Cottage featuring a Screened Porch overlooking the Water
This cottage is on a small bluff overlooking the water and surrounding marshes. It is located on a secluded peninsula just 5 miles from Bath, Maine (The 'City of Ships').
There is a hiking trail along water's edge and also kayaks or canoes for rent to explore the waterways.
The cottage has wood beamed ceilings and pine floors. There is a good size screened porch from which you can enjoy sunset views over the water.
There is a queen size bed in one bedroom and two twin size beds in the other. The couch in the living room converts to a bed for additional sleeping accommodations.
For those who desire to stay 'plugged in' we offer Satellite TV and Wireless Internet.
The kitchen is complete with full size refrigerator, stove, microwave, toaster and coffee pot not to mention all the pots, pans, dishes and utensils you will need. If you like to BBQ there is a charcoal grill just outside the front door. For lobster lovers we have a large pot available for you to cook them fresh in your cottage.
The Midcoast area of Maine is known for its miles of white sandy beaches and Lobster wharfs where you can enjoy their famous lobster dinners on the dock as you watch the lobstermen bringing in their catch for the day. What makes the midcoast so appealing is the fact that you get to enjoy all this without the crowds. You will love the slower pace of life and the pristine beauty of this untouched area.

This was our second year staying at the cabins. Very quiet and relaxing, hiking with our dog every day.
Looking forward to next year!

Disliked: Communication, location
Dissapointing
First of all there was only one fan in the whole house and this was is July. Second, if you wanted a big pan to cook lobsters you had to walk to a gazebo and get one and return it. Third, the previous renters forgot something so either the owner or the real estate agent asked if they could stop by and pick it up so we said, "Of course". We waited for 45 minutes and no call and no show. So we finally called them and they said, "Oh, it was another cabin." So I emailed them, "We were doing you a favor by waiting." Not cool to treat your renters like that. Not a lot of channels to watch.
On the positive side it was quiet and clean but there were some bob webs.
I would stay elsewhere for the money.
We had such a wonderful time here. It was secluded and peaceful, but also an easy drive to Bath, Brunswick, and Portland, as well as the beaches at Popham and Reid State Park. There's a little zip line steps away from the house that spans a stream, and my young sons couldn't get enough of it. We didn't hesitate to sign up for another stay next summer.
The one heads up I would give to others staying here is that bed sheets and towels are not included by default. The hosts had mentioned this explicitly in the email they sent me beforehand, so it's not at all their fault, but I had just assumed the email was all legalese check-in/check-out/don't wreck the place stuff so I didn't bother reading it fully. So make sure you request the sheets and towels going in. It wouldn't have been an issue at all, except we got in late. We were fine the first night, and when I sent them a text, they dropped off the sheets and towels promptly first thing the next morning.
In all, an ideal spot for a great vacation.

Not quite as we had hoped
Katie is wonderful - very responsive and friendly! The view is beautiful, the location made it easy to get to Bath, and the park pass for Popham Beach and Reid State Park was a big money saver. The screened-in porch and sunset views were lovely! But we were disappointed about a few things:
mosquitoes: Maine is notorious for its mosquitoes, and there were plenty around the cottage. Having to sprint from car to cottage is not an exaggeration! Do not expect to hang out outside unless you are covered in bug spray.
kitchen: not what I would have called "fully stocked" - if you have a good knife at home or a large serving spoon, or cup measures, bring them!
shower: If you are over 5'8", or if you are fairly chubby (like me), you will find it hard to turn around or bend down to wash your legs. If you want luxurious bathing, this is not it. If you are obese, look elsewhere.
beds: very uncomfortable, saggy and lumpy mattresses, including the pull out couch. Investing in new mattresses would really help.
cleanliness: on the surface, it's very clean - spotless fridge and stove, counters, etc. But the cleaners don't seem to look up - at all the cobwebs decorating every corner and down the walls.
spiders: I stayed in the queen bedroom and had no issue, but my daughter in the twin bedroom lost a lot of sleep and killed spiders every night we were there. Arachnophobia? This is not the place for you.
Admittedly, I didn't complain about these things to Katie because I figured there was nothing she could do about most of them once we had arrived - but I hope some improvements are made for the future. It is a cute place, and it served our purposes.

Cute Cabin!
My husband and I spent a week in the Hockomock cabin at the Back River Bend Cottages in late September 2017. The cabin was adorable, had plenty of space, and plenty of hot water. We watched beautiful sunsets over the marsh while listening to the sounds of nature on the screened in porch! It was the perfect spot to have day trips to Freeport, Rockport, Camden, Wiscasset, and Bath. There was even a pass to the State Parks in the cabin for our use that got us into Reid State Park and Popham Beach. The bed was plenty comfortable and the cabin was clean. There were plenty of pots, utensils, and plates to use! We were also able to bring our two cavalier king charles spaniels who loved looking out the screened in porch. They were kind enough to provide some bottled water for our use. This cabin is right next to the boat storage area. The peninsula has a short trail to explore, and Georgetown has plenty of other trails to peruse. Overall, a very relaxing cabin!

Wonderful little place
Centrally located! Clean upon our arrival, and comfy except for the mattresses. I don't expect top of the line mattresses for this price but that is my only complaint. We had a wonderful time! Kayaking, biking , awesome trails close by - Squirrel Point light house was our favorite at sunset! Highly recommend!

Laid back & Peaceful
We loved the cabin!! It was cleaned and well-maintained. It was awesome to go sight-seeing during the day and relax in total seclusion. There are no lights around once the sun went down, which made it feel like you were the only ones around. Windows were open 24/7 with constant sea breezes. None of us wanted to go back to reality.

Disappointing rental.
Quiet and rather secluded cabin. Little more rustic than anticipated. No place to sit outside. Luckily, there was a screened porch for sitting. We had to clean off the porch furniture before we could sit on it. We did not plan to spend the first hour there cleaning after a 10 hour drive. Could not get major TV stations. Mosquitoes were brutal. Had to dash from door to our vehicle. Their tap water was not good to drink, but they did supply couple of gallons of spring water. Way too expensive for what we got. We have vacationed in Maine 5 times now and this was very disappointing and cost much more than the other places.

Our Favorite Spot in Maine
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the cottage. Our kids love taking walks on the Waterman's trail and we love the close proximity to the Beach. We love the owners of the property, Sam and Ruth Francis. They are some of the best people we've ever met. Such warm, caring folks. Georgetown is a hidden treasure of Maine. Perfect Summer weather, secluded and surrounded by the Kennebec River. We would suggest that anyone looking for a great place to relax, stay at Back River Bend Cottages.

Perfect Maine Retreat
We love staying at Back River Bend, and this cottage is perfect. The downstairs is open and airy, the screened in porch adds to the living space. The bathroom in this cottage is larger, the shower roomier. Upstairs has two comfortable bedrooms, fans are provided to help if it gets hot. The area is quiet, Ruth and Sam have.created a special place. My family has returned for many years, and enjoyed each cottage and every visit.

Absolutely wonderful!!!
We spent a lovely week (myself and two of my best friends) in the Hockomock Cottage. The inside is charming, the porch & views were breathtaking, especially the sunsets. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen was well stocked, the shower was great, and we were secluded up at the end of the road. We had fires in the fire pit on several occasions and also used the charcoal (Weber!) grill.
We walked the road leading to the cottages every day, enjoying the view of the river. This area is centrally located, so that you can drive to beaches, the state park, the supermarket and several excellent restaurants without going too far. Downtown Bath, Wiscasset & Boothbay Harbor are a nice drive as well.
Ruth and her assistant Crystal could not have been more accommodating. We plan to stay here again.
Thank you again for a totally relaxing stay in your cabin!

lovely little cottage
I enjoyed the vacation very much. The owners were very friendly and helpful. We had a rocky start. The screens on the porch were in need of repair and there were several large open areas in them which would have allowed many mosquitoes to join our time there. We informed the owners the night that we arrived. Luckily we have some nails and a hammer and "patched" the areas the first night. We called again the next day and the screens were restapled that night. There were also some issues with the wifi. NOrmally this would no be an issue for us at all. We like to stay unplugged normally while on vacation. My husband was taking online courses during the summer and this proved to be a big inconvenience. Again the owners tried to resolve the issue and the internet company was able to set up an alternate system within the first 2 days.
The area was beautiful and we really enjoyed kayaking and hiking. We were able to leave our kayaks at the water's edge so in and out was very easy.
My mother also joined us and we had all 4 of our dogs with us. THey had a great time too especially watching the watercraft go by our cottage.
We definitely would consider returning to this very quiet place to vacation

About the host
Hosted by Katie Francis
We, Sam and Ruth Francis, are the owners and hosts of eight rental properties in Georgetown, Maine. We have four wonderful grown sons and are proud grandparents. We worked for years to finish our timber frame dream home at the tip of the peninsula. We have past the property management part of the cottages to our son, Chris and his wife, Katie.
Why they chose this property
We purchased this unique fifty acre property with its half mile long peninsula over thirty years ago. Since then we have lived here and operated a traditional wooden boat shop. Over the years we have built six charming cottages, as well as, converted a Sailor's Loft to a rental with breathtaking, panoramic views. We also, offer the home that we first built and lived in to renters, with it's ideal location at the tip of the peninsula with deep water frontage and a private dock. We have added other touches to our property with a garden house, ten slip boat dock, a hiking trail and clearings for fishing and picnics.
What makes this property unique
The cottages are situated to allow privacy but also to maintain the quality of the open, natural spaces. Each cottage overlooks the marsh and adjacent Back River which flows off the mighty Kennebec River and nature conservancy land beyond.
