About this property

Secluded Family Cottage on West Arm of Walloon Lake-

Our Family Cottage is located on the west arm of Walloon Lake situated between Petoskey and Boyne City, approximately 45 miles from the Mackinac Bridge. Nestled at the end of Zenith Heights Road on three acres of land amidst scenic mature forests, our property offers a picturesque, relaxing setting. The Family Cottage shares the property with the Guest Cottage. No roads intersect the area between the cottages and the lakefront.

Walloon Lake is one of Michigan’s most beautiful and clean inland lakes. With its distinctive turquoise color it is over ten miles long and has Brown & Lake Trout, Walleye, Northern Pike, Bass, and Perch. The lake bottom is free of weeds and is sandy with a gradual slope from the end of the dock outward.

Our cottages share 200’ of shore front, two swimming rafts and a large, gorgeous dock offering plenty of room for you to enjoy the beautiful sunrises & moor your own boat. At the water’s edge a lounge deck with table and chairs and a small sandy beach area for children awaits you, your family & friends. Each cottage has it's own tandem kayak & camp fire pit to enjoy.

The Family Cottage is set atop a gentle slope approximately 90' from the lake below. This ranch style home can accommodate up to 8 people. Vaulted ceilings and cedar walls give the cottage a wonderful “lake-home” feel. The fully-equipped kitchen lies adjacent to the laundry room (complete with washer, dryer & washtub)dining room, and master bedroom. The living room has 2 leather couches & leather chair, a wood burning fireplace, TV with DVD and floor to ceiling windows looking out to the lake.

A screened in porch lies off of the dining room, looking out to a lake front patio-complete with table & chairs. Gas & charcoal grills help make this a perfect area to enjoy a meal on a summer evening! The Master bedroom has a king bed & ceiling fan, bath with shower and private screened in porch. The other 2 bedrooms have bunk beds with a full bath down the hall. Outside the 2 bedrooms is a den equipped with a trundle bed, piano, stereo/CD player, and board games.

This 1600 square foot cottage is non-smoking with adjustable electric heat available in every room. Blankets, pillows, linens, and bath towels are furnished – please bring your own beach towels. No firearms, fireworks, or additional guests living in campers are allowed to ensure a safe environment for all. A local caretaker is on call and mid-week cleaning is also available for an additional cost.

If you are interested in booking the cottage, please feel free to contact us at the numbers below. In order to secure your date, a signed lease & deposit is required for rental. We welcome clean and respectful guests, and look forward to making your next vacation a Walloon one!

Please email or call with any questions to request more pictures or information.

Walloon Lake

Our family had a wonderful stay at The Family Cottage on Walloon Lake. The place had a great location, private but close to everything with three busy boys! We will definitely be back! Marty the owner was awesome and very responsive!

Charming Walloon

Welcoming mid-century cottage with everything one needs for a comfortable stay. Throughly enjoyed the setting overlooking the lake. Sitting on the patio with a morning cup of coffee was divine as were the times lounging in the Adirondack chairs on the dock. The hosts Marty and Frank could not have been nicer.

Heaven on Walloon

We love staying at Marty's cottage. This was our fourth visit to the cottage and it was as wonderful as always. It is comfortable, clean, well stocked and provides a true Up North experience. The dock is amazing. Kayaks are available. There are multiple dining areas (inside and out). We also really enjoy the fire pits and fireplace. The only downside to the property is that we don't own it!

Beauty, tranquility and comfort.

Cottage was just as described. Very clean, comfortable and tidy. All outdoor areas were beautifully landscaped and great for gatherings and campfires. Had everything you need for a lovely stay on beautiful Walloon lake. Marty ,the owner, was easy to communicate with and available. All went without a hitch.

Beautiful lakefront and campfires

We traveled to this property with two young families. The dock is fabulous and the water was great for our family. We rented a pontoon boat for one day and really enjoyed Walloon Lake. The campfires at night and the woods around you, really make it feel like you have gotten away from it all. Of note, there is no internet. This adds to the feeling of getting away from it all, but just should be noted in case you need to get some work done while you are on vacation. Overall, we highly recommend this property. Thank you to the Moyer's for sharing their property with us.

This place is absolutely gorgeous. From the woods, to the cabin, to the stunning lake. Perfection!

We were able to take our first family vacation on a whim, and ended up finding our way to The Moyers Family Cottage on beautiful Walloon Lake. This place is around 2 hours north of where we live, yet it felt like we were in a completely different world. The Caribbean Blue water is as clean and beautiful as it gets. Truly a little paradise in the woods. The owners were quick to respond and helpful in guiding us on where to rent a boat. We never even had to contact them during our stay. The cottage has a rustic/modern vibe. It was clean and stocked with necessities upon our arrival. It also has a ton of board games and a piano. A TV with a few stations. Having the laundry on site was a huge help. There are a lot of pine needles that get drug in on shoes, but I found that sweeping the floor on vacation is much more enjoyable than sweeping at home. They are soft pine needles too, not the pokey ones. There is plenty of room for a family and they even let us bring our dog, Abbie, who swam and swam until we would literally have to make her stop. There are cottages around the property, but still so much privacy. The dock out front worked well for the Pontoon we rented. We had rainy weather the majority of the week, but we were still able to get some fishing and cruising in. Caught quite a few bluegill in the millpond area north of the cottage. Having the Kayak to use was cool too. We’d never been on one before. The houses around the lake are phenomenal. We came home inspired with ideas to do to our own house and yard. This cottage is pretty much centrally located between Boyne City, Petoskey, and Charlevoix. We were able to check out all three and visit the shops and eat local food. Some of our favorite stops were the Lavender Hill Farm, the farmers market in Boyne City, Kilwins Chocolate Factory, Sturgeon River Pottery, and all the unique little shops. A week didn’t seem long enough and we miss it already. Even though our goal is to go to a different lake for a week each summer, we’ve decided to also make it a tradition to go back to The Moyers Family Cottage once a year too! We loved it THAT much. We left feeling refreshed. Looking forward to next year already!

Family comfort

This was our third time at the Family Cottage. We truly wish it were OUR family cottage. It perfectly captures the magic of Walloon Lake and Northern Michigan. It is clearly well-loved and well-maintained. It has everything a family could possibly need. The dock is fantastic, as are all of the outdoor areas. The house itself is perfect with lots of areas to gather and relax. Marty is a superb hostess. We cannot recommend it enough! Please just don’t take “our” weeks!

Great place to stay.

This is year number 3 for me and each year gets better as I enjoy Walloon Lake and the family cottage. The house has everything I need and the dock provides a nice place to relax and swim. The deck is my place to enjoy reading and other hobbies.

Moyer Family Cottage

I had a wonderful week on Walloon Lake staying in the Moyer Family Cottage. I love the woods as much as I love the lake so this is the perfect place to hide away from the world. Sitting on the deck looking up at trees and the clouds, then seeing the lake and hearing the waves is what I am trying now to remember as I return to work and the city. The cottage had everything I need - great kitchen, deck, big windows - everything on one floor. The dock is spacious and has the best steps to get in and out of the lake. I stayed in the Moyer Guest Cottage last summer and loved it as well.

Beautiful, peaceful place with everything you could want for a great vacation

The Moyers' place is fantastic! We used to own on Walloon, had our own place for 50 years but were forced to sell a few years ago. We rented at our old place for a few years after selling; this was the first year we ever stayed anywhere else, so we were a bit apprehensive going in. However, Marty in the pre-vacation months was absolutely first-rate with communication and in providing description of her place; this led to us feeling very comfortable before arriving. We rented both the Guest and Family cottages. Both were great! Spacious, lots of sleeping accommodations, excellent kitchen and dining areas. There is a lot of room for parking too. Each cottage has an excellent gas grill. It's in a really cool woodsy environment. I felt like we were all back at Summer Camp. A series of well-made steps lead you quite safely down to the lake. A couple fire pits are on the property too on either side of the steps. We used those for evening family get togethers and acoustic guitar sessions from 2 of our family members. The dock is awesome! Plenty of room for people and boats. 2 rafts made for family fun. The water out by the end of the dock is nice and shallow and very rock-free making it perfect for people of all ages to get in and have fun. I can't recommend the Moyers' place highly enough. You can feel secure that Marty will do whatever she can to help you in advance and when you're there. As I said above everything you need for a great vacation can be found at the Moyers place. Many thanks to Marty and her husband for their hospitality and for their fabulous cottages!

Great home!

We had a lovely trip to this home on Walloon, which is great for a family or even two. We had four kids total (8, 5, 4, 3) and three adults, and it was comfortable, clean, easy to get to the lake/campfire areas, and Marty is a great communicator and made things very simple. We can't wait to return.

great family fun

We stayed in the Family Cottage this year and loved it. Lots of room for people to be together or find quiet space to chill out. Kitchen is well stocked, beds are comfortable and views are amazing! Ceiling fans kept the cottage cool. Piano was a nice touch as we had a piano player in our group. Kid friendly place that was very clean and neat. Easy access to the shore, decks and fire pits. The kids (13, 12 & 9) loved the sandbox even though they are a bit old for that. We docked our boat at the cottage so it was super convenient. My favorite time of the day is early morning, kayaking around the lake before everyone wakes up. Overall it was a great trip.

Wonderful Vacation

Our family fully enjoyed our stay at this cottage this summer. We spent hours on the well constructed dock just swimming and relaxing. The day that it did rain we took advantage of the fire pit area and hung out under the trees that gave us protection from the rain. The property is very well maintained and clean. It was a wonderful time. Hope to do it again.

Wonderful stay

We rented both homes for the week of July 4th, 2011. Six adults and 5 kids. The property is beautiful, quiet and private. The houses and grounds are described well, in great shape and well maintained. The owner was wonderful in every way, easy to reach and responsive to all issues. I would highly recommend this rental to all. A lot for kids to do. A lot of areas to relax and for kids to play-- early risers didn't bother late sleepers. Nice to rent, for us it meant families with different schedules because of kids or whatever, weren't in each other's way. Lake front with a lot of area to relax, and well protected from the one windy day we had. Small beach so kids can easily go in and out of lake... nice touch! Great dock. We didn't have a boat but we were on the deck most of the time. Overall, a great vacation for us, and we will likely return.

10 of us enjoyed a week in the guest cottage. It was clean and the kitchen was well stocked. The 2 levels were perfect for our needs - one family on the lower level and 2 more on the upper. Having a tv on both levels was handy--the kids had their late night film festival on the lower level while adults tackled a challenging puzzle on the large kitchen table. We enjoyed our meals out on the deck which was also bug free. We all enjoyed and love Walloon Lake. The new dock had stairs on each side leading to the water. 2 swim rafts were available. The 4 grandchildren besides loving the water also enjoyed playing in the woods. My California based brother-in-law enjoyed hiking and taking in the flora of Northern Michigan. Of course we had to visit Grandpa Shorters in Petoskey and take family photos in Charlevoix. Marty Moyers was most friendly and accommodating. We would definitely return.

Great Cottages, Great Lake, Great Location, Great People!

We spent the week of July 5 at the Moyers' properties--4 nights in the "Guest Cottage" and 3 nights in the "Family Cottage." Both were extremely clean, roomy and comfortable. (If we had to pick one over the other, it would probably be the "Family Cottage", as it's closer to the lake and a little more "cottagey" feeling. However, only one of the three BRs has a queen bed.) Walloon Lake was unbelievably clear, the water temperature was very comfortable, and the dock and rafts were terrific for swimming and sunning. We had a great time grilling one night, although the other nights we took advantage of the many wonderful restaurants in the area. Petoskey was only about 15 minutes away and Charlevoix about 20 minutes away. One of our favorite destinations was the Bay Harbor resort, about a 10 minute drive away with great views of Lake Michigan and a variety of reasonably-priced restaurants. We also enjoyed the Walloon Lake Inn for dinner one night, and we highly recommend Chandler's in Petoskey for lunch or dinner. We did a very enjoyable day trip to Mackinac Island (the ferry's about an hour's drive), and I golfed at one of the many spectacular courses within a half-hour's drive. (I played Little Traverse Bay, which I highly recommend.) On top of everything else, the Moyers' couldn't be warmer or more accommodating people. In short, we couldn't have been happier with our stay, and we definitely plan to return--hopefully for many years to come!

A Great Vacation

Although most owners will only rent for one week during peak season, the owner Marty was very accommodating to our abbreviated four day schedule. Not staying longer turned out to be the only downside to our trip. My mother grew up on Walloon Lake and I have very fond childhood memories of my time there. My first trip back there in many years reinforced my belief that Walloon is a very special place. The water is truly some of the most crystal clear water you will see anywhere and the deep blue - green color is spectacular. The sandy bottom (no mud or murk here) is ideal for swimming. The kids loved it. The summertime water temperature is perfect. We stayed in the family cottage. It's not fancy, but it seems right and appropriate for the overall atmosphere. It's clean and functional and designed for vacation fun. The dock, the fire pit, and the wooden steps down to the lake all add to the appeal. The owner also provides many games in mint condition as well as more gear in the kitchen than one normally finds in a rental house. We went for extremes and rented both a jet ski and a kayak. The kayaking was great for peaceful moments and the jet ski provided the high adrenaline fun. The kayak was delivered to us by Bahnhof Rentals and the jet ski was delivered to the nearby marina, Bear's Cove. We have high praise for Dee Z's rentals for the jet ski - ask for Jeff. He was on time both for pick up and delivery and he was friendly and helpful. The nearby towns, Petoskey and Boyne City are both nice destinations and offer fun walking experiences and a variety of good dining. Pirates Cove mini golf in Petoskey and the butcher shop right next door are great. Harbor Springs is a nice trip also. Overall we had a wonderful vacation that was well worth it and will remain in our memories always. We're already thinking about next summer.

My husband & I live in Colorado & the kids are grown, so we don't get to enjoy the cottage as often as we would like. So, we thought we would share this magical place with others allowing them to make Walloon a tradition & create fond memories that will last a lifetime.

Why they chose this property

My family lived in Ann Arbor, but my sister, mom & I would always spend our summers at my grandmother's cottage in Minnesota. My dad decided to buy the property on Walloon Lake so we could spend more time together. After an exhaustive search of other lakes, we found none could hold a candle to beautiful Walloon. We were all enchanted by the 'Caribbean turquoise blue color of the lake and the big, beautiful Hemlocks, Beech, Maple & Birch trees on the property. The 200' of shoreline & 3 acres gave us lots of room to play, explore & relax. The property initially had 2 small Sears & Roebuck cabins on it-that we later joined & modified to create the guest cottage after we finished building the family cottage.

What makes this property unique

Some of our favorite things to do at the cottage are: watching the sunrise over a quiet, glassy lake; water skiing; swimming; kayaking; tubing; fishing; sailing; exploring the woods & looking for morels; laying on my back looking up through the tree limbs to the tree tops-marveling at their size; curling up with a good book in front of the fire; picking cherries at a nearby orchard; taking a nap on the porch; grilling an evening meal & enjoying it on the patio overlooking the lake; looking for satellites, falling stars & the northern lights on the dock; and our favorite of course...good conversation & drinks around the campfire with friends & family while enjoying s'mores :)
