetic atmosphere. This place might be good for a huge family/frat party (lots of beds, DVDs...all the signage). However, we will not be going back and would not recommend it for couples' getaways or for people with indoor allergies. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because it has a nice view, jacuzzi, and at least wasn't so terrible as to make it impossible for us to have a good time in the area.

Exactly as described & perfect for our holiday vacation

Fernando and Sissy had the perfect home for our family get together for the holidays. Their description of the house was accurate and their communication was quick. We had a question about the internet, and even though it was the holidays, they were prompt and got us the assistance needed within minutes. The home was spacious for the nine (8 adults and 1 toddler) of us, and we all had room that we weren't on each other's backs. The location to the river, Luray and the national park was great. Seeing the sunrise each morning was breathtaking from within the house, and the hot tub was an added bonus when it was chilly.. :) Definitely will plan to stay again!

In desperate need of TLC

After booking, Fernando and Sissy asked us to vacate the property from 8A-noon the Saturday (day after arrival) we were there, as they had roof repairs scheduled. I thought it was odd and considered asking for a discount, but I booked last minute and was truthfully glad I found something. Well, there's a reason this was the only place in the area (with a hot tub) left. The neighborhood and views are beautiful but this property was extremely unclean (literally hair from a previous visitor in the shower, dirty cups in the cupboard, dead bugs on the walls and ceilings) to the point of discomfort. I even slept on the front room couch because I was unsure about the beds. They say it's rustic, but that's a pretty polite euphemism covering up the fact it isn't cleaned regularly. The hot tub doesn't have stairs or a ladder so you have to climb up into it. Older visitors would definitely have problems enjoying this amenity. When I relayed the dirty state of the property upon arrival, Fernando and Sissy apologized but did not offer to send out cleaning services or discount anything. Later, they offered a discount on a future stay, but I asked to apply it to this visit. They offered less than the cost of our 3rd party member, and I've yet to see that refund.

Wonderful weekend getaway.

We had a wonderful time staying at Fernando and Sissy’s cabin. It’s a very cute and cozy place tucked away near the mountains. Hot tub was fantastic and a great view from it, at first it didn’t seem like it would be all that private but because the house is up on the hill it was perfect. Enjoyed the whole stay in general and it’s a great price. Definitely a great option for larger groups as well.

Tremendous Sunrise!!

We have been visiting the Shenandoah area annually for the past 17 years. I’m an avid backpacker but can’t get the ladies to stay in a tent so we look for cabins to make them comfortable. We’ve stayed in many different properties over the years (and this is no slight to the other fine properties) but this has been our most enjoyable stay, in respect to proximity, comfortably, cleanliness, overall integrity of the property and (if your an early riser like me) the most tremendous sunrise from the front porch. After a gorgeous day on Skyline drive we had only a 16min drive from Walmart. The cabin is nestled on a nice elevation which give breathtaking views of the Shenandoah towards the east, Washington Nat Forest towards the west, and Shenandoah North Fork River towards the North. We found Fernando and Sissy give the place a hotel feel with the cleanliness and preparation before our arrival. Heaters were very easy to use, all switches are labeled, WiFi was strong and hot tub was super clean. We already miss the place and cannot wait to return. Thanks again Fernando and Sissy for a great stay!! Anthony

Not an accurate description--very disappointing experience

Let me start by saying that I'm not one to relish in negative posts; it really takes a lot for me to feel the need to write a post like this, but I think it would be unfair if this property continued to receive the high rating it has (which I cannot, for the life of me, understand). We booked this cabin for my birthday weekend, and we frequent the Shenandoah Valley often. We were so excited because the photos and the descriptions made it sound like a rustic oasis with plentiful amenities only "minutes" away from Skyline Drive. To begin, there are only two proper bedrooms in the entire property (not four). The other "rooms" consist of an open loft and an awkward space that cuts between one sitting room and another. In my group, there were a number of couples and a lot of disappointment. The cost of the property (which is NOT cheap!) is not worth what you get. Furthermore, the welcome letter is an overwhelming pages-long warning of what not to do. Everything had a price tag listed (i.e. you'll be charged if the hot tub isn't clean (???), or if you use the firewood (WHAT?!) or the trash isn't all taken out to very specific dumpster sites with very limited weekend hours). On top of that, the property wasn't stocked with enough toilet paper... when we contacted the owner about our disappointment regarding the inaccurate description of "rooms" and the lack of toilet paper, we were met with an apathetic apology and insistence that the descriptions were accurate. To top off the weekend, my husband ended up filling his car with almost a dozen bags of trash only to learn that the dumpster sites don't open until noon. He ended up lugging all the smelly trash back to Arlington to dump in our apartment dumpster. The only thing this place has going for itself is its location and views, but even that was not described accurately. To be clear, this cabin is NOT in or near the Shenandoah... it is almost an hour away from Skyline Drive. Don't be fooled by the descriptions of this property. Needless to say, we will not be back.

Fun Weekend Getaway!

The location of house was perfect for our tubing trip we planned close by. House was spacious and if privacy is what you are looking for when you have a large group, then read the description carefully. Even though we had a large group (10) we had no issues with water pressure or not having enough space to move around. We got to enjoy the hot tub and the view from deck was beautiful and relaxing! The stated rate for house showing on the calendar is not the price and the description tells you that upfront. If you send a message before you book to get the actual rate, then you can decide if it's for you. The rate we got was not much different than what showed on screen so we were fine with a slight price difference. The owners were very responsive to messages sent and answered all questions we had. Overall, we had a great time and if we plan another weekend down in that area this house will probably be the one we book. Thank you!!

Not what we expected

The place was not very dirty. There was dust and spider webs everywhere. Bedroom was very small. Sheets were itchy. The main house, even the upper floor was not accessible. The listing just said that basement will not be available, it did not say anything about the upper floors being locked too. Bathroom was tiny. Grill was filled with more spiderwebs . All the patio furniture looked like it had not been cleaned for weeks. The only upside was the hot tub and the view. Overall disappionting and not worth the price.

Clearly run by absentee landlords, who were responsive but unable to address all issues immediately

This property offers a state cabin experience at much higher prices. We arrived to find the AC not working, and had only two very loud window units our first night. The next afternoon was spent entertaining the AC technician. The cabin itself is very basic and has only one room (not included in the base price) with any privacy. The main bedroom is essentially a hallway to the other wing, one room is actually an open loft, and there is one private bathroom. The owners were very responsive and did try to work with us to ameliorate our very negative impressions, which helped somewhat. However, we would not advise families with small children to go to the property because of various safety concerns. Very close to rafting, which was fun, and reasonably close to shopping (20 minute drive) and basic dining. The views from the cabin were pretty, and the new hot tub was a plus. Great view of stars in the evenings!

Lauray Stay

House was not what was expected. Said there were 6 bedrooms. I paid for 7 adults and needed 4 bedrooms. There was only 2 available bedrooms with a door and one in a hallway area...no door. There was a 4th bedroom that was $$extra that we were not told in advance. My family was not happy about the sleeping situation. There was not 6 bedrooms. There are sofa beds. However the house was ok...a bit ristic and our family survived. P6ur family is close and we always have fun.

Cabintastic Girls' Weekend

Very glad we read the previous reviews! Be sure to do that!! My stay was great and it is helpful that I knew what to expect. I have lived in the country before, but my girlfriends...not so much. So I explained to them about the lower water pressure because of the well source (even though we booked enough rooms to have access to two showers, we made sure not to use them at the same time or they would have been at a trickle - no lack of hot water, though!) and I was pretty prepared not to have cell service (wifi password was on the fridge. had to restart the router a few times and the internet was spotty at best so I'm glad i saved the doc the owners sent me with the code to get in the front door of the cabin). Turning on the heat was an adventure, but once we figured out the gas/electric wall-mounted units, it was toasty warm in no time. It is rustic, but the beds are comfy and the kitchen is a great size (we made dinner one night and breakfast in the morning). The hot tub was amazing!! The view in the morning from the front porch was stunning!! We walked down to the river and took in the sights and sounds of the quiet neighborhood. We made smores in the fire pit one night and played some of the board games that were in the cabin, too. This is an unbeatable location for horseback riding at Jordan Hollow Stables and visiting the Luray Caverns as well. You're about 12 mins from town...and 4G service :) but my friends and I were happy to "disconnect." I noticed the floor in the front room sustained some kind of damage and had bowed when I first came in, but didn't have great service, so alerted the owners when I could and they were very responsive and accommodating - I also asked for a late checkout and they were very kind and flexible in allowing us to stay late (so we could squeeze in one more activity in the area). I would definitely recommend this cabin to friends in the future looking for a weekend getaway, but would be sure to let them know they are in an authentic cabin and not a hotel and I'm sure they would be just as happy as we were.

Gorgeous and Spacious. 5 Star

The house was very Spacious with 2 portions of the house for 6 people. Filled with furniture's and all necessary amenities. Just the floor near the TV and restroom door near TV has to be taken care a bit, apart from that it's a wonderful place for a get away. Thanks for hosting us.

Great cabin for a relaxing weekend

We would definitely recommend this cabin for a relaxing family getaway. It is not a luxurious place, but has everything you need for a good price. The hot tub worked well for us, as did the kitchen, and it is close to Luray and the national park. Our only warning to others who would be staying during cold weather is that the back bedroom gets pretty chilly unless you leave the door open. Also, keep in mind that you have to walk through one of the bedrooms to get to the front door and the kitchen. However, for such as good price, it is definitely a bargain.

No Surprises

I am glad, I like to find things out for myself. If I had listened to the last few reviews, we never would have stayed here. We we arrived, the welcoming staff ws waiting! A huge bull frog on the bottom step! Loved it! When we opened the door, it did in fact smell like my Grand mom's house. It took me back to my boyhood. Loved it! A push of a button and the window a/c popped to life. One couldn't help but notice the major upgrade in progress, Wall mounted, zonal dual units.Great choice, but , that;'s the Engineer in me. Love it! In the dining area, there is even a stand alone a/c unit. We used it to cool down the place and never needed it again! The window unit kept it at 72! Loved it! The sulphur smell? Don't get to the mountains much, huh? It went right away and we used the water for cooking and drinking. Hot tube? LOVED IT! The mattress is one of those things that one person would like and another may not. I have rods and screws holding my spine together, so we always travel with our queen size air mattress. Water pressure? It's a well people! You only get what Mother Earth is willing to give! And, YES, it was clean, even with the work going on. The best part was the lawn care guys knocking on the door and asking if it were ok to do the lawn. How thoughtful! We enjoyed the river, the house and the grounds.Watching the storms come together and move over the mountains was spectacular ! Worth the price, but not the bad reviews! Thank you for sharing your place with us!

Not Great Even with Managed Expectations

The location of this place is ideal. Across the street access to the river, great neighborhood, and short drive to Luray. I was grateful the owners described it as not luxury to help manage expectations but this place fell short of that. Used underwear in the bedroom corner, shower floor that required a run to Wal Mart for shower shoes, strong smell of what I hope was sulfer out the bathroom faucet, dirty refrigerator, see through or non-existent curtains. Just a bunch of little problems that make the place a little creepy but could be remedied easily to bring up the rating. I had a friend who was supposed to join me for the weekend but I told him to stay in DC as I didn't want him to endure the disappointment. Overall, I would not recommend this place. However, if you desperately need a spot and there's no other availability in the area, then be sure to pay additional money and get access to the entire house since it may be cleaner/neater than the studio portion (no bedroom door) I rented.

Very uncomfortable. Terrible experience

We did not like the property at all. Only the good thing was the location which was very convenient and the house was clean. The not so good things are as follows:- The beds and pillows were very uncomfortable. I slept on the couch as that was a little better. The bedroom did not have air conditioning and it was very warm and uncomfortable. The AC in living room could not cool the bedroom. The hot tub outside, we could not use as the water would not get hot no matter how we tried. The bathroom shower water pressure was so low that it was hard to take a good bath. I understand the rustic part but everything in the house was so not comfortable including the kitchen table chairs. I could not wait to get back home.

Frustrating Experience

I chose this pleasantly located cottage as romantic getaway for the hot tub view, but it turned into a very frustrating experience. This would likely be better value for large group, since for two they only open kitchen/dining area, small LR and very small BR. (Tip: To sleep past dawn, hang blanket over window blinds.) Adequately furnished, but couldn't set temp on cold window AC, so turned on or off as needed. Owners did respond to emails/calls when TV/DVD weren't per instructions, and they had maintenance phone us when hot tub quit working. That was huge frustration with facility and with customer service. Tried everything maintenance suggested over phone but couldn't restart it. OK: these things can happen with an older tub (when it was on we hadn't been able to reset temp). I asked owners to refund payment for 2nd night since my initial email said that hot tub was why I chose the place. They cited protective (for them) contract clause and got snarky about shifting fault to us. Though no problems noted with condition of property when we left, it took over a week for my deposit to be refunded. Others have had better visits, but I was put off as much by owners' attitude after problem as by problem itself. (Note: almost never got signal enough to make or receive Verizon call on iPhone.)

I grew up on a ranch in a rural part of California. Traveling often to Washington DC I found it was a perfect place to stay in touch with nature and to be in a peaceful environment far from the busy urban world. Yet I liked having access to Washington DC, which has all the entertainment one can possibly have from any large city.

Why they chose this property

I chose this place because it is full of nature and beauty, which it affords access to the nation’s capital. Whether one wishes to take it easy and just let time stop or be active in water sports or hiking, this place is ideal for both. I cannot think of a more beautiful home for getting away from it all!

What makes this property unique

Guests have access to a private entrance to the Shenandoah River, which is just across the home. The area was recently designated a national landmark by the U.S. Department of Interior because of its beauty and historical importance.

You can do a little bit of hiking on your own backyard little forest and small hill.

Keep connected to the world and have the comforts of technology by having access to internet, phone service and Satellite TV.

In particular, a favorite activity is to take the Skyline Drive, which is operated by the National Park Service. Alternatively, visit the Luray Caverns, which is just a 15 minute drive from the home. Shopping and restaurants are just 15 minutes from the home.
