About this property

One of a Kind Post and Beam Home on Private 100 acre Island

This home is very unique and special to me. I am a builder from Martha's Vineyard and put my heart, soul and experience into this one of a kind post and beam house. It sits on a private island on the West River that you access by going over a covered bridge. There are only two other homes on the island (island is over 100 acres). The house is 2800 square feet and the bedrooms range from 200 to 250 square feet. Each room has special touches down to the hand made tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms and branches in the railing systems. The kid's bunk bed system is handcrafted with logs and branches and sports an elevated walkway, trap door, and rope ladder. The massive 30-foot high interior fireplace is fashioned after a Lew French design and the spiral staircase to the loft has to be seen to be appreciated. I sit for hours listening to the river outside as it is only 30 feet from the house. Some days we put on our snowshoes and explore the island. We have just completed an around the island trail system that shows off its beauty complete with a 50-foot suspension bridge. My girls love looking for animal tracks. We have deer and beaver on the island. I have seen lynx tracks but have never seen one.

This is not really a rental property - this is my dream house. It is 10 miles from Stratton Mountain (about a 15-20 minute ride to the mountain) which is a great ski and snowboard area in the winter and golfing community in the summer. There is a swimming hole off of our trail system, waterfalls and the state park minutes away. And a bodega in town with all the supplies you would ever need.

The House rental comes with a parking pass so that you can always park right at the foot of the mountain. Stratton Mountain is one of the best run mountains I have ever been to. Their customer service is unmatched in Vermont - They give out tissues at the chair lifts on really cold days. The people that work at the mountain truly want you to have a good skiing experience. They are not just punching a clock. The ski school is first rate and my 6 year old daughter can already ski from the top of the mountain and guides me through some of the easier forest trails. Manchester is about 30 miles away and is home to every outlet store you would want to shop in.......... I could go on forever. Oh, and there is a jacuzzi that overlooks the river. Take a look at the pictures and contact me if you want to see more.

As VT as VT Gets-PERFECT
Had the absolute pleasure of staying at this home, which feels like a scene straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting. From the incredible craftsmanship of the house to the West River and trails just steps away, every detail was perfect. The modern amenities combined with its proximity to Stratton, Bromley, and Mt. Snow make it an unbeatable location. On top of that, the host was fantastic—I had the chance to meet him and learn some of the home’s history, which added even more charm to the experience. This property truly stands in a league of its own. I’ve rented dozens of ski homes, but this one is on a completely different level. Thank you for the privilege of staying here!

We can't say enough great things about this beautiful home! The house is lovely, cozy-comfortable with anything & everything we needed; even right sized play and practicality for the two-year-old. The property is amazing. We enjoyed walking the trails, listening to the river, & relaxing together. To top it off, the host was delightful.

Absolutely Wonderful
This house is absolutely beautiful, built by the owner, and well cared for. It had everything we needed and included a new hot tub which was a lovely surprise and beautiful as it overlooked the river and woods. The house is in an idyllic setting very close to Stratton and Bromley. The owner was very responsive and very helpful during our stay. Would absolutely rent this place again and plan to in the future!

This was a lovely place and perfect for 8 adults. Wasn’t designed for the baby but there were plenty of us to keep an eye on him. The house design and construction is impressive. Very open but feels very homey.

Magical Location
This is such a beautiful place in a beautiful location. We loved this place so much and the host was incredibly kind to work around our busy schedule. I hope I will be able to stay here again in the future because it was so relaxing. Everyone enjoyed the setting and the house. It is somewhat luxurious in a beautiful natural setting. They had everything in the kitchen you could possibly need and so many other books and useful items for your stay. It feels like a home while you are there, not just a rental.

Fantastic getaway
This property is truly remarkable. The setting is breath-taking and the home itself has everything you need. This is the perfect destination for large groups or families, as the bedroom sizes are very generous. I found the 2 story living room with stone fireplace and outdoor hot tub overlooking the river to be the two biggest "Wows!" of my experience. I hope to be back sometime in the early summer to enjoy the outdoor splendor of Vermont.

Beautiful home, amazing river views, excellent stay!
Kagan River Ranch truly is a masterpiece, beautifully decorated, and has everything you need. Setting is perfect and the river views are amazing. Rob met us at arrival to show us the house and the place was immaculate and very welcoming. It was nice to be as secluded as we were, yet close enough to town, skiing and other activities. Children loved the loft, while others enjoyed board games and wine by the fireplace in the living room. Rob is great to work with and we look forward to visiting again.

Fantastic Stay - Very Unique Home
We traveled with our children and some good friends for an annual ski trip over the holiday weekend. It was an exceptional weekend in no small part to Rob’s home. Rob was very helpful in the lead up to the stay fielding any questions we had. The home is well appointed with high end furnishings and felt more like staying at a friend’s house rather than a VRBO rental. The layout was perfect for our group. Outside of the living room there was a loft for the kids to play or watch a movie. The location is outstanding - less than 15 minutes to Stratton while feeling tucked away in nature given the island location. It was an extraordinarily relaxing spot with fabulous views from the whole house of the river.

Great location & vacation home
Oct 2010 -- A dozen members of our family gathered for a celebration & had a wonderful time at the gem. Stunning views of the West River and privacy among Jamaica's hills were wonderful. Proximity to Jamaica State Park, hiking trails and quaint Jamaica center (try Jamaica Coffeehouse!) made for great fun. The home is of the highest quality with everything in new condition, well appointed with all the amenities yet very comfortable. Wonderful open "great room/living room" with natural stone fireplace and adjacent dining room table easily accommodated our large group. Loft and bedrooms provided quiet privacy from the living room area. A great place for a get away!

Return stay at a wonderful house close to stratton
We love staying at this lovely house. The kids love driving over a small narrow bridge onto the small private island which has this house and two others. It is very private, yet close to everything. The house is in great shape, and a perfect layout for families. The kids intricate bunk beds are amazing and like sleeping in a tree house. The loft is perfect for the kids to play games or watch TV's while the adults hang out by the fireplace. Two of the bedrooms have great views which make you feel as if you are right on the river. Rob is very attentive to any issues. We hope to return for a third visit in the near future.

Truly a work of art.
If you're looking for an oasis of nature and privacy in this beautiful area of Vermont, look no further. Rob has built a home on this island that is Just as much art as it is structure. From the natural wood accents of the interior, to the setting along the river and the suspended footbridge that Rob recently built along the island trail, this is heaven. Rob was great to work with, always responsive to questions and gave us some tips to enjoy the local area. Having family in the area, I have rented several homes in the Townsend/Jamaica area over the past years, but this has been the most relaxing and pleasant experience yet. Thanks for everything Rob!

Perfect Place to Unwind
Stayed here with my family during July 4 weekend and it was even better than the descriptions. The house is as well maintained, stocked and thoughtfully designed as described in the listing and the prior guests' comments. What you can't get from those sources is just how calming and rejuvenating it is to be right next to the river, with the sound of rushing water constantly lowering blood pressure and providing a great soundtrack to the natural beauty of the island and the surrounding woods. Kitchen is well stocked and you can get provisions from multiple locations but we tended to stay close by at West River Provisions. Rained a lot during our first few days but honestly didn't mind, as the house is cozy and very comfortable. Rob is a great host and very responsive. Would highly recommend

Lovely house in fabulous setting
Two families stayed in this house for MLK weekend. There were 8 of us but the house could have easily accommodated more. The house is absolutely incredible. New built, charming, clean, tons of windows letting in sunlight. It is very upbeat and bright, yet cozy at the same time. Although it is spacious, it was still easy to keep an eye on the children as they loved hanging out in the loft complete with a hammock. The house is very clean, with spacious bedrooms and spotless bathrooms. The location of the house is also worth noting. It is on a private island that is close to everything yet "away from it all" as there are only three homes on the island. The rushing river by the house is soothing and the perfect "white noise" for sleeping at night. Rob is very easy to work with and was very considerate. Our only issue is that he doesn't rent it out often enough =( My kids are already asking about when they can return. We went to Stratton which was a quick drive. Highly recommend the house for the location, house itself, and the lovely setting!

Gorgeous Property with Solitude
We had two families with 10 people all together and the house very comfortably fit us all. The property is private and beautiful. I don't think the pictures did justice of how close and lovely the river is behind the house. We just sat outside for hours drinking coffee and listening to it before the teenagers finally woke up in the mornings...so peaceful. The kids trekked into the rocky river right off the house for fun. But to swim, we went down to the water hole and finally were able to visualize how big 100 acres really is! It was a hike with all our gear, but definitely worth it. We spent a whole day at the swimming hole. The other days, we drove 30 min to go to a lake and a quarry for jumping and swimming. The house is Rob's work of art and we all felt grateful that he is willing to share it. He was responsive to any questions or concerns. We all agreed the beds and linens are extremely comfortable and the showers had good water pressure. Lots of games around for fun. Tons of fireflies and a fire-pit made for enjoyable evenings outdoors. Our only constructive criticism would be for more outdoor furniture but it just made us assume the owners use it more often in the winter when sitting outside is less pleasant! We loved our stay.

Spectacular, spacious, comfortable house
By far the best vacation house we’ve ever stayed in. The owner, Rob, clearly put a huge amount of imagination and effort into designing and building the house and making it extremely comfortable and functional. He was also very responsive and easy to communicate with. The location is unsurpassed, offering total privacy (the other two houses on the island are far away) and beautiful views of the river, while also being within a few minutes of several small groceries and fun restaurants. We loved sitting in the great room and watching herons and even an eagle flying just above the river. One feature shows the care with which the house was designed. Rob pointed out in his virtual tour that the windows and doors that open have retractable insect screens. You can choose between opening the window and sliding the screen in place, or closing the window and having a completely unobstructed view. The house is very clean and extremely well furnished, with comfortable seating, an amazingly well-equipped kitchen, and lots of plush towels. Wifi was strong enough for several people to work at once, although we couldn’t get a Verizon cell signal. (We used wifi calling on our phones.) Two minor things to look out for: by late summer, there’s a lot of poison ivy growing on the walking trail around the island. And be careful if you use the oven: one time, a rack slipped off its support rails.

Charming House in a Idyllic Setting
Our family had a fantastic time staying in this charming house in the woods. The private location and the breathtaking view of the river from the house made our week one of the most relaxing family vacations ever. The kids had a great time exploring on the island before coming in to sit in front of the massive fireplace and the adults could not stop talking about the view from the back of the house (which is all glass) The house is an easy drive to both Stratton and Magic Mt and we would recomend either to anyone who is looking to ski. Stratton is bigger, more commercial and definetly busier of the two but has great skiing. Magic is a throwback to old time NE skiing and has outstanding terrain as long there is natural snow. Be prepared to wait in lines at Stratton and be prepared to freeze on the long old lift at MAgic. The description of the house is accurate but does not do it justice. The builder/owner seems to be a real quirky guy who put his heart and sole into the place and it shows in the interstesting wordwork...like the kids bunkbed room that is more like a tree fort. The place was clean, the appliances and everything else was new and almost looked unused. The house is easily big enough for two familys to share and the loft provides a place for the kids to have to themselves. The town of Jamaica is a 2 minute car ride away where you can find a general store that has everything you will need including great baked goods. Not to far away is the Dam Diner which is the epitome of small town Vermont charm...great home cooked food...and not one fork, spoon chair, table etc. match any other. If you want to explore, Manchester is about 35 minutes away where you will find shopping and great places to eat. I would recomend this house to anyone.

Beautiful home, responsive owner, great area
The home was special and met our space needs for three families with 5 kids. The loft gave the tween boys a space to watch TV and play video games, the bunk room was perfect for three girls of different ages, and the other bedrooms provided plenty of beds for everyone. River view is beautiful and was fun to wade in. Large table for everyone to sit at. Owner is super nice and responsive with any questions we had. Small 'provisions' store is nearby for things you might have forgotten and Stratton was maybe 15 minutes away. State park is close by and the island itself has nice trails for walking/biking. No complaints from our big group!

Why they chose this property

I took six years to build this house using the finist woods and handmade tiles. There are special details throughout this house to make it a one of a kind experience. You truly will not want to leave the house. The view from the house is a stunning river 12 months a year. I can never get enough of the view. And, we built an intricate trail system around the 100 acre island that the house sits on where you are apt to see turkeys, deer, beaver, foxes..........

What makes this property unique

This huge island is an oasis during these crazy times. There is plenty of room to roam, take a swim, bike and stretch out. We even have a garden for you to putter around in.

Skiing at Stratton is great and having the private parking pass that we include with the rental allows you to park at the foot of the mountain. This makes driving to the mountain a pleasure instead of a hassle.
