1. The water for our home comes from an underground well and can be unpredictable depending on precipitation levels and time of year. To remediate we have; two Triple Ozone systems, three stage (manganese, iron and hydrogen sulfide) iSpring filtration system and separate charcoal filter at the well. In addition, we have a Reverse Osmosis system in both kitchens for purified drinking water.   We monitor the well on a continual basis as it is shared with our neighbor.  The water will always have some degree of underlying scent of sulfur; although it is perfectly safe.  This comes with the territory of being remote on 5 acres in the mountains.  If you are sensitive to well water and require city water, please stay in the city.

2. All-wheel drive is always recommended especially during winter months, in case of snow. You will drive up 800 ft of unpaved road to reach our private gravel road to our home. Convenient parking is available in front of the stonework on either entrance. Complimentary Level 2 -EV charger NEMA 10-30 and Tesla adapter available in the carport for your charging convenience.

Nice Property for first visit to Santa Fe

This was our first time visiting Santa Fe and it was nice to have property a little outside of Santa Fe. We were able to enjoy a few restaurants close to the property as well as the quiet and serene outdoors.

Stargazing gem

Came here with our three kids (9, 7 and 4), and had a great stay. Beds were comfortable, the house was so quiet, and we took full advantage of the various outdoor seating options. Kitchen was well stocked, and we made several yummy meals. The stargazing at night was truly wonderful, and we were even able to catch a meteor shower on our last night. We purposefully chose a home outside of town, and the drive to and from Santa Fe and other attractions was reasonable.

Relaxing stay outside of Santa Fe

We spent 4 nights at this property and had planned on doing some sightseeing but after venturing out to the Santa Fe Plaza and seeing the crowds we decided to just stay at the house and relax. Mornings were spent watching the hummingbirds and nights were spent stargazing - the Milky Way is easily visible naked eye from this location. As others mentioned the water smells a bit but we just bought bottled water at a grocery store and were fine. The grocery store, Upper Crust pizza and Cafe Fine are just down the road - 10 min tops and it was easy enough to order food for take away and enjoy it back at the house. We had two dogs with us and appreciate the dog friendly rental. The owner was very responsive to emails and questions. Would definitely stay there again.

So great! Our dream home.

Awesome property and 5 adults very much enjoyed our stay. Yes it’s remote, but that’s what makes it so great. Beautiful sunsets and stars we haven’t seen in many years. The house is beautiful, cozy, and clean. The view is wonderful (could be spectacular eliminating just two trees blocking what would be a much wider amazing view). The smaller bedroom needs additional a/c flow on hot summer afternoons, and the master shower needs a simple shelf for soap, shampoo, razor, etc. Sure, there are always a few suggestions we have for our vacation rentals, but this place has very few. We just left and already planning to get back. Highly recommended!

Family trip to Santa Fe

The host was very responsive and checked in to make sure we settled in comfortably. We enjoyed our stayed and the place was nice when it snowed. The location was more remote and further from the center of Santa Fe than we anticipated. We have stayed in Santa Fe several times and this is the most remote we ever stayed. Other than the location, everything else we good.

Peaceful Getaway

This home was a lovely, peaceful getaway about 15-20 minutes outside of Santa Fe. It was well-equipped, allowing us to settle in easily. The surrounding area is gorgeous, and the stargazing at night is incredible. The only caveat we would offer is that due to use of well water, the water pressure can be a bit weak and does smell of sulfur.

Enjoyable stay and good value.

My husband and I enjoyed our stay very much. The property was very private even though we had someone renting the studio apt next to us, we never heard them. We loved the sunroom and convenient kitchen. There are a few updates and repairs that need attention but we were told they will be taken care of. Overall our experience was very nice. Love this little casita! Very cozy! Great value!

Perfect seclusion

A girlfriend and I planned a weekend get away in Santa Fe. This time was ideal for us. It is quaint and quiet. The natural scenery is beautiful! One night we went to ship in Santa Fe, then came back and cooked dinner. The Kitchen had everything we needed. One night we stopped mimosas by the outdoor fire and watched the moon rise over three mountains. We could not ask food anything better. It was clean, cozy, well-defined, and beautiful decor. If I'm ever in Santa Fe again, I would definite stay there.

Beautiful property

Loved this quaint little place. It was such a nice getaway. My Only complaint is that the second bedroom didn’t have a door. Just a sheer curtain as a door. This little nugget of information was not posted anywhere. We should have been informed of this prior to. We enjoyed our stay though. It was nice to have both great indoor and outdoor space.

Nice house but

The house is really cute but the stench of the water made it uninhabitable. We took showers and all smelled like sulphur so we went to shower again at a hotel. There were also sounds of animals in the walls at night so sleeping was a challenge. Good luck to whoever rents this property.

Forest views

Great forest and mountain views in a fairly private rental a reasonable drive from Santa Fe. Nice kitchen and bathrooms. Kitchen well stocked, but not cluttered. Nice amount of windows for natural light and forest views. Unique interior wood, stone, and tile construction in typical regional Adobe construction. Lots of outdoor patio and deck space in a private setting. Unit is part of a duplex. We hardly noticed the neighboring unit. Each has their own parking and entrance with good separation between the two. Road is not very walkable, however there are several hiking areas nearby, accessible by driving.

Santa Fe

Our family loved our stay at Diana’s home outside of Santa Fe. We stayed for a full week exploring the area with our three teenage children over spring break. The house was easy to get to, just about 15 minutes outside of the city. The view from the porch was beautiful and we enjoyed the adobe architecture and southwest style. The sunroom was a nice space to sit and relax on a warm day. The house was clean, looked just as described, and we had great communication with the host throughout our stay. We were able to easily connect to wifi at the house. The house worked well for the five of us, and one of our children slept on the twin-size bed that’s located in the living room. As described by the host, the water is from a well and does have a bit of a sulphur smell. There is filtered water at the kitchen sink that we used for cooking. We recommend staying at Diana’s place and would return when visiting Santa Fe in the future! Some highlights of our trip included Ghost Ranch- we recommend horseback riding and the Oppenheimer movie set tour, skiing at Ski Santa Fe, visiting Meow Wolf, Bandelier, and Pecos National Historical Park.

Serenity!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the property was lovely! Couldn't have wished for a more quiet, serene location to send our time exploring Santa Fe in. The property was extraordinarily clean, well kept and had all the amenities needed for our stay. We enjoyed the peace and quiet and cool evenings on the patio listening to nature the area had to offer. It was a great location to all the sites we wanted to see and close to the city of Santa Fe. It was very private even with the neighbors next door. I was worried when we realized there was no A/C but the cool breezes and evenings in the mountains kept the home comfortable for sleeping although I had no idea how to work the swamp cooler but didn't really need it. The surrounding area was beautiful and had plenty of areas for hiking right out the back door. Would definitely stay again if ever i the area! You will not be disappointed.

very nice stay

We visited with my two dogs. I was very nervous about this knowing that there wasn't a fenced in yard for my dogs to run around. I was reassured that the property was on 10 acres, but when we arrived we saw that this was not flat open useable land and the house was actually divided into two properties. The other property was also being rented by people with a dog. My dogs have a lot of energy and are not the biggest fans of other dogs, so the situation was even more difficult than I expected. Still, the house was very nice and the beds were very comfortable. We had a very nice stay even though it really didn't work well for my dogs.

Secluded, Rustic Comfort

We rented CasadeVaca II in Santa Fe because we wanted to visit the Albuquerque Balloon Festival and spend a little time in Santa Fe. It's a 1-hour drive to the festival and 10-15 minutes into Santa Fe. CasadeVaca II is located in the mountains/hills east of town, and feels pretty remote - exactly what we were hoping for. We were able to sit at the table on the deck and watch the sunset behind the mountains without seeing any other houses, just trees, hills, and sky. The house itself a pretty cool place. For anyone wanting a genuine Santa Fe experience, CasadeVaca II feels like a house that's been there for a century or two but with modern amenities and comforts. And there's a pizza joint and a grocery store 8-10 minutes away. You know, for the necessities : ) Finally, we had the good fortune to meet the owners as they came to town to stay in an adjoining unit a few days before we checked out. They were great hosts and seemed happy and willing to ensure that we had a comfortable stay. I highly recommend CasadeVaca II for anyone coming to Santa Fe for a visit.

Remote, Adequate, Affordable

We enjoyed staying at this rental. We liked that the house was surrounded by nature though it is quite a far distance from town...about a 25 minute drive. The house was well-stocked and had everything we needed. Our favorite features were the two very (!) comfy beds and the electric fireplace in the living room. Our least favorite aspects were the carpet-covered hole at the bottom of the stairs, which we had to be careful of, and the shower. It was awkward getting in and out of the shower and the water pressure was always very low. Sometimes the water wasn't hot and we had to wait. Because we needed to keep the room closed off to keep the heat in the living room, we never used the attached sunroom though we could imagine doing so in warmer weather. Given all this, the price felt about right. The owner was pleasant and responsive, via email. Though they are small things, I found all the notes and literature about and in the house to be a bit too much and didn't like that the cleaning lady came in the house about 5-10 minutes before the 11:00 am check-out, while we were still bringing our suitcases downstairs, and seemed annoyed we were still there. I would have preferred a bit of a grace period (10-15 minutes) and for her to have waited outside. All-in-all, we were very satisfied with this rental and would enjoy staying there again should we ever need another place in Santa Fe.

Beautiful retreat.

I was running out of days off but wanted to stay a couple of days near Santa Fe. I am from San Antonio. I didn’t want to be in town and found Casa De Vaca. What a great stay! The drive to the house was easy and the property is secluded. You are just minutes from yown. You are surrounded by nature at this house. The property does have an adjoining house but the design of the property makes them feel apart and each has its own private outdoor space, opposite one another. The house is a traditional adobe with vigas and latillas, but it has lots of windows and two sky lights that let in a lot of light. The porch was enclosed and made into a fantastic sunroom that overlooks the outdoor living space. The house was very clean, the kitchen is well equipped with a great, 4 burner gas range and nice frig. The layout is very unique and has two levels. The architect that designed this place really had a great concept. I really wished I could have stayed a week or more. Next time. I will definately stay here again. Probably in the winter, when it snows. The house was comfortable, despite daytime highs in the 90’s. The main bedroom does have an ac, which cools very well. The nights bot down into the low 50’s, so nomac needed. Francis, the owner was very communicative and responded quickly to my questions. He really wants his guests to be satisfied. He has multiple rentals, so he knows why he is doing. Staying here makes you feel like a local. I would love to retire to a place like this. BTW, there are two great restaurants just down the road, on the way into Santa Fe. Stay here, you’ll love it! I did!

Summer hot house blues.

The place is not air conditioned as described. One room is and most of the windows that would create a cross beeeze are stationary and DO NOT OPEN. Small windows in the sunroom do not allow air into main part of house. Second bedroom very hot and fans provided do nothing to cool it down. Master bedroom is cool and is only room that is. I was there end of July and it was hot even though it rained. We left a day early because of hot house. Owner also discourages use of split air in master saying it cost $750 to recharge it. One should never have to recharge an AC unless there’s a leak which would cause a whole other set of problems. The walkway to the car at night is dark and has steps that are easy to miss. It would have been so much better had there really been AC In the whole house or at the very least the windows that needed to open opened. This is a winter/fall/spring house not a summer house. When we first arrived I contacted him and I expressed the hot house concerns and he just told me he always got good reviews and no once else complained. I can only think that’s because they weren’t there in the summer. Did nothing else to help situation so we went and bought $100 worth of fans. The house is nice enough but there needs to be a switch at the top of the stairs to turn the light off and on and not just at the bottom. Probably been happier if it were highs in the 40-50s.

Beautiful relaxing home! A tad complex.

We loved the stay at this beautiful home! It was remote and very culturally “Santa Fe.” We loved being out away from town and The home was really cozy. It stayed warm and it was really quiet. The instructions for the home were very long. They were not provided in the app but by direct email which mine went to junk folder. When I asked the property owner, he said it kicked back 3 times - but didn’t try to send them in any alternative way. Not helpful. The instructions were a little bit Overwhelming to read through all the stuff and make sure you follow all of the “rules.” Almost feel like you can’t touch anything. It’s reasonable stuff and nothing that probably isn’t necessary for people that don’t treat rentals kindly, but just a little redundant and long. The driving directions were necessary since the address put into maps won’t get you there but they were not well written - they were written coming from only one direction and not the other as well, which we came from the direction that was not. Also, It listed to look for a street at approximately 1.3 miles when it was actually 2.3 miles... it was a little hard to follow when you are first trying to find the house. After you find it you’re good. I might have missed it but I do not believe the listing explains that the house is actually a townhome. There is a shared wall with another home and it’s a thin wall, you can hear each other very easily. It would also be beneficial for the listing to note that the home is off of a dirt road and some parts are steep and washed out, not a big deal if you are driving 4wd, but could potentially pose difficulty for small sedan vehicles. Lastly, there is a pet fee for each dog (We have 2) but there was not an option to select two dogs at the time of reservation in the app so the prop owner said he could collect it at check in. I thought that would mean there would be a charge on VRBO app for me to pay- no- he wanted me to leave cash on the counter for the house keeper to pick up. I’m not sure anyone would leave cash on a counter? We are happy to pay it, but non traceable cash that is not shown in the app seems like an odd request. We loved this stay and would stay again. The prop owner was nice and we appreciate an offer he made to extend our stay at a discount. The property is beautiful and the home was really comfortable and cozy. Thanks!

Cory and I met in Chicago. We would visit the southwest where I was born and raised and he would often ask, “Why don’t we live here”? Granted we were usually escaping the Chicago winter and enjoying 60-degree weather. We eventually moved back to my hometown of El Paso, Texas for family reasons where we have lived for the past 10 years. Cory being an adrenaline junkie loves all things outdoors. Although, he loves the El Paso desert and the 330+ days of sunshine (so he can downhill mountain bike and ride motorcycles), he also craves the winter slopes. Our 11-year-old son is doing a great job of keeping up with Cory on the black diamonds. We found the perfect compromise when we landed on Casa de la Vaca in Santa Fe! A beautiful, serene mountain get away nestled in the foothills of magical Canoncito. It’s a short drive for us and we love to stop along the way in Albuquerque. It is so kid friendly that we do trips to the museums, Explora, zoo, Mama’s minerals and our favorite Sawmill Market. In the summer, we can escape the heat in EP and with so much to do in Santa Fe we have a great place to visit all year round. We couldn’t be more excited to enjoy our second home and share it with family & friends and now thanks to platforms like VRBO with guests when we are not in town. A bit of a win, win. We love to travel and enjoy good cuisine, so Santa Fe really fits the bill. There are so many great restaurants, hiking trails, museums, spas, festivals, the opera, skiing, farmer’s markets, the second largest art market in the country, nearby Taos and Chimayo and the list goes on and on. It really is a cosmopolitan gem in the high desert. The VRBO vacation rental opportunity has allowed us to do what we love; meet new people, travel, and share our stories. We hope we get to meet you and hear your story. Best, Diana and Cory

What makes this property unique

Other things to note: Cuisine -We love to cook and have some essentials in the kitchen for your convenience. At the nearby Eldorado community, you can find gas, and groceries at the Agora market. There are also a few local eateries we like to support. Of course, we have Whole Foods, Trader Joes's and other chain supermarkets in downtown Santa Fe. You happen to be in one of the food capitals of the world so take advantage of the amazing cuisine that Santa Fe has to offer. Pets: We welcome well-behaved pooches. Sorry, felines only dogs are allowed. Pets are allowed with advanced approval at $100 per pet. This fee is included as we take added measures to thoroughly disinfect and sanitize the home to ensure there is no trace of a pet after each stay. We appreciate your cooperation in crating your pets when left alone and not allowing them on any furniture. We know our pets are family and we want them to travel with us, we have a cockapoo of our own, so we know. We also need to ensure that we respect all of our guests who may have sensitives or allergies and strive to deliver the best experience in our homes. Nature and your surroundings: You are surrounded by a 4,000 acres nature preserve with miles upon miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. These trails are very well marked and range from easy strolls to more strenuous hikes. As you drive down Ojo da la Vaca road you will see two areas to park to access the trail heads. We have hiking sticks available during your stay, adjust them and set out and explore. The items in the house are for our guests, so please feel free to enjoy. After a full day feel free to set up the portable massage table which has disposable covers for the headrest. There are also top rated spas in Santa Fe to choose from. There is so much to do and see in Santa Fe and the surrounding areas. Please check out the Welcome book for our personal recommendations. We look forward to hosting you during your stay in Santa Fe!
