About this property

Magical private estate:3 bed Sage Cottage, big porch near Cambridge Beaches & fun

The Watlington family have recently created a vacation home in Bermuda, specifically with the nicest people in mind as we share so much history and tradition. We call it: SAGE COTTAGE AT MANGROVE BAY in Somerset, Bermuda. The secret that gives this exceptionally charming 3 bed, 2 bath cottage it’s big house feel is it’s long and wide ‘Porch.’ Some folks call them ‘Piazzas’…where one is famously “licensed to chill” and enjoy the many blessings around you. Inside Sage, enjoy the traditional proportions of this new, old style home that is nestled beautifully in its own lovely corner on the spacious grounds of this very private estate…a mellowed by time botanical wonderland of some 5 acres, stretching down to its conservation coastline beside the waters of Mangrove Bay. Sage is adjacent to the iconic amenities of the Cambridge Beaches resort and its 1st Class restaurant ‘Breezes’… “that puts even St.Tropez in the shade.” We are also very close to sailboat and motorboat rentals, shipwreck diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, paddle boarding, etc. Also: discover our restored Royal Navy Dockyard just up the road…full of Bermuda’s art and history with restaurants, art galleries, lovely shops and the National Museum. Transport-Wise, there are pedal bikes, mopeds and electric four-wheel vehicle rentals nearby. Also, alternatively, we are walkable to both ferries and buses. There are numerous Nature Walks in just about every direction. The Railway Trail, starting right here in Somerset, goes all the way to the other end of Bermuda. Additionally, we can show you some of the best harder-to-find nature reserves and trails that are worth seeking out island wide. The owners are honored to host you and have been voted “super hosts” by recent guests. If you are looking for something rather splendid in a uniquely idyllic setting, this is it, Sage Cottage…Unspoiled, Unhurried, Uncommon. The easy way to book this special place online is as follows: Simply Google: ‘Sage Cottage at Mangrove Bay’ and it comes right up on both Airbandb and VRBO travel sites. You can book Sage Cottage on whichever one you prefer. P.S. Complimentary bottle of wine is waiting for you in the fridge- after your flight to Bermuda.

Pretty garden cottage

Cozy cottage in a lush garden setting, large porch with plenty of seating and a large dining set. The cottage was very quaint, antique furniture and some lovely artwork. The family were so welcoming and helpful. The cottage location was 10 minutes from beautiful beaches and Breezes restaurant at Cambridge Beaches, 5 minutes in the other direction the village and bus stop.

Perfect Week in Bermuda!

Thanks to Tom, Victoria and family for a great week in Bermuda! The property was as shown in the photos and had plenty of space for our group of four adults. Hosts had great recommendations for beaches and food to try in the area, as well as lots of knowledge about Bermuda and its history. I loved spending my evening after a beach day or day exploring on the porch! I would stay here again and recommend this property to anyone who wants a genuine Bermuda experience.

Blissful cottage, lovely hosts

Had a wonderful relaxed time at Sage Cottage. Tom and the Watlington family are incredible hosts, friendly and with so much interesting local knowhow. The cottage is even better than the pictures and the surrounding garden is beautiful. Can't wait to go back and stay longer.

Sage Cottage in Beautiful Bermuda

My family and I (two adult children, and my wife and I) had a wonderful time visiting Bermuda, staying in Tom Watlington's Sage Cottage. Tom and his brother Hartley were great hosts, even showing us around the local area and helping us get groceries on our first day in Somerset Village. It was great! The property was nicely located, just across from Mangrove Bay and a short walk from Cambridge Beaches and the nearest bus stop. One point of feedback, the property is hard to find. Before checking in, i got a message recommending two local taxi drivers, but unfortunately, neither of them were available to drive us to the property on the day of our arrival - so word to the wise, book these drivers as soon as you can! So we hired a taxi driver at the airport, and the property was VERY hard to find. It's secluded off a dirt road (which was great, once we found it), but there weren't clear instructions on how to arrive, and worse, the host had changed his phone number so the number on the listing wasn't in service. I'd recommend more clear, step-by-step directions and correcting the phone number. One other issue, the hot water heater had to be manually turned on by pushing a button a couple of times. Aside from that, it was a great stay and a wonderful experience and i'd highly recommend it to anyone wanting a great vacation in beautiful Bermuda!!

Weekend away

I organized a weekend away with friends to celebrate milestone wedding anniversaries. Our stay at Sage Cottage was lovely and Tom our host was very accommodating especially offering to drive us to the local supermarket after our late evening arrival. Sommerset village is a lovely quiet spot on the island but i would recommend some sort of transport while staying here. We rented two e-cars and there was plenty of room to park and to charge up at night. The cottage was well stocked and the washer/dryer was a real help especially with the humid weather we had.

The property was surrounded by gorgeous palms trees, flowers, local plants and very private. The large porch is absolutely beautiful to relax on and Long Bay Beach is a short walk away and one of the best on the island. The grocery store and bus stop are convenient to walk to but nothing beats the owner Tom and his family! Their hospitality and sharing of Bermudian history were the icing on the cake!

Re-connecting with Bermuda

Thank you for your hospitality and welcoming us to your cottage. What a wonderful time my family and I had sharing stories and showing us around . They now have new stories of our fantastic time together in Bermuda. For me, your beautiful home took me back to when I lived here. The pictures don’t do the cottage or carpentry justice. It was hard to explain what it was like here, and now they have a feel of what it was like. Thank you for everything!

Wedding

Absolutely fantastic home with extremely helpful, knowledgeable (island history), & accommodating host! After a stay in Sage Cottage I would find it difficult to believe anyone would not be planning their next visit before leaving like we were. Recommend at least a 10 day stay because you simply can't do it all in a week.

Sage cottage stay

Our stay at Sage Cottage was a true Bermuda experience. Our host and his family were very welcoming and took us to places we never would have discovered on our own. We learned about the history and culture of Bermuda and were entertained with stories about the Wattlington family. Despite the less than perfect weather, we were able to see the island from end to end on the buses and the ferry, both of which were easy to access from Sage Cottage. Thank you Tom, Hartley and Victoria.

Super host and beautiful location

We've had a wonderful stay at Sage cottage, a large traditional Bermudian home in beautiful grounds close to the local beaches. Tom our host was great giving us lots of information and interesting tales, and upon arrival drove us around the local sites and took us shopping to stock up on initial provisions. The large veranda was perfect for relaxing with friends and family and also for eating outside. The perfect place to explore the island from or to enjoy on the few rainy days we had during our visit. We're hoping to come back in the not so distant future.

A little taste of heaven

We loved staying at Sage. When we’re first arrived we met the sister who showed us around, walked me to the beach. Then we met Tom, one of the nicest men we ever met. He was so kind. He spent a lot of time with us. He took us down to the docks where the cruise ships come in and we spent hours there. The property is very nice, lushness indescribable. I’m a walker so I really enjoyed walking the property. I have a video where I walked from the street to the cottage. The cottage had everything we needed. It was spacious and clean. We were there 8 days and didn’t want to leave. Location is remote but it’s so beautiful it didn’t matter. I loved the location as I’m a nature person. Roosters crowing, bird singing. The bus is a 6 minute walk. I walked to a beach, 10 minute walk. I highly recommend Sage cottage.

Good location, near bus routes and ferry. Owner was very willing to provide anything requested, as well as airport transportation. He was knowledgeable about the area, and even took us on a boat tour culminating at his private island where we had lunch in a beautiful house and setting. Didn’t like the rain for the first part of our stay. Lol.

Listing is not accurate

There is no AC around the house, place was impossible to find, bulldog was present when the neighbor finally led us there and the house was very dirty. Didn’t bother to clean out the fridge. We are still waiting for our refund promised by the owner and have a filed a dispute. Hope he does the right thing and updates his listing and pictures for accuracy.

Traditional Bermudian home

We wanted to find a place that would help invest us in the unique oceanic culture of Bermuda, it turned out be much more. Owner Thomas' family arrived on the first boat, 1609. He has spent his life on the island building traditional Bermudian homes crafting all the woodwork himself from dense native cedar. As you might imagine, his knowledge of the island special. The cottage is outfitted like your home, not a rental property. Walking distance to beaches, dinning, watersport rentals, bus stops. Even if you already understand what a treasure Bermuda is nestled within it's protective reefs in the sub-tropical Atlantic, staying with Thomas at Sage Cottage can only enrich your experience of this beautiful country.

Extremely hospitable host & a magical home that’s fully equipped with everything you need

This home has everything you need for a vacation. Our gracious host had maps, sunscreen, beach towels, bath towels, condiments, and much more for our family to use if needed. The home is stocked with brand new appliances including a working washer, dryer, and dish washer. The house is filled with the most beautiful artwork and rustic charm, it is surrounded by every type of plant Bermuda has to offer which we found amazing. Our host let us check-in early since we had an early flight and was extremely easy to communicate with. He was very accommodating to anything we needed. Will definitely be staying here again. My family and I had the best experience in this home along with getting to know the owner. Our host brought us fresh bananas and even provided transportation for us when needed. We felt most comfortable on this vacation and our trip was unforgettable.

Sage Cottage

Our week in Bermuda turned out to be cold, windy, and rainy. We ended up playing games in front of a warm fire instead of snorkeling at the beach. Not at all what we'd expected, but we can't control the weather and made the best of the situation. Our trip would have been pretty disappointing if not for Tom and Sage Cottage. Tom was a fantastic host. He's a local who knows the island well and showed us all of the best spots. A bus stop is close by and busses are frequent/easy to navigate. Sage Cottage had plenty of privacy for our group of two couples. Much of the artwork was painted by members of the Watlington family, so it was fun to see. Washer and dryer in unit were a great convenience. Lots of extra towels and beach towels. We bought groceries from the Market (easy walking distance) and cooked quite a few meals at home. Tom recommended Il Pomodoro, a delicious pizza place just down the street. Easy to walk to and we went a few times because the pizza was so good. We also enjoyed dinner a more expensive but really delicious dinner at the Sunken Harbor in Cambridge Beaches. Interesting to learn more there about Teddy Tucker and the treasures he discovered. Tom is a great source of information and we loved hearing about the history of his family and the island. Although we didn't have the sunny beach vacation we'd planned, Tom and his family truly helped to make this a vacation we will not forget.
