About this property
Charming Island Cabin with Breathtaking Coastal Waterfront--Immerse in Serenity
Relax and enjoy island life at Red Ledge Cabin. Find serenity on our 3-acre waterfront retreat. Unplug from stress at this cozy, rustic, well-equipped summer cabin with picturesque views of the ocean harbor and coastal Maine wildlife. Buy fresh lobster and clams at T.I.M.S. (island market) approximately 3 blocks away. Wi-Fi is now available at our cabin or go to the island Library. More importantly, go outside to hike, visit our historic lighthouse, swim at the quarry, nap in our hammock, sit on our granite bench by the ocean, visit island museums, and explore island beaches.
On the main level of our cabin is the living and eating area, wood stove, kitchen, bathroom and utility room. There is a common sleeping loft with two queen beds and one twin bed, accessed by a sturdy ladder with handrails. There is also a queen-sized pull-out couch in the main room. There are books, playing cards, board games, CD's, DVD's, and puzzles, plus you can play Buoy Golf, a family favorite. Position buoys around the property and use putting irons and whiffle gold balls to chip your ball to hit each buoy. There's also a low deck at ground level and a high deck, which is ideal for fantastic views down harbor plus watching shooting stars at night. Go down to the pink granite ledge at water's edge, sit on our granite bench and enjoy the ocean breezes and marine wildlife.
Swans Island is accessible daily by a State of Maine Ferry from Bass Harbor (near Bar Harbor). Please search for the Swan's Island Ferry (Maine Department of Transportation) for the schedule and ticket pricing. This is a 17-vehicle and passenger ferry--a 40 minute ride. Four reservations are sold for each ferry. Otherwise, it' first come, first serve. If you miss a ferry, just relax as you'll get on the next one.
Please note: Swans Island is dry--no alcohol is sold on the island. Please bring any alcoholic beverages if you wish to partake. There is one store on the island (T.I.M.S.) and it's very well stocked, but it's more affordable to bring your groceries and drinks onto the island. T.I.M.S. is open every day and sells fresh lobsters at the lowest prices. They also sell homemade pizzas, which are tasty, on Wednesday and Fridays. Call ahead to place your order. Every Saturday morning, homemade sticky buns and cinnamon rolls are sold.

About the host
Hosted by Marilyn Scholl

My husband and I live in Arlington, VA, and we're both now retired. This property has been in his family since he was in junior high school. We have taken our children there since they were infants, and they're now in their late 20's and early 30's. We've made the cabin as comfortable as possible and want to share it with others since we only get there for a few weeks each summer.
Why they chose this property
Summer and early fall in Maine is glorious. The rocky shores, changing tides, amazing sunsets, fresh water quarry, and various hiking trails through the trees on the island are a treat to enjoy. Plus, being able to eat lobster every day if we want to is enticing. It is also an island custom to wave to every vehicle, bicyclist, or walker as you pass. And the Sunday morning pancake breakfasts are a special treat as are other island events throughout the summer.
What makes this property unique
Our cabin is the original boathouse for the dory boats used by the Coast Guard. When they modernized, this little building was floated up the harbor and carried up the hill to create a rental cabin. That's why there are barn doors on one end of the cabin. There's a pink granite ledge at the water's edge and my mother-in-law named the place Red Ledge because of that. There's an old rudder on the wall behind the TV that used to have a 12-pointed starfish in the center so she created a special clock. When you're there, you've entered Swans Island Time Zone which means: Eat when you're hungry, go to bed when you're tired, and get up when you're ready.
