About this property

Private Bed, Bath, Parking in Quiet Jim Thorpe Home

Looking to slow down on your next getaway? Victorian living modernized in a home from 1890.

This private bedroom and full bath on the second floor with free parking (a hot commodity in Jim Thorpe!) is a pleasant walk across the bridge (10 min) from downtown. You are close enough for a morning cold brew, afternoon bike ride, or evening cocktail without the need for your car.

This is my primary home which you will be sharing; PLEASE READ THE FULL PROPERTY DESCRIPTION BEFORE BOOKING- I want to ensure I can meet the needs of what you are looking for, as there are MANY housing options in Jim Thorpe, and our offering is unique. Merci!

THE EXPERIENCE:

Mauch Chunk Retreats looks forward to welcoming you to an inspired, simple retreat space to connect you to the history of the Anthracite Coal Region PA. Intentional design & lifestyle elements (local art, repurposed period furniture, historical library ) encourage our visitors to step away from the ¨grind¨ and re-connect to the simpler things in life.

We are available to recommend hikes, walking tours, and curated educational experiences at your request, many off the beaten tourist path.

THE HOUSE:

You will enter through the front door, and a staircase leads to your private bedroom which includes a comfortable queen size bed and hand-refinished 1930s Art Deco furniture. The full bath on the second level is private for your use. It is not attached to the room, it is slightly down the hall.

My floor of the house is primarily the third floor.

My small chihuahua lives with me and may be around during your stay. She is friendly and curious- she will jump on the bed if you let her; please just shoo her away!

IMPORTANT DETAILS:

1) This is a listing for a private room, not an entire house. While guests are welcome to use the living room, please be aware that this is my primary home where I live with my partner, so we may be using that space too. If you plan on a long stay and need full-time access to a living room, consider booking an entire home or studio.

2) While pets are welcome (and many guests with pets have happily stayed!), please only book with your dog if they are quiet and easygoing. I cannot accommodate barking dogs out of respect for my neighbors (and my own chihuahua who herself is a bit barky!). Dogs cannot be left along in the room while you are out.

3) In an effort to travel more sustainably and reduce single-use plastic, I offer guests unlimited fresh filtered water from our reverse osmosis system and cloth towels rather than paper towels. Soap, shampoo, and conditioner are provided but please bring any other disposable essentials you may need.

***Please also note that our home does NOT have central AC.***

If you are highly sensitive to heat, keep in mind that the house was built in 1890. The AC unit in the room runs great but I ask guests to please turn it off when they leave. This is standard practice in the countries in the world where I have spent a lot of my life and I try to run an ecofriendly house. If you let me know when you will be arriving back, I will be more than happy to turn it back on for you shortly before you arrive. Thank you for your understanding and efforts to conserve energy!
______________________________

AN OFF STREET PARKING SPOT IS INCLUDED WITH OUR SPACE. Please park in the driveway rather than on the one-way street. Jim Thorpe is a town built during the 19th Century well before cars so parking in the downtown is limited, but you can easily walk or bike across the bridge and leave your car in the driveway!

We are not a bed and breakfast or short term rental, but can direct you to wonderful places to eat.

Tourism Note: Many restaurants and popular sites in town take Wednesday as their day off. Bars and restaurants also close quite early (10pm for many places).

Great little place!

Stayed here for a night, since all the hotels required a two-day stay which wasn’t good for us. Jennifer was a very nice host and our bathroom and bedroom were neat and clean. The decor of the bedroom is charming. It’s exactly a mile walk to the main drag at Jim Thorpe, with a beautiful view of the gorge as you cross the bridge. We would definitely stay here again.

Mountain Oasis

We had a delightful time in Jim Thorpe. The VRBO was nestled in the upper mountain village of Jim Thorpe. One mile from town, provided a beautiful morning and evening walk along the railroad and river! Quiet little Oasis, hosted by a friendly host, was a wonderful place to stay. The bed was great! Off-street parking was fabulous!!

Excellent stay

We had a lovely time at Jennifer's place. A Very nice house and suitable for a vacation in Jim Thorpe. A warm welcome and personal touch made our stay memorable and Jennifer was very flexible with our check out. Comfortable and homely. The room is great and private with a nice bathroom and kitchen/lounge access. I would love to stay again if opportunity arises in the future.

Wonderful Stay

Incredibly nice room with own bathroom for use during our stay. Comfortable, clean and great location to walk into a very busy Jim Thorpe during the Fall Foliage Festival. Jennifer was fantastic with communications. If you stay (highly recommended), make sure to take time to bond with Walden, an incredibly friendly chihuahua, Also, a great benefit during the busy weekends is a dedicated parking spot. There is also a brewery in a quiet area of the neighbourhood about a block and half away with great beer. You can't go wrong with this location!

Quick getaway in Jim Thorpe

In town for a Buddy Guy concert. Lovely home in the former borough of East Mauch Chunk, promised a private bed and bath but ended up having total privacy as owner was away. Clean, comfortable and convenient with coffee and tea service provided. We’ll stay here again when in Jim Thorpe!

Great place

Jen is a wonderful host. She was very welcoming in opening up her home to us and made sure we had everything we needed to make our trip enjoyable. The location is just a short ride across the bridge to Jim Thorpe historical area and just a short walk to Union Publix Pub which has good food and friendly staff. We would stay here if we come back again.

The Other Side

Clean, comfortable, quiet, safe, and affordable overnight stay in Jim Thorpe. The amenities were as stated in the description. Host, Jennifer is gracious and as engaging as needed. We felt welcomed into her home. This was our first time staying in east JT. There is an excellent micro brewery and restaurants all in the same neighborhood. Downtown JT is easily accessible by walking or a short drive. We would stay here again.

Met our minimum needs

We wanted to stay in downtown Jim Thorpe where most of the tourist action is. This location was in North section of JT which is across the Lehigh River. About a one mile walk to downtown. Hot and Sunny weather made for our rental home to be very hot. Window AC was inadequate so we had a warm nights sleep. The proprietor was friendly and the place met our minimal needs. Nothing special here.

Great location in Jim Thorpe

This place was a perfect weekend getaway for my wife & I. Even though the lower floor was being renovated, it didn't affect the upper floor where our room was. Very cozy & clean room & bathroom, with a comfortable bed. Small touches like a water carafe in room & reverse osmosis tap availability in the kitchen downstairs were appreciated. The neighborhood is very quiet, without the crowds of downtown Jim Thorpe, & has a few places to eat & drink within walking distance, including a brewery around the corner. Quick 5 minute bike ride from downtown if you don't want to deal with parking. The host was very responsive to messages. We will probably be staying here again on our next trip to this charming town!

Exceeds Expectations

We spent 3 nights at this comfortable, convenient spot. Jennifer made us feel completely at home from the start and was able to answer all of our questions about the area complete with recommendations that enhanced our trip. Driving and parking in downtown Jim Thorpe are rough, but an easy bike ride across the bridge to the East side is Jennifer's place. It is in a quaint neighborhood with quiet streets for walking and the Union Public House down the street for good food and a beer after our days of hiking, biking and rafting. Our room had a comfortable bed, soft linens and a private well-appointed bathroom down the hall. We will definitely stay here again!
