The Best Place to Stay in Aspen, CO. Period!

When our family goes back to Aspen, we will stay no where else but at the Heirloom Residence. Magical, A Winter Wonderland, or perhaps a scene from your favorite Christmas Movie, whichever you wish to call it, this residence is by far one of the best we have ever stayed in. Our first time to Aspen as a family did not disappoint and was largely due to the family heirloom we stayed in. Let’s talk about the view…at a vantage point on the other side of Aspen Mountain, this home offer the BEST view in Aspen with wide views of the city below that illuminates in the evening with the city lights in downtown Aspen. In the morning the mountain view is equally as breathtaking with the hues of blue behind the mountains as the day begins. To the left a magnificent view of the adjacent mountain next to the residence. In the distance, you have a clear view of Aspen Mountain and the people skiing downhill. The view alone makes this place worth staying in but lets talk about the lodge. They call it an heirloom as it is a family residence that has seen generations celebrate it and now offer to people looking for a great stay in Aspen. You will find throughout the house multiple figures, posters and artifacts that will make you smile, laugh and also leave you in awe as to the artwork and design deco residing in this home. From the wolf range stove to the hot tub in the master bedroom and the wood floors, this place has a warm feel that makes you feel at home the moment you walk in. The high ceilings and the native stone used in building the house on the interior give the place a very natural feel combined with the aged wood finishing on the inside walls. The master shower was also decorated with natural aged stone and offered three shower heads to help wind down after a day on the slopes.
Words cannot describe the nostalgia or the gestalt of artistry in design and decoration in this home. Every room has something interesting and unique to offer in terms of design and creativity. Alongside the wood burning fireplace is a comfortable living room set where my family and I spent time talking and laughing and even more importantly, enjoying the atmosphere unplugged. The lighting system in the house adds additional ambiance to the home making it especially cozy in the evening. If you like TV, the space had a great cable package as if we were in you your own room along with wi-fi for the kids. The kitchen had every item you could ask for to cook at home along w

Wonderfully close to Aspen but still in the country on the mountain!

A few things needed refreshing - but the manager took care of things quickly - including putting in a new refrigerator! Walking on the mountain was great! Easy drive to town. And inexpensive by comparison to other offerings nearby...

Great house / Great location / Great owner

My wife and I stayed in the Aspen during early August 2020. The house is located is a spectacular location. Great view of Aspen and the surrounding mountains. The house itself is full of interesting Native American, Mexican folk art and a bit of African art, so we kept finding new and interesting things to see in the house. Most importantly, the owner was incredibly responsive and helpful, which is always key to a great stay.

House with a VIEW, great location

Spacious house, very personal and special decor, comfortable rooms, fully equipped kitchen. Most breathtaking - the views from the house. We stayed over the New Years week, enjoyed watching Aspen fireworks from the living room while sitting warm at the fireplace. In winter 4x4 is a must.

Awe-inspiring views and unique home

This is an amazing home with so much character and unbelievable views of Aspen. Sally was a pleasure to work with and she responded quickly to all my questions. I stayed three months in this wonderful home and I should’ve never left! Sitting in the living room at night and watching the snowcats silently grooming Aspen mountain, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk mountain in the distance was beyond peaceful. The indoor jacuzzi was a great asset to the house as well, especially after long days skiing the mountains. If you love to cook the kitchen is perfectly setup for a chef and is completely stocked with all the accessories you’ll ever need! The trip into Aspen was no more than 5-10 minutes. If you’re staying during the winter months just be sure you have a vehicle capable of taking on the mountain roads, which can involve heavy periods of snowfall and icy conditions. The roads up to the house are well taken care of and plowed every morning but just be sure to drive cautiously! Hunter Creek trail is a two minute walk from the house that leads up to even more trails and open air spaces. If you're searching for a cozy, modest and laid-back vacation rental property, then this property is for you. I'll definitely be staying at Sally’s wonderful abode when I visit Aspen again!

Great Comfortable House on Red Mountain

Great house way up on Red Mountain, very comfortably furnished (i.e., actually livable) with a real cook's kitchen. Fantastic views of Aspen Mountain, Maroon Bells and way more. Hunter Creek trail head is walking distance from the house, leads up to even more trails and open air spaces. Great yard for the dogs, one of the few Aspen rentals that allow dogs. We've stayed here 2 summers and will be back!

Epitome of Aspen

Sally's Aspen abode could not have satisfied or impressed me more; the view, the serenity, the stone fireplace. The house was designed with the collective in mind. The huge main room with vaulted ceiling and duel stone chimneys (one for the indoor grill no less) create an atmosphere of community. If I'm lucky enough to visit the town again this will be my first reservation, wouldn't have it any other way. Communication was seamless leading up to and throughout our stay. My only hope is that none of you book this place before me whenever I get the chance to come back.

Great Property - Secluded yet accessible to everything

We were looking to get away from the Dallas summer heat and relax in a secluded mountain setting. We found everything we were looking for, and much more, in this property. If you're looking for a comfortable, unpretentious, casual vacation rental property, that feels like a place you might have built for yourself, then this is the place for you. When we first walked in, we went straight to the deck and took in the view, not to mention the sound of the water rushing down the river just a few hundred yards from the house. Our, almost daily routine, was hiking down Hunter Creek Trail, ( 2 minutes from the front door), through a well marked series of trails, all the way to downtown, where we would meet up for lunch with others in our party, then would drive the 7 or 8 minutes back to the house. Then either go fly fishing, white water rafting, golfing........or just driving up to the Maroon Bells, looking for Moose, Bear, Elk, Deer, Fox, etc. We actually had a fox that hung out around the house that we would run into from time to time, as well as deer in the yard and an occasional bald eagle soaring overhead. Even though the house was fairly close to other houses, we still felt very secluded with the dense foliage surrounding the house. The house was very comfortable for the 4 of us, my wife and I in one room, and our son and daughter, each with their own rooms with separate bathrooms. The kitchen is well equipped, however we tend to eat out a lot. If we decide to visit Aspen again, we would definitely like to stay here. The owner was very responsive and helpful. I would recommend to anyone.

Great Place to Stay in Aspen

We came to Aspen just in time to catch the aspen trees turning gold. It was a magic time to be there. There is nothing like the golden aspens when they turn - they reflect the sun as though they are on fire. This house is a quick drive up the mountain from downtown Aspen. It affords wonderful views of the ski resorts and is a close drive to all Aspen has to offer. We used this house as our base to road trip throughout western Colorado and what a treat that was. It is hard going on many of the roads in the rural areas nearby and it was great to get back to this house after a long drive. We would take a dip in the hot tub in the master suite and then cook up dinner in the wonderful gourmet kitchen. The house has everything you could need and Sally the owner was accommodating, responsive and easy to work with. We highly recommend this house for families looking for a quiet luxury retreat. We hope to be back soon.

Lipman family

My husband and I and our lab were fortunate enough to find this gem! The views of the mountain are unobstructed. There are fabulous walks from the house, including many of Aspen's best hikes. Hunter Creek Trail was out favorite and we walked it many times. It is not possible to capture the scope and beauty of this home and its location by photographs. You will not be disappointed. The property inside and out was immaculate. The outdoor gardens were beautifully maintained. I have and will recommend this property to friends and family.

Excellent house/owner

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights. The views are amazing and the house is beautiful/comfortable. It is a 6 minute drive to the restaurants and a 2 minute walk to hunter creek trail. There is cable and the wifi is fast. The indoor hot tub came in handy after our long hikes. The owner was a pleasure to work with and she responded quickly to all my questions. I have rented houses in the USA/Internationally and this experience was the best. Highly recommended!

Wonderful & unique home with a fabulous view

This home was a perfect spot for my wife and I to relax for a week and to use as a base from which we could hike and bike in the Aspen area. You will never find a home decorated with more unique, interesting and colorful objects of art and whimsy. A very comfortable place. The home is about 800 vertical feet above Aspen and we never tired of the view of the town, the ski mountains and beyond. Of course, the area has many great hiking trails to peaks, lakes, waterfalls and ghost towns, and the Rio Grande Trail is a very long and wonderful biking and/or running resource. And the jacuzzi is great for those sore muscles. The drive to town is less than five minutes and the restaurant choices are very wide and interesting. We definitely plan to come back to this home, either with another couple or with our grown children.

About the host

Hosted by Sally

Host profile image
Hi, my name is Sally. My family has been coming to Aspen since the mid-1950's, before Aspen was 'Aspen.' My mom and dad fell in love with the mountains, the skiing and the Aspen lifestyle. In the 1950’s they owed a folk music nightclub in town called The Limelight. The house was purchased from the builder in 1978 and has been our family's “get away from it all” place. My mom and step-dad were world travelers and the house is decorated with folk art, rugs and photographs from their travels including Tibet, Africa, Bhutan, Mexico and South America, as well as plenty of Southwestern and native American art, pottery and rugs. My husband, kids and I don't spend as much time there as we would like and have decided to open our home so other people can come and enjoy the truly spectacular views and experience the release of stress that our warm home away from home has to offer.

Why they chose this property

There is no other place on earth like Aspen; from the skiing and vast array of outdoor sports and pursuits, to the physical splendor of the terrain, to the fantastic shopping, cultural activities and world class restaurants. Aspen offers: Four big mountains to ski and snowboard to suit every experience level, terrain preference and style; easy access to wilderness areas; hiking; fly fishing; golfing; tennis; ice skating; road and mountain biking; river rafting; kayaking; para-sailing; horseback riding; outstanding symphony concerts daily in the summer season at the Music Tent; lectures, films, concerts and cultural programs at The Aspen Institute and Wheeler Opera House; the X Games; live music of major, nationally known acts at The Belly Up; World Cup ski racing; spas; a skateboarding park; the Snowmass Rodeo; Gondola rides to the top of Aspen Mountain; jeeping; film, music, food and comedy festivals; beautiful pedestrian-only public spaces and parks, and scenic Victorian architecture.

What makes this property unique

The views from Red Mountain are the best in Aspen! We have a 180+ degree unobstructed views of the Aspen Valley from Independence Pass to Aspen Mountain to the Maroon Bells to Mount Sopris. It is a short walk from the house front door to access the Hunter Creek Trail, a beautiful hike up a mountain stream to a large open meadow and late 1800's ghost town or follow the trail down to town. The house is located in the quiet, uncongested Red Mountain Ranch, a neighborhood of attractive private homes, estates and a big central meadow with horses in the summer and reindeer in the winter. Wildflowers, birds, chipmunks and butterflies abound in the summer. You can frequently spot deer, elk, foxes and other wildlife at dusk. This house offers the unique opportunity to be close enough to enjoy the amenities of the town of Aspen but at the same time feel like you're really getting away from it all.
