Highbush Cabin combines the rustic beauty of old Appalachia with the luxury and comfort you deserve.
The space
Enjoy a cup of coffee on the old fashioned porch swing, or rocking chair, while the sun comes up.
Have dinner on the deck and see a sunset you’ll never forget. Later, gather around the fire pit for s’mores and stories.
The cabin's furnishings reflect a deep love for the Appalachian tradition without sacrificing comfort.
The Great Room features a rough hewn stone hearth with gas fire, gorgeous rough timber walls, and 25’ vaulted ceiling. The space is uncommonly bright and airy for a log cabin.
The kitchen is supplied with cookware to suit all your needs, and dishes to serve 8. You'll have all major appliances: dishwasher, microwave, electric range & oven, & full size Samsung fridge. There's a Mr Coffee machine and a genuine, Italian made espresso machine (because giving up lattes is bit too rustic for some).
The main floor bedroom has a queen bed, generous closet, and full bathroom with shower (no tub).
The 2nd floor loft is furnished with a full sized daybed and twin trundle bed, a leather loveseat, and a fabulous armchair glider; it’s a perfect space for family or friends to gather and enjoy the 47” tv and blu-ray player, or a quiet board game. Dish satellite tv service is provided with DVR capability. Satellite internet powered WiFi has coverage across most of the property..
The rest of the upstairs Is devoted to the large master bedroom, with its own mini-split HVAC system, queen bed, walk-in closet and en suite bathroom (no tub). There's a workspace tucked away in a quiet corner .
The Dollhouse, an exquisitely crafted tiny cabin next to the woods, was originally built to house music lessons. It has electricity and water from a hose outside, and is furnished with a mini refrigerator, a space heater, and an artist's easel and art supplies. It is an inspiring and peaceful space to use however you like.
*Note: the Dollhouse does not have its own bathroom. Please plan ahead accordingly!
Guest access
Located 6 miles from Lake Lure and 2 miles to Rumbling Bald, the cabin is in a gated private community, Sweetbriar Farms South. Using a PIN code, you will drive through the gate (be sure to wave hi to Otis, our black bear mascot!) and drive about 1 mile on the well maintained Sweetbriar Rd to Highbush Cabin.
There’s parking for 4 cars: 2 on a concrete pad, and 2 on the gravel drive. As our guest, you have use of the Level 2 EV charger (J-1772).
The house, the grounds, and the Dollhouse are yours to use. We retain a small locked storage area in the master bedroom, a small workshop under the house, and the tool shed.
The front entrance is reached by a stone walkway and a full flight of stairs. The 2nd entrance is a short walk on a stone pathway from the parking pad, and is reached by a short flight of stairs (4 steps). The doorway is 32 inches across.
Please note that at this time, the house has no accessibility features for those with limited mobility. We look forward to making accessibility improvements in the future.
Other things to note:
With our mountain location, and the occasional presence of bears, no food or garbage can be left outside. The transfer station for garbage and recycling is 5 minutes away.
Highbush Cabin has its own well, providing very clean drinking water, filtered with a whole-house, 5 micron filter.
Because the cabin is on a septic system, it is important that nothing other than toilet paper is flushed down the toilets!
There is a large and well stocked Ingles supermarket in Lake Lure. We keep a few food items stocked for late arrivals, to minimize the need for a rushed trip on the mountain roads after your journey to Highbush Cabin. The nearest (and only) Starbucks is inside the Ingles store in Lake Lure.
Pets are allowed on a case by case basis, with a $100 pet fee per stay. See house rules for more detail.
A cleaning fee of $100 is charged per stay.
Sweetbriar has underground wiring, with a high degree of electric reliability; a backup generator ensures that a power disruption won’t spoil your stay. Highbush Cabin’s solar power, EV charger, and heat pumps reflect our commitment to the environment.
