NEIGHBORHOOD DESCRIPTION:
San Carlos is bounded by Del Cerro and Navajo to the west, Fletcher Hills and the city of El Cajon to the east, and the cities of Santee and La Mesa to the north and south. Most of East County was ranch land a century ago, and the area retains a rural, ranchero feel even in the new developments.
The nearest supermarket is an Alberstons, just under a mile away on the south side of Navajo Road, near Lake Murray Boulevard. It shares its parking lot with a Rite Aid, O’Reilly’s auto parts store on one side, and a Kahoots pet supply store on the other. Go a third of a mile farther down Navajo (on the right just past the 125 Freeway overpass), and there’s a Smart & Final (the biggest and best rotisserie chicken around and commercial-sized groceries and household products. There’s also a CVS drugstore right next door. You’ll also find a Denny’s, Joann fabric shop, laundromat, Hallmark store, amazing Chinese restaurant, and Sushi Restaurant nearby!
The Fletcher Hills branch library and San Carlos branch library are each about two miles away but in opposite directions. The nearest booksellers are at the shopping malls, along with the department stores and movie theaters: Parkway Plaza to the east (but not in the actual mall proper), and Grossmont Center to the south, each about three miles away. Parkway Plaza is unique in San Diego because it is an indoor mall, which makes it a popular air-conditioned retreat in the summer.
The recreation areas of Lake Murray are about 3-5 miles away, depending on your route. Note that the walking and biking path around the lake does not go all the way around; you can go about two-thirds of the way around and then you must turn around and return the way you came. You can rent various small watercraft for fishing or relaxing on the water. The lake is stocked with fish, however, you need a valid fishing license. You can fish without a license at Santee Lakes, about a seven-mile drive away.
San Carlos has the City of San Diego’s biggest natural feature besides the beach. If you turn away from the ocean, on a clear day, you can see it, and we are fortunate to be right at the base. It’s Cowles Mountain, and at 1,591 feet it’s the highest point within San Diego city limits! From the summit, on a clear day, you can see the ocean. You also can see into Mexico and the rest of San Diego County, both of which have peaks that dwarf Cowles Mountain. But, for a city peak, Cowles Mountain is terrific. It has miles of hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails on it.
The main trailhead is a mile and a half away, at Navajo and Golfcrest, which has a parking lot and restrooms. From there, a trail goes up the western slope of Cowles Mountain. From either trailhead, it’s a three-mile round trip to the summit and back, with about 1,000 feet of elevation gain and loss. The trails cut through brushy, rocky chaparral; on a clear day you can expect no shade but exceptional vistas. Take lots of water and sunscreen!
Nestled in the rolling hills of San Diego County, the San Carlos neighborhood is near outdoor recreation opportunities, renowned cultural attractions, fun entertainment options, and easy access to retail and commercial areas. Plus, the area is famous for its near perfect climate, walkable neighborhoods, family friendly experiences, and endless supply of everything needed to create a perfect vacation.
The area’s abundant hiking and urban trails are a main draw to this part of San Diego. Just 3 minutes away is Mission Trails Regional Park home to Cowles Mountain and beautiful Lake Murray. The park’s rugged hills, valleys and open areas encompass more than 8,000 acres of both natural and developed recreational area with 60 miles of trails, and the lake offers swimming and boat rentals for fishing. Mount Helix, 10-minutes by car, is another great hiking spot that offers panoramic views and on clear days you can see all the way to Mexico from its summit!
Be sure to also check out nearby La Mesa’s "Secret Stairs", a system of public stairways in the Mt. Nebo / Windsor Hills area that are ideal for a good cardio burn when navigating the challenging steep ascents. Families with younger children will love Harry Griffen Park with its large grassy area, playground, and outdoor stage featuring summer concerts and more.
For fresh produce, the La Mesa Farmers' Market is held every Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on La Mesa Boulevard between Palm Avenue and 4th Street. A Vons grocery store is located 1 mile from the house, and there are several restaurants and retail shops at nearby Grossmont Center (3 miles) and Parkway Plaza Mall (5 miles).
Hit the Pacific Beaches in about 20 minutes with several great options to choose from including Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla Shores Beach, and Coronado Beach. For breathtaking views and the most amazing sunsets that you will ever see, visit Sunset Cliffs, Natural Park – definitely an Insta-worthy spot you don’t want to miss.
Additionally, all the area’s popular attractions are within a 15-mile radius from the property: San Diego State University, several breweries, a local wine tasting room, Downtown San Diego, Liberty Station, Balboa Park, Old Town, Sea World, Sea Port Village, concert venues, and so much more!
