Garden Home City of Durango Permit #14-098

Our Garden Home Guesthouse is a beautiful 1800 square foot, three bedroom two and a half bath house on West 3rd Avenue. Take a short walk to dinner downtown, or enjoy the extensive River Trail that runs along the banks of the Animas just a few blocks from the house. Or just sit on the classic front porch overlooking this quiet old-town Avenue neighborhood lined with huge trees. Feel good about taking a green vacation… this house has a 4.5 KW PV solar system providing 100% of the electricity used on the property!

Garden Home is decorated in a serene garden style with high quality furnishings and original artwork. There is a full kitchen gas range and oven, kitchen aid dishwasher, plenty of dishes and pots and pans to cook a holiday meal for your family. All the little things like coffee, oil, and spices are there to make you feel at home. Also a full sized washer and dryer for your use with supplies provided. Two beautiful bedrooms upstairs have high-end queen sized mattresses for a comfortable nights sleep. There are down comforters and lots of extra towels and linens.

Your kids and dogs will have a blast exploring the nature trail up the back hill, safely fenced in.

It is a 30-minute drive to Purgatory (DMR) where you can ski some of Colorado’s best. Or just stay in and make popcorn and take advantage of our comfy leather furniture, DVD Collection, LCD TV with Dish and small library of great books, and of course Wireless High Speed Internet. The downstairs has vaulted ceilings and slate tile floors with in floor heat for your winter comfort. The dining room has a glass door that opens up to a private courtyard covered with a trellis, a great place to have a romantic dinner al fresco.

We are local and have lived in Durango for a long time, so can help you plan your perfect downtown Durango vacation.

Unique and Homey Stay
We had an amazing stay here in Durango for 3 nights- the house is fully stocked with anything you could need (including basic condiments and spices in the kitchen which is a huge plus). Holly was very welcoming and made the check-in process a breeze. Would absolutely recommend staying here, I hope to again in the future!

A home away from home
We really felt this way the last couple times we stayed here. My family is so comfortable here, we can ride bikes to animas trail and downtown. It's a super cozy yet ample room my family of 4. We love sitting on the front porch!

Family weekend away
Our family of 4 came out for a quick weekend retreat to relax and enjoy Durango’s activities. This house was the perfect location for both downtown restaurants and shops as well as the hot springs. The neighborhood was quiet, the house was roomy and the yard was perfect for letting our dogs out in the cold alone. We will definitely come back!

Home away from Home
This property had everything we could want. Close walking proximity to downtown Durango, all the cooking essentials, extremely comfortable beds and pillows, everything basically provided. All you need to bring is yourself and a sense of adventure. We truly enjoyed sitting on the front porch each morning having our coffee, taking in the fresh air. The covered patio with table and grill offered a nice outside escape, then you discover a 2nd patio up a flight of stairs. The time of year (Feb) wasn't the best time to see the garden plants, but you could imagine how beautiful it would be when everything was in full bloom! Great house - loved spending time there.

Very nice stay. The house has a well stocked kitchen, mini splits for staying comfortable, and comfy beds. Close to downtown while off the main road means quiet mornings on the porch.

Great House
The property was wonderful. It’s a little outdated and needs a bit of sprucing up, but it was clean and very functional. The bed in the master was very comfortable. It actually has three bedrooms, not two. We appreciated the air conditioning in the bedrooms and in the house as we know, Durango can get hot sometimes. It’s a little bit of a walk to a downtown, but some of our group had no problem with it. The host was wonderful to work with. She was very accommodating to our needs.

Charming House, Easy Walking Distance
Exactly what we were looking for! This was close to Purgatory ski resort (30 min), and it was also central enough in town that we could walk to some breweries and restaurants. Our dogs liked walking down to the river. The kitchen was incredibly well-stocked with supplies, and the home was cozy and welcoming. We hope to be back!

Great home backyard needs work
Clean home, nice neighborhood. The only reason I gave 4 stars is the backyard. Our dog struggled on the hillside/slope that is the backyard. She got many pokes and scrapes from the overgrowth on the hill. Owner did say they are getting the backyard landscaped soon. Would not return with our dog.

Great Stay with family over Christmas
We enjoyed our stay in Durango at the Garden Home over Christmas 2024. The house is very well appointed. It's 3 bedrooms, one Master with a King bed and an attached bathroom - very small shower and no tub and then next to the Master - two bedrooms - both with Queens and a bathroom with shower/tub. The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking our meals. It took us a bit of time to figure out the heating situation so ask Holly if you need tips. I will say - the bed in the master was very firm. I realize mattresses are very personal so this is just a note so you are aware. We brought our large dogs (both 85 pounds each) and they loved the backyard but keep in mind, it is very steep with levels and not sturdy as the rocks kept sliding down as the dogs were climbing. I mention this only to say if you are looking for a flat fenced in yard - this not it. It's about a mile walk to main street...we did it multiple times a day. It's also pretty close to some trails. The shops on main street are cute and we loved Durango Coffee, Chimayo, Carvers Brewery and the Himalayan Kitchen. We wanted to try James Ranch (not on Main) but ran out of time. Holly is a great host and available to answer questions.

*!* Review of another of the renters listings in Durango *!*
I was contacted by the owner that the property was going to be worked on and if we wanted to shift to another of their properties in Durango, Casa Luna. VrBo will not let me review the place we stayed. It's a bit farther out of town (~10m) but an amazing place. Short version: 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, hide-a-bed. tons of space for visiting and eating. The Casa Luna portion is the ground floor that can support a large family or two families staying at one time. It is a nice place, clean and setup well. The extra drive out of town it worth it for the stars. Amazing night and day views of farm country. This property will definitely be added to my families list of favorites in the area. My kids are stompers they LOVE the sound of their little feet hitting the floor... so it's worth mentioning that it is a raised floor so I'm sure the guests above us heard my stompers. We heard them (foot steps, not voices). It's not loud, very similar to an apartment volume. Google maps got us there without problem; If you are visual kind of driver it's probably worth getting there or, at least stopping by in the day time. So if you come in at night you are more familiar with the drive ways.

Drip, Drip, Drip
Was disappointed that when we got to the property at 5:30PM there were 2 grown men in the house working on air-conditioning. I would have preferred we were told they would be there given I had 2 teenage daughters with me. There were a lot of bugs in the house. Lastly, the air conditioner was dripping into a pan and my wife couldn't sleep so she had to go downstairs and sleep on the couch while we were staying here. We would not come back.

Lovely home! Excellent proximity to river and more
Our family of 4 stayed in the Garden Home for a few weeks. It was clean, comfortable and cozy. The neighborhood is quiet and safe. The house is located very conveniently for reaching mountain bike trails (test track or Star Wars), the public library, recreation center, skateboard park, neighborhood elementary school with a great playground, the river trail, and less than a mile from downtown (main street). The house is well equipped with everything you will need. Highly recommend for families!

Enjoyed our stay in this nice property.
Our stay in this property was very comfortable. The house is very nice. Just about every detail to make our stay good was taken care of. The kitchen is very well stocked with pots, pans, utensils, as well as some food items, like coffee, sugar, herbs and spices, cooking oil, etc. etc. in the pantry. The beds and furniture are comfortable. The clothes washer and drier are new and convenient. The Wifi was easy to use and the speed was moderate. The TV, BlueRay player, and satellite system were pretty good. We really enjoyed sitting in the chairs on the front porch with friends and our dogs throughout the day. The neighborhood nice because it is older with mature trees and houses. It is pleasant and fairly quiet. We enjoyed taking morning and evening walks down to the river, main street with the restaurant and shops, the grocery store, and the off-leash dog park everyday. All are pretty close by. The paved walking path along the river is especially nice for an outing. The backyard is unique because the house is built on the side of a big hill. The yard is divided into a lower patio, then up a flight of stairs to the level of the second floor of the house is a second patio, then there is a steep hill with steps going up to the top of the lot where you can see out over the house and the neighborhood. This worked out OK for our dogs to go out to do their business, but it isn't a typical flat backyard where people and dogs and run and play. If you wonder if it will work for your needs I would recommend asking the owner for a picture of the yard since one isn't provided on the website. My only recommendation for the owner is to keep up with mowing the lawn, trimming the trees and bushes. It was a little overgrown when we arrived and gave a bad first impression. The lawn crew did mow and trim some bushes about half way through our stay. Overall we enjoy the house and the neighborhood and we would return.

A great time
There were 4 adults staying at the house and we had a great time. It was a great base of operations for day trips out of town and shopping/restaurants downtown. The house doesn't have central air, but the weather was mild enough in early June to sleep with the windows open in the guest bedroom. The house is fully equipped if you want to prepare meals versus eating out. The neighborhood is very convenient to everything.

Why they chose this property

Location to downtown Durango, the River Trail, the library, and the Recreation Center. This is the best neighborhood in Durango!

What makes this property unique

Quiet old-town neighborhood that is super safe and close to the river trail and downtown. This is a gorgeous house, very family and pet friendly, and the back yard is super private, and now totally fenced for dogs and kids. Also I love how there is an outdoor arbored patio right off the kitchen for indoor/outdoor meals and entertaining. Great Weber BBQ. The beds are new and amazingly comfortable with super nice sheets and great down blankets. Beautiful house, lots of light, great place for a family to enjoy Durango.
