About this property

Romantic 18th Century Olive Mill, Pool, Terrace, Privacy

The Moulin de la Viste is a tastefully restored olive mill built in 1776. With high beamed ceilings, thick stone walls, and a central patio with original mill features it is airy, light, and cool in the summer . The Mill is simply decorated with a combination of modern and antique furniture and original artwork.

The fully fenced, terraced garden faces south with mature trees, bushes, and flowers as well as original mill troughs. There are no immediate neighbors so there is complete privacy in the garden and salt-water pool. A shady terrace by the front door is furnished for outdoor eating right above a babbling brook. There are two Weber charcoal grills and a charcoal-lighting "chimney" for outdoor cooking.

The Mill is in a rural area outside an unspoiled village on a single-lane, winding road 1.5km from the main road amid olive trees and woods and is surrounded by nature. Spend your days by the pool relaxing and reading or visit the many surrounding villages and natural sights on day trips. There are open-air markets almost every day in one of the neighboring towns.

The house is over two hundred years old and was built along a river so that the water would power the millstones that extracted olive oil. Some of those millstones can still be seen in the patio and on the terrace. The Mill's location on a river bank means that it can get damp and may need to be aired out during prolonged days of rain, such as in winter and early spring. However, the summer months are usually dry and sunny and the cool interior provides a welcome respite from the Provençal heat.

Please note that because the house is in a very rural setting, sometimes the internet breaks down and cannot be repaired immediately. If reliable internet is essential, please do not rent this house.

Every spring, as owners, we go to the Mill to get the house ready for the rental season. We complete any needed repairs, open the pool, and maintain the gardens. We are there for a month and enjoy every minute of it. The Mill is a special place for us and we want our guests to appreciate it as much as we do. Your comfort and enjoyment are our priority as we prepare the house for the summer months.

Our caretakers will meet you upon arrival. Your beds will be made and linens laid out in the bathrooms and kitchen. We suggest you have your first dinner in the nearby village of Claviers at Restaurant L'Olivier. This is what we do and it is a pleasure to be greeted by Yolande with a delicious meal prepared by her husband.

Take your meals on the terrace overlooking Le Riou as often as you can. Sip your coffee in the warmth of the morning sun. Shade for lunch is provided by an oversized umbrella and lovely trees. Dinner by the light of the setting sun is a relaxing way to end the day. Enjoy the cool evenings on the terrace listening to bird song and gazing at the enchanting Provençal night sky. Rest and rejuvenate at this special place.

PLEASE NOTE: RENTALS ARE ONLY FROM SUNDAY TO SUNDAY. If you are interested in renting the Moulin de la Viste, please include with your request a little bit of information about yourself and the other guests: who you are, where you live, why you wish to rent this house, etc. Thank you!

Old Mill near Claviers

We really enjoyed staying in the house, which has a genius loci that one could perhaps describe as Villa Malaparte at the creek (not meant to be ironic). It has a very attratctive architectural design. Anouk an Alain took great care of the house, it was a pleasure to meet them!

Beautifully restored property

Beautifully restored old mill deep in the French countryside. Loved the outdoor dining with many butterflies and even a red squirrel! Excellent large swimming pool, loved the flamingo. Communication with owner and the local caretakers speedy and helpful. Calles and Claviers nearby, very quaint small villages. Visit to Pistou land next door an absolute treat! Make sure to stop by a supermarket on way in for essentials (shampoo/olive oil etc.) Lots of critters, as warned, so be prepared! A little tired in places (eg, towels have seen many washes) and few bits of updating needed on some of the facilities.

Moulin de la Viste

We had a lovely week here, the house being in the Provencal countryside. Beautiful area and close to Claviers, Callas and Bargemon. The house itself had everything we needed and the dry riverbed at the end of the garden proved to be fascinating at night. Wild boar could be heard through the undergrowth and we saw on several occasions baby boar trotting through with their mother and a pine marten. Alain and Annick, who look after the property, were also very helpful. Highly recommended.

Wonderful stay in a beautiful house

This is a great place to stay if you're looking for a peaceful and relaxing getaway. The house is located in a beautiful setting with lots of trees so plenty of shade, and very pretty well maintained garden. The pool is a great size and perfect for cooling off on a hot day. The house is beautiful and interesting and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is very well-equipped. Nice comfortable beds. There are lots of books and board games to borrow. Alain and Annick are very friendly and helpful, and were very patient while we practiced our French. Communication with Andrew was easy and he responded quickly to questions. Loved watching the beautiful butterflies and red squirrels, and even saw a wild boar that seemed to live in the field beyond the stream. Claviers was beautiful and we had a gorgeous meal at Le Clavero. Overall, we had a great stay and would definitely recommend it to others. Hopefully we will get back one day and next time we will definitely stay for longer than a week.

Relaxing Rustic Retreat

Private and perfectly nestled in the valley we all enjoyed the beautiful pool and modern facilities mixed with glorious old olive mill. The magical (and huge) butterflies swooping into the pool were a real treat. Playing cards on the patio and eating from the very well equipped kitchen was fantastic. It had a tasteful bohemian feel with vintage games and books on hand. A gem!

Beautiful and Relaxing

I stayed here for 1 week with my family including young children. We had a fabulous relaxing time enjoying the pool and staying cool inside the lovely old house. Lots of great walks close by and very nice restaurant in the village called L’Oliviers. Well equipped house and well looked after by Alan and Annick who were also super helpful. Naturnahes Urlaubsdomizil

The vacation of a lifetime!

My wife and I chose this utterly charming converted olive mill as the destination to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. It turned out to be one of the most cherished experiences in our many years together. The setting is spectacular, overlooking a bucolic stream, with mountain views all around. The home is warm and cozy, just the right balance of rustic character and modern conveniences. Walks to the nearby village, afternoons reading by the pool, and gin-and-tonics on the patio are among our favorite memories.

Sehr angenehm

SERENITY IN THE VAR

The Moulin de la Viste was just what we had in mind in booking a place in Provence to celebrate a BIG birthday/anniversary: picturesque, tranquil and with old-world charm, but with modern amenities, including a wonderful salt-water pool. We so appreciated that the caretakers were there to take our calls as we made our way to the millhouse and greet us as we arrived. The front door opens up onto a large and light-filled great room; the kitchen/dining room is modern and is well stocked; and the bedrooms/baths are clean and comfortable. The location is great-just a short drive up to Claviers, a charming village. We had a couple of wonderful meals at a restaurant there called L’Olivier. Also, we enjoyed a variety of day trips: the Verdon Canyon (amazing); Grasse/Vence/St. Paul de Vence; St. Tropez and the brilliant blue waters of the coast. But best of all was just enjoying a relaxing day eating and chatting on the outside terrace by the brook, and jumping into the refreshing pool on hot summer afternoons! We highly recommend the Moulin.

Quiet and secluded. Very easy to relax and take it easy.

The mill was nice and as described. We thoroughly enjoyed the pool and eating al fresco with the bubbling stream in the background. It is an old building so needs airing out during the day but we slept well and really enjoyed our stay. Everything was highly organized by the owners and very easy to get to. It is situated off the main road so offers peace and quiet and the local roads are nice to walk along. The local village had a nice bakery and a couple of good restaurants.

Peace & tranquility in a rural idyll

Quiet & naturally shady, but with a well kept sunny swimming pool, La Viste has been sympathetically converted. Space has not been compromised for utility, For us the proximity of nature was all part of the experience - the climate of the Riviera with the benefits of privacy and elevation. Many thanks & hope to return, A & A.

Lovely stay in romantic renovated mill house

We fully enjoyed our one week stay in this lovely romantic and extraordinary Moulin de la Viste near Claviers. The environment is one of absolute calm and natural beauty, with beautiful medieval villages nearby (and only 1 hour to the sea, where we spent some additional days), and the house is comfortable, fresh, well decorated and fully equipped, and has a collection of table games and records to enjoy with the whole family. The pool is stunning and great fun for kids and adults. The care taker couple Alain and Annick are very friendly and organization of the trip was very easy. We would love to come again!

Beautiful place to stay

We had a lovely one week stay in this romantic renovated water mill dating from the 18th century. The place is very special, absolutely calm, in the middle of nature, with all facilities, well decorated, a stunning pool, music records, table games, and everything you need for a relaxing holiday with family. The care taker couple Alain and Annick are very sympathetic and organization of the stay through the owner is absolutely reliable and easy. Claviers is a beautiful medieval town, but there are many more places to visit, the Verdun Canyon, Lake St. Croix, Grasse, and of course the beaches of Cõte D'Azur. We would definitely rent the mill again!

A special place!

We’ve been fortunate to stay at Moulin de la Viste on two occasions – for a couple of weeks in September 2010 and for the month of August 2013. It is a secluded little oasis located on a quiet road with a babbling brook at the doorstep. With the consistently beautiful blue sky overhead it is a perfect place to relax and read by the saltwater pool which is a good size for swimming and very private. The house itself is uniquely designed with a center courtyard that welcomes light into every room. The thick stonewalls keep the house comfortably cool with no need for an air conditioner or fan – even in the high heat of summer. The owner, Tamara, is quite friendly and a pleasure to deal with as are her lovely team that care for the house and grounds. Tamara even found us a local to tutor us in French lessons during our last stay! Moulin de la Viste is a short drive to three villages where you can shop, visit the weekly markets, enjoy a café or glass of rosé and a nice meal. We would definitely recommend the Moulin for a couple looking for a quiet getaway holiday!

Beautiful historic property, very quiet & private

This is not the usual cookie cutter vacation house, it's a beautiful old olive mill that has been converted into a very comfortable home with high ceilings, an enclosed patio like in a Roman villa, and a shaded terrace overlooking a river. The large garden has olive trees and lavender, rosemary, and other typical Provencal plants. There is also a pool that affords complete privacy. The location is idyllic: tucked away at the bottom of a hill away from traffic but only a ten-minute drive from nearby villages Callas and Bargemon, or a fifteen-minute walk up the hill to Claviers village. It's extremely peaceful yet close to many attractions—a perfect base for day trips around the surrounding region. The owner is extremely helpful and quick to answer any questions. We have recommended this house to friends and are planning to go back ourselves!

Why they chose this property

It was love at first sight. The Mill is ideally located with a shady terrace right on a lovely brook, beautifully restored, simple but elegant and in good taste. There are no immediate neighbors but it is not isolated. At night, one can clearly see all the stars, a rare enough sight in our cities.

What makes this property unique

Perfect privacy and calm with a large garden.
This mill, built in 1776, is as old as the United States of America!
The village of Claviers is still unspoiled, unlike many Provencal villages which have been overrun by fancy boutiques and tourist attractions.
