Mohonk Mountain Living - New Kitchen!

Red Gate Cottage is excited to announce it's a brand new country kitchen! Plus, the house feels even more rustic with new hardwood floors in the kitchen, as well.

Red Gate cottage is situated on an acre near the famed Mohonk Mountain House. You'll feel far from the madding crowd in your charming hideaway, yet welcome the short drive to town (New Paltz (2.2 mi.), High Falls (8.0) or Rosendale (7.0) for a quick run to Rock and Snow for gear or a bite of great comfort food at the Brauhaus. The cottage is a perfect place to embrace your love for mountain life, including cooking up comfort food, taking a vigorous hike, or just slowing down.

The cottage's convenient location makes it a perfect home base for taking in all the Hudson Valley has to offer. The area's most important sites are all within a short distance: bike the Rail Trail, swim and picnic on the lake at Minnewaska State Park or hire a guide and rock climb the Gunks. Mohonk and New Paltz are big with cyclists, kayakers, and hikers. Venture a little further and enjoy the quaint villages of Stone Ridge and Woodstock or check out the wonderful antiques and restaurants in Kingston and Hudson.

Red Gate Cottage is tastefully decorated in a contemporary, rustic style. This cottage-style house has two bedrooms, one full bath, an open and inviting kitchen/living room and dining space made especially cozy with its centrally located wood stove and vaulted ceilings. The private den doubles as a third bedroom and opens to the deck if you want to bring the outdoors in.

For gardener souls, our mountainside location encourages the gardening spirit. Flower, vegetable and herb gardens are a constant project so if you join us during the warmer months, there is always something in bloom.

THE PRESERVE IS YOUR BACKYARD

Spices and staples are provided for your convenience. A deep farm sink, brand new dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster, microwave, and bakeware are also on hand. Handmade ceramics, glassware, tablecloths, and vintage flatware lend to a charming dining experience. A lovely farm table is a perfect way to serve up your feast, whether your entertaining friends or cooking up a romantic dinner. Outside is a Weber for all year round grilling.

Included in your stay is our membership at the nearby Phillies Bridge Farm CSA (Spring-Fall only). A trip to Phillies Bridge Farm comes with magnificent views of the Gunks while you enjoy picking your own flowers and herbs to add to your produce share. Their almost weekly schedule of projects, informal concerts and festivities provide ways to engage with and feel like you work on the farm.

For our summer and fall guests, we have a small vegetable garden that's at your access. We regularly plant kale, tomatoes, eggplant, jalapeño peppers and more and leave it to you to harvest.

JUST RELAX
If disconnecting is your plan, you can melt away the afternoon in the adjoining sun-room with lovely french doors to the deck and garden. A small collection of books is on hand. You're all set for work or streaming movies with the super-high broadband wireless internet available throughout the house.

Both bedrooms in the cottage boast new extra-comfy beds and fresh cotton linens. The master bedroom invites the outdoors with its east-facing exposure and patio door that opens up to the yard.

Fresh cotton towels are provided for your stay as well.

The utility room is equipped with a washer and dryer and picnicking accessories.

Finally, full details on the house and many of the region's best sources of food, adventure, and other local secret finds are included in the house guide that you receive upon confirmation of your reservation.

Super Stay

Comfortable small house in the perfect location for enjoying the New Paltz area and Mohonk Preserve. Ginny was entirely available by phone or text and responded immediately if we had a question or concern. We would and will hope to stay here again.

Lovely home, great location

A light-filled and gracious place. The convenience of the location can't be beat, while still being "up the mountain." Close to town, the Preserve, and centrally located in the Hudson Valley.

Mountain retreat near New Paltz village

The location and setting of this rustic cottage can’t be beat! So close to the village and the Mohonk Preserve that everything is within 15 minutes. We enjoyed the local farm markets and a great CSA came with our rental. We spent an entire summer here and were never bored. The cottage is inviting and well stocked with everything you need.

Great Place to Stay

We booked this place last minute and the owner was very accomadating to work with our last minute arrival. The place is much bigger than you might think from the photos and great for a base of operations around New Paltz. We're rock climbers and were happy to be closer to the crag than the camp sites. There were even some toys that our boys loved digging into!

weekend spring stay

Location and weekend was great! The property owner was attentive. We had a hiccup checking in and didn't receive the welcome packet info, but luckily was quickly corrected...property was close to all and easily accessible. Smart TV could be improved/updated, but we really liked the house and owner! thanks!

Beautiful outdoors, comfortable place

Lovely location, sizable yard and close to many hikes and the town. Comfortable beds. Easy to communicate with Ginny. Kids enjoyed playing with the toys onsite as well as jumping and climbing around the big rocks in the yard. A few small issues (mice and bugs- to be expected given more rural location, shower head spraying water in all directions, cleaning staff coming in while we were still there without notification due to miscommunication), but overall a pleasant stay.

Cozy Cottage, but could be SO much more!!

Three of us spent 3 nights in New Paltz at the cottage. It was clean and cozy …the road noise did not bother us. The new kitchen was nicely done! The outside needed LOTS of sprucing up…there were weeds, the grill was overflowing with ash, the garden needed some love. There were no vegetables to enjoy. I am not one to complain, but the price was high for the condition of the property. We DID appreciate the cleanliness and our beds were comfortable.

Hovel "not so sweet" hovel

This property imbues the word rustic with a whole new meaning. The dead plants and debris at the entrance should have given us warning. We were very disappointed in the 3rd bedroom. It contained a very uncomfortable pull out sofa that has seen better days. The sheets for all 3 beds were torn and we slept very fitfully due to the constant noise from the busy road. The wiring is, shall we say very creative and we were in fear of fire from the obvious code violations. You would be better off pitching a tent than staying at this property.

Great Hiking Cabin, Disappointing for the Family

This property is a cozy place for a single or couple to enjoy rustic living in the mountains with great hiking nearby. However, we were a family of four with two kids, age 9 and 7, and were disappointed. It requires the wood stove to keep the down stairs warm which is nice, however the stove is located in a high traffic area so we had to barricade it to keep our kids from accidentally walking/falling into it. There were artwork and books lying about that were not kid friendly and upset my daughter. However, the toys available were greatly entertaining and appreciated. The location is on a busy road so letting the kids play outside was worrisome, though I agree with other reviewers, it was not loud. There were no window coverings in the bedrooms which was not ideal for kids privacy. The laundry room required moving boxes to access the machines and no detergent or sheets were offered. With kiddos having the machines on vacation is one of the perks versus a hotel. I can see the cabin is special and has interesting character and would recommend it as a rustic hiking cabin, however I would not recommend to a family with young kids.

Fixer upper in process

I was very hopeful about this property, but was quite disappointed overall. It has potential, but many things detract from making it any place I'd recommend. On the positive side, Ginny is friendly; the flowers and trees on the property are beautiful, and the sitting areas are quaint and charming. Nice sunny places to drink coffee in the morning. When I finally got Ginny's cell phone number, she always responded in a timely fashion. Others have mentioned the traffic noise. That's not a joke. The bedroom windows are only about 20 feet from a curve in a fairly heavily traveled road. That means trucks and motorcycles brake and then accelerate right outside the house until late in the night. If the weather is such that closing the windows works, that does help some. But when we were there we were quite warm without the windows open, and the window AC units hadn't yet been installed. Furthermore, there are no window coverings for most of the bedrooms windows, so if you can sleep with the traffic noise you'll be waking up with the sun. The bathroom sink hardly drained at all, even after we poured draino into it. There's an infestation of carpenter ants who appear to be eating the house and depositing their frass all over the kitchen. Even after wiping it all up, they return within hours. If you're thinking of staying, I'd make sure this has been addressed. I'm sure they aren't happy about the problem. Finally, we got several pieces of misinformation from Ginny. The promised farm share only happens in summer (the farm said she was confused about this), and the house manual suggested that trash day was Monday or Wednesday. Well, turns out it's Tuesday. :-) Perhaps she has a lot on her mind. And when we tried to communicate with her through VRBO it often took several days for her to reply, and only after I reached out again. Get her cell number since texting her works well.

A. Beautiful cabin

This property is lovely and located on a beautiful road just outside New Paltz. The house is really charming and decorated in a lovely combination of modern and rustic. The kitchen is large and easy to accommodate people and food prep and cleaning up. The beds were clean and comfy. The host was easy to contact and attended to our questions very quickly. The weather was exceedingly, unseasonably hot while we stayed there, but the cabin remained surprisingly and comfortably cool without A/C. Some not so positive things- the listing does not say anything about entertaining at the site. We were a group of 5 renting for the university graduation weekend. We intended to host a small gathering to celebrate and let the host know our plans. Her response was surprising. In the listing it states that the kitchen is perfect for hosting family and friends (which it is) but the host is not amenable to this, at all. We planned for 10 extra adult guests for a simple meal. Three hours. She shut down the idea and contacted lawyers who suggested she cancel the reservation without refund, increase the security deposit and that we obtain a separate liability insurance policy for $500,000 in order to host this small gathering. This was shocking and put a total damper on our special weekend. We rescheduled for another location so as to avoid any litigation for a small dinner party of adults. Word to the wise, this place is lovely and comfortable, but the owner is somewhat interventionist and, in my opinion, overly reactive. Don’t have anyone come over if you stay!

Nice location, issues with cleanliness

While the location is perfect, about 2 miles away from the mountain house and close to good places to eat, was disappointed with the overall cleanliness of the house…mouse droppings found under the sink and on the bath towels in the bathroom…had to dry ourselves off with paper towels after showering…water in sink in bathroom and kitchen were freezing cold, thankfully the water in the shower was warm…there were stains on the sheets in the bedroom, cobwebs behind the door in the kitchen, no curtains on the windows…heat on the first floor was essentially nonexistent and while there is a wood burning stove there to use, have not had any experience using it and so felt uncomfortable using it…we were there during the snow storm this past weekend and they did provide us with someone to shovel the driveway which was really nice…they do have utensils and appliances there to use as well as some refrigerator items to use, but felt weird to use them as seeing there were mouse droppings there…the owner herself is nice but felt mislead in terms of the description of the property…it definitely does have potential as other renters have posted in their reviews, but definitely some major cleanliness concerns

Eclectic and Comfortable

Welcomed with a bowl of fresh strawberries! Comfortable and homey. We were very happy here seeing/entertaining friends and family after the year of “nobody.” Area is great for walks, hiking, more. New Paltz is a throw-back to the 60’s/a youth-oriented college town with mostly casual food. One more upscale resto we recommend is Novellas; also Butterfield (Stone Ridge; more $). Close towns don’t offer much but a slightly longer drive gets you to Beacon, Kingston, Saugerties, Woodstock and some other interesting Hudson Valley activities (Bannerman Castle;Opus 40). The house is "funky." Don’t expect upscale or new. We stayed a month and had no problems other than bathroom hooks falling off the wall. We opted for the softer bed in the non-AC bedroom but on very hot nights the AC + fans worked to cool both rooms. The house is furnished with everything needed but cluttered. We had to use the bench and kitchen counter-table to store dry goods. Downstairs AC cools the LR if angled right, and the den partially, but not both at the same time. It doesn’t do much for the kitchen. But it sufficed. In case it matters to some, there are 6 steps to the bedrooms and the property is slightly sloped. We were selective about opening windows as several screens are torn or not tight enough to keep bugs out. Same with door screens. Ginny was immediately responsive and always gracious. “Ant issue”- we encountered about 5-6 a day, not a big problem. One day we came back to more but not swarms or an infestation. Street noise was only a two second issue when we sat outside. It is completely private. It was a bit hard to get used to no curtains and early morning sun, but we did! This should give everyone a clear idea of what to expect. Key points: responsive host, very comfortable, fully stocked. We enjoyed our stay.

I stayed a over a month at Ginny's Mohonk house and had a pleasant and peaceful stay. The house was clean, comfortable and just my style. There is a beautiful kitchen and simple tasteful decor that makes all the living areas a joy to spend time in. Furthermore, beautiful flowers and trees blossomed when spring came. Ginny was a communicative and attentive host. She responded swiftly to some of our mishaps i.e. locking ourselves out and made sure we knew how to deal with snowy weather when we first arrived. I miss it dearly!

Excellent location, comfortable home

Cozy mountain home, very warm and inviting, with a nice layout that allowed people to be together when they wanted and to be alone when they wanted. Very comfortable space for a family of four. The location is the real reason for the five stars, though - it's less than 10 minutes to New Paltz Main Street and less than 10 minutes to several trailheads, which was fantastic. We had a really nice weekend and would love to come back.

Healing escape!

Two months after the COVID-19 lockdowns my husband and I needed a healing few weeks surrounded by trees and nature. We came to the right place! The cottage is spacious and comfortable (huge in comparison to our Brooklyn apartment!), We spent days sipping coffee on the deck listening to birds sing. At night if you're lucky you'll be treated to the sound of the resident Barred owl that shouts "WHO COOKS FOR YOU!" and tons of stars!! We could not thank Ginny enough for the included farm share (tons of fresh veggies once a week during summer!!!) and use of their Mohonk Preserve passes we did so much hiking at the Spring Farm Trail head (recommended) just a short drive up the road (deer!! Fox! coyote!! yes I saw a coyote! very cool) a great 4 weeks that we had up in New Paltz. We can't wait to return. Best, Pilar and Ivan

About the host

Hosted by Ginny

Host profile image
I am a Brooklyn native and have fallen in love with Mohonk mountain. Easy to do if you're a nature-lover. I look forward to all seasons for hiking, gardening, cooking with produce from the garden, and being part of the wonderful New Paltz community.

Why they chose this property

My cottage offers a little taste of mountain living. A great place for a little wild country. I've also fallen in love with the stone on the mountain and recommend a little pre-read on the geology and glacial activity that occurred on the mountain, the reason for the massive boulders in the fields and around the yard.

What makes this property unique

Red Gate Cottage is a labor of love. A constant garden. I'm continuously working to update it to become a unique alpine home. Look for updates on our progress!
