About this property

Ballindooley Castle 10 minutes to Galway City

Ballindooley Castle is a historic fortress located in County Galway, Ireland. It is a striking example of a medieval tower house, a type of fortified dwelling commonly constructed by Irish nobility during the 15th and 16th centuries.

The castle stands proudly amidst a picturesque landscape, surrounded by lush greenery and rolling hills. Its architecture showcases a rectangular structure with robust stone walls, small windows, murder holes, a dungeon, and defensive battlements. These design features reflect the castle's primary purpose of providing protection and security during a tumultuous era.

Inside Ballindooley Castle, visitors would find multiple floors connected by a spiral staircase that winds its way up through the core of the building. The interior is characterized by sturdy stone walls, vaulted ceilings, and remnants of original architectural elements, capturing the essence of its historical significance.

The castle's entrance is guarded by a formidable wooden door, leading to a ground-level hall that served as a communal area for daily activities. As one ascends the spiral staircase, various rooms would be discovered on different levels, including bedrooms, a great hall for dining and entertainment, a kitchen, and potentially a chapel.

Ballindooley Castle boasts a rich and captivating history. It has borne witness to power struggles, withstood sieges, and provided shelter for numerous noble families throughout the centuries. Within its walls, countless stories and secrets lie hidden, waiting to be discovered.

While Ballindooley Castle has undergone restoration and preservation efforts over time, it still retains its medieval charm and serves as a remarkable testament to the architectural expertise of its era.

Awesome Castle Experience
Great communication with the host who gave us a tour and the history of the castle. The Castle has lots of steps naturally, but all of the levels are incredible. The renovated bathroom and shower was amazing. Great location near Galway with lots of places to eat.

Ballindooley castle stay
Our family reunion of 6 stayed here for a week and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this amazing 450 year old Tower. We had meals and played games in the great room, viewed the sunsets from the rooftop ramparts and generally lived like the Royal family (minus the servants of course). It served as an unforgettable and spectacular setting for a long overdue reunion for our family. We would return in a heartbeat.

Amazing experience
Barry was an amazing host. When we arrived he gave us a tour to show us the smaller details of the property and explain some of the history - we loved the tour. The experience was so much fun. The property was well stocked with everything you need, kitchen was well stocked to host a dinner. Bathroom and laundry supplies were there to use. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Galway and recommend Ballindooley to anyone looking for a unique experience.

Experience of a lifetime!
Staying at this Castle was a highlight of our trip. It has been updated with comforts as much as possible. We had a nice warm stay. This is a true standing castle rich with history. Perfectly located outside galway. Barry was an excellent and resposive host. I think he was just as exciting for us as we were to stay. I omly dinged cleanliness because its an ancient castle. If dust in the corners isn't expected, this is not the place for you. Book It!
