Superb accommodation and countryside charms
We had the pleasure of staying for a week at Le Sommet in Paziols. This comfortable 17th century house is absolutely charming with its fragrant courtyard, as well as a lovely balcony offering unforgettable views of the surrounding vineyards and the foothills of the Pyrenees. It’s the perfect place to get away, revel in calm and quiet, and soak up the charm and ambience of rural southern France. The apartment is certainly clean and well-maintained. It is equipped with a “cook’s kitchen”, with modern appliances and conveniences, perfect to take advantage of the numerous open-air markets in neighbouring villages. The house itself, on two levels, is homey and comfortable with a mixture of modern furniture and French period pieces. We enjoyed local walks and visits to nearby historic sites, as well as just strolling around Paziols or discovering its countryside on foot or on bike. A car, however, is essential to explore further afield. While there are no restaurants in the town, a small village store (épicerie) does supply all that we needed to make meals. We will be back because there are so many more castles, hikes, wines, and restaurant meals in the immediate area to discover and enjoy.

Gorgeous property in a stunning location.
A beautiful, well-maintained home with comfortable bedrooms, gorgeous sitting areas (both outside and inside) and a newly renovated, well-appointed kitchen and dining area. There's a great store near by with everything you'd need, and lots to explore in the area. Great food and wine at every turn! If you're looking for a home to call your own for a while in a quiet French village where you can truly get a way from it all, you couldn't do any better. We fell in love with this place, and left at the end of our stay with heavy hearts!

Comfort in the heart of rural France
We spent 2 weeks in Paziols at La Sommet. The house is comfortable and clean and tucked into a quiet hillside village overlooking a valley of vineyards. The two bedrooms are on separate floors with ensuites and very private. Good for 2 couples vacationing together. The upstairs living room is spacious and has a very comfortable sectional sofa for late evening chats. The balcony off the living room is a gem. We ate almost all our meals on this balcony with an amazing view over the valley and to the hills beyond. Although the sunsets were behind us, their reflections on the rocky slopes and the beautiful skies were wondrous. The perfect way to end a day. The first floor has a well equipped kitchen and a large dining table with a little outside cafe table where the morning sun is warm. From the house, we travelled to four Cathar Castels including Carcasonne, several great swimming gorges and enjoyed endless kilometres of back roads on our mountain bikes through the valley and beyond. The local markets are great and the local winery produces excellent wines with a personal touch. Susan left us a binder with recommendations for local restaurants and we enjoyed many of them. A great vacation. We hope to return someday.

Merci!

Fabulous French Country Charm
I spent 2 weeks at Le Serre in the village of Paziols and it was fabulous! The weather was amazing for April. Le Sommet is very spacious with two separate bedrooms with ensuites, the kitchen/dining area and the loft-style living area with walkout to a terrace that has an amazing view over the village and the valley. L'Ecurie studio is very quaint with double French doors opening to the courtyard and gardens. Paziols is a quiet little village that offers the necessary amenities (café, restaurant, convenience store) and is well situated to explore the foothills of the Pyrenees, the many local vineyards and the beaches of the Mediterranean. It was only a short drive to a great outdoor market in Ceret where you could buy anything from fresh fruit and vegetables, pottery, clothes, baskets, soaps, etc. The location is also great for day trips to see Cathar Castles such as Peyrepertuse and Queribus, visit the walled city of Carcassonne or to visit beautiful seaside ports in Spain. There is also great biking routes and scenic hiking through the valley and around the many vineyards. And there is plenty of great wines to choose from!! Le Serre offered all the comforts needed and it was always great ending the day with a glass of wine on the terrace. I will definitely be coming back!

Most parts were really good....
This was a tough one to review. When we arrived, unfortunately the house was really not very clean. We spent the first evening doing a thorough clean. Then we went upstairs and saw the fabulous view! Incredible!! On the whole, here were the good points: the view was truly outstanding. The decorating was absolutely lovely. The appliances were all new and easy to use. The beds and furniture are really comfortable The town is very quaint and the people in it were very approachable. Only two bad notes for me. The cleaning, which we told Susan about and I think it will definitely be changed for the next guests. Also, to say the house is renovated is a stretch. The bathrooms are very old and need to be updated. The kitchen cabinets need work and the plaster repair is a little on the funky side. However, the view is so spectacular, 3 stars, almost 4!

Complete immersion in the French culture
My husband and I have stayed at Le Sommet, the largest apartment of Le Serre for 7 days in 2012 & 10 days in 2014. Le Serre offers the choice of 3 accommodations depending on your budget and needs. Le Sommet is a very roomy, comfortable & well appointed apartment. It is a blend of modern conveniences and rustic French country charm. The view from the upper terrace is magnificent. To enjoy a nibble and a glass of wine at sunset overlooking the foothills of the Pyrenesse and castle ruins is the best way to end a busy day. Le Serre is a very peaceful, relaxing and safe accommodation. It is a well located base to explore the varied and amazing places located in the area. Be prepared to do a lot of mountain driving. Paziols is a tiny ( approx. 275 people), very French village with basic yet adequate services. The residents of Paziols are friendly and kind if you make the effort to engage them. Otherwise they carry on their daily activities. The area around Paziols has a vast amount of interesting places to visit and activities for all ages. It is not a commercialized tourist area. You must do your research to find the hidden gems that abound here. There are numerous tourist books and brochures at Le Serre to refer to and the journal from other Le Serre visitors is an excellent source of information. We would highly recommend a stay at Le Serre in Paziols. We hope to return again because it seems like a second home to us.

Great French Countryside vacation
My husband and I rented the Sommet for 2 weeks in the early fall of 2014. After a long drive from Paris were were glad to have arrived. This large apartment has every thing you need to be comfortable during your stay. The second floor living room and balcony were the best, great for sunrises and sunsets over looking the small town of Pazoils and vineyards. A complete kitchen with clothes washer and dishwasher make it feel like home. The local market is only a few minutes walk away with all the basic supplies as well a local visiting venders such as butcher, dairy producer, produce and pizza truck. It was a great base for visiting the Cathar castles, wineries and the Mediterranean sea. The reservation process was simple and easy with ALL our questions being answered before arrival. A great place to experience local french life at a relaxing pace ! Would highly recommend this property .

If you love history...
This property was well equipped and very comfortable. The description was accurate, and the photos reflected the rental's appearance and amenities. The owner was most helpful in making recommendations, and the binder provided excellent information. As a base for exploring Cathar ruins, and experiencing village life in rural France, it was ideal. The village was charming! We were thrilled to discover the Roman ruins nearby -- the bridge in the village, the Roman distance marker outside the village, and the still functioning aquaduct near Asignan. After our daily explorations, relaxing with wine and cheese on the balcony, with the chattering swallows swooping around us, was delightful. Highly recommended!

Winter stay in Paziols
We were in France looking to purchase a holiday rental ourselves so chose Paziols for it's central location in Langued'oc. I am very happy to say that we decided on Le Sommet. This clean and spacious home has retained its' rustic charm while having all the amenities. The rooms are nicely furnished and decorated and the beds are very comfortable, The view from the deck off the living room is breathtaking and a wonderful spot for a sunny lunch or for a glass of wine while enjoying the evening sunset with the Cathar castle in the distance. We took daily walks through the countryside beside the vinyards and stream and found the epicerie very convenient for picking up the odd grocery item or baguette. Great for a quiet getaway and lots of places to hike and bike. Most sights and beaches are within an hours drive. The photos of the site are accurate, and the owner was very accommodating in organizing our arrival and stay with the housekeeper and also kept in touch by e-mail during our visit. Yes, we would definitely recommend this property!

Wonderful cycling vacation!
We had a wonderful week-long stay at this lovely apartment in Paziols in mid-October. The apartment was spacious, clean and comfortable for 2 couples with a lovely deck overlooking the entire valley. This small ancient village was such a treasure, tucked in amongst the foothills of the Pyrenees. It was well situated for a scenic drive (or even a cycle!) on the well paved, quiet roads to the ruins of 5 Cathar Castles. Nearby as well were many other beautiful French villages offering fine dining, museums, wineries, hiking and cultural experiences. The ocean was an easy day trip and we even lunched in Spain! The owners were very helpful, accessible and knowledgable about the area. We highly recommend this spot and we do hope to return to experience another season. L and J (Toronto)

Family Vacation in Paziols
Our family spent two fantastic weeks at Le Sommet in August of 2009. We were a group of two adults and four teenagers and everyone had a great time. The local swimming hole was a big hit when the weather was hot, and we also took several day trips to the beach. We cycled along the tow path of the Canal du Midi, explored all the Cathar castles, visited the Dali Museum in Spain, and ate one of the best meals we've ever had in a local winery. The village is friendly and the views from the house are spectacular. Accommodations are lovely in the well-equipped, beautifully decorated apartment. We got to know the local pub/cafe owner, the local grocer, as well as the man in the pizza bus, and the butcher's bus. The summer village fete was a fun night. All in all we felt we were really living the French dream, and wouldn't hesitate to return. Jane & Marc

a very charming village and a super place to stay
I stayed at La Serre for two weeks during october 2010 and it was absolutely charming. I had rented L'Ecurie, that opened in the close courtyard with a garden where we ate three meals a day during our first week. I adored the village of Paziols, small, with one cafe/resto, surrounded with hills and vineyards. We swam in the river, played tennis in the village tennis court, bought our food from the local butcher who came once a week with his truck just like the fisherman and the pastry woman did. We bought our wine in the village vineyard, and in the village of Tuchan, we discovered Le Domaine Rolland where the owner showed us how to produce wine, we tasted them all and decided to buy from him. Louis is a french man that produces his wine with a contagious passion; we walked all around the mountains and came back each day for our night meal "at home". We loved the apt, very comfortable with a kitchen very well equipped. The village is close to Perpignan, Collioure, Narbonne, Carcassonne, Mirepoix and all the Languedoc beaches. We drove 3000 k. all over the area, going to local morning markets in a different village each day. I recommend this place and will definitively go back. The owners were fantastic, helpful and their cleaning lady became a friend. Everyone in this village is kind, very french with their welcoming Bonjour Mesdames each morning. I recommend going to Perpignan airport which is only 45 min. driving. The place was very clean, beds so good, and we loved having a bottle of wine on the table upon arrival, a nice touch. Our biggest coup de coeur was the small village of Mirepoix, and le defile de St-Martin en Lys. Dont miss, 5 min from Paziols, Le Musee Europeen de la Prehistoire in Tautavel, a must to learn about the beginning of man in the area, 450,000 years ago and visit all the Chateau Cathars easily accessible from Paziols.I was very lucky to find this place on internet and will recommend it to my friends going to the South of France next year.

We are Susan Martin and Adrian Hussey, Canadian owners of La Serre. We are retired and live in Owen Sound, Canada. We spend as much time as possible visiting our vacation property in France. We love to travel, enjoy fine dining, wine tasting and immersing ourselves in the local French culture. We also enjoy trips to Spain which is only an hour away! We both love to explore the region via mountain bike or hiking and often stop at a local village for lunch.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with this part of France as it is stunningly beautiful, off the typical tourist radar and has lots to see and do. It is also a prime grape growing region, home to many small vintners who make really good, reasonably priced wine. The people in our small town of Paziols are very friendly and welcoming. The view from our terrace is the best in town! The area is quiet and peaceful. We like to be physically active and there is lots of hiking, cycling, swimming in the local rivers and lovely Mediterranean beaches. It is a great part of the world for bird watching. For excitement, it is only an hour's drive away to Spain, 1 hour to Figureres, 1.5 hours to Girona, 2.5 hours to Barcelona. Toulouse is 2 hours drive, Montpellier 1.5 hours, Narbonne and Carcassone one hour's drive and Perpignan 45 minutes drive.

What makes this property unique

The village of Paziols is a rustic, charming, hillside village which encourages a laid-back lifestyle and boasts plenty of sunshine in which visitors can enjoy the stunning surroundings and cool off in the local swimming hole. The village is well placed for exploring the beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean, taking a day trip to Spain, hiking, or discovering the fascinating history of the Cathars. Superb local restaurants explore fresh regional cuisine to accompany the region's award-winning wines.
