Thanksgiving getaway

My family traveled to bar harbor for a Thanksgiving getaway. The location was ideal and within walking distance to everything downtown bar harbor. Kay was a wonderful host and responsive during our visit. The house was beautiful and spacious for our group of 9. She left us a lovely gift basket with lots of goodies we enjoyed. I would highly recommend this property.

Family trip

This big house had plenty of room for 9 adults. The house was very clean and the beds were nice. We were in walking distance to many things & the neighborhood was safe and quiet. Our hosts were very responsive prior to and during our stay.

Our stay was amazing!

We loved our stay at this large, historic home. The house was beautiful and clean and perfect for 4 adult friends. The location is amazing - walkable to the village. The front porch was a great spot for morning coffee or afternoon relaxation. The owner was easy to communicate with and there whenever I needed. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Bar Harbor and at this spectacular home.

Grand old house

Very well stocked. As an older house had to look for the light switches but figured it out. Lovely back family room with a piano. Very comfortable beds. Excellent location in town. Close to everything

Great location!

House was in a great spot and host was excellent with responsiveness and providing helpful information. The house has everything you need. It’s an old house so bathrooms and some aspects reflect that.

House and location can’t be beat

The house might be my wife’s dream house: lots of character but nicely updated. It was a hot week and the AC was strong. The grill was clean and ready to go. There were tons of games and puzzles for downtime. And the location is exceptional. Just a block to all the action, but still on a quiet street. It was perfect for our mini family reunion.

Great for large family. A lot of room to be together or apart

Wonderful, welcoming and well-stocked home. Our family of 9 adults loved it. Great spot to easily walk to anywhere in Bar Harbor - which we did for 4 days in a row. Good communication with the owner made it easy. Two car parking limit was a bit of a pinch but we found a creative way to park a third car off site. Highly recommended to any large group

Fabulous vacation

Staying at Kay's place was truly magical. The house was spotless and extremely spacious. My spouse, kids, and grandkids all found places to have time to themselves and time to gather together. The living room was perfect for playing games in the evening and just sitting around and talking. The location of this house couldn't have been more perfect: steps from the grocery store and the Village Green and bustling downtown. We all wished we could have stayed longer and would love to come back here when we come back to Bar Harbor!

Wonderful downtown location

We loved staying at this home. It was our first visit to Bar Harbor and we fell in love with both the home and the town. Just steps away is the charming downtown area with tons of shops and restaurants, around the corner is a grocery store, and a five minute drive gets you into Acadia National Park. Couldn't ask for a better location!

Wonderful rambling house, excellant location

We spent 5 days in Bar Harbor for a family get together. There were 4 adults and 5 children ranging from 15 to 23. The house was comfortable, had plenty of space and was centrally located. Would highly recommend.

Awesome Bar Harbor vacation get away

Our family of 9 spent 10 fun days in this spacious, clean, and comfortable home. It is in an ideal location, so that we were able to walk or take the Island Explorer to most attractions, museums, restaurants and trail heads. On the one rainy day, there were plenty of games, books and puzzles on the shelves to keep us entertained. The beds were comfortable. The kitchen was well appointed. The air conditioning kept us cool. The laundry room was convenient. We enjoyed barbecuing on the patio. It was a wonderful stay!

Perfect!

This house could not have been more perfect for 9 high school friends celebrating our 60th birthdays! It is beautiful and spacious and had everything that we could possibly need. We appreciated the pantry essentials and LOVED the porch where we spent all our free time. The location is perfect - on a quiet street, but easy walking distance to everything the town has to offer. Kay and Augustine were very responsive. We could not imagine a better choice for our Bar Harbor stay!

A Nice Property In A Great Location

Communication was stellar. The property is as I expected. We appreciated that we were close to the downtown area. The only disadvantage was the people in the house to our right. They were screaming and cussing for quite a while. This was disappointing with small children who could hear.

Eclectic Yet Vintage

Great location to downtown and also Acadia. The house itself was a perfect size for the 8 of us. It was nice having the TV room out of the mainstream so it wouldn't wake anyone up. Likewise, the parlor was perfect for us all getting together to determine the course of our day/night. The nice large porch was perfect to sit outside for some family time. The floors/rugs could have used a deep cleaning but everything else was really clean. Comfortable towels and bedding which is always a plus in my book. Kay was very responsive when we were asking questions about the house. Would definitely stay here again.

Center for a Wonderful Family Reunion

Our group consisted of 8 adults and a 2 year old who gathered for a memorial service for Grandma. The house was a perfect place for us to gather. It was very spacious with wonderful spaces that we could sit around and chat and enjoy a glass of wine. The bedrooms were as advertised and there were 4 full baths. Everything we needed was in the house. We were very comfortable there. Since this is a very old house, there was almost no overhead lighting, just table lamps. Putting on makeup in the bathroom was a bit of a challenge due to the lighting. The house was right in downtown Bar Harbor and it was a short walk to the main road, shops and restaurants. We were lucky enough to see the Bar Harbor Bed Races on the Saturday of our stay. Of course, the entrance to Acadia National Park was a short drive away. The owners provided us with plenty of information before we arrived and promptly answered a couple of questions that we had. The binder of info that was in the house was very helpful. This was a lovely home and I would recommend it as a great place to stay.

Our family vacation at Kay and Augusto's lovely home was just perfect. We give it 5 stars.

When I first rented our VRBO home, I was not sure of what to expect. The gallery pictures were nice but yet I was not sure. Sometimes these photos can tend to make the home look better than it actually is. So needless to say, I was so delightfully surprised when we entered that spacious foyer of Augusto and Kay's charming home. From the lovely porch with its wicker furniture and rocking chairs to the bedroom on the third level, the house fit our needs for 11 adults and was more than I expected. The rooms were large with high ceilings and their was plenty of space to spread out. We enjoyed breakfast in the bright breakfast room and dinners around the large parson table in the dinning room. We particularly appreciated a well stocked kitchen and the grill outside since most of our meals were prepared and enjoyed in the house. My grandchildren, ages 14 to 21, were impressed with the uniqueness of an older house with its design and character. Augusto and Kay have truly created a welcoming home away from home. Another plus feature of the home was the location. We were all happy to be so close to the park, attractions, restaurants, and shopping all within walking distance. Using the bus to go to and from the park was an added pleasure. Kay and Augusto had provided excellent instructions to familiarized us with the home and any needs we may have during our stay. We also enjoyed reading about their family and their home. Our week in Bar Harbor was most enjoyable. Our family created memories hiking, biking, kayaking, watching the sunrise on Cadillac Mountain, being together, and so much more. Thank you Augusto and Kay and VRBO for a delightful and memorable vacation. Maria Poppe and family

Excellent place for family vacation

We rented Kay and Augusto's historic home for our recent family vacation. Kay met us at the property and showed us around the house. She was absolutely delightful to meet. We had 10 family members stay for the week, and the home had more than enough room for us to be comfortable. Everyone had plenty of space to stretch out. One of our family members loves to cook, and found everything he needed in the kitchen. The most important feature may have been the coffee pot and the Keurig, both of which got lots of use! The house is situated in a great location in Bar Harbor, You are within walking distance of many eateries, bars, shopping, and the waterfront. Also, the Hannaford's grocery store is only a couple of blocks away, which makes stocking the kitchen easy. Each bedroom had sufficient linens and there were plenty of towels for each of the four bathrooms. The washer and dryer on the third floor made laundry a breeze. The one feature of the house that we absolutely loved was the outdoor space. The courtyard is a fabulous place to hang out, eat, have drinks, etc. We ate most of our dinners in the courtyard. One warning: Bar Harbor's noise ordinance states no loud outdoor activity after 9pm. We were a bit boisterous one evening, and a neighbor kindly informed us about the ordinance, so we made sure to be quiet after 9pm! One other item to note: the house does not have air conditioning. Naturally, this is not an issue for the vast majority of the year. We happened to arrive during a hot spell, with temperatures in the high 80's for a couple of days. While there are fans in every bedroom, it remained warm at night. Fortunately for us it cooled down and was beautiful after the first few days, so no A/C was not a big deal, it is just a head's up if you are traveling at a time where it may be hot and you have people who struggle with heat in your party. Another great feature was the access to Acadia National Park and the free Island bus system. We did a lot of hiking in the park, and members in the group who wanted to go to other locations on the island used the bus with great success. One other note: for those who need WiFi access, it works really well. We had a large number of devices connected with no issues. I would recommend Kay and Augusto's for any family on a getaway. The house is well appointed with everything you need, and comfortable for large groups. It certainly made our stay in Bar Harbor better!

About the host

Hosted by Kay and Augusto

Host profile image
We are a couple with four children who have enjoyed living in Bar Harbor since 1995. We are both architects and have lovingly restored this gem of a home to its glory while incorporating modern amenities and our own touches. We own several other Bar Harbor properties as well -Emerson House, Mason House and the Cottage on Cottage - and enjoy traveling (we always rent homes when we travel and enjoy being able to provide similar comfort to other travelers!)

Why they chose this property

We purchased this home because having had few owners before us, it had retained most of its original features and charm, and as architects, we knew good bones when we saw them! Since then, the home has been totally renovated, and serves as an excellent design laboratory - even our most discerning clients have appreciated the hospitality and ambiance of this home!

What makes this property unique

The butler pantry (the reason we fell in love with the house!) fireplaces, the wooden fretwork, the massive entry columns, oversized front door, the diamond paned windows...they just don't make them like this anymore! Elegant, but livable and oh, so well located!
