About this property
Art Deco Dream Cottage in the Heart of Oakland
Nestled amidst a grove of live oaks and redwoods near the vibrant heart of Oakland, this 1920s cottage retains its historic charm but has enough modern amenities to meet the needs of any 21st century traveler. Set up for both work and play, the home boasts four bedrooms with adjacent or ensuite bathrooms. The master bedroom with walk-in closet boasts a romantic Juliet balcony overlooking the large backyard. Bedroom 2 and 3 contain large IKEA corner-style desks, one with a stand-up desk. The souterrain bedroom area contains a very comfortable sleeper sofa, large-screen TV and Nordic Track to keep in shape while you're on the road.
A luxurious two-level back deck with lawn and flagstone patio invites outdoor parties from April to October and an expansive backyard with potting shed and veggie/fruit garden allows your inner farmer to thrive. The kitchen is thoroughly re-done with bay window seating (where you can watch hummingbirds feed), double sinks, kitchen island, and toaster and warming ovens. Two bicycles in the garage allow travel on our bike, child and dog-friendly street -- down to the Saturday farmer's market or up into the scenic Oakland Hills.
One caveat to your stay here is that the home comes with two cats, Charlie and Django. They prefer the outdoors and will spend most of their time there. They have automatic food and water dispensers (filled before each stay), and their garage-level litter box (which they have access to with cat doors) is taken care of by a service. People with mild cat allergies are fine in the house.

About the host
Your host
Outdoors-lover, mother of two grown children and freelance science journalist focused on climate change issues. I travel for work and am happy to share my home with those needing a quiet and comfortable refuge at the end of a fun day! The photo is of me enjoying an outdoor party with friends on my deck last year :)
Why they chose this property
This quiet neighborhood is in the desirable Grand Lake section of Oakland. The street itself is lovely for a good power walk, or you can venture a bit farther to Merritt Lake, with pedestrian and cycling paths that circle the lake. Nearby Lakeshore and Grand Avenues contain a potpourri of shops, pubs, fabulous restaurants and the locally-beloved 1920s Grand Lake Theater.
