About this property

Round House, 360 degree deck, on stunning private beach with private cabana

Casuarina Bay is an exceptionally beautiful, secluded hideaway on the island of Eleuthera, in the Bahamas. Just two lovely properties share this very private protected bay on the Atlantic, skirted by miles of pink sand beaches.

The house has spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, amidst a picturesque grove of coconut palms, colorful hibiscus, fragrant frangipani flowers, sea grape, passion fruit, papaya and Casuarina trees.

This beachfront vacation cottage is built of cedar in an open hexagonal design, with a high ceiling and a sleeping loft, ideal for children. Eight arching windows provide magnificent views, and open onto a wrap-around 360 degree deck with outdoor shower. There's a split level A/C unit. On the beach we have a thatched cabana with comfortable lounge chairs.

Perfect for a honeymooning couple or a small family, this rustic Round House is charmingly and comfortably furnished, and has been described as 'the hidden treasure of Eleuthera'.

This is the perfect place for the adventurous traveler and for those who enjoy taking in the exquisite beauty of this magical island.

Snorkel for hours right in front of the house on the pristine coral reefs. Catch your own lobster and feast on them while watching the full moon rise out of the ocean. Awake to the gentle sound of the breeze rustling through the coconut trees.

Ocean-lovers will find some of the best snorkeling, scuba diving, and swimming in the world. Underwater visibility is up to 100 feet, with water temperatures ranging between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Easily accessible, Casuarina Bay is just one hour by air from Fort Lauderdale, and only seven miles from Governors Harbour airport. It is located 1.5 miles northeast of the quaint village of Governors Harbour, one of the oldest settlements in the Bahamas.

Relaxing Five Days
The Round House was just what we were looking for. The property is funky, in a good way! It has AC but we never used it because the ocean breeze kept it nice and comfortable. Doon was amazing as our host and incredibly responsive. We had a great 5 days in paradise.

Rustic getaway with beautiful views
Eleuthera beaches are some of the most beautiful ones we've ever been on. And this house is within walking distance of some awesome ones including the pink sands of the French Leave beach. The house itself was pleasant to stay in with some big fans that kept the air moving. The house is definitely an open-air concept. Even the bathroom doesn't have a door on it. The property does need some maintenance and cleaning. We could not get the oven part of the stove to work, the books (especially the ones upstairs) are filthy and moldy, the one cabana chair is missing a leg, the "sorta private fence" of the outdoor shower is falling down, etc. etc Also, this place is not nearly private as we were expecting. I should have paid more attention to some of the other reviews that mentioned this. There is another house only steps from this one that is also rented out. So just keep in mind that other folks will be there and talking, etc. just outside your front door. The laundry room is in the other house and shared with other guests. The cabana is also mentioned as private, but that only means it's yours to use, but there is another one right next to it, something that of course is not mentioned or shown in the pictures. All in all, if you have the right expectations coming into this place, you'll enjoy staying here. Eleuthra is a beautiful island and we really enjoyed our time here.

Met and exceeded expectations
Unique property with a great backstory. Hostess was pleasant and not intrusive. The beach was steps away, with little to no foot traffic. The ocean and the snorkeling were a bit surreal... like living in a postcard. We spent most of our time in the cabana or in the water, enjoying Kalik and local fare . Doon and her family are activists working in the best interest of the island by educating the youth and speaking out against real estate development that will destroy the reef. That has nothing to do with this review, but it is commendable work and deserves to be noted

Paradise!
Thank you Doon and Taja for an amazing and relaxing week in Eleuthera! We truly enjoyed our vacation. The property was beautiful and secluded. The beach is one of the best we have visited. It was fun to explore the reef. Every day was an adventure. It was so nice to unwind after this past year and a half. You both were so welcoming and thoughtful. We will definitely be back! The island of Eleuthera is truly a beautiful place and so welcoming to visitors. Hope to see you soon!

Awesome place to stay
If you are looking to stay at a new home that's like staying at a resort, this isn't the place for you. If you are ok with charm, solitude, uneven floors, driftwood for door handles, the occasional time when nature finds it's way indoors (some bugs and maybe a frog or two), this is your place. We had a great stay and will be back for sure. It was the escape from normal life we were looking for. The host was very attentive. We had a few issues that needed to be worked out and they were quickly taken care of which isn't always easy on a remote island. Thanks for a great stay.

The location of the Round House was superb! Steps away from the islands finest beaches. Very convenient to Governor's Harbor and a great location for exploring the entire island. This unique house has a wonderful story but you must visit to hear first hand. We especially enjoyed the architecture of the house and the outdoor shower.

Perfect Bahamian Beach House!
My friend and I enjoyed 5 beautiful days at The Round House this July, and we could not have asked for a better trip! This was my 3rd visit to Eleuthera in the last 6 months and the Round House is positioned perfectly along a stretch of isolated pink sand and clear water, only a couple of minutes drive into town and all of our favorite places. From booking to check in and check out, Taja was so helpful and informative. We arrived without any issue to the stunning island charm of the Round House. The feeling you get when you step inside transports you out of everyday life and you instantly feel a sense of peace and island hospitality! It was clean, light and bright with personal family and Bahamian touches throughout. So incredible that this house was built by the owners, they did such an amazing job. We took advantage of the well-equipped kitchen, cooking meals at home, as well as the outdoor shower looking out at the palms and greenery. The beach was private and amazing as usual. We sipped cocktails from the deck, kayaked to French Leave Beach and had wonderful sleep every night that had us up with the sunrise every day. This was hands down my favorite place that I've stayed on the island and I will for sure be back!

Private beach, beautiful location, handbuilt charm
Loved the location down the sand (not dirt!) path and the private beach. The home is great and you can hear the ocean waves from the bed at night. Only issue we had was that the bathroom shower is a bit old and needs to be carefully adjusted. The couches were quite old and not great but certainly usable - especially since it's on a small island I'm sure there are not a ton of ways to get new furniture there. Would definitely return. The homeowners were very responsive and helpful!

Our family of 4 stayed in the round house in February 2019 and absolutely loved it!
We were looking to enjoy a nice relaxing vacation and that is exactly what we got. The island of Eleuthera is a hidden gem. The beaches (which you almost always have to yourself) are absolutely beautiful, the locals are very friendly and the island is safe and so much fun to explore! We really enjoyed getting to know Doon during our stay and the kids loved playing with Bimini (her dog) every day! I highly recommend a vacation to Eleuthera! We can’t wait to go back!

Peaceful Oasis
We really love the rustic charm of the Round House, a hexagonal hand-hewn cottage with a warm ambience you don't find in a typical rental. We had the gorgeous, long beaches almost to ourselves, and when it was windy on this side, we just drive a short distance to a calmer beach on the East side. The owner, Doon, is an absolutely lovely person, who has lived there for many years, and is active in preserving the natural wonders of the sea and land of Eleuthera. This place is a unique treasure!

This is our place!
This is our third year at the Round House and we can't let go.....it is the BEST place to stay in Eleuthera! My fiancé has gone on a kayak (fishing), in front of the home, and has caught blue runners, yellow jacks and yellow tails!!!! How cool is that? Not only that, there is the best snorkeling also in front of the home...less than 10 feet from shore! Don't this twice...this is the place to stay!

Peaceful escape!
This was our second trip to the Round House and it did not disappoint. The house was perfect for the two of us, but could accommodate kids as well, or friends as long as you are ok with an open concept living and sleeping space. The views from the house are great. You can see the ocean from the front, and lush forest in the back. The weather was beautiful and we spent quite a bit of time in the beach cabana, my favorite spot! On a day it was a little windy we went to a Caribbean side beach (Cocodimama), and would also recommend Gaulding Cay on the Caribbean side. We used the kayaks as well. The beach right in front of the house has very little traffic, and the cabana is nicely hidden from the road - despite what other reviews say. We walked up to Twin Coves for snorkeling and fishing, and walked down to French Leave beach as well. Doon was an excellent host, just like last time, and she even brought us a fresh papaya that was growing outside our back window. Doon also gave us a great recommendation to go to Tippy's on Wednesday night for the live music. The food and music were both great. You can walk to Tippy's or it is a short drive. We walked and had a nice moonlit walk back. The location is very close to town, but you would never know it because of how few people you see when you are actually at the house. This house is not a ritzy, super modern, hotel style property so don't come expecting that. It is very homey and well kept. We had everything we needed. The wireless worked fine for our needs - quick checks on the kids back home, etc. This is a place to go to get away from it all and enjoy the beauty of Eleuthera. We highly recommend the Round House!

I would love to go back!
I loved our stay at the Round House. We took our two teenagers (14 and 16), some snorkeling gear, fishing rods and books. The opportunity to share a one room (with loft) round house was exactly what we needed to secure quality family time. The beach in front of our house was stunning and extremely quiet. A short walk to the south is access to French Leave Beach, one of the most beautiful in the world. We ran or walked it every day. Twin Coves to the north provided interesting tide pools and snorkeling opportunities. Governor's Harbour is only a 15 minute walk or a couple of minutes by car. Bikes would be a nice addition to the property for this purpose. Decent food, groceries and coffee in the Harbour. Really enjoyed the Globe Princess movie theater. Super special to stay in a house that was built by the lady next door. Doon is a gem and we enjoyed learning about her family history and life on the property. The Round House was a great place to stay for a more authentic experience in the Bahamas. Outdoor shower was also a personal favorite.

Fun family getaway!
We LOVE the round house! We are a family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids ages 12, 14, 17) and have stayed here two years in a row. There's plenty of room and Doon and Taja go out of their way to make sure we have what we need. We love hearing the waves crash while we sleep with the beach only about 20 steps away. We hardly ever saw another car pass by the house or person on the beach. We love to walk to French Leave or Twin Coves. Two beautiful beaches just a short walk away with barely any people! The rental car was perfect for exploring the island and going out to dinner. If you're the kind of person who likes resorts, pools, waitstaff and pristine conditions this is not the place for you. But if you enjoy fresh coconut in your backyard, a beach to yourself, and an overall feeling of peace, then the round house is your place.

Beach Cabin Lacking Privacy
Summary... If Eleuthera is your destination, avoid the Round House at the listed rates. It’s certainly not the worst place you will stay, but the property write-up and reviews are disconnected from reality. WERE the description accurate concerning the total lack of privacy and rustic condition of the property, AND the rate half the current rate (including the rental car), then my review would be 4 stars. But at the current rate and with another, larger house mere steps away, the Round House can only muster a two-star review. The Round House is a medium-sized beach cabin on the Atlantic side of Eleuthera. While it is unique, it is not luxurious or elegant in any way. It is rustic, right down to the old fixtures, low water pressure and scratched furniture. It reminded me of older ski cabins I've rented in the Adirondacks - minus the beach. If, however, you are seeking even the slightest privacy and/or seclusion, the Round House is a terrible choice. A very large, neighboring house is only 20 feet away. Anyone on the second-floor deck or looking out the north facing bedroom window of this house can look DIRECTLY INSIDE the Round House - including an unobstructed view of your bed through a semicircular window. This window has no covering. So, while you and you partner are on the bed, you are putting on a show for any neighbor interested in watching. There is also no privacy inside of the Round House. The sole interior door only closes off the kitchen from one side of the bathroom (thankfully), but there is no door closing off the bathroom from the other side of the house. This means there is NO TOILET DOOR. That’s right, folks, when on the toilet, there is no door (think summer camp). Same with the shower. While this may be manageable for a close couple, it would be awful for families. The beachfront cabana (75 feet away and across the road) is a great spot to sit, read, snooze, imbibe or do almost anything else as the ocean waves roll in. Regrettably, it is only a few feet from the public road and clearly visible to anyone driving or walking by, which happened many times every day. So, if you are thinking about being “romantic” in your beachfront cabana, think again. In many previous reviews, the cabana has been described as private. What they mean is that the cabana is for your “private use”. It is definitely not private in the sense of being secluded or out-of-sight. Were it allowed, I would have attached photo evidence of everything.

Cozy beach cottage- the perfect getaway!
We lived our stay in the round house! We stayed for 6 days with our three young children. The loft area was perfect for them to sleep and play. Literally steps from a steps from a secluded private beach and a short walk to the pink sands of French Leave beach. Outdoor shower was great for cleaning off after the beach. Property owner Doon was kind and helpful, checking in periodically and making sure we had everything we needed. It was truly the most memorable family vacation !

Taja was a very gracious host. Unfortunately the house is in need of some maintenance.
House keeping issues. A/C needs maintenance ..doesnt work well (I had to clean the filters) floor fan doesn't work and needs to be cleaned. The grill isn't really. The TV didn't work ....most significantly the wifi worked only 10% of the time. It's an older building and while I understand 3rd world issues....the rates were high 1st world. And maintenance should not be a 3rd world issue. It's a matter of attention to detail. All in all... I left before my rental was up. Again....Taja is very nice and accommodating and this review is intended to encourage upgrading the house.

Serene, Private Paradise with Shooting Stars
My husband and I have never taken a trip that was just the two of us, we are always visiting loved ones when we take a trip, as many can relate to. We decided on the Bahamas because neither of us had ever been. After a bad experience in Nassau, I contacted Taja. Lucky for us, theRound House on Eleuthera was available for 3 nights and a guest room in the main house was open for the 4th, which is all we needed. Getting off the plane and driving to the round house, the negative energy and stress we both had been saturated in evaporated off of us in the warm sun and fresh air. Eleuthera is a far less populated Island, the local Bahamians are warm and generous, it is quaint and charming and more our speed. The rental comes with a rental car if you want, that is just waiting there at the airport for when you land. Doon and Taja really think about everything, how to make things convenient and clear. Taking the dirt road to the roundhouse felt like such an adventure. When we pulled up, we could not help but have a grin from ear to ear, I may have squealed and did a ridiculous happy dance when we got out of the car, maybe. For those looking for privacy, charm, and enjoys the discovery of countless little magical details that make this unique Round House so special, this is the place for you. It was clear this place was made with love for the serene surroundings and breathtaking beaches. There are thoughtful and creative details at every turn, obviously as an ode to the land and lifestyle that Doon (Taja’s Mother and resident badass goddess) wanted to cultivate. When we walked to the Cabana and saw the turquoise water, pink sand, hands down one of the most beautiful sights my husband and I have ever seen, pure gratitude. The Round House comes with everything you need, a private cabana, paddle boards, kayaks, two showers, one on the inside and one on the outside. There is a BBQ and Yoga deck. Sleeping on that comfy bed with the sounds of the ocean was perfect. What has not thought of to make it more perfect? With our Rum cocktails in hand, we would spent hours each night in the cabana looking up a million stars. We saw at least 15 shooting stars every night and made many many wishes. One, is that we will hold this special place, the memories, the connection we shared with Doon and the land she calls home, hold it in our hearts forever. The other, is that we will find our way back someday.

Great Location But The Round House Needs Some TLC
We loved our stay & do not regret staying at the Round House BUT several amenities were either not at the Round House (but at the big 3 story house right next door & there was a family staying during the same time.) or did not work. It is an old place and needs some work, the ac was not adequate, there were 2 other floor fans but still not able to keep it comfortable. Items that did not work: ceiling fans, indoor shower, internet, phone, CD Player & tv (only video's). Kitchen utensils/cookware were a little rough. The grill was a busted concrete base with a "Weber" lid just set on top but we improvised and still grilled. (Only saying bc I wish I had known some of this before so I could have been better prepared). We are adapters and we made the best out of it! Would I stay again? Yes, but like I said, I would be better prepared. We had an amazing time checking out the Island. It is a beautiful place!

Beautiful private beach getaway!
My husband and I stayed at the Casuarina Bay Round House for our week-long honeymoon. We would absolutely recommend it to anyone interested in visiting Eleuthera! True to its name, the house is circular, with gorgeous tall windows, a wrap-around porch, and very high ceilings. It felt quite spacious inside - a comfortable bed, living room area, dining table and chairs, fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, indoor and outdoor showers, and a loft with two additional beds. Everything was clean and very well taken care of. The house was built but its owner, Doon, and is filled with personal touches - from shell collections to colorful photographs of the island. The ocean was just steps outside of the door. The beach was secluded and peaceful - crystal clear water and a small reef just a little swim off the coast. French Leave Beach, which is about a five minute walk away, was also stunning. The cabana provided shade and was a great spot to dry off in the breeze and listen to the melodic hum of the waves. The beach was also beautiful at night - especially under the full moon. The house is about a 5-10 minute drive to Governor's Harbour where one can access grocery and liquor stores, a gas station, and several restaurants. The backstreets in this area were beautiful with crisp white houses and overflowing vibrant flower bushes. While some of these restaurants are a further drive from the house we would recommended Tippy's, Pascal's, The Rainbow Inn, and The Northside Inn. The Cove also offers day passes for access to their infinity pool, beachfront access, kayaks etc. We spent our final day with James Dunham on a private boat tour - we swam with sea turtles, spotted Dolphins, tried our hand at spear fishing, and dove for conch shells and sea glass. We would definitely recommended something of this sort as another way to see all that Eleuthera has to offer!

Magical dolphin experience and more
We celebrated 6 gorgeous Eleuthera days at Round House. The highlight of our visit being a friendly dolphin coming to swim with us as we were snorkeling right on the beach in front of the house! We enjoyed Twin Cove and French Leave beaches also, which are within walking distance. Exploring several Caribbean side beaches, Governor's Harbour and all the sights to see on the north side of the island made our days busy, adventurous, and FUN. Having this beautiful cottage to come back to each day or just staying there all day and enjoying all that this place has to offer was just divine! Doon could not have been more helpful. She's a wonderful host! We can't wait to return!!

Authentic!
Terrific family vacation at the Round House away from all the noise! Spectacular secluded beach 20 steps away and right in between the famous French Leave and Twin Coves beaches. The snorkeling is world class - sea turtles, eel, shark, grouper and countless other tropical fish among large coral formations. Roundhouse was plenty adequate for our family of five with kids (12, 13 and 16) in the loft. Very warm and inviting space with the wood floors, walls and ceilings and furnishings. All in all, a really chill and comfortable place to be and hang out or with the Honda CRV rental to get out and explore all of Eleuthera....so much to see and do. Be sure to check out the fish fry in Governor's Harbor. Many thanks to Taja and Doon for all their hospitality. We hope to see you again next year!

Truly Amazig
My wife and I have stayed in many places around the world, and I must say that our 2 weeks at the Roundhouse was a truly wonderful experience and one of the best two weeks we have had. This place is loaded with soul and charm. It is the opposite of a pre-fab condo environment. This is the real thing, built with creativity and love and reflects he owners artistic and joyful personality. It is also very comfortable and practical. Yes it is a bit remote, but that is a big part of its value. The beach and ocean there is stunning and almost entirely private almost all the time. The swimming and snorkeling there is terrific and safe. The community nearby in Governor's Harbor, is small but friendly and interesting. We used this time for relaxing, reading , writing, exercise and general all around rejuvenation and it was perfect for that purpose. We want to come back yearly now and try to keep that remarkable vibe going.

About the host

Hosted by Taja McKinney

Host profile image
The McKinney family has lived in The Bahamas for generations. When she was seventeen, Doon was teaching school in a remote village in Botswana. She fell in love with the idea of living in a round house. When she returned to The Bahamas she decided to move from Nassau to the remote and untouched island of Eleuthera and build her own round house on a 14 acre sea to sea estate running the entire width of the island.

Why they chose this property

Everyone was a bit skeptical of this young woman clearing the land by herself and building a house with no electricity, running water, car or a telephone. Camping out every night on the site helped her develop an intense connection with the land and gave her the opportunity to build a house that was perfect for the location. She decided to build 11 foot arches on all five sides of the house to allow the ocean breeze to sweep into the house. She nestled the house among coconut trees and Casuarina trees where you can hear the sound of the wind in the trees and the waves on the beach. She surrounded the house with a garden full of beautiful hibiscus, oleander, seagrape, coconuts and other native flowers and trees.

It was a challenge for a woman with limited carpentry skills to clear the land and almost single-handedly build a house- having never built so much as a box. Doon persevered and used creativity to overcome many of the obstacles she encountered. While still working on the building of the house Doon married and had 2 daughters (Casuarina and Taja)- Taja was born right in the Round house before the midwife even found her way out to Casuarina Bay.

What makes this property unique

The location of the Round House is second to none. You enjoy ocean breezes throughout the house and the private thatched cabana offers stunning views to the beautiful beach.
