Cozy stay next to outdoor fun

Another excellent stay at Clive's! The property is clean and well appointed with everything you need for a low-key stay. The wood-burning stove made for cozy nights after days spent on the water and in the woods in the NEK. We'll be back again.

A peaceful retreat

One of the best locations we have ever seen for hiking, nature, and wildlife. I appreciated Clive's attentiveness and guidance - that his family preserved the adjacent land is amazing! We feel so lucky to have enjoyed the cabin (which is exactly as the photos suggest, very cozy and comfortable). Do come prepared to cook your own meals, restaurants are scarce, but the kitchen is well equipped. We really didn't want to leave - it was such a lovely, peaceful retreat. Thank you, Clive and family!

Wild Beauty

Clive was a gracious host and we're thankful to his family for protecting these pristine woods and sharing this property with the public. We loved our few days in this location perched on top of a hill (more like a mountain!) overlooking a scenic mountain ridge and nestled in conserved forests. The only sounds were the cows at a nearby farm and a wealth of wildlife. Easy access to gorgeous trails and the lake made for a great getaway. The general store in town had all we needed for provisions and coffee and pastries from Front Seat in Hardwick were top notch. With the addition of a new, more comfortable mattress and seating, this would be a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate.

Loved it!

Great spot. Very tranquil with great views of the surrounding area. Short distance to several good markets and hikes. We jumped in the lake at the property after one hot day's trek. Kitchen is adequate for cooking, which we did. You can watch the sunrise over the distant hills and the fog burn off the low spots in the valley on cool mornings. Overall very very good, my only wish would be a new mattress on the big bed. Clive is a very cordial gent and welcomed us to this great hilltop hideaway himself. Thanks Clive!

Relaxing time

We had a great time exploring Greensboro, Hardwick and Craftsbury. The scenery is beautiful and easy to get immersed in right outside the door of the guesthouse. The local food was great. Thanks Clive for your hospitality.

Wonderful place to stay and play!

My husband and I and our dogs loved staying at the Guest Cottage - what a wonderful location on top of the hill, surrounded by conserved lands! My father joined us for a couple nights to celebrate father's day, and enjoyed it as well! From evening fires in the fireplace, to grilling in the yard and admiring the view, to the recreation opportunities (unparalleled walking access to Barr Hill Natural Area, paddling on Caspian, mountain biking in Craftsbury), and bushwhacking through the woods to Highland Lodge for margarita night (and tacos and ice cream!) - the Guest Cottage was the perfect place to spend a long weekend. We had trouble getting the wifi to work, but that just meant we had to play instead of working remotely - oh darn! ;)

The cottage was very charming. It was well stocked with everything you could need. The views were incredibe. The firepace was nice as the nights were chilly. Helpful information was provided regarding local places to visit and the owner was very friendly. Access to a private dock was great. Our dog enjoyed swimming in the lake. Stunning spot on Baker Hill

Reuniting with family in this charming and peaceful cottage was simply delightful. The privacy, sunlit views, hiking trails, access to Caspian Lake and surrounding countryside all came together to make our stay very special. The spacious cottage allowed us to enjoy gathering by the fire and space for cooking and enjoying wonderful meals together, with Willy’s country store and surrounding farm markets having all the essentials we could need. Feeling blessed to have been welcomed by the Gray family to their lovely Gray Eyrie cottage and very much look forward to returning in the future.

Quiet and restful in beautiful woods

Tough to be complete since I was sick and had a broken foot while there. Our plans to hike and bike were quashed. Water access was too far away and could not see the lake which was disappointing. Also would have liked an outdoor deck or porch. Great sun and a good mountain view. Cabin needs a little TLC. Incredibly beautiful woods and an extensive trail system enjoyed by my husband and our dogs. Great place to hunker down to read and write. Wonderful woodstove. Willy's store nearby is a jewel.

Greensboro

We were fortunate to have very nice weather. We walked to Barr Hill and swam in Caspian Lake. Great views and environment and the lake was refreshing and invigorating The Highland Lodge had food trucks Monday and Tuesday with delicious tacos and the best pizza we had during our stay plus a relaxing atmosphere. The local food and Hill Farmstead beer are a highlight of the area. Thanks to Nancy and Clive for their hospitality and tips on what to do locally We hope to return soon!

Woods & water

Clive's guest house is the perfect Vermont getaway - nestled up in the forest, with a private dock just a short drive away. The cottage is rustic, charming and comfortable, and we loved being able to walk over to Barr Hill to watch the sunset. Swimming and canoeing in beautiful Lake Caspian was the icing on the cake! Thank you, Clive, for sharing your family getaway with us.

Blissful hills and lake!

Lovely, cozy cottage tucked in the hills of the North East Kingdom. We spent a week swimming in the sublime waters of Caspian Lake, hiking the trails to Barr Hill and watching weather in the valley below. The house is fantastic--super usable, clean, and the family loved hanging out at night, reading by the fire and playing cards. Loved being outside the village, but accessible to the amenities like Willey's and Hill Farmstead. Check out Bread and Puppet and the Museum of Everyday Life just up the road in Glover for some local culture!

A fabulous retreat

We had a fabulous stay here. We could not ask for better hosts than Clive and Nancy. In addition to offering us a clean, well-appointed cabin situated above Caspian Lake and abutting Nature Conservancy land, we were warmly welcomed, invited to join them for a July 4th even, and offered all the information we needed about local events and spots to check out. Conversations with Clive gave us a great sense of the right history of his family's connections to the lake, Barr Hill, and Greensboro in general. We wanted for nothing and would go back in a heartbeat. The beauty of the night sky, the scent of sweetgrass on the hike up the hill, and the blessed quiet day and night are treasures.

Quaint Perfection

Our week long stay in this cottage was nothing short of wonderful. The cottage is equipped with all the kitchen items one needs to cook and enjoy full meals. The cottage is clean, has an inspirational view, and allows the guest to unwind after a day of hiking, swimming, canoeing or traveling. The bed was comfortable and we loved sleeping with the windows open and breathing in the fresh mountain air. The town of Greensboro is a classic New England town. We shopped for all of our food at Willeys (right in town). Willeys was fully stocked with Vermont foods, and we enjoyed local pies, cheese, breads, meats, fruits and veggies each day. We recommend going to Perennial pleasures and enjoying their deluxe tea (those scones and cucumber Sammie’s are AMAZING) and perusing the grounds, the Greensboro Historic Barn was enchanting and had some really beautiful gifts for purchase, definitely head to the Highland lodge for cocktails and delicious dinners, and the Arts center for a light alfresca lunch. Favorite activities: Our daily hike to Barr Hill each day for our morning excercise, swimming in the crystal clear lake, listening to the loons, canoeing on the lake, watching the sunrise from our cottage, eating local foods, and enjoying the quiet and natural beauty of the area. We cannot wait to return!

Gem of a Cabin

This cabin is in an amazing location for views and peacefulness. We hiked and canoed right there, and, being on the top of the hill, the views every morning were breathtaking. Loved the fireplace and the Barr Natural Reserve walking distance from the front door. Looking forward to going back soon.

We loved the Eyrie Cottage

My husband and I, together with two kids, two dogs, and a cat spent 8 blissful weeks in this cottage in each of the summers of 2012 and 2011, as well as shorter stays during the two previous summers. The cottage is simple, clean and comfortable, and its location is spectacular: at the end of a private road, high on a hill with a beautiful view of mountains out the windows of the main room, yet an easy drive to the village of Greensboro. You walk out of the cottage directly onto a private trail that takes you through gorgeous woods and back fields, eventually arriving at the Barr Hill Nature Preserve and further trails. Caspian Lake is at the bottom of the drive, and the shared private dock is a great place to swim. The Greys are wonderful and generous hosts, always available if needed. Things we did while we were there: hiked parts of the Long Trail; went to Bread and Puppet; visited Ben & Jerry's factory; visited St. Johnsbury, Montpelier, and Stowe; frequented the lovely Greensboro Public Library; shopped for delicious local produce at Pete's Greens and the Buffalo Mountain Coop; and of course swam in Caspian Lake and explored the woods and trails around the cottage. We loved staying in the cottage so much that last summer we decided to buy our own place; otherwise we would return every year in the future.

Great getaway from civilization

This was a nice little cabin that is both up in the mountains and near a lake. The cabin is up a steep gravel road that is secluded and quiet. There are a few nice hiking trails right on the property. The lake is across the street with a private dock and canoe. The cabin was clean and well maintained. Big windows to enjoy the beautiful view over the mountain. There is no TV and I didnt see a ping pong table, unless it was in the attic, but there is wireless internet so bring a laptop for entertainment at night. There is also plenty of books (adult and kid) and some kid toys. There is a nice fireplace in the livingroom with wood outside so make sure you bring supplies to make smores. There is the "Willies" store right down the road with plenty of food items so no worries if you forgot something at home. There is plenty to do within reasonable driving distance. Cabot creamery is about 20min away. Ben & Jerrys and Green Mountain Coffee are about an hour away. Vermont Teddy Bear and Lake Champlain Chocolates is about 2 hours. There are also several farmer markets on Thursday and Friday in the surrounding towns. Plenty of fresh organic food. Overall really great place to visit. Spend your days visiting the factories and farms and spend your nights by the fire roasting smores.
