About this property

Artful DC Home - Enjoy Backyard - 16th St. Heights

Bright, charming, artful home on bus line leading directly to monuments & museums. You will love this place because it is our home (we only rent it a few weeks of the year when we are away). It's full of character and has everything you could need. Gourmet kitchen and rustic farm table. Expansive yard with fire pit, hammock, and outdoor dining area. Central AC. Free off-street parking. 1 block from trendy neighborhood bar, restaurant, and farmer's market.

The space
Enjoy Washington, DC in this charming, open concept, single family row house next to a bus line leading straight to the National Mall with its monuments and museums. Large back yard with shaded outdoor dining area for 6, large Weber grill, fire pit with Adirondack chairs, and a hammock. Off street parking for one car in back. 3 bedrooms, comfortably sleeps 7 in beds, 8 with one on a couch.

This 1916 row house is well-appointed with African and Asian accents and everything you need to enjoy your stay in style.

Main Floor: The kitchen is equipped with a gas range and dishwasher, and is fully stocked with dishes and glassware (we love to cook). We only rent this portion of our house when we are away -- otherwise it's our primary residence -- so you'll find the house full of character, stories, and all the pots and pans you might need to whip up a big dinner! The dining room table seats 8 easily at a beautiful wooden farm table made from our old family barn. Our living room on the main floor is a stunning place to curl up on the deep indigo sofa with a book and enjoy all the artwork and handicrafts from our world travels. And the front porch with comfy chairs or the outdoor, shaded dining area in the backyard are perfect for enjoying morning coffee or evening cocktails. There is a full bathroom behind the kitchen, next to the French doors leading to the backyard.

Upstairs:
Room 1 – King Size Master with ensuite, newly renovated bathroom. Overlooks trees and the backyard, so is very quiet.
Room 2 – This room has a full bed and a single on top, as bunkbeds.
Room 3 – This family TV room features a deep, large couch with a huge ottoman. Bedding can be provided, if you plan to have someone in your party sleep here.

Finished Basement Guest Suite:
The lower level features a bright, charming, artful 1-bedroom guest suite with its own kitchenette, full bath, large screen TV, Bluetooth speaker, work station, laundry, refrigerator, and Central Air. Most of the year, when we are living at home in the top two floors, we rent the finished basement as a separate listing here on Airbnb.

Guest access
You have access to the entire house. The garage in the backyard is locked and not available to our guests.

Other things to note
Because we only rent our home infrequently, when we're away on vacation, you will find that our closets contain our clothing and effects. We will make an effort to clear some dresser drawers for you to store some of your clothes.

About the host

Host profile image
I’m a 48 year old, former Peace Corps Volunteer who lived near Timbuktu in Mali, photographer, love antiques and old signs, grew up on a farm in Vermont, work for an international development non-profit. Speak French, un poquito Spanish, and Dogon. Love to travel and go camping with our 10-yr-old son. We've had some phenomenal family trips to Madagascar, Morocco, Guadeloupe, Iceland, and Finland. Before we became parents, my husband and I traveled around India, China, Uganda, Italy, Croatia, Belize, Peru, Vermont and West Virginia. My husband was born in England and has Caribbean island roots. He lived in Paris for 5 years before moving to DC, cooks amazing ribs and stirs up a mean cocktail! We have been Airbnb hosts since 2007 everywhere we've lived and have stayed with Airbnb hosts in Madagascar, Paris, Guadeloupe, Rome, Montreal, Netherlands, Savannah, Denver, and rural Virginia. Hosting allows us to live vicariously through your travels when we’re right here at home. Welcome!

Why they chose this property

The neighborhood: We are in the 16th Street Heights neighborhood, backing onto a very quiet street, one block from a city park, community gardens, and recreation center/playground. You can walk 1 block to our corner store and cafe, which has all the essentials, beer/wine, as well as strong Ethiopian coffee and breakfast sandwiches. Across from the corner store is Moreland's Tavern, our favorite local bar/restaurant (more below). We're only 3 blocks from 16th Street, where you'll find access to massive Rock Creek Park and its biking and hiking trails. 2 blocks away is a WalMart Supercenter for anything you need, including groceries! 5 min. walk to the Kennedy Street Corridor, where you'll find Anxo Cidery and Tasting Room (cool space with huge wood casks and yummy Spanish tapas), our community scoop shop Everyday Sundae, and Soups Up, where you'll find gourmet soups and sandwiches. Local hangouts: Moreland's Tavern, a block from home, is our go-to spot for great food and a friendly crowd. It's a cozy gastropub with exposed brick walls and a great bar. Crown Bakery is another walkable spot for authentic Caribbean takeout. We are equidistant (5 min. drive/10 min by bus) from Central Petworth and Takoma Park – two very hip neighborhoods with more excellent restaurants, bars, and farmers markets. We will leave a welcome guide with suggestions, including in Takoma Park: Busboys & Poets and farm-to-table Republic; and in Petworth: Timber Pizza, Cinder BBQ, and a great new Ramen spot, Menya Hozaki. Here for classic DC tourism?: Forget the pricey hotel, save tons of money, and live like a local in your own beautiful home, park at the nearby metro and be downtown in 20 minutes. Or walk one block in either direction and take one of 3 bus lines to the National Mall, monuments, and museums in a straight shot!

What makes this property unique

Our property is very unique for having such a large outdoor living space in this part of DC and for its carefully curated, artful decor. The basement suite with its own kitchenette, TV, and bathroom creates an ideal solution for two families renting together or for a multi-generational trip where grandparents can enjoy the privacy of the basement suite while the grandkids make noise two floors above :-) The farmer's market and beloved neighborhood bistro "Moreland's Tavern" only a block away. Buses straight to the museums. We love our home and neighborhood.
