About this property

Cottage & Guest House - Lake Thompson, Poland Spring, Maine

Vintage Cottage surrounded by window boxes of flowers, and Guest House a few feet behind it are just steps away from Lake Thompson (11 miles long, max depth of 121', and several islands). Since the lake is spring fed by the Poland Springs aquifer, it's considered to be one of the most pristine glacial lakes in Maine.

We are on the East side and so we get spectacular sunsets. Peaceful, private setting among 100+ yr old trees, lush ferns, old stone walls that were built before the trees grew. We have no ambient light so you see lots of stars, and no background noise - you won't believe how quiet it is!

We recently reworked the cottage floor plan and refurbished it with all new thermopane windows - adding many to be able to see woods from every room; completely new kitchen and bath with tub/shower; 3/4' pine paneling throughout; porch surrounded by casement windows/screens; new roof; 10' pine tree bear sculpture... and we aren't done yet!

Cottage is open from the kitchen to the family room which has a cathedral ceiling with paddle fan and clerestory windows providing lots of light and wonderful views from the loft. Great for entertaining.

All mattresses in the cottage and the guest house are new within a few years. The cottage 1st floor bedroom has 1 dbl bed, and a wall of windows that looks out on the old stone wall, huge pine trees, the lake, and unbelievable sunsets.

The cottage loft has 1 twin and 1 dbl bed. Also new windows… one of them is a skylight that opens so you can hear the loons and see the stars as you have never seen them. The loft is across from the clerestory windows with a great view of the lake.

The Guest house 1st floor: 1 queen bed and a set of bunks (and washer and dryer). It has ¾” pine walls and ceilings and all new windows. The 2nd floor has 2 queen beds, and room for a 2nd set of bunks, or a crib, or pack and play. It has a cathedral ceiling, two skylights and a paddle fan.

Duck families will visit, loons will serenade you, and we have often sited deer, moose, foxes, etc. Very good fishing for salmon, lake trout and bass.

Fernwood Camp (girl's camp) owns a large land buffer between us and so we have a lot of privacy and the land feels as much like ours as theirs. Fernwood sprays for mosquitoes too which is great.

The property will be cleaned before you arrive and we ask that you leave it as you found it, and remove your own trash - dump is less than a mile away. Deposit fee of $500 is due with lease agreement, and rental fee is due 30 days before arrival. Deposit will be returned if there is no damage or excessive cleaning.

No Pets. No smoking inside.

Such a great place!
We loved our time at Thompson Lake. Annie was a great communicator and helped us to figure out the web access. The site is extraordinary and the water pristine! Neighbors were lovely! We hope to return next summer!

Idyllic getaway
We had such a blast hanging out with our coffees and enjoying the view! We took advantage of the awesome floats and canoe and kayak and honestly, it made me want to have a place of my own! Thompson Lake is just stunning and you have the perfect view right here.

Great family time
My family and I (there are 11 of us), vacation in this area every year. Annie's place worked well for us. The main house is right on the lake with enough room for us all to sit and enjoy, including our fur baby.

Perfect Reunion Location
It was a perfect fit for us as we had 10 family coming and going during the week between the ages of 86 and 14. Most all of these loved the swimming, sunbathing, running and canoeing at this lovely spot. We were blessed with perfect weather!

Already booked for next year
My family had the pleasure of staying at the cottages in August 2015. We liked it so much we are already booked for next year. We spent most of our time outside because the waterfront and weather were awesome --- crystal clear lake, awesome swim area with a sandy gradual drop off, dock, canoe, small boat with a motor, lakeside firepit, outdoor chairs, 2 canopy covered swings, large picnic table, and a gas grill. There were also blueberry bushes on the property for picking and making blueberry pancakes. The cottages were clean, comfortable and well maintained. The kitchen had everything needed to prepare meals and cook. There were also a few farm stands on the main road which were handy for picking up fresh veggies. The lake has a marina for renting boats and The Outpost (store/pizza/subs) that you can get to by boat or car. My family has been renting lakefront properties in NH & ME over the past 20 years and this place has everything we look for and is only the second place we have ever rented more than one time. So glad we found this peaceful, comfortable, relaxing, awesome property!!

2015 family getaway
We rented this place for two weeks this summer..It had all we were looking for and more..Plenty of sleeping space for our large extended family and friends..We enjoyed barbecues, campfires and fun in the sun swimming off the dock and renting a boat for a day of tubing it was fantastic .The neighbor who owns the property next door was friendly and accommodating to our parking needs . Did not want to leave kids had a blast . Great for all ages. I must also mention the caretakers who brought us wood and came whenever we needed .Booked already for next year .

Best week of the year
We are now regulars at Thompson Lake and hope to spend time every summer there. What we love most about this place is the "feel" - the comfortable, positive vibe. That said, it is quaint and lake-y, but still clean and not too campy. We love that there are two buildings for sleeping. This allows the younger kids to be able to nap and get to bed early while adults can still be in the main cottage and not have to tiptoe around. We go with our family (parents, two young kids and dog) and my parents. The place is comfortable for all six of us, plus an occasional visitor or two. The lake itself is pristine- so clean and clear, and the fact that this camp has a sandy beach along with a dock is fantastic for kids. We've ventured out to the Gray Animal Farm, the New Balance Outlet, and lots of miles running and biking around the lake. Very highly recommended for families with young kids. They even have their own pack and play! Thanks Kat!

Our Family Vacation, 3 generations strong!!!!
We arrived at the cottage and were very pleased with what we found. Our family consists of Mom and Dad, 4 adult children, 2 spouses, 2 grandchildren and a grand dog. Thanks to the Guest house we all found comfortable places to sleep. The beach was great with an easy walkout for all. We brought our own boat so fishing and boating were enjoyed by all. One night we had lobsters and called the caretakers to find out what to do with trash as we didn't want the wildlife to visit, they kindly came and took it away for us! The kitchen was well stocked. When we were cooking, we would say I wonder where the ------is, and open a draw or cabinet and there it would be. We reccomend a visit to the Gray Wildlife Park and the petting zoo on 26. The Pizza from the store at the petting zoo was really good. We will be returning in in 2014 and fully expect to have a wonderful time once again.

Lovely location with challenging landlord
The cottage and guest house are easy driving distance from Portland, and they're well stocked -- a great deal of kitchen supplies and lots of outdoor equipment, including use of a motorboat, which we really appreciated. The layout of the cottage and guest house were a little challenging for our group of two couples with one child each -- especially since those of us who stayed in the guest house had to go over to the main house to go to the bathroom. But in general the property is as described on this site, and it was clean and well maintained. My biggest caveat, however, concerns the owner, who was very disorganized and incredibly inappropriate in her conversations with me. She lost the payment we sent well in advance of our stay, and became quite hostile when she discovered the problem. Despite a wealth of communication - and evidence of payment! - on our end, she accused us of trying to cheat her and was incredibly unpleasant to deal with. The issue was eventually resolved, but we will not be returning and would not recommend this property.

Wonderful!
My family had such a delightful time in this cottage. The lake is just amazingly beautiful and the location of the cottage is just perfect. There is nothing like being able to completely relax with your family in a pretty setting. With nothing to worry about, we were able to really reconnect and reenergize. We will definitely be back!

Lake Thompson Charming Cottage
When Kat asked me to write a review for her about out stay last year, I was eager to help out as my first impression of this property was outstanding largely due to the great attention to detail and personal approach that she took in answering all my questions and making sure we made the most of our vacation. And did we ever! This was the first vacation where I really feel like my husband and I totally unplugged. From the tranquility of having a cup of coffee on the porch as the sun starts to peek through the pine trees, to a sunset cocktail on the beach listening to the loons serenade each other, it was truly a peaceful and special place. I’m ready to go back this year again. We explored the lake by canoe in the mornings, swam all day with the kids, and generally planned each day around the food items we hold dear to Maine: Homemade blueberry pie, fresh corn on the cob, haddock chowda, homemade ice cream from the local farms, white Vermont cheddar cheese, lobster rolls, steamers, and lobster bakes on the beach around the fire pit. We had a pretty good sized group of 5 adults and 3 toddlers and the camp suited us well. It’s truly one of the more charming cottages we’ve ever rented and we all felt instantly at home. With so much to do, the kids were always entertained and the parents got some much needed down time! Thank you Kat for sharing your lovely family camp to us.

Don’t miss out on this amazing experience!
Many of our fondest vacation memories are from our stay at this adorable property on Lake Thompson. Due to our great experience, I fully intended to write a review in 2011 after our stay. The arrival of our son got in my way, so when Kathleen asked us to write a review this year, I was thrilled to help! We weren’t able to get back to the cottage last year like we had hoped, but we will be returning this summer. We look forward to another week of relaxing in the sun and swimming in the beautiful and crystal clear lake. Some our other favorite past times were lobster and pizza feasts on the picnic tables, fishing, snorkeling, playing cards on the porch, sunset canoe rides, camp fires and star gazing from the dock. Although most of our time was spent at the cottage, we ventured out to an animal farm/ice cream stand and the Shaker Village. The cottage accommodated our large group of 6 adults and 2 children with room to spare. The beds were comfortable and all the necessary amenities were provided including sheets and towels, large pots for cooking lobster and corn on the cob, window fans, a large grill and outdoor tables and chairs. All the personal touches made our family feel at home and the beautiful lake and warm weather left us coming back for more

Thompson Lake's glorious water!
This camp means to me is the following: fresh lobster and Five Corners pizza on the picnic table, grape-nut ice cream and fresh corn and blue berries from the local farm, spending all day in your bathing suit with frequent dips in Thompson Lake's glorious water, laying out on the dock and playing "king of the float", endless cribbage, Scrabble and hand and foot games, getting lost in my favorite book in the hammock, bass fishing (still think I hold the record for the largest caught bass in our family) and canoe rides, pink and purple sunsets over a glassy lake, star filled nights without a light for miles to dull the beauty of evening, campfires accompanied by stories and your drink of choice, waking up in the loft to call of the loon and the warm sun over a glossy lake... AND then doing it all over again. This Cottage is my heaven and I can hardly wait to bring my children to camp and help them to create new memories that they will want to pass on to their children.

Beautiful Cottage, Beautiful Lake
Great getaway spot-- its surrounded by nothing but woods on two sides and it has a nice sandy beach right on the lake. The crystal clear spring fed water is amazing for swimming! It has a very cool rocky point that juts out into the lake that is perfect for either fishing or quiet contemplation. Lots of recent updates. Because it has the main cottage and the guest house, it is ideal for a two family vacation.

About the host

Hosted by Annie Holman

Host profile image
My parents purchased this property in 1954. The values and ethics my family hold come from the crystal clear waters of our summers growing up at Lake Thompson. I have lived all over the US and traveled to many countries, but there is no place like this tiny piece of terra on our wonderful Earth.

Why they chose this property

Unique. 2 buildings (babies in one and grandparents in the other). 20 ft' from the water with sandy gradual slope, special for children and Grands. Pristine water from Poland Springs aquifer. Well appointed and caretakers 1 mile away. Open skylights and no ambient light. Loons, ducks, lot of fish, frogs, turtles, canoe, boat/motor, many islands to explore. Close to the ocean - get salty and wash off in the lake! What else could you want?

What makes this property unique

On the E side we see the most spectacular sunsets. Big kitchen and family room with a cathedral ceiling, window walls to view the lake, spectacular trees, and ancient stone walls. Huge clerestory windows face the lake. Ceramic top/self cleaning oven: well equipped kitchen, huge lobster pot and grill. Guests say the beds are great. (You may use our linens and towels.)

Our neighbor is Fernwood Camp, so we have a buffer for privacy. The most clear water you will ever see, fire pit... it doesn't get any better.

Other amenities: air conditioning, WIFI, ceiling fans, skylights, Monitor heating, new TV, DVD, picnic table, 2 swinging hammocks, canoe, 10' aluminum fishing boat with 7 horse motor. Dock can easily accommodate a 21'+ boat and is protected by a breakwater of boulders. If you need a bigger boat, rentals are nearby.
