About this property

GORGEOUS 1880 ADOBE. 1100 SQUARE FT. 3 BLOCKS TO CANYON RD. WALK TO EVERYTHING.

EXQUISITE PRIVATE, SPACIOUS 1880 ADOBE IN HISTORIC EAST SIDE. Watch the sun setting over the mountains from our 1500-square-foot walled and fenced rear flagstone patio. The patio is ringed by beautiful gardens and shaded by an old honey locust tree. Then grill outside or go in and enjoy our beautifully furnished and art-filled home. No shared walls. Off-street parking amid huge park-like grounds by one of Santa Fe’s famous landscape designers—full of mature native xeric plants, shrubs, and perennial wildflowers as well as organic fruit trees. Lots of books on NM art, hikes, birds, wildflowers, butterflies, fiction, etc. This is my home for 3-4 months a year.

WALK 3 BLOCKS TO CANYON ROAD to enjoy scores of the city’s best galleries and restaurants, THEN WALK OR TAKE FREE PUBLIC SHUTTLE TO PLAZA AND OTHER POINTS. DOG FRIENDLY. Our beautiful, private, spacious walled and coyote-fenced adobe compound dates from 1880 and is in a colorful, historic Santa Fe neighborhood. Master bedroom has a king bed and a twin bed size window bench; second bedroom has twin-size trundle beds and doubles as an office with desk, chair, and file cabinet; living room has a queen sofabed and equipale sofa is a twin bed. Bathroom has two sinks, tub with shower--all completely tiled. Skylights; three wood burning kiva fireplaces; hardwood, tile, and slate floors. Large flagstoned entry foyer (in addition to apartment’s 1100-square-foot interior size). Tinwork throughout by award-winning Santa Fe artist. Chef's kitchen, hand-carved dining table seats 8, hand-carved doors; cove and viga-latilla ceilings. Lots of closets and storage space. FREE PUBLIC SHUTTLE: The Santa Fe Pick-Up makes stops on Canyon Road before heading to the Plaza and other points throughout the city. Or walk to the Plaza in 20 minutes. It's easy to leave your car parked on our enclosed grounds and spend time in town.

Designed for privacy and quietness and surrounded by extensive, beautiful xeric native gardens. Mature organic fruit trees and shrubs, pines, and lots of flowering plants create an oasis, perfuming the mountain air and sheltering numerous birds (including hummingbirds) and butterflies. Sit on rustic benches in front under the shade of old organic apple, hawthorne, and sugarberry trees and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells. Or enjoy a picnic or barbecue on the rear patio--plenty of seating, room for projects, and a barbecue grill for you and your guests.

This lovingly renovated home-away-from-home is furnished with full electronic system including new flat screen HDTV and DVD player, fastest internet service available in Santa Fe, interesting and comfortable furniture, outstanding art and book collection. Parking area, inside the walled and fenced grounds, is surrounded by chamisa (covered with yellow flowers September-October), pinon and ponderosa pine, organic fruit trees, and beds of shrubs and flowers.

It is a 15-20 minute stroll to St. John’s College and the Ataleya and Dale Ball Trailheads. A 10-minute drive will take you to the Audubon preserve, and in 30 minutes or less you'll be at the Santa Fe Ski Basin, 10000 Waves Japanese Spa, or the Santa Fe Opera. The onsite property manager is helpful and responsive, and the owner is happy to talk with you to answer any questions, etc. We promise you a warm, rich experience like so many other guests have enjoyed over the years! The historic beauty and spaciousness of our compound along with close proximity to everything is extremely rare in Santa Fe. Available for 29 nights or more; no short-term rentals.

REPRESENTATIVE RENTERS' QUOTES:
“I just wanted to let you know that Julie and I had a great time and Santa Fe and really enjoyed the apartment. Thank you very much for everything. It’s a great place. We also took your recommendations and went to La Choza and Café Sena, and hiked the Ataleya trial. It all made for a great vacation for us.
Again, thank you.”
Best regards,
Pete

“We really had the best time and will be in touch about coming back next year.
Is there anything you would like me to do before we leave?
Thank you again, we really had a great time!”
Fondly,
Marylyn

“We've been in a bit over a week and I haven't yet thanked you for your kind note and lovely bottle of wine - thank you for such a nice welcome!
Anyway, this photo was taken the day we arrived as we were about to set out on our first walk. Bear had been in the car for 3 days; he was ready to go! We've been on many outings since with his favorite being off leash on the many mountain trails full of other happy canines.
We love the house and its many charms. I feel like I'm just getting to know it, now that things have finally quieted down. I'd love to know the history of it if you get the chance.
Hope this finds you well and, again, thank you for everything.”
Lisa

“I've been enjoying the house, and Santa Fe's great fall weather-
I'm going to hate to leave.
I hope everything is going well with you all!!
Happy Halloween!”
Philip

“Thank you. What a wonderful house you have! We certainly want to come back. There is so much that we did not get to do. We are eagerly anticipating a return trip.”
Janet

“We have enjoyed our time here very much. Living in this neighborhood has given us an entirely different Santa Fe experience than we have had in the past. I have explored the area and learned my way around town, which has been a lot of fun. All in all, it has been delightful. I hate to go home where the heat has been over 100 for a long time- 110 yesterday! Thanks for sharing your lovely space.”
Ginger

“The stay was very enjoyable. We were wondering if your place is free in Aug. If so we would be interested in renting it”shaded by an old honeylocust tree.

Would definitely stay again!

My dog and I stayed here for a month and it was just perfect for us. Honestly.. the pictures don't do it justice. It was charming, spacious, comfortable, and relaxing. The skylights and windows made such a nice bright environment. The bed was SO comfortable. The kitchen was perfect for making meals. The backyard space was convenient as heck and a great place to look at the stars at night. The location was walking distance from Canyon Road and a little grassy park. Chris was super friendly and responsive to anything I needed and the neighbors who live on the property (no shared walls - everything still felt very private) are sweet and helpful as well. I would 10/10 both recommend this spot.

Magical setting

Loved staying in this house and this neighborhood! The old adobe walls and great windows kept us cool w/ our fans every day of our stay. Marie my labradoodle loved the back patio and her walks to the water park, along the river, canyon road and evening walks to see the sunsets….just a perfect month!

Lovely adobe

We loved our stay at this perfectly located two bedroom adobe that also offered art fully decorated common spaces. If you love history, beauty, and access to both cultural and natural offerings in the Santa Fe area, you will find it equally wonderful.

So hard to leave...

Our stay at Christine's house was absolutely wonderful. As a couple (and dog) moving to Santa Fe, it was a perfect home base for getting to know the city - and if it wasn't so popular, we would love to rent it long-term. The location, in the historic east side, a short walk from the galleries and restaurants of Canyon Road, is ideal. It's an easy walk to the Plaza and downtown, a quick drive to shopping and groceries. There are numerous great hiking trails within a mile or so. If you want to spend a month or more in Santa Fe, this is the perfect place to be. The house is spacious yet cozy, with wood-burning kiva fireplaces in the living room and both bedrooms, a great king-size bed, and beautiful, artistic details everywhere. The huge, lovely flagstone patio is great for enjoying the fresh air or firing up the grill. The kitchen is large and well-stocked, with lots of counter space, good appliances and a big, unique dining table. The gated front entry, set way back from the street and beautifully landscaped, lends the whole place a very private feel. The owner was incredibly warm and welcoming, and has been a HUGE help to us as we get to know the area. The property manager, who lives in a nearby casita, was also wonderful - very responsive when we had questions or requests, and always great to chat with. The reviews here really say it all - this is not just a nice vacation rental, it's a real home away from home. Like Santa Fe itself, we can't recommend it enough.

Just like Home

Spending a month in May at what I feel like is my New Mexico Casita is what I look forward to every year. The kitchen is spacious enough for me to set up as my printmaking studio with an etching press and still room to have dinner. With two bedrooms I also have room for any guest that might pass this way. The bathroom has a beautiful tiled tub and shower and two sinks makes it extra nice. There are windows throughout to open and let the New Mexico breeze in. Skylights in the living room adds extra light. A fireplace in both bedrooms and one in the living room makes for a warm homey feel. The large patio is great for that morning coffee. Now to the front yard. Cactus and lots of flowers, (wish I could name them but that will have to be next time). The location is close enough to Canyon Road Galleries and restaurants that you can easily walk. I would highly recommend Chris’s Casita to anyone who wants to explore Santa Fe and all of New Mexico. Working with Chris is like working with a friend. She responds quickly and wants you to have the best time while in Santa Fe.

Beyond expectations

This was my husband's and my first visit to Santa Fe, and we did not want to leave at the end of the week. Chris's casita was perfect for us--charmingly decorated and comfortably appointed, extremely quiet at night, light-filled during the day (loved the skylights!), with a comfy king bed in the Master bedroom, a spacious eat-in kitchen, and a cozy living room with a kiva fireplace that we enjoyed several times. The house is even more spacious than it looks in the photos. And the location was so convenient, especially to Canyon Road's galleries and restaurants. From the first communication, Chris was extremely helpful. We ate at many of the restaurants she recommended, all great, and visited local museums as well as driving to Taos one day (highly recommend!). This was one of our best VRBO experiences ever. We plan to return to Santa Fe, and we hope to stay again in what we are now calling "our casita."

Charming, comfortable home in perfect location

This comfortably furnished casita is unusual in that it gets more light than many Santa Fe homes, so the sunshine streams in all winter long, yet the thick adobe walls keep it cool in hotter weather. It has all the amenities you need for an extended stay. The location is accurately described as 'walk anywhere.' We lived there without a car and enjoyed the easy access on foot to coffee shops, galleries, museums, and the downtown plaza area, as well as Dale Ball trailheads for hiking in the hills. The casita is on a very quiet street, and there is no traffic noise at all. The separate bedrooms allowed for privacy to relax or work, and yet there is a spacious openness to the living room, kitchen/dining room areas that give the house a warm, connected feeling. Chris is a responsive and friendly landlord whose concern that guests have all they need for a pleasant stay is paramount. I highly recommend this casita for a visit to Santa Fe of days, weeks, or months. It is delightful in every way.

This was my second stay at this casa. I had such a great experience one year ago that I wanted to stay for a whole month this time around. The house is like a home away from home. When I walked in it was like coming home. The house is well appointed, art filled and very clean. It is very quiet and private. This time around I was able to meet Chris who is the owner. She had many great ideas on places to go for sightseeing, meals and entertainment. The house is very close to nice little pubs and Canyon Road galleries. If you have never been to Santa Fe before this is the perfect place have a home base. I will return!

Charming place to stay

From start to finish we loved our time in Christine's vacation rental, we would highly recommend staying here and she was a delight to work with in every way. We came to Santa Fe with our dog to enjoy hiking in the mountains, walks around town, delicious food, and relaxation....we found it all. This place really is charming, a pretty blue gate leads you into the front entry, thick adobe walls, fireplaces, a well-equipped kitchen, pretty artwork everywhere, nice rugs, very comfortable bed, it felt like home. We were sorry to leave after a week and will definitely be back for another stay. The location was great, a short walk to Canyon Road galleries, the Friday night open galleries were especially fun, quiet neighborhood, nice walk to the plaza, east side of town was perfect for accessing Hyde Park Road up to great hiking in the Ski Valley, as well as Atalaya Mountain just a few miles away. We feel very fortunate to have found such a great place to stay, it's a gem!

Loved Everything about this Home

It's one thing to rent a house, it's quite another to rent a home. Christine's Santa Fe home is warm and charming, much more spacious than I anticipated, fully equipped and comfortable. .2 miles walk to the Teahouse on Canyon Road, the location is fantastic. Just a short drive to the center of town....everything is easily accessible. The beds were supremely comfortable, the neighborhood quiet. Chris' advice about what to see and do in the area was invaluable -- with her guidance we ate fabulous food, saw amazing art and spectacular scenery. I LOVED this stay and can't wait to schedule a return. Thank you, Christine, for opening your home to us!

Warm, beautifully decorated, fully equipped, spectacular location

I'd been on a road trip for 2 1/2 months, staying at various VRBO and Airbnb homes all across the country, and this home was the VERY BEST place I stayed! Chris was so easy to communicate with. The home had everything we needed for our week long stay. Chris had many tips about what sites to visit during our trip. My two dogs were welcomed and there are great walks nearby that are dog friendly. The beds and linens are very comfortable, the home is quiet, and there are beautiful fireplaces for those chilly evenings. This is clearly a well loved home that the hosts regularly use themselves, which makes it a privilege to stay there. Thank you, Chris!

Spacious and well appointed.

When I arrived at the casa I was surprised at how spacious it was. There was plenty of room for myself and the guests I had invited to join me on my 10 day stay. I also had my two well behaved dogs who were welcomed without question. On the kitchen table was a welcoming packet of delectable chocolate which was made by neighbor Linda. A fully appointed kitchen was perfect for cooking and hanging out. The casa was within walking distance to Canyon Road and the Plaza as well as museums, restaurants and churches. The area is filled with history and was a great place to walk (with or without dogs). While I was at the casa there was a full moon that lit up the landscape-just gorgeous! Three fireplaces were available for cozy evenings and the surrounding area was very quiet. Christine is wonderful to do business with and I will return. She gave me helpful suggestions as to restaurants and galleries which I enjoyed. Uber pleasant experience and wonderful people!

Cozy Adobe cottage

This was the perfect home for our family's Christmas/New Years vacation. The home accommodated all four of us plus our terrier. The location is top noch, just steps away from the galleries on Canyon road. My son commented that, "Everything is on five minutes way." We loved the traditional Adobe features, such as three kivas and the beamed ceilings. The high Adobe walls keep all traffic noise at bay. I highly recommend this home for anyone wanting to get to know Santa on a more personal level. You will feel like a local.

Cozy Santa Fe Adobe Home

We had a wonderful visit in Chris's fully stocked, charming Santa Fe adobe home - very quiet, beautiful artwork, and very comfortable. It was November with a surprise snow storm but everything remained cozy and warm. The kitchen was complete with a beautiful table, perfect for a dinner in with friends. The location was perfect for us and fun to be in this lovely residential section, near to Canyon Road, the Tea House, and Downtown Subscription. We were able to entertain one night, do a big load of laundry, and have fun with our new grand baby. We did not use the fireplaces, tempting as it was given the cold weather, but the house remained warm nonetheless.

My Home Away From Home

In the description it says Home away from Home and that describes this wonderful Casita. As I entered I felt like it was mine, and it was for a month in October. I unpacked my printing press (I turned the kitchen into a Printmaking Studio) and begin to gather leaves and flowers from the yard to make Nature Prints. I made day and overnight trips throughout New Mexico but was always excited to return to my home away from home. As an artist I so enjoyed all the collected artworks throughout the Casita. I could continue with so much more but just to say that staying in this Casita and many email exchanges with Chris was a big part of my New Mexico experience. I will be back and hope to stay even longer.

Adobe Retreat

We stayed in this house for two weeks in the spring. It was everything that we expected from the description and more (The photo of the house exterior doesn't do it justice). It was clean and well maintained and furnished with everything we needed and more. There were lots of birds in and around the house because of the large number of trees and plants on the property. The owner provided answers to our questions and gave us a list of suggestions. We appreciated the library of reference books and guides that were in the house since we were strangers to this part of the continent. I would most certainly recommend this property to others. We enjoyed the hiking, art galleries shopping and restaurants and day trips outside of Santa Fe.

Cozy adobe compound

Thank you Chris for sharing your lovely home with us. It was our first time in Santa Fe and we were not disappointed. Thanksgiving Retreat

We found this property roomy, clean, comfortable and very conveniently located. Loved having a fireplace in the bedroom. Pictures show it all. Would like to return in the spring. We walked to El Farol following a major snowstorm & delighted in seeing this village of terra cotta walls rimmed with snow & luminaries. The office could be a second bedroom with futon, closet and another fireplace. The neighbor even left her delicious handmade chocolates as a welcoming gift!

charming and authentic casita

A friend and I rented the casita for 6 days in Oct. Artfully furnished this casita really felt like someones home rather than a rental. There is alot of room to move around in without bumping into each other, very comfortable beds, fully furnished kitchen with washer/dryer and wifi, and clean and well maintained, we felt right at home. The neighborhood is very quiet and quaint. It is a short walk to Canyon Rd. and since my friend is an elder a short drive to the Plaza. There is so much to see here...a perfect location to take evening strolls. The owner was very helpful to us in facilitating ease in our transactions and very pleasant to work with. She provided us with all kinds of fun things to do and see for the area which was very helpful. I would hands down recommend this property to any one wanting an authentic feeling home for their stay in Santa Fe. We enjoyed our stay here so much I am hoping to return in the spring!

Perfect for us

Our family (2 children and pets) and this rental are/were perfect for each other. The apartment is beautiful and decorated so it feels like home, not a rental. The beds were very comfortable, the neighbors are fantastic, and the location can't be beat. Canyon Road is a couple blocks away where you can catch the Santa Fe Pick-Up (free) that takes you wherever you need to go. We took it often to to the front door of the Main Library. Plus, you're minutes from great hiking trails. We are counting down the days until our return next summer.

True Santa Fe Style

Located in a quiet neighborhood, just blocks from popular Canyon Road shops and restaurants, this home provided all that we wanted for our accommodations while in Santa Fe. Spacious , clean and well maintained, it had everything we needed. The kitchen was well equipped, adjacent to a laundry room Complete with washer, dryer , iron and ironing board. Working WiFi was an added plus The owner provided us with a list of favorite restaurants, museums, shops, hikes, as well as suggestions for day trips. This was most helpful to us as newcomers to Santa Fe. We appreciated that there was a manager in an adjacent house on the compound , a good source of information as well. I'm ready to go again.!

Wonderful 1st family vacation in a perfect casita

We had such a wonderful time staying in the casita. The pictures posted on VRBO do not do it justice. It's such a charming place; well equipped with everything that we possibly needed (including a crib!), that we didn't want to leave. Even our 16 month old had a blast! It's a lovely, clean, comfortable, stylish home that was the perfect place to stay at while visiting Santa Fe for a week. It's east-side location was perfect (walking distance to Canyon Road, close to downtown) & very peaceful. Christine, the owner, was wonderful in our communication & easy to get a hold of. I can't imagine staying anywhere else when we return. I highly recommend the rental for future visitors to Santa Fe; it was absolutely lovely.

About the host

Hosted by Chris Schluter

Host profile image
I am a retired consultant to nonprofits, mostly colleges and universities, but also hospitals, museums, etc. Before that, I was a college teacher and administrator. I love Santa Fe's cultural richness, arts, great food (especially green chile and sopapillas, which in their delectable northern New Mexico form are found nowhere else, in my view), spectacular scenery with such a variety of ecosystems, wonderful hiking, birding and other wildlife viewing.

Why they chose this property

It's old Santa Fe at its best--beautifully and very comfortably appointed and maintained both indoors and out, with mature landscaping by a famous designer. In minutes we can be on the trail hiking up Atalaya Peak, summit 9,121. Afterward, we can walk three blocks to dinner at Geronimo's, the Compound, or El Farol and all the shops and galleries on Canyon Road. The home is in an historic Santa Fe neighborhood; yet we have extensive, secluded grounds with beautiful, private native, xeric gardens, organic fruit trees, and a huge, completely enclosed and private patio.

What makes this property unique

Great privacy and beauty very close to everything. Flocks of butterflies and birds, including hummingbirds, live here because the property is filled with mature native trees, shrubs, and perennials, and organic fruit trees. Sitting on the 1000-square-foot enclosed, private and quiet patio, or strolling paths by the front beds, it's hard to believe that we're minutes to Canyon Road and the Plaza.
