About this property

Cottage Overlooking Water

1 Bedroom ~ Fully Equipped Kitchen ~ Screened Porch

On the western shore of a private peninsula, this one bedroom cottage is the perfect place to get away from it all and relax. Surrounded by conservation land, the area abounds with wildlife. The screened in porch makes a great place to watch the sun setting over the water.

There is a hiking trail along water's edge and also kayaks or a canoe for rent to explore the waterways.

The cottage has wood beamed ceilings and pine floors. There is a screened porch from which you can enjoy sunset views and the wildlife over the water.

The bedroom offers a queen size bed. The couch in the living room converts to a bed for additional sleeping accommodations.

For those who desire to stay 'plugged in' we offer basic channels and wifi.

The kitchen is complete with full size refrigerator, small stove, microwave, toaster and coffee pot not to mention all the pots, pans, dishes and utensils you will need. If you like to BBQ there is a charcoal grill just outside the front door. For lobster lovers we have a large pot available for you to cook them fresh at your cottage.

The Midcoast area of Maine is known for its miles of white sandy beaches and lobster wharfs where you can enjoy their famous lobster dinners on the dock as you watch the lobstermen bringing in their catch for the day. What makes the midcoast so appealing is the fact that you get to enjoy all this without the crowds. You will love the slower pace of life and the pristine beauty of this untouched area.

Beautiful spot and cozy cottage

We had a wonderful stay at the Kennebec Cottage! The screened in porch was our favorite spot to have breakfast and we were able to rent kayaks for a trip down the river one day. The property is in a convenient location to Bath and Five Islands and only a short drive to Freeport and Boothbay Harbor. Ruth was very welcoming and helpful, we will definitely be back! The only things we would have changed would be to have a more comfortable mattress on the bed and the shower didn't seem to have been cleaned from the last guests, some of their items were left over.

Incredible experience.

The morning view of mother nature on display every morning, sipping coffee on the screened porch was incredible. The cottage has a central location to the beachs, City of Bath and the best Lobster shack ever. Great to stay all day exploring or use as a base camp. Can't wait till the next year for our return.

Peaceful retreat

Perfect for a relaxing week. Cottage was simple but comfortable and plenty roomy for the two of us. Screen porch overlooking the river got a lot of use. A nice surprise was all the conservation land on the island open to the public. I found out about this online— It would be nice to let guests know about this great resource and provide a map! Great kayaking nearby, but no access from the cottage itself. Boat landing at the end of the peninsula and the town landing worked fine. The description listed a DVD player, but there was just a satellite cable box. No big deal for us, but just wanted to note. A fire pit was also listed but we couldn’t find it. We made a fire in the charcoal grill and that was fine. We had a nice bike ride down a dirt road in Arrowsic just over the bridge, but if you bring bikes, know that the main road has fast traffic and no shoulder. If you hike, bring headnets and long sleeves. Mosquitoes were fierce (even in early September) and DEET bug spray got ignored. Bugs weren’t bad around the cottage, though. Beautiful island, great classic lobster place at five islands harbor, lots to do and see nearby, or just read, relax and watch the tide. Overall a great week!

Arenden gezien. Kortom we komen graag nog eens terug.

Wonderful week by the water

My husband and I had a wonderful week at this quaint cottage by the water. The Back River was fantastic for kayaking on. We even watched a Bald Eagle fish for his breakfast from our screened-in porch. The location of the cottage was perfect - 10 minutes from the cute town of Bath but remote enough to feel you are away. We loved spending time at Reid Park and the Popham Fort and also took a day trip over to Maine's Coastal Botanical Garden in Boothbay Harbor. Such a lovely week! We hope to return in the future.

Gorgeous spot on the river (tidal) in Arrowsic. Very peaceful and quiet and close to Bath.

The weather wasn't great that week but it still was a lovely vacation. Read, watched movies and went into Bath daily which is only 15 min drive away. There was a park pass included for Reid State park. The cabin was clean and the ambiance is rustic with beautiful views of the water. The drinking water has a high mineral content so two gallons of drinking water was in the fridge when I arrived. Katie was great. There was no running water on the last day which was fixed right away. The river is a great kayaking spot and you can rent kayaks on the property.

Great scenery and privacy

We enjoyed the local land preserves (KELP) for hiking. Plus, the management of the cabins supplied a season pass to get into the state parks free. The views were great from the large window in the living area. We saw Canadian geese in the marsh and kayaks and boats going by on the river. The bed was comfortable, but a king size would have been nice. We would definitely rent a cabin there again. it was just what we had hoped.

Awesome annivesary week

First time at cottage and we had the most enjoyable relaxing time. The cottage was clean and quite charming, with an amazing view of the back river. Saw lots of deer, eagles and even seals. Katie and Chris were so nice and friendly. Lots to do in the area too, the beach pass saved us money, plenty of walks to explore close by. Overall with all there is to do and the peacefulness, you can not go wrong, WE LOVED the place. gary & terry

We had a wonderful week at Back River!

Kennebec Cottage was charming and well equipped. The view from the porch, especially when there was a sunset or a boat going by, was spectacular. We appreciated having passes to beaches on both peninsulas and took full advantage of them. We enjoyed lobster at Five Islands Lobster Pound, then had another lobster dinner at the cottage (lobster pot and tools were provided). Even the weather cooperated to make a terrific vacation.

Back river Bend is a great place for a relaxing visit to Georgetown, ME

We had a lovely stay at the Kennebec Cottage with its screened porch and views of the river. Everything at the cottage was as described and the pictures are very accurate. Best thing for us is that our dog was able to be with us! Ruth & Sam are very friendly and helpful. The generosity of the local people and artists was truly amazing. We loved visiting the shops in Bath and various artists' galleries in Georgetown, Arrowsic and Bath. People everywhere are so friendly and interesting. There are lots of excellent dining options nearby that were excellent. Back River Bend is an excellent location to kayak, relax and explore.

Happy days at Back River Bend

This was our 5th year at Back River Bend in the Kennebec Cottage. BRB is a peninsula with about 8 cottages and a loft right on the Back River owned and hosted by Ruth and Sam Francis. Kennebec is an idyllic one-bedroom cottage that is both rustic and modern (think Direct TV and wifi). It has a screened porch looking out onto the river (as do most of the cottages) that is a perfect spot for reading, talking or just lazing without bugs. We have spent a month there each year and plan to return.

Great place for two in laid back Georgetown,ME

Nearest town - Bath. Not so touristy. A pass to all the State Parks and Beaches is included. Great hosts. We've stayed here for a week in summer for the last five years. Best prices in area. Local outstanding attractions are the Maritime Museum in Bath, the Botanical Garden in Booth Bay, and the trip to Seguin Island from Popham Beach. I would say forget the sofa bed.

Love always.

Maine is lovely, as is this quiet, serene corner. The owners are not obtrusive; they help you when you need help.

About the host

Hosted by Katie Francis

Host profile image
We, Sam and Ruth Francis, are the owners and hosts of eight rental properties in Georgetown, Maine. We have four wonderful grown sons and are proud grandparents. We worked for years to finish our timber frame dream home at the tip of the peninsula. We have past the property management part of the cottages to our son, Chris and his wife, Katie.

Why they chose this property

We purchased this unique fifty acre property with its half mile long peninsula over thirty years ago. Since then we have lived here and operated a traditional wooden boat shop. Over the years we have built six charming cottages, as well as, converted a Sailor's Loft to a rental with breathtaking, panoramic views. We also, offer the home that we first built and lived in to renters, with it's ideal location at the tip of the peninsula with deep water frontage and a private dock. We have added other touches to our property with a garden house, ten slip boat dock, a hiking trail and clearings for fishing and picnics.

What makes this property unique

The cottages are situated to allow privacy but also to maintain the quality of the open, natural spaces. Each cottage overlooks the marsh and adjacent Back River which flows off the mighty Kennebec River and nature conservancy land beyond.
