Our home awayfrom home
Cunard house is beautifully and mindfully furnished. We found many extras and plentiful supplies compared to previous experiences. In addition, the decor is tasteful and, in some instances, unique. The hosts are lovely folk, full of helpful suggestions for our exploration of Nova Scotia and environs. Their knowledge of local history is a huge plus. And the location and physical setting of this home are a joy to wake up and come home to; the gardens surrounding Cunard House are an added bonus. We recommend this property without hesitation.

Great home base- mid Sept 2023
Awesome front porch to watch the world go by or the rain come in! Clean, clean, clean! Very nice “ layout”, open floor plan, updated bathroom between two bedrooms, comfy beds, great kitchen to cook some meals in, enough utensils, pots and dishes), and comfy sofa and chairs. We felt right at home for our 12 day stay. Great location for our explorations to Halifax, PEI, Cape Breton, and Digby. Close to all things Pictou. Walkable. Landlord was helpful and fully prepared to supply us with electricity in case of a power outage from the hurricane. Very comforting to know. Overall great place and great owners.

Even better than expected!!
The house rental had everything we needed for a 12 day stay, and the view from the front porch out onto the water was simply incredible. Air conditioning worked great as it was extremely hot outside during our entire stay, and Ron the host treated us extremely well and offered advice on local activities and things to do. Would definitely stay again if we were ever in the area!! Thanks Ron for a wonderful time and rental!!

Front and Center in Pictou
We stayed in the Cunard House for two weeks in July and enjoyed every minute. You’re right on the waterfront here with restaurants, shopping, museums and walking trails all within walking distance of your front porch—where we enjoyed mornings sipping our coffee and watching the world go by. Ron and Ginny are great hosts and, after spending many years refurbishing—no shortage of electrical plugs here—the house is spacious, clean, comfortable and the wifi rocks! We’d definitely stay here again.

So comforting and inviting !
We were without question very impressed with this rental. So well appointed and stocked! Extremely clean, an abundant supply of fresh towels, and beds were really really comfortable. The “redo” of this historic property is truly amazing. We felt so comfortable and it was so easy to get the dogs out and having lots of dog stations throughout the town providing a supply of bags and disposal bins was certainly convenient A wonderful picturesque location and so handy to everything in town. This was our first visit to Pictou and found it to be a wonderful small town with beautiful historic buildings / architecture and lots of places to eat with welcoming and friendly folks. A great base to spin off of for a day of exploring the coastal areas. The owner Ron is a lovely man and such a great sense of humor. He very generously shared some of his very interesting experiences, and knowledge of Pictou and area. We had a totally great weekend and stay in Pictou!

We stationed here to go westwards visiting Lunenburg, Peggy’s Cove, Halifax as well as go eastwards visiting Cape Breton Highland National Park. The house is historic and well maintained. It’s on the waterfront and we even saw a bald eagle near by on our last day there. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Nova Scotia!

Nothing Short of Amazing!
Our 7 night stay here was perfect! The location was wonderful. It is right across the street from the water and is steps away from numerous shops and restaurants. Everything is within walking distance. And an added bonus, which we were not aware of, was Jitney Trail which is a wonderful walking trail just at the edge of town. During our time in Pictou saw many bald eagles as well as a few seals. The apartment has everything you would need during your stay. It is spacious, clean and has many unique touches throughout. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom hosted the thickest and softest towels ever! We ate at the Harbourhouse (right across the street), Marina's as well as Stone Soup Kitchen and enjoyed our meals at all three places. We got ice cream from The Cherry On Top and a few odds and ends at the General Store which is located in the old train station. (highly recommend their oatcakes and molasses cookies!) We enjoyed a few day trips during our stay. We visited New Glasgow, Tatamagouche as well as enjoyed a couple of beaches in the area. Monroe's Island and Ruston Beach. We also took the ferry across to PEI as it is SO close (10 minute drive) and enjoyed a day there. We saw Prim Point lighthouse, Woods Island and the Woods Island lighthouses as well as went to Northampton Beach. Before boarding the ferry to head back to Pictou, we ate at Treena's on PEI. It was fabulous! Best fish and chips I have ever had and very reasonable prices. Our trip to Pictou was a 10 out of 10 and I would HIGHLY recommend these accommodations to anyone and everyone who would like to visit Nova Scotia!

We rented this cottage because it was in the location we needed plus they allowed pets. It is a lovely location on the water. It was very nice to walk along the waterfront and into town. The cottage was very clean and the beds were comfortable. It was very nice to have a bathtub and a shower.

Awesome Place! Daily Bald Eagle viewing is special.
Cunard House exceeded all our expectations. Nice, very helpful owners upstairs from this beautiful historical apartment. In addition to wonderful linens and calming decor, we found everything we needed. We spent a lot of our time on the front porch; it was perfect for dining and enjoying the fresh air. Easy walk to sites, stores and restaurants. Great walking area -- Jitney Trail --along the water. Flat and designed for biking or walking, with a remarkable number of wild flowers, benches and beauty! Bikes to rent at Information center, free fresh air concerts and lovely old buildings to meander among. Your good fortune if you can make this rent work with your plans! Our 10 days flew by!

Beautifully restored home. It had all we needed for our stay and owners were very friendly. Close to some restaurants and museum's. Quiet area, and like another person noted you do hear some creaks from the floor, but that's being very picky. Definitely recommend staying.

About the host

Hosted by Ron Arnold

Host profile image
A retired school principal and his teacher wife-and-former-sweetheart spent the last 8 years renovating this 1832 office building built by Samuel Cunard, the founder of Cunard Steamship Lines. Before that we worked in schools in three provinces, one territory and two countries.

Why they chose this property

One side of my family descended from Ship Hector settlers. We were looking for a retirement project in the Maritimes and this building needed some work, was located on the harbour and was empty. Kind of a no brainer!

What makes this property unique

Cunardhouse is a piece of classic Maritime architecture and turned out to be a piece of history as well. Looking onto the harbour on the second floor are three crooked windows that make it stand out in all the old photos of the waterfront. They present a unique 'face' and we think we know their story.
