About this property

Relax & Explore in the San Juans

Cozy, log cabin situated at 9,500 feet elevation surrounded by aspen and pine trees. If you love the outdoors or just want to get away from it all, this is the place to consider. You'll enjoy having your early morning coffee outdoors and will probably be greeted by the neighborhood deer, snowshoe rabbits, and other wildlife, including an occasional bear. There is outdoor log furniture and chairs for lounging and the spacious redwood deck has two tables for ample seating. For easy grilling there is a Weber gas grill and the kitchen was just remodeled and is a chef's delight. Ample dishes & cooking ware, spices, new appliances. There is also a restaurant & lounge with a friendly staff which is located approximately one mile from the cabin. We are located in Arrowhead Ranch Mountain Subdivision - is somewhat off the beaten path but has well maintained roads and offers the peace and solitude that we all long for. Recommend front wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. DURING 2021 through 2023, THERE IS ROAD CONSTRUCTION ON HIGHWAY 50, BETWEEN CIMARRON & GUNNISON, COLORADO THAT LIMITS ACCESS TO MOUNTAIN SUBDIVISION AND PROPERTY. CONTACT OWNER FOR DETAILS AND SCHEDULE OF ACCESS.

There are 3 private lakes in the subdivision, hiking, walking, four wheeling, fishing, mountain biking, sightseeing. Blue Mesa Reservoir is approximately 15 miles away, the breathtaking Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument is 28 miles away. There are airports in Gunnison and Montrose which are approximately 40 miles each way.

Beautiful Cabin
We enjoyed our stay very much. The cabin is well taken care of and the kitchen is well stocked to be able to cook nice meals. We would suggest doing your grocery shopping before you get there as this cabin is somewhat secluded. The owner was amazing to work with.

Excellent Spot
The host, Mary, was extremely kind and considerate. The cabin was spotless, well appointed and located in a nice quiet spot. The road access from the main drag was a pleasant easy drive. The “subdivision” had a nice lodge with full bar and clean amenities. If you want to go to a place where it is peaceful, quiet and accessible to Montrose, Gunnison and Lake City this is the spot. Thank you Mary

Great Place, Highly Recommend
Mary's place was great, very clean, welcoming and comfortable and had everything we needed for a great stay, Mary kept in communication with us throughout our stay. We were there at the perfect time for seeing the aspens at their peak color change. We took our OHV and was able to drive from the cabin which was a big plus for us. The construction on US 50 was no inconvenience to us, it just gave us a reason to stay at the cabin more which was perfect for us. Very much enjoyed the quietness and being able to see the stars. We definitely plan on returning.

Wonderful!!
This place is quite a was out from town but that is exactly what we were looking for. Rode four wheelers and side by side around several trails around the subdivision so we didn’t have to haul them anywhere. Couldn’t of asked for a better family vacation!!

Cozy Castaway Cabin: off the beaten path
We spent 4 nights at Mary's Castaway cabin. The cabin was beautifully decorated to give it that extra mountain cabin flair. We found it to have all the amenities we needed, including a cozy propane stove for our cold mornings and snowy day. My boys, ages 11 and 15, enjoyed relaxing and sleeping in the loft. We knew about the Rte. 50 road closures prior to booking the cabin. We did travel to Black Canyon of the Gunnison and Curancanti on the weekend. On the weekdays, to avoid the road construction, we stayed within the community of Arrowhead and found it to be fun to explore by foot and bike. We walked to 2 of the lakes in the community from the cabin, and enjoyed the fall colors of the aspens, snow covered pine trees, and the many deer who came out to greet us. Mary was very responsive with questions both prior to and during our stay. We would definitely return to this cabin if in the area again!

July vacation 2021
We had a great time staying at the cabin in the mountains. My husband and I were there with my sister and her husband and we pulled trailers in order to ride our side by sides in this beautiful area. We loved being able to walk out the front door and go riding without trailing anywhere. The main road into the cabin was closed part of the time for road construction but we were made aware before our stay so we planned around the scheduled closing and we had no issues.

A little far off the beaten path, but well worth it - the woods, the wildlife, the stars, the peace - fall is a spectacular time to visit

Great Getaway
We had a wonderful stay at The Castaway cabin! It was a great home base for the area: a day trip to Ouray, Black Canyon of the Gunnison and Curecanti National Recreation Area. The cabin was very clean and so wonderfully decorated! We appreciate taking the time to make our own meals and were thankful that the kitchen had all of the equipment that we needed. The cabin did have a few other cabins that were close to it that we weren't expecting but there weren't any visitors at those cabins so we still felt secluded and it was quiet. Thank you, Mary, for a wonderful cabin to call "home" for a week! It was fantastic!

Couldn’t Be Better
We spent 7 days in this great place! The house was just what Mary had described...clean, neat, quiet, well-stocked with spices that made fixing a meal easy, and comfortable enough to sit, read, sleep, and relax listening to the rainfall. We saw deer with a fawn and a coyote! As time drew closer to leaving, we almost made a call to see if it was available for another “few days”. Very hard to leave the cool mountain air for Texas 100 degree temps! Thanks, Mary, and as soon as we set dates for another trip to the mountains, we’ll be looking at your place!

Excellent get away
Secluded haven with plenty of wooded area and big night sky viewing around the campfire. Deer were often walking across the yard in the early morning or late evening. Very relaxing and enjoyable. Every convenience of home but still in the wilderness. The town of Montrose is just close enough to get any forgotten items.

Beautiful and Fairly Remote
This was exactly what we wanted- a very nice house that we could call home for a short time.House is very well kept and clean. Very quiet except when my husband put out tons of seed for the Stellars Jays. These are bright blue and noisy. We also had White chinned swifts and countless chipmonks and ground squirrels and a few rabbits and deer. We heard elk in the evening but did not see any. Location conveniant to Black Canyon (Awesome), weather very nice with nights at 60 or so. Coming from Texas where it has been over 100 for the entire summer, this was fabulous. Loved the wildlife!!! Lovely Cabin in Serene Setting
My husband and I enjoyed a relaxing four night stay in this well appointed cabin that had everything we needed to be comfortable and happy. The big wrap around deck was a joy and our dog and I really enjoyed sitting out there. I liked watching the sunsets and stars from the deck too. The stars were out in heavenly force. My husband enjoyed grilling on the deck and did all of the cooking! The lakes were so beautiful and made for pastoral lunch scenes. We enjoyed Flint Lakes and Hazel Lake as well as the cozy coves and beaches found on the big Blue Mesa reservoir. We loved the aspens and the wildlife, including deer, a red-winged black bird, a frog, squirrels and neon blue dragonflies a plenty! Thanks so much for the wonderful vacation. The Many's

Truly Peaceful & Serene Cozy Cabin
My husband & I SO enjoyed our week long stay in this cozy, home like cabin. The wooded surroundings made for an idyllic stay in the mountains of Colorado. The fall colors were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! Made for perfect pictures. We were able to explore the Black Canyon of Gunnison, The Arches Nat'l Park in Utah (although be it a VERY LONG DAY!), a hike to & from Evergreen Lake several times, Pine Creek Trail, and rediscovering Ridgeway & Ouray as well. With shopping in between too! It all made for a wonderful vacation away from the city and the heat of Texas. We look forward to returning again & again! And being that its pet friendly is a huge factor for us as well. Thank you for the wonderful welcome & hospitality!

Takes your breath away!
I cannot say enough about the beauty we observed while we were there. Our family (2 adults and 3 children) enjoyed a weeks stay here at a beautiful home away from home cabin. There were a few different areas to fish and we enjoyed daily walks. We could not have asked for anything better. We had a gorgeous doe that came right up to the deck each morning, making my morning coffee more enjoyable. We saw mule deer close by and there were several other critters that would come up close. There was a local restaurant on the "property" where the locals made everyone feel welcome!!! We took several day trips that were close and enjoyed every minute of our adventures. We could have asked for nothing more! Being a great home away from home it seemed to go way to quick! We would come back again and highly recommend contacting the owner to schedule your next vacation. (We're just sorry it took us so long to write a review...) It was nice to disconnect from our busy schedules, spotty cell service but well worth it! Oh...and don't forget, pet friendly :) Even our four-legged children enjoyed!

Wonderful!!
My wife and I as well as another couple and their two sons spent a week at the cabin and hated having to leave!! The cabin is very well equipped, clean and comfortable. We were able to ride our ATV's from the property into the NF and enjoyed some great fly fishing in the NF. The cabin has a very secluded feel to it and the weather was fantastic. We saw deer in the yard and elk in the area. If you like the outdoors and the cool mountain air this is a wonderful place to be in August!!

I moved to Colorado in 1970, immediately fell in love with the mountains of the most beautiful state in the union. Twenty-seven years later I was able to purchase this small modest cabin which was as much in need of me and I was it. With the help of a friend, it has been a labor of love to totally remodel it into a beautiful, very comfortable & cozy cabin. I am now semi-retired and spend as much time as possible at the cabin. I find peace & contentment in the mountains & I love sharing my cabin with family & friends.
