About the host
Hosted by Amber

Hi, my name is Amber! It is a pleasure to meet you and host you. My early life began in the California Bay Area and culminated in moving to the majestic mountains of Trinity County. In 2008 my life changed forever when I was chosen to caretake Barney Gulch Homestead. In the decades that followed living in relationship with this incredibly wild and untamed mountain paradise taught me more than could be described here in a few sentences. Fifteen years later my husband, Jonny, and I now own the land and have invited a new caretaker to move in (the wonderful Hal), while we have migrated back to the coast for the next chapter of our lives. The homestead is still our Spiritual Home and we spend as much time as we can there. When we are not there it brings us a huge amount of joy to share it with vacation guests ... You! Jonny and I both work in Healing Arts and spend as much time as possible curiously exploring the outdoors with our three beloved fur mutts, gardening, dancing, and traveling the world.
Why they chose this property
Trinity County is a nature lovers adventure dream!
Hiking:
There are two nearby trailheads which provide unfettered access into the heart of the Trinity Alps. Hobo Gulch trailhead is an easy hike through aromatic cedar forest, as it meanders along the pristine North Fork River. While Canyon Creek is arguably the most scenic trail in all of the Trinity County as it climbs into the granite heart of the Alps, boasting cascades of waterfalls, swimming holes, old growth forests, and two glacial-carved lakes encircled by craggy white granite and 9,000' peaks.
River Time:
When you are ready to cool off or to go "catch the big one", the river is only a few minutes away.
From the cabin you will have access to some of the most coveted swimming and fishing holes in all of Trinity County. There is even a giant rope swing! All within 5 - 15 minutes drive from the front door.
Fishing & Hunting:
Fall-run salmon are a main attraction for visitors to the Trinity River. Ask about referrals to our seasoned local fishing guides! The cabin is also in an ideal location for hunters with its direct access to the Wilderness and National Forest, which is teaming with healthy white-tail deer and other game!
Boating:
Some of the best whitewater boating in Northern California is right down the road. With boating options from class 1 - 5 , there is something for everyone! The most popular and family friendly option is the Pigeon Point run, a super fun splashy ride with a few big drops, that is appropriate for ages 5+ , while still being exhilarating for the adults too! Prefer a peaceful float? Enjoy a smooth ride with a few ripples in Junction City. Or if you are a strong experienced boater consider the world-renowned Burnt Ranch Gorge class-5 run.
Mountain Biking:
The nearby Weaverville Basin trail system offers roughly 50 miles of single-track trails through biologically diverse terrain, including historic mining sites, riparian zones, wetlands, and old growth forests.
What makes this property unique
The Trinity Alps encompass a 525,00 acre mountain wilderness. Here you will find your sturdy and efficient A-frame cabin confidently nestled into the Southern folds of this majestic setting. First homesteaded over 130 years ago during the CA Gold Rush, this one-of-a-kind rental is secluded from all human development. It is an ultimate untamed mountain experience yet outfitted with every modern amenity.
The cabin is equipped with every modern comfort including A/C, wood stove, backup generator, full kitchen, two bathrooms with tubs, hot water, satellite internet/wifi, apple smart tv, and on-grid utility power! The entire property is irrigated with pure snow-fed spring water from our own private source. (Ask us about a soak in our intimate wood-fired hot tub for an extra fee).
Be prepared for the best sleep of your life in the deep quiet of nature. Both upstairs bedrooms feature open beam ceilings and vaulted picture windows, offering clear unobstructed views of the surrounding forest. The only light coming in through the windows at night will be the light of the Milky Way and the moon. During the warm months (May - October) you may also be able to request two additional outside beds.
Outside you will find sprawling green lawns, vibrant ornamental flowers, a peaceful lily pond, and vibrant veggie garden. We provide several yard games like badminton and bocci ball, and there is even a trampoline for the kids! You can relax on the comfy patio couches under the shade tree or share a meal at the picnic table.
Encircling the yard is an endless enchanted forest filled with rare flora and fauna. You might find a parade of mountain wildflowers, a gently flowing stream, golden blankets of Fall leaves, softly falling snowflakes, or encounters with some of the most beautiful creatures of Northern California including rare migrant song birds, owls, eagles, bears, white tailed deer, tree frogs and salamanders, dragonflies or swirling clouds of newly hatched butterflies.
