About the host
Hosted by Melody Gardner
I grew up in Black Mountain. Back in the day we only had one red light and no breweries:) Now, this little town boasts of small businesses of all kinds and entertainment that rivals many big cities. I left for college and my career that included volunteering and serving others. After being away for thirty-seven years, I cam back to help support my aging parents. My grandmother left me several houses, but I was not sure what I would do with them since I worked 50+ hours each week. After Covid, my mind began to pivot from my crazy busy career to a more serene pace. Hence, seasonal rentals! Yes, renovating the homes took a few years, but the work was worth it. I am eager to host (serve) my guests, making their visit to the region extra special.
Why they chose this property
Berta's cottage is unique because it is easily accessible from I-40. There is only one street that takes you to either Black Mountain or Asheville so you can't get lost:) The home is decorated and supplied with guests in mind. The large porch allows you to stargaze at night. While the home is cozy and small, the porch allows you to have a few guests over for dinner or a movie without feeling crowded.
What makes this property unique
Berta's cottage was my grandparents first home. Builders in the late 50s would not build them a home or finance it, so they built it themselves with cash. When we were renovating it to be a home away from home for guests visiting the are, my grandmother had dementia. However, she remembered her first home enough to appreciate the improvements made. The smile on her face was our sign that she was pleased with what we were doing with her property.
