Renovated Mexican Modernist Gem with Chef's Kitchen in Centro
Our house is an oasis in Oaxaca. It features pale terrazzo floors, lots of light and a wall of windows in the living/dining space that looks out onto the garden. It has 3 bedrooms in the main house as well as an office with a comfy daybed and a separate casita.
It's newly renovated by a professional designer. There's a real chef's kitchen. It's filled with art, custom designed furniture and vintage finds. Outside there’s an edible garden, shaded dining area and a comfy hammock.

This is an older house that was renovated about 15 years ago. It’s quite charming and comfortable with plenty of room for up to 6. Best features: good location within 15 minutes of centro but not right in the middle of it; a lovely garden and picnic area; a very usable kitchen with a good stove; a separate study where you can work privately; regular cleaning services which is nice when you have a larger group; and excellent communication with and guidance for visitors from the owner and house manager. The only negative is noise from the busy road nearby and the occasional plane landing overhead. I’d highly recommend a stay at this house. We were there a month and it was a really great experience. Thanks, Stellah!
We stayed in Stellah’s home for a week over Christmas and it was truly the perfect place. Stellah was so wonderful with giving us recommendations of things to do and places to eat. The home is spacious with great design, a fully stocked kitchen, and a beautiful back yard. Her house manager was so kind and helpful as well. We truly felt at home and will definitely be back to stay again.
If you are reading this and Stellah’s place is available, book it. Don’t think about it, just do it. We spent 6 nights at Stellah’s and had a fabulous time and we were never less than delighted. The house is lovely. Stellah has absolutely amazing taste and you can see it everywhere in her stunning home. It is possibly better in real life than in the photographs, From the living area to the bedrooms to the outdoor garden/seating area there is not a single thing that hit a wrong note. Asu the housekeeper is such a lovely woman and so welcoming (we didn’t have time to do a tortilla workshop with her but if you do have the time you absolutely should!) and Stellah is an amazing host. Quick to answer any questions and she has tons of advice. If your group are walkers the house is absolutely close enough to get everywhere all over the city, and if you aren’t able to walk as much car service to Stellah’s isn’t expensive at all. Take my advice and book this place without any qualms.
Perfect artistic home close to city center, excellent host!
This was the best place we could have chosen to stay & we will be back! Stellah’s home is absolutely beautiful, a perfect respite from the busy city while still being a 10-20 min walk from everything we wanted to do in the city center. 4 of us were visiting to celebrate my birthday, & Stellah was an incredible host, offered food & dancing suggestions, & connected us to local artists (we even hired her friend to capture the occasion with a photoshoot on 35mm!) She even helped find a driver to & from the airport. But by far the most wonderful part of the house was Asu, the housekeeper. She was so kind, friendly, & welcoming, & we negotiated separately to have her come cook breakfast a few times. My friends even spoke with her privately & arranged for her to bring a surprise cake, sparklers, flowers, & candles. She made her favorite mole on the celebratory day, which we asked her to eat with us as she had stolen our hearts by that point. Stellah’s home is so spacious & relaxing, peppered with Oaxacan art, and plenty of kitchen amenities. It stays cool & bright, tons of natural light, & the private office is perfect for getting a little work done- it would be ideal for a creative retreat. The patio as well is gorgeous, with plenty of herbs and fragrant plants, lovely to chat and have a drink in the evenings. As Oaxaca is in a water crisis, we tried to conserve & be kind- but if you are wanting a more luxurious experience, you might be better staying in a hotel or near the ocean.

About the host
Hosted by Stellah De Ville
I grew up in Australia and lived for many years between New York and San Francisco. I'm an Interior Designer/Artist/Gallerist with a passion for travel, food & wine. Renovating houses is something we really enjoy and our house in Oaxaca was a real labor of love! It features local marble, lots of handmade textiles made with natural fibers/dyes and many artworks created by friends.
Why they chose this property
Centro is a wonderful area, full of ancient history and inspiring architecture. Our house is on a small dead end privada and is a 5 min walk from our favorite daily farmers market and a short walk to almost all of Oaxaca's famous sights!
What makes this property unique
The chef's kitchen, the edible garden and outdoor dining area make our house unique. The house also features a multi-stage water filtration system so the filtered water tap is safe for drinking and the water for the shower is softer on hair and skin. Organic mattresses and bedding are a lovely feature too :).
