About this property

Historic Stone "Chalet Switz" under a mile from center of Little Switzerland

Stay in your own little haven -- a stone chalet that was once the Kilmichael Tower. This one bedroom chalet, with impressive two-foot thick stone walls and 23-foot cathedral ceiling, harks back to the days when the Kilmichaels left their mark in history on the Isle of Arran. Chalet Switz today offers Blue Ridge mountain ecology, imaginative architectural design and the perfect setting for a memorable getaway.

Located on the very top of 4000-foot Grassy Mountain, the Chalet is a 30-minute (1.5 mile) looping walk to the Switzerland Inn, which is centered in a historic 100-year old town with quaint shops, homes of extraordinary character and highly reviewed fine and casual dining. Unlike many residences in Little Switzerland, Chalet Switz gets no traffic noise from the Parkway or other paved roads since it is located on the very top of the mountain. As you walk down a country road to the village you will enjoy breathtaking views and the countryside filled with wildlife and natural forest, passing a few residences on the way as you descend 800 feet.

Chalet Switz is made of natural materials with the finest of craftsmanship. Cozy nooks include the kitchen and the inglenook with a wood-burning stone fireplace. In contrast, the airy loft above with its 13' cathedral ceiling offers spectacular views of the extra-dark night sky right from your bed! Amenities for your comfort include down pillows and Ralph Lauren linens. The 4' long deep Kohler Greek tub with hand-held shower offers a view of a giant tulip tree set against the sky and is the only bathing. The commode is enclosed and has an operable Pella window that matches the other three in the loft plus additional natural light streams through the gable glass. The kitchen is equipped with refrigerator-freezer, stove/oven, coffee maker, toaster and distinctive dinnerware. There is no air conditioning; exceptional insulation, two moveable Hunter fans and the natural movement of air on the mountaintop provide temperature control and ventilation. A pleasant yard with outdoor furnishings surround the chalet. Many guests report the enjoyment of dining outdoors and relaxing on chaise lounges. Feel free to roam the several acre mowed Commons area too, just across the trail road north of the chalet and maintained by our homeowners association.

Between 5 and 24 miles away along the Blue Ridge Parkway is spectacular hiking at Linville Falls, Crabtree Falls, Craggy Gardens and Mt. Mitchell. The Gallery and Visitor Center of the Penland School of Craft is less than 15 miles away, the crucible for the dozens of pottery, glass, wood, iron and other fine craft studios and shops in the area.

A 50-mile drive on the scenic, forested Blue Ridge Parkway takes you past the Black Mountains with 6 of the highest 10 peaks -- including Mt. Mitchell, the highest mountain -- east of the Mississippi to the city of Asheville and the Biltmore.

In the winter, when 'the season' has ended and most village shops and the Switzerland Inn have closed, there is peaceful quiet and endless views. You can lie in bed or bath and listen to the wind roar in the trees -- or sit in front of a fire in the cave-quiet inglenook. The super-insulated home with silent, dry electric heat combined with warmth emanating from the 23' tall rock chimney is truly a haven.

If you're wanting to explore: Heading out under the stone Blue Ridge Parkway bridge you can reach the Emerald Mine and -- in less than
15 miles -- the Penland Museum and Visitors Center with some of America’s best fine craft studios established in the area -- ask for a map there but first visit their website and Blue Ridge Heritage Craft Trails and Toe River Arts Council websites.

Alternatively, scenic Parkway drives take you to wild Crabtree Falls and meadows in just 5 miles, Mt. Mitchell 18 miles beyond, Craggy Gardens, the Altapass Orchard,  Linville Falls and Gorge, two large national park visitors centers and stores -- with countless overlooks along the way.

Other places of interest within 50 miles are the Bare Dark Sky Observatory, the town of Linville with historic structures sided in chestnut bark,  Burnsville,  Black Mountain, Asheville, and The Biltmore Estate and village.

Closest to Little Switzerland is Spruce Pine. With the convenience of a WalMart and McDonald's on the way, its downtown is less than a 10 mile drive past the state minerals museum, gem mining and a golf course with restaurant. Named by Family Circle as Main Street, USA a few years back and known for its fine residents, Spruce Pine offers steps back in history walking the footbridge across the RR tracks and Toe River,  and stopping by the Bark House and DT's Blue Ridge Java across from the old train station. Explore its history, layout and restaurants first online to get ready for the real thing.

Great
I loved staying in this historic place. I loved the stone on the outside and inside. It was the perfect place for our trip. I was worried about there not being any ac, since temps were in the low 80s, but with the fans and windows opened for a nice breeze, the house remained comfortable.I enjoued having coffee on the couch, reading and enjoying looking outside. It was very cozy. Bettie was very fast with communicating, and there were no problems with checking in/out. I definitely recommend the place if you want a quiet getaway.

Romantic solitude (inside, at least)
Driving to this house felt like really getting away, which we needed to feel for our anniversary weekend. But conveniently, it was just over an hour from our own home. We were close to the lovely Little Switzerland (3-4 minutes), an entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway (5 minutes), Emerald Village (10 minutes), a Walmart and a variety of restaurants (12-15 minutes). So though we felt "away" we had quick access to all the conveniences we wanted. Staying inside the chalet feels like you're a million miles from everything, and it's a beautiful, historic getaway. The stone walls and wooden interior are beautiful, and though the building looks old (which is what we were going for!) the facilities feel up to date and comfortable. Check in and check out were smooth, and we always had quick communication from the host, including travel tips. The fire started right up with the provided wood (at a nominal extra cost for the caretaker). Stepping outside the home one immediately notices that the owner's house is just across the lawn, so it's not completely isolated and private, but you're outside! At a VRBO! What did you expect? The building has a 2/3 lengt, 2-foot deep tub at the foot of the bed for bathing, and with the shower hose attachment, one can certainly stand up if desired, but we worried we would get the carpet wet with no curtain. So if you must have a shower instead of a bath, this may not be your ideal location. However, it worked great for us, and we can't wait to come back!

A Anniversary Getaway
The Historical Stone Chalet in Little Switzerland was a wonderful getaway for us to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary! The fireplace was so cozy during our short stay. It was also nice to have the kitchen to prepare meals. Although the most of the businesses in the town of Little Switzerland had closed for the late Fall season, Spruce Pines was a wonderful little town that we enjoyed visiting. We enjoyed eating at one of their local restaurants and of course the coffee shop. We hope to plan a future stay at this Chalet!!! Loved our stay!!! A special thank-you to all those who made our stay a memorable one!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Beautiful Views
We enjoyed our quiet peaceful stay. On the clear nights the star gazing was wonderful and on the one overcast morning we enjoyed the most spectacular sunrise. The fires in the evenings were super cozy. Be aware the mattress is very firm. Thank you for a most enchanting stay Bettie and thanks to Steve for making sure the chalet was inviting to enter and for providing quick responses to our questions.

Wonderful!
It was very cozy, quaint, and secluded. The kitchen is stocked with kitchen supplies so we didn't have to go out every day and was able to make some meals in the chalet and just enjoy our time away. If you have a bad back like we do, I suggest bringing some extra cushioning for the bed. Other than that, we loved it and are definitely planning on visiting Little Switzerland/Spruce Pine again!

Charming with Solitude
A short drive from MP 334 on the BRP. This sweet 'tiny house'-like chalet is charming, a 1 mile road takes you to the top of a mountain, The Switzerland Cafe is at the base of this road and it was great (only open Thur - Sun 11-4). We were glad we brought breakfast and dinner items with us since we didn't want to travel too far after getting back from hiking. The chalet was a great retreat and very close to Crabtree Falls. Downstairs is dark (and cozy) so bring a reading light if you want to sit and read in front of the beautiful fireplace or at the table. Outside seating was covered in lichen so we didn't use it. Large windows let you see sky and stars!

A cool adventure filled place , just not the real comfortable
This place is so unique. I mean almost of the charts unique. It’s the base of an almost 100 year old lookout tower that has been converted into a cabin. The owner was great to communicate with. Drawbacks is that it’s just not real comfortable and is very small. The bathroom is just weird. The property outside is lacking in several ways also. So if you are up for an adventure and a unique place you’ll like this place, but if you craze comfortable and nice furnishings then I would avoid it.

Absolutely a Wonderful Experience
The Chalet Switz offered one of the most pleasant and peaceful accommodations that my wife and I have ever experienced. November Mountain Retreat
We had a lovely weekend stay here in mid November. This little home is adorable, quirky, and rustic. The stone is a work of art and we loved the fireplace. Everything was clean and cozy. We do wish the home had a softer mattress and a toilet with a stronger flush. The owner is an excellent host and the caretaker responds quickly. Most businesses were closed, including the restaurant at the Little Switzerland Inn. The nearby bookstore was an unexpected gem with a coffee shop inside. We went to Spruce Pine for dining and found great options there.

The day in 1983 during an idyllic vacation hike that I happened upon the dear stone building I later learned was actually the historic Kilmichael Tower, I decided to turn it into a residence although I resided 600 miles away in Winter Park, Florida and worked full time as a linguistics professor at the University of Central Florida. Over the years, having kindred spirits stay in the historic old tower who enjoy its vibes and all the area offers has given me great joy. In addition to overseeing my vacation rental, my interests include academic studies of intercultural communication as well as the rest of the field of linguistics; designing transportation systems that attract 20% and more of all trips by bicycle and other forms of micro-transport, having done consulting for the seemingly deaf METROPLAN ORLANDO and biked and interviewed the top cycle planners in three northern Europe countries; character photography portraiture and wildlife photography; forest gardening and permaculture; saltwater swimming, fishing, snorkeling, shrimping and lobstering; dance; food; and the wisdom of the Enneagram. I am quick to respond to inquiries, and Steve -- the caretaker, a lifelong resident in the area and the long time head chef at the nearby Wild Acres Retreat Center-- responds quickly to texts or calls.

Why they chose this property

Surrounded by wild nature, Grassy Mountain offers the opportunity to be among deer, rabbits, wild turkey, fox, huge owls and other birds, butterflies (including the recently sparse annual monarch butterfly migration), apple trees, wild berry bushes, and forested hillsides of blooming native plants. Pristine forests, meadows and distinctive homes with lovely gardens and natural landscaping are right there in the village within walking distance. The Switzerland Inn offers breakfast-through-dinner fireside dining with a lively bar, a grand flagstone lobby with a massive fireplace and historic photographs on display and views south into the valley plus a stone patio with bar drinks and dining and some fire pits beyond glowing at night. The village of Little Switzerland is informal, energetic and blessedly free of pretense and commercialism. The surrounding area is internationally renowned for both its welcoming fine craft artist studios and rustic arts. In the area, folks play mountain music, clog and square dance, work iron and wood, make cane chairs, and engage in other traditional activities visitors may enjoy.

What makes this property unique

Location, location, location right in the village of Little Switzerland -- surrounded by nature, in a historic building on a mountaintop, and near the Blue Ridge Parkway. A fun vacation getaway tailored to one or two persons in a spacious residential mountain neighborhood with nature still intact. The romance of interior stone walls and holiday architecture and furnishings. Unrivaled views of the firmament in a designated Dark Sky area. A delightful stroll downhill in an ever-changing landscape to the village center. Perfectly located for scenic drives to Mt. Mitchell, Crabtree Meadows and Falls, Linville Falls, Penland and America’s best fine craft studios, and the always fascinating Asheville.
