About this property

Hunt Box-Antique Filled Cottage on Lowelands Farm-Middleburg ZONR-2024-012704

The Hunt Box is located on our family farm where we raise Christmas trees, herbs and flowers, right in the heart of Virginia’s Hunt Country. In 2002 we built this house based on our studies of the architecture of Colonial Williamsburg. We gave it a tidewater story-and-a-half appearance with standing seam metal roof, clapboard siding, stone and stucco foundation, cozy front porch and second floor dormer windows. The interior is highlighted by the stone fireplace and rough beam mantel, large light-filled windows that overlook barns, woods and pastures. Most unique is the wide plank flooring of oak and chestnut which originated from a hundred year old barn in Sperryville, VA, which we had dismantled and made into flooring for the cottage. The stone for the fireplace was unearthed here on the farm. The configuration of bedrooms is: the top floor (2nd story) has a large master bedroom with king bed, dressing table, dresser and sitting area, plus flat screen TV and walk-in closet, as well as a smaller bedroom with an antique iron and brass double bed and corner sitting area; there is a shared double vanity bathroom on this level. The first floor has an entry area leading to the formal 'great room' with the dining area. There is a fully equipped kitchen with stainless steel appliances, and a separate mudroom/laundry room. The third bedroom is on this level, with a walk-in closet, full bath and flat screen TV. This serves as a sitting room/den during the day and uses a queen pull-out sofa for overnight. This room leads to a lovely covered stone porch with pastoral and sunset views from the old-fashioned porch swing. We are conveniently located 6 miles from Middleburg, 38 miles West of DC, 35 miles East of the Shenandoah Valley, on a quiet country lane in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

This Williamsburg reproduction guest cottage is decorated as a traditional English Hunt Box, with equine art and memorabilia, lovely antiques, oriental carpets on wide-plank oak and chestnut floors, a stone fireplace and high-end bed linens. Enjoy the outdoors from two patios and a covered porch, with views of mountains and fields. Relax in the comfort of a fully-equipped modern house with a touch of our English heritage.

Our surroundings provide the opportunity to witness the traditional fox hunt, watch farm-related chores and animals, walk along quiet country roads, hike to Goose Creek, enjoy our extensive flowering trees and perennials, or simply relax on the porch swing while you watch the sun setting over the Blue Ridge Mountains. Guests can enjoy seeing our miniature donkeys romp around their pasture. Mother Nature provides the opportunity to experience: the flights of red-shouldered hawks, pileated woodpeckers and the occasional great blue heron; our perennial pair of Canada Geese walking through the horse field; deer grazing in our fields and the nightly sounds of owls and spring peepers.

Our farm is located one hour west of Washington, D.C. and 40 minutes west of Dulles International Airport. We are in a rural area with farms 300 to 1500 acres nearby. Fine dining is available in every direction from Middleburg to Leesburg, Warrenton, Upperville and of course the D.C. area. Recreational activities exist all around with Vineyards and Wineries, Museums, Battlefields, hiking on local trails or the Appalachian Trail, horseback riding, tubing on the Shenandoah River at historic Harpers Ferry, WV. Loudoun and Fauquier Counties have the largest concentration of wineries in the state, providing the opportunity to spend full days touring and tasting a great variety of Virginia wines.

The cottage would be an excellent home base while visiting Washington, D.C. or for the business person doing an extended stay in the DC Metro area or the Dulles Corridor and wanting space for their family to visit on weekends. A great weekend escape for residents of the DC area, we welcome weekend foxhunters, couples on retreat, families seeking country pleasures, cyclists, writers seeking solitude or anyone wishing to immerse themselves in the mystique of Middleburg and the hunt country of Virginia. Those involved in fox hunting will enjoy our proximity to all of the local hunt meets; the Middleburg Hunt and The Snickersville Hunt pass through adjoining farms. We welcome riders in the numerous horse shows in our area, from the Hunter/Jumpers to Steeplechasers. Garden lovers and those following the spring garden tours will love our proximity to the Virginia State Arboretum at Blandy, Oatlands Plantation, Morven Park, Long Branch, and numerous other historical homes and gardens.

Perfect Middleburg Hunt Box and lovely farm
Just a “storybook” Hunt Box on a storybook Middleburg farm! The house is charming , lovely and warm as is Host, Karen!! A wonderful welcome gift of wine, honey and mulling spices greeted us and a perfectly built/prepared fire ready to be lit and enjoyed on the drizzly, chilly fall night when we arrived. We were in love with their two mini donkeys ( we have owned 5!) and a Mama cow and her two little calves! Just a lovely weekend - we came to enjoy the Christmas in Middleburg weekend - notably the parade of the horses and hounds down Main St. All was lovely - thank you , Karen and Rick!! We look forward to our next stay with you!

Great space, great area!
The place, although on the owners main home property is far enough away not to feel like you are on the property with others nearby. The owners are very helpful and responsive. The place is clean and the area is so quiet, with the exception of farm animals.... it is a bit out of town, but not too far and the drive is nice.

This elegant and peaceful property was a perfect stay during our daughter's wedding. Karen & Rick are welcoming, gracious and helpful hosts. Their welcome book with local tips makes me want to book a return visit. They extended many courtesies throughout our stay. Warmly, Marge and Kevin

The Hunt Box
The Hunt Box is a beautiful comfy, cozy Cape-Cod style cottage sitting atop Lowelands Farm in the gorgeous Virginia countryside. I have stayed there often & I absolutely love it! It is so peaceful & relaxing. Karen & Rick are the best hosts & have made sure everything you may need is there. The Hunt Box is close to towns/villages, great restaurants & wineries. I highly recommend The Hunt Box to all. I promise you will not be disappointed! I know I will definitely be back! Thank you again, Karen & Rick!

Quintessential Cottage Charm
A perfect picturesque getaway located on a lovely quiet farm just minutes away from great restaurants and shopping in very charming Middleburg. The cottage is cozy and inviting, quite spacious, and has several places to unwind with its 2 porches and 2 patios, all with wonderful views. Even the drive to the cottage and around Loudoun County (horse country) is spectacular. Truly worth a visit.

Sweet, gracious, "farm away from home"
We (husband, daughter, and son-in-law) stayed at Hunt Box for a long weekend to celebrate a dear friend's wedding. During out "off" hours, we loved relaxing in this charming home. The garden and farm is blessed with birds, butterflies, cows, donkeys and lovely trees and flowers. The surrounding area is quiet and bucolic -- great for walks and jogs. The house has been decorated, maintained, and equipped with an enormous amount of care and attention. Cooking was a joy, eating at the dining table or the patio was lovely, there is room for people to do a little work, the bedrooms are comfortable and lovingly decorated, the bathrooms are clean and well-supplied, and there is plenty of space to socialize and relax. We highly recommend Hunt Box if you want to relax, re-charge, and re-connect with loved ones.

Sweet memories made at Hunt Box
A precious home in Virginia farm country with everything you need to make your stay comfortable…. not to mention beautiful views, room to roam - and Karen as a perfect host. Our family had an amazing time on our day trips to Harpers Ferry and DC, and on our the last night in the area we enjoyed Mount Vernon by Candlelight … a beautiful event during the Christmas season. ALL of our day trips and activities were within about an hour of Hunt Box, making it a desirable location for visitors who like to get out and explore! We can not recommend this listing enough and hope to return one day. Thank you Karen, Hunt Box is wonderful and so are you!

Welcoming home on sprawling property!
This warm and exquisite home is on a sprawling property that included a farm -- cows & donkeys! We would also wake up to deer on the front yard. The sunset and sunrise were beautiful. The owner was very friendly and answered questions quickly. We hope to return soon!

Great visit!
We stayed at the Hunt Box with family while we were in Middleburg for a wedding. The property was beautiful and the home was very cute, clean, and it was clear Karen and Rick take great care to make sure their guests have a great stay. We very much appreciated the fresh flowers, coffee and wine that were there when we arrived! Karen was very attentive and quickly answered any questions we had, and provided clear directions that made our arrival easy even though we got there in the dark. Our 7 month old loved to see the donkeys and to go for walks around the property and surrounding area. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone looking to visit the Middleburg area.

Country Getaway
The Hunt Box was a lovely place to stay for my husband and me and our adult daughter. It is very homey and comfortable. The owners were very friendly and responsive. We enjoyed visiting with their two donkeys on the farm. It is a rural location and about 10-15 minutes from Middleburg. Unfortunately it rained the whole time we were there and we were not able to enjoy the multiple outdoor areas at the house. We will definitely return!

Peaceful and comfortable stay at The Hunt Box
The Hunt Box was a piece of serenity in VA wine country. Far enough from the noise of the big city, but close enough to several large suburbs and towns. A group of friends and I were looking for lodging that could comfortably fit six people while attending a wedding in the area. We’re so glad The Hunt Box was the only reasonable option left! The house itself was beautiful, well-maintained, and had everything we needed for the stay including a few extras (great selection of coffee and some quality wine)! Lots of character and snippets of history from the family could be found throughout the house. Really made the stay feel homely - something you won’t get at a hotel. The property is large and the donkeys up front were a friendly sight that made the stay unique. Karen and Rick were very kind and informative. They provided directions every step of the way and we’re always available if we needed anything. Thank you both for a great experience. Would recommend a stay here if you’ll be in the area!

Picture Perfect!
Our stay at the Hunt Box was wonderful! Set on a hill overlooking a grassy field and barn, Hunt Box was picture perfect, literally! On our last morning we took selfies with the house, trees and lovely sky as backdrop. Karen was super nice and responsive! We felt welcome and comfortable in the home. Karen brought us a fresh bouquet of flowers from her garden and there was a jar of local honey waiting for us when we arrived. It was clear that she and Rick care deeply about the home as it is well maintained with attention to every detail (umbrellas for our use on a couple of rainy days) Hope life aligns so we can stay here again someday. A perfect weekend!
We came for a wedding in town and loved our stay at the Hunt Box! Karen was lovely to talk with as were her family close by. The Hunt Box is relaxing with the beautiful view while eating breakfast, sitting on the porch swing, and swinging in the shade on the hammock. The donkeys in the front pasture were as sweet as can be! We would love to visit again soon! Thanks, Karen & Rick!

Amazing girls trip!
We had a girls weekend visiting wineries in the area and the hunt box was the perfect location! The owners were very friendly, accommodating, and nice. They even helped us try to fix one of our cars when a rock got stuck in the tire and was making a horrible noise. They were super flexible on check in/out, and even brought over fresh flowers for the table. The beds were very comfy (sheets were definitely high quality!) and the kitchen had everything we needed. The only hard part was finding an uber to pick us up in the evening for dinner, but the owners provided names and numbers of people who could help with rides. Overall we had a wonderful weekend and would definitely rent here again. Thanks Karen and Rick for your hospitality!! :)

Hunt Box is a great place
Peaceful, quiet and tranquil location as the farm is truly located out in the country. So driving is part of the experience through beautiful countrysides but great location to reach different towns. The home is extremely comfortable and so well stocked with all the necessities. Coffee (ground for the maker but also Keurig and Nespresso machines with pods), half & half plus a dozen farm fresh eggs. Great sitting areas inside and out (favorite is the porch swing). The interior is furnished with many personal items which makes it “homey”. The host is incredibly informative, friendly and warm.

My family thoroughly enjoyed their stay at the Hunt Box. The house is well appointed and charming. Access was quite easy and location was within easy reach of other commodities (restaurants, my son's house, etc.). The hosts were exceptional - willing to help at all times, providing us with the right ammenities and advice. The location was perfect, we saw deer, squirrels and other creatures during our long walks in the area. I would recommend this property to my friends. Thanks to the Lowes for hosting us.

About the host

Hosted by Karen Lowe

Host profile image
We have lived in Middleburg since 1977 and enjoy gardening, photography, kayaking, hiking, reading, antiques, architecture and travel. Rick is a life-long Washingtonian, while Karen spent part of her childhood abroad before coming to the D.C. area. Over the years, we developed our 66 acre farm to raise and market Christmas trees, herbs and horses. We built our home and barn first, then the guest cottage. We enjoyed years of escorting our son and daughter, and their numerous ponies and horses, to horse shows throughout the Eastern U.S. Our daughter, her husband and our grandchildren live in their new home on part of our farm. Our son, an economist and MBA, is now the Director of Global Finance for the Tom Ford Division at Estee Lauder. Rick has retired from residential real estate sales after a 25 year career, and Karen has developed and run a small gourmet food business producing herbed and fruited honeys and wine vinegars for the past 35 years. Karen is the President of Goose Creek Herb Guild. We enjoy numerous trips each year to the Eastern Shore of Virginia , where we enjoy the island life at Eagle's View, our waterfront vacation home on Chincoteague Island, and our antique house, My Chesapeake Dream, in Cape Charles.

Why they chose this property

The pastoral scenery, wildlife and quiet country roads are what drew us to Middleburg. We cherish the friendly hospitality of the hunt country, the traditions and history of the area. The serenity our quiet country farm setting provides is a delight, yet we are within an hour of the Kennedy Center, Smithsonian Museum, National Art Gallery, National Cathedral, Georgetown and all the cultural opportunities in our Nation's Capital.

What makes this property unique

We enjoy the serenity...the absence of traffic sounds, the presence of bird calls, the expansive views, the walks through the tree field or up the gravel road. We spend relaxing time leaning on the fences, watching the horses, cows, donkey and miniature goats grazing in the pastures, often joined by a small herd of white-tail deer in the evenings. We enjoy birdwatching and identifying many species, hearing the call of the mourning doves and seeing hawks riding the air currents. We love to read on the stone patios, nap or read on the front porch swing, serve meals al fresco, and enjoy the fresh air! On a winter evening, a blazing fire in the stone fireplace encourages many happy conversations. The sunset view from the den and covered porch is quite spectacular! On the farm we have one retired show horse, a darling miniature donkey, miniature goats, chickens, a Scottish Highland cow, our doggies, perennial flower gardens, a Christmas tree farm and endless quiet roads and hiking trails available....our definition of Paradise!
