About this property

Central to Resort Territory

Perched high on top of a hill in the quaint town of Akeley, Minnesota, this attached apartment promises serenity, wildlife, and sunrise views. Attached apartment offers a private drive, spacious parking/unloading, a secondary entrance shared only with the studio (under construction), a full kitchen, and 2nd floor balcony overlooking the courtyard and back acreage. Connected directly to the Round River Drive ATV trail, and only a short drive to the Nevis Wilder snow mobile trail, public Eleventh Crow Wing lake/fishing pier, and Heartland State Trail.

The space:

Welcome to our secluded castle tower!

Tucked among the Red Pines, Northern White Cedars, mature Oaks, and Norway Spruce, our home invites all types of wildlife to its door. We see deer, turkeys, eagles, ducks, geese, and many types of butterflies/bees/lightning bugs/insect friends daily. We also hear Loons, owls, and often coyote from the woods.

Our home:

While not a true castle, the creators of this unique home were very skilled artists who modeled the home after the renaissance era. They included a stone exterior, weathervanes, fleur de lis' throughout, and an English garden in front.
We occupy the main house year-round along with our furry companions, but give our guests complete privacy throughout their stay. This is achieved with a private drive and a separate entrance into the studio and apartment that is separate from the house.

Your apartment:

A much more modern addition, the second and third floor apartment located to the northeast of the home, has hand painted countertops displaying a birch forest transitioning through the seasons and a beautiful vintage window overlooking forest and prairie, with gorgeous views of the sunrise and stars. There is also an east-facing balcony located off the common area with seating for two.

Guest access:

We are excited that we can currently provide flexible check-in and check-out times; we just ask that guests don't check in prior to 8 am or check out after 8 pm. We hope this will allow you to make the most of all your days with us and ensure your trip is as relaxing as possible!

During your stay, you will have access to the private drive and the apartment. We also have a play area, a firepit, and a courtyard equipped with seating and a grill that are shared use between the main house and the apartment. We are also located on 20 acres with forest to explore, and green space on all sides for a lawn game, stroll, or picnic.

Other things to note:

We may be secluded but we are not lacking in nearby ammenities! We are in the heart of resort territory; 10 minutes to Nevis, 15 minutes to Walker, and 20 minutes to Park Rapids. You'll have quick access to gas stations/convenience stores, grocery stores (including plenty of organic/gluten-free/vegetarian/vegan options and specialty stores), shopping (boutiques, antiques, thrift, artisan malls, and more), and restaurants (American, Chinese, Mexican, Thai, etc.). You can also find live music nightly during the summer and events happening in all directions!

Family weekend.
We had a great time. They are in the process of some renovations, but that did not affect our stay. Was well stocked with condiments, toiletries and kids toys. The kids especially liked the craft supplies. Perfect location for ATV riders and the private, partially secluded driveway felt safe for the ATVs even when unattended. Would definitely recommend.

A Charming Retreat!
In a world where some vacation rentals can feel impersonal and uninspiring, this hidden gem stood out as a true home away from home. Unlike those sterile and bland accommodations, this was cozy and welcoming. It felt like stepping into the home of a dear friend, where every corner had a story to tell. The thoughtful touches throughout the space added an extra layer of comfort and joy. Stacks of books provided endless literary adventures, and the kid's corner was a haven for young ones seeking entertainment. It was heartwarming to see how much effort had been put into making guests of all ages feel at home. Between homemade soaps and farm-fresh eggs, there were so many little things that went above and beyond. It's those little gestures that make a significant difference, and I truly appreciated the care that went into every aspect of my experience. Holly's book of guidance and recommendations kept us busy the entire time we were there! We would certainly recommend staying here. From the charming and personalized touches to Holly's exceptional hospitality, every aspect surpassed my expectations. If you're seeking a place that feels like a home away from home, this is an absolute must-visit.

Great location to hit the ATV trails
The property was clean and worked well for my husband and I to leave directly from the driveway to the ATV trails that went into Paul Bunyan State Forest. The property owner was very quick to respond to any questions asked. She provided us with several ATV website links to gain an understanding of the trails in advance of our stay. The owner went out of her way to provide little conveniences to make the stay smooth and enjoyable, including a paper ATV map, access to the firepit in their backyard along with some firewood (we enjoyed a nice fire our second night), products for use in the shower and bathroom, and even some fresh eggs from their chickens. The bed was comfortable and although the bathroom and entry-way are works in progress, it didn't impact our ability to fully utilize the space. We also enjoyed sitting on the small deck, equipped with two chairs, on our first evening. Overall a nice experience.

Ryan and Holly, live on 20 acres in Akeley, MN with 3 of their 4 children (one is off to the cities and college already!), 2 rescue dogs (Domino & Jade), 2 rescue cats (Charlie & Wilbur), 20+chickens, and 2 turkeys. Ryan works as a service engineer for imaging equipment, and Holly works remotely as a government consultant. In their spare time they enjoy renovating their Castle to hopefully finish the prior owner's dream of turning it into a bed and breakfast. Holly is also a photographer and loves gardening, cooking, painting, crafting, sewing, making soap, brewing Kombucha, and many other home activities. Ryan is also working toward becoming an installer for solar systems but enjoys gaming, reading, working in the shop, all things technical, and learning more about the the unknowns of space and physics in his spare time.

Why they chose this property

Ryan and Holly bought the Castle in the fall of 2021, because they have had a 10+ year dream of owning a Bed and Breakfast, moving back to the country, being further North, having more room for gardening and raising animals, and overall, becoming more self sufficient. The Castle was previously owned by an artist who left hints of her creativity everywhere, including the gorgeous, hand-painted birch countertops in the apartment tower. When they first saw it in August of 2021, they fell in love with its character, its mystery, its history, and most of all, the remaining potential that they could define themselves.

What makes this property unique

The Castle is located in the center of resort territory, with dining and shopping opportunities everywhere. It is also within 5 minutes of public access to Eleventh Crow Wing Lake, situated directly on the Round River ATV Trail, and has direct access to the Park Rapids Snowmobile Trail system.
