About this property

Chandler House: Quintessential Vermont

Chandler House provides an ideal retreat for families and friends looking to experience the quintessential Vermont experience. The house is set up as your own 'Private Inn,' featuring four bedrooms and four and one half baths in addition new country kitchen and dining space, as well as a comfortable living room.

The house is located in postcard-perfect Craftsbury Common, one of the Northeast Kingdom's most photographed villages. The town served, for example, as Alfred Hitchcock's stage set for 'The Trouble with Harry.' Chandler House, in fact, makes several appearances in the film, including the moment when 'Hitch' makes his signature, on-screen cameo.

The Town, founded in 1789, sits atop a plateau surrounded by forest and farmland. Federalist architecture, white clapboard, and the classic church steeple encircle the ideal village green. The town is additionally home to Sterling College, a celebrated four-year institution specializing in environmental education. The Common itself is a hive of activity, farmers markets, summer concerts, soccer camps and town parades. Local artisans abound. Craftsbury Common is sleepy and sophisticated at the same time.

Craftsbury's sits as the southwest gateway to Vermont's Northeast Kindom, an area noted for its abundant wildlife and breathtaking scenery. Warm days and cool nights characterize the area’s summer season. Fall foliage is spectacular throughout the region, and is considered the best in the State. During the wintertime and located within a snow belt, Craftsbury's visuals are those of a Robert Frost poem. Native photographer, John M. Miller, captured the land and its people in his work, whereas the writer, Howard Frank Mosher, has underscored the unique essence of the area in his famous novels 'The Fall of the Year' and 'Where the River Runs North'

Outdoor activities abound in Craftsbury and the region. Hiking, mountain biking, swimming, golf and downhill skiing are all close-by. Adjacent Greensboro is home to Caspian Lake, which is surrounded by summer cottages and estates. The hiking and biking trails around fjord-like Lake Willoughby are spectacular.

The Craftsbury Outdoor Center encompasses two smaller lakes in the area, Great and Little Hosmer. The Center offers sculling camps in the summer and some of the most extensive and best-regarded cross-country trail systems in the State. The annual Winter Marathon attracts upwards of 1500 athletes each January who compete and take in the area’s well known hospitality. According to one participant, the terrain has '...a delightful mix of vistas –snow laden balsam firs, silver-gray or red barns, expanses of farm fields, frozen lakes and beaver ponds, white birches against sometimes blue skies, and small beech trees still clinging to their dry golden leaves.”

PLEASE NOTE: The Village of Craftsbury Common is experiencing a problem with their water supply resulting in a “don’t drink the water” mandate due to elevated levels of P

quintessential northern New England
House, location, photos - all exactly as described. The property manager is very professional and the whole thing is truly no fuss and no invasion of your privacy while you are there. We went that far north with the hope that there would be snow to go cross country skiing at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center and we were not disappointed despite rain washing out so many areas further south. I do think the owner could have a little more information at the property about where to shop for food (with some descriptions), what places there are to eat out. We had planned to go to Blackbird Bistro on Sunday evening and lucky for us we changed our minds and cooked - turned out it was closed despite no information about this on their website or their answering machine (other than saying that they are open Sundays!). Would have been a nasty surprise if we had been counting on it because it's a considerable drive for other restaurants. Knowing that kind of thing and sharing it with renters would be really helpful.

Classic Vermont experience
We loved spending our holiday here, being able to extend an extra room and private bath for family when they visited for a night and xc skiing with them at Craftsbury. The green was great for a nightly walk to see the stars, the general store amazing at making our cooking easy and inventive every day, and the 20-minute proximity to hill farmstead brewery (voted the best microbrewery in the world) an unexpected surprise. We loved every minute. Great space to relax, cook, play games on the big kitchen table, and go on local adventures. The local manager was very accessible for questions! Thanks, John, for sharing the home with us!

Best VRBO Ever
This place is simply amazing! This was our third stay at Chandler House. You will not find a cleaner, more well-appointed home anywhere. It’s location (right in the Craftsbury Common ) is quintessential Vermont. In warmer weather, enjoy sitting in the Adirondack chairs in the front yard, where you can watch the local school kids playing soccer or frisbee, or perhaps some Sterling College students out walking draft horses. The Chandler House and Craftsbury are places for both adventure and relaxation. That being said, the house isn’t for everyone. There is no TV. While this may be a deal-breaker for some, it’s what makes Chandler House so special. We can’t wait to come back!

Our stay
The property was well described and beautiful. Just a couple minor inconveniences in that I couldn't find the soap for the dishwasher, and I had very poor cell service. Otherwise, our stay was wonderful. The bedrooms were comfortable and cozy. Recommended for sure!

Beautiful home on Craftsbury Common
The Chandler House could not have been more attractively decorated, cleaner, or better equipped. The location, right on the Common, was very pleasant, and being within sight of the town museum, the church, and the delightful library was a plus.

Lovely Home!
We recently enjoyed our second stay at the Chandler House in Craftsbury and it was truly delightful. Chandler House is exceptionally well maintained, exceptionally clean, well stocked with essentials, and exceptionally comfortable for a small group of people with ensuite bathrooms for every bedroom. Super relaxing and comfortable location to enjoy all that Craftsbury has to offer!

Great location for xcountry skiing!
We totally enjoyed our stay at this lovely house. We were able to ski right from the back door, across the Commons to a side street where we picked up the Craftsbury Common Trail. The drive to the COC was 6 minutes so it was easy to return for lunch on the days we drove to the center. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed to cook our meals. We will return again!

Great house for our family of 5
We rented this house for 5 nights with our three children (10,12,15). We all had our own comfortable room and bathroom, and the common areas were perfect for spending time together. The location is nice- very pretty and peaceful, close to two well stocked general stores, and close to the Craftsbury outdoor center. The check-in/check-out procedures were very simple and straightforward. We’ll definitely stay here again on our next visit!

Winter Retreat
This was one of the easiest and stress-free bookings I have experienced! John the property owner was very gracious and prompt with any responses. Our family absolutely loved the traditional New England home and neighborhood for our Christmas vacation! Perfect for day trips to Stowe as well as other great things to do in nearby towns. We hope (and plan) to stay here sometime in the future!

Beautiful, Peaceful Rental
I stayed in this lovely, nicely appointed house with my husband and three children in July 2021. The pictures don't do this rental justice. It's spacious, light, clean, and nestled in the quiet little common. Check-in was seamless and the check-out process was easy. My kids loved having their own bathrooms (one in every bedroom!) and I loved the bright, modern kitchen. We enjoyed lounging in the cozy living room together when it rained---the house has multiple board games and books to read, and we enjoyed the grounds and walking nearby paths and around the common when the weather cooperated. The house has a charcoal grill and small patio table and chairs on the gravel patio. A sweet little space to grill and enjoy meals with a view of the nearby mountains. We drove to the Craftsbury general store for sandwiches and supplies and enjoyed visiting the Craftsbury Outdoor Center just 5 to 7 minutes away. I would absolutely recommend this rental property. My family can't wait to return and enjoy Chandler House again next summer!

Awesome!!
When we arrived it was before 6pm. but very dark. It was so nice to see the lights on and to feel the warmth of the house the minute we walked in. There was so much excitement. I have a family of 3 girls. My middle daughter ran up the stairs saying, "I'm going to see which room I want first!" We slept so good. Enjoyed the privilege of being able to sleep in, and then eating breakfast at noon. Just love this place so much. There were plenty of linens, and the kitchen was more than what I expected. Fully stocked with everything you need to eat in as far as dishes, utensils, and cookware. John, thank you so much for allowing us to enjoy your beautiful home.

Wonderful Craftsbury house with all en-suite BR/baths
Our group of long term skiing friends has enjoyed this house on multiple trips. The kitchen works well for group meal cooking, etc, and we socialize in the cozy living room before and after our ski outings. The setting on the common is very pleasant, particularly with holiday lights on in the common square.
