A beautiful, clean, well decorated home with impeccable views of paradise!!! The hosts are beyond kind and on top of everything! The only complaint - how fast time moves when you’re at peace. Book with confidence. We will 100% return and tell others! Thank you so very much!
This was the perfect vacation. The views of the sunrise and horses were amazing. We even spotted a foal. It was my daughter’s literal dream come true. You do need a 4x4 vehicle to get there, and I’d recommend timing your trips in and out with the tides. The host was incredible and responsive, and we had no issues at all with the property. The beds were incredibly comfy.
The property and owners were amazing! A wonderful home situated “off the grid” is exactly what our family needed to unwind a little and take in the wonderful views! Love the home and the location.. can’t wait to come back!
Although we visited during a storm which was outside everyone’s control the views from the home and the location were wonderful. And even though the roads were flooded even one block inland, we were completely unaffected due to location of this house. Fast and easy communication to property owners with any questions and even checked in on us to ensure we were all okay after the storm. Loved the pool table and all the beach toy options available even though we didn’t get much of a chance to use them. Would definitely recommend to others.
What an amazing house with a beautiful view! House has everything you could possibly need. The views off of the front deck are outstanding.
We actually saw horses off the back deck! Can't wait to come back.
This was seriously the best, most relaxing vacation ever. The house was clean and smelled great when we arrived. We had four adults and six kids and there is plenty of room to spread out, no one was crowded, it was great. The dishwasher broke and Jo had a new one installed the very next day.
We saw the horses almost everyday, they come right up under the deck. Absolutely incredible and 1000% worth the 12 hour drive we had !
Our week in OBX really exceeded all expectations. Really great house; big and open with amazing views and beach access. Fun little adventure up the 4x4 beach. Would definitely return in the future. Thanks for the wonderful memories.
We loved the Salty Anchor! We stayed here on Spring Break. This was such a unique experience! The setting of the house with great views of the ocean, beautiful sunrises from the front porch and sunsets from the back porch! And the horses came right up to the house to graze which was so amazing !
Jo host was amazing with communication before and during our stay. The house was beautifully decorated and felt beachy and comfortable!
Can’t recommend this place enough!
My family and I loved our stay at this beautiful, well-maintained house. The host has done a beautiful job of thinking of all the little things to make it feel like home. We lacked for nothing during our stay.
The location is just gorgeous! Isolated yet not difficult to access. My son loved the beach driving!
We have been staying at the Salty Anchor for 5 years! Well appointed, great decor and style, the best location and views all around! Super spacious living space w games, puzzles, books, plus everything u need in the kitchen to cook!
The location of the house was amazing! The horses were the highlight of the trip! The sand was incredible. The house was spacious and very nice and tidy, clean and bright. We were unable to use the bottom floor because the air was quite musty smelling, which is a sensitivity for me personally. However I imagine the time of year is partial blame as well as a common problem with beach homes.
The ease of getting to the property and onto the beach was effortless. It’s a perfect location on Corolla. The view of the ocean from the porch was also better than many in this location. Very cute place.
We had such an amazing time! The ponies were a huge hit and being right in the beach was perfect to drive my 87 year old grandmom to her chair by the ocean so she didn’t have to walk. Even at the house we could still play in the sand and had ample room outside for games.
The best part of this house by far is it’s gorgeous views. Look out any window and you will instantly feel like you’re at the beach. The decor is very nicely done, coastal accents everywhere. My one downfall would be the cleanliness. There were crumbs on the carpets, jelly on the table. Aside from that, kitchen is nicely appointed, had everything we needed and didn’t think to bring. The “share pantry” was a nice touch, I like the concept of take something, leave something. All in all, it was a beautiful stay and we were blessed with a visit from the horses on our last day. That felt magical. Communication with the owner was always easy and she was fabulous with responding to all of my questions.
We had a great stay at this nicely kept home. We had two families in the home totaling 11 people, this house could’ve easily accommodated another family of four. Great views, 1-2 min walk to the water. Sunday-Sunday is a lifesaver on traffic. There is seating on every side of the deck and the outdoor shower is very convenient. As far as horses go we saw them 5 out of our 7 day stay, one day they even visited the house. Obviously the house is situated on 4wd beach but my wife’s Hyundai Palisade had zero issues getting to the house, just air down those tires! The only complaint our party had was the grill. It’s positioned in an area where the rear sand dune is and was nearly covered in sand when we arrived, using it and preventing sand from getting on your food is very difficult. That is literally the only complaint we had, otherwise it’s a fantastic place to stay at.
Our stay was wonderful at the Salty Anchor. Jo communicated promptly with any questions we had before and during our stay. The home was even more gorgeous and cozy than the pictures. Plenty of games, books, and videos well throughout the home. Amazing ocean views from main floor. Kids had a blast walking right out of the house and playing in the sand. The horses did come by once right next to the home. We stayed during a particularly windy week which I think may have made the dune trickier to maneuver over during exiting. Several 4x4’s missed the turn to the sand road before the house and entered over the home’s dune and got stuck. We had an Expedition and did ok, but it did take several attempts to clear. My suggestion to anyone who is unfamiliar with sand driving is definitely read up/watch some videos before going and be prepared with the necessary tools Jo mentions in the welcome packet. That being said, it was awesome to drive next to the water! Overall, an amazing home and stay. Many kind thanks to the owners for having us.

About the host
Hosted by Jo Tinker
The Salty Anchor welcomes you! My name is Jo Tinker, mother of four (two bipeds and two fur baby four-legged!). I enjoy the road less traveled to this beautiful and unique community away from the hustle of modern life. My mother had a gypsy spirit, my father was a sailor who felt one with the sea. My other half grew up boating the Virginia waterways. We met at twenty and have been together ever since. I’m told I’m quirky and opinionated. I love color in all things, clothes, flowers and sunsets! Vacations for me mean hiking, biking, climbing and swimming, also there isn’t a jigsaw I don’t love. At forty five I decided it was a good time to learn to surf- wish me luck. Jack is grounded and loving, he prefers to slow down and savor life’s moments. He can fix just about damn near anything and 80s was a decade that should be anointed in his opinion. We still dance in the kitchen! We have a son who loves swimming, hiking, a well written book and photography. He perceives the world from a different and beautiful angle. We have a daughter that adores all things equine, has a sharp wit and a fabulous sense of humor, always equipped with a good pun for me! She masters most athletic feats with ease (while I was crashing with the waves, she sailed above). We have had animals our entire relationship and are not able to tamp down the desire to pet every new dog we encounter when away from our own! Exploring and food are our passions, ice cream and beer our addictions! My hope is that one day we will have visited all the national parks, driven from coast to coast and from North Pole to south! We adore the Salty Anchor for its off the beaten path sandy environment, the ever present yet changing ocean views, the open & warm gathering space and the restful bedrooms. This is a dream that should not be hoarded, a dream that we plan to share with our loved ones. It would please us to no end to share this with your family so great memories can be created.
Why they chose this property
The view says it all. The house adds its charm, wonderful open communal space and ample dining areas. The bedrooms are not only large and comfortable but have been uniquely curated! And within a few steps, the ocean awaits, you can wave to England from the porch!
What makes this property unique
Where else can your drive on the beach to your vacation stay? Where you can explore the sand roads in search of wild ponies like Thelma and Midnight? Where you can watch the pelicans glide by and dolphins frolic?
