About this property

Breathtaking Terrace Views at the Foot of the Ancient Castle

Situated in the South of France in the heart of Roman Provence, just at the foot of the picturesque medieval castle of Beaucaire, seat of the Montmorency Dukes for generations, is this unique and extraordinary property. This lovely 17century stone house is perfect for a relaxed holiday vacation or as a quiet inspiring retreat for writers or scholars. It is also a convenient and less hectic base from which to attend the Festival of Avignon, the Photography Festival of Arles, or the Dance Festival of Montpellier. The highest house in town, it offers breathtaking views from its extensive terrace: the castle gardens, Beaucaire’s historic center, the church of Notre Dame des Pommiers with its dome and bell tower, as well as an enchanting 18th century Chinoiserie lookout tower, piercing the sky from the garden of an 18th century mansion just below. The house is a wonderful place for a quiet relaxing escape, yet also provides a perfect base for exploring the treasures to be found in the wonderful region of Provence.

Believed to have been an out-building of the castle, the house has been completely renovated with all modern amenities, while retaining a sense of historic charm, including the original foundation stone of the castle, which is visible from the ground-floor living room. It is decorated with antiques from the region.

The three-story house consists of the ground floor, with a living area, dining area, full modern kitchen ( with dishwasher) and full bath. The second floor, or 'Salon de Musique,' consists of two bedrooms,( one with a queen-sized bed and the second with two twin beds ) an open salon with desk and WiFi ,sitting areas with views of the garden,a CD player and selection of classical music, a second full bath, and a utility closet with washing machine.

The third floor is the terrace floor, and it also has a convenient summer kitchen with a day bed looking out onto the terrace. The hammock on the terrace is a wonderful way to relax after a summer meal accompanied by the local wines of Cote de Rhone. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the fresh oyster vendor comes to Beaucaire and sets up along the Canal du Rhone a Sete, which runs through the city of Beaucaire and provides a lovely take away appetizer or meal to enjoy while taking in the stunning sunsets each night from the terrace. The neighbors’ children call the terrace 'Paradis'.

Beaucaire is situated at the junction of the Canal du Rhone a Sete and the River Rhone. The once famous 'Foire de Beaucaire', a huge market or fair, that happened for centuries on the banks of the Rhone ( and which produced as much income in the 10 days of the fair as the entire port city of Marseilles made in a year) is why the town is so incredibly rich historically and architecturally. Because so much of the town remains intact and forgotten by time, it has been used in many period movies, including “The Lion in Winter” with Katherine Hepburn and Richard Burton, which prominently features the castle, that is literally in the back yard of the house. More recently, a film called “The Horseman on the Roof,” with Juliette Binoche, features the square in front of the church, which can be seen from the terrace.

The town is off the beaten track and is generally quiet, though during the summer it becomes very animated with its own running of the bulls and the bull fights in the town’s bull ring, as well as outdoor concerts, fairs and flea markets. There are some fine restaurants in town, and if one seeks more night life or cultural or culinary activity, Beaucaire is conveniently located just twenty minutes by car from three major historic cities: Avignon, with the Palace of the Popes; Arles, where Van Gogh painted; and Nimes, with its magnificently preserved Roman ruins. There is also public transportation to all three cities.
There is a Municipal swimming in the town, but there are a number of exciting spots for 'swimming in the wild' such as in the Gardon at the Pont du Gard, or at Collias.

For wine lovers, Beaucaire is situated in the heart of Cote du Rhone, and only forty minutes from Chateauneuf du Pape, with its vineyards and restaurants. The entire region itself provides endless discovery, exploration and reward in the magical sunlight of the South of France. Come and enjoy!

One of our favorite houses ever!! The terrace is absolutely magical! Coffee and wine every day!!

This house is spacious, beautifully renovated, and in what we thought was a wonderful location. It is close to all of the attractions of the Rhône vallée but far from places filled with tour buses. Very relaxing in every way. We loved dining at Madame Cecile’s on the old square just below the house and walking to Tarascon to visit their wonderful castle and for the heart stopping bull games. We also took in Nîmes, Arles, and Avignon. Fantastic memories!

Castle house

The house in Beaucaire was very clean and spacious for our family of 5. The bottle of wine that Jeffrey left was a kind welcoming. We loved sitting in the music room and on the large terrace. My only complaint was that there was no television or phone as had been advertised and considering we were staying for 2 weeks during the World Cup and Tour de France, this was a huge disappointment. After touring all day, we were looking forward to catching a bit of the games. I suggest that the tv and phone be taken off the VRBO page.

Beauty in Beaucaire

This house was ideal for our group of 2 couples. We loved the location and quiet ambiance of Beaucaire. It was perfect for day tripping to other towns in Provence and then coming home to a quiet castle. The house was in beautiful condition and well cared for. Beds were all very comfortable. One couple stayed in the curtained bed on the main floor and it made for a fairy tale setting. Even though it was very hot outside during our stay, being built into the walls of the castle made the house a very comfortable temperature. The kitchen was great for cooking an enjoyable full meal of goods from the day's market. Wine and dinner on the rooftop deck was unbelievable. Both the owner and the in town host were very easy to reach, friendly and gave wonderful directions and advice. I hope we are lucky enough in our lives to come back again some day!

Already missing it

We were just blown away when we first walked into this house - it is like your personal small castle! We had a small family reunion (2+4 people), and it was just perfect for that: my husband and I had the downstairs (street level) four-poster bed, which is in the common area, but has enough privacy with curtains around it. Upstairs bedrooms get beautiful light in the morning. The kitchen is very functional and had everything we needed. The upstairs music room is very calming and we imagined sitting there, cozily, on a cold night, enjoying a good book. The cherry on the top is the enormous terrace on the third level! The view really is breathtaking and we spent a lot of time up there, with wine & cheese, stargazing, relaxing in the hammock. So much hard work and love has gone into renovating and designing this beautiful home!

Bliss in Beaucaire

We spent five lovely days in this wonderful property, overlooking the 12C Chateau de Beaucaire. Beyond the location, the house is fabulous, with plenty of space for all, so tastefully decorated that you could not help but settle into a comfortable chair to relax. The kitchen is very well provisioned, the beds extremely comfortable, and the rooftop terrace our favorite destination after a busy day of sightseeing. We loved the location as it allowed us to easily access the sightseeing highlights of the Provence region while still escaping to a quiet, peaceful homelike setting each evening. We really enjoyed the extensive local markets, held Wednesday and Sunday mornings, and located just a few blocks away. We were able to purchase beautiful fresh food to enjoy on days when we wanted to cook, or eat out when we preferred. We had an unforgettable lunch at Mme. Cecile's, as well as meals at several other local bistros. We will never forget the sunsets on the roof, watching the evening swallows and chimney swifts circling the beautiful Eglise Notre Dame des Pommiers. Dennis, the local caretaker was very welcoming, helpful and a wealth of information on the area. Thank you, Jeffrey, for an unforgettable experience.

Perfect staying at home...perfect for exploring the region!

Beaucaire was an ideal location from which to explore Provence. It is a little more laid back and less touristy than some of the other towns ..For us, that was ideal. Now, to the house. It was wonderful. Comfortable in every way, fantastic views and lounging from that amazing terrace. Every day and evening those Mediterranean skies danced with color and beautiful clouds. We were a couple, so there was more than ample room for me and my wife. The home could easily and comfortably accommodate 4 or even 6, but having it to ourselves was such a treat. We were met graciously by Dennis. He explained everything, although we two “innocents abroad” never figured out the washing machine...but no problem, the local laundramat served us well during our weeks stay. The owner has decorated the home with beautiful, comfortable furnishings of Provence...we felt like we were staying in a French country chateau, with tastefully updated bathrooms and a modern kitchen. What’s our bottom line? A perfect week, thanks in great part to staying in this charming, comfortable and ideally situated home. If we are ever to return to the south of France, I do hope we would be able to rent this home again. (By the way, the owner communicated concisely and in short time to my pre-booking inquiries; he offered some good restaurant suggestions, and had a chilled bottle of wine in the fridge when we arrived....A nice touch.)

Quirky

This is a unique property that requires some effort to reap its rewards. It’s obviously a work of art for the owner who has fashioned it to fit his artistic aesthetic with antique furniture, a grand piano and eclectic artwork. Lots of style but substance, not as much. The elaborate hand held shower contraption in the downstairs bathroom was broken and rendered the beautiful big bathtub inoperable. For two couples this meant sharing the upstairs shower which for us wasn’t a real problem but it might be for you. The parking situation was very difficult. You cannot really drive to the front door but must shlep your bags up a very steep street. And finding parking was not always easy. During the last half of our week all of the surrounding parking lots were unavailable due to an auto race that takes up all the usual parking areas. On one of those nights we had to park in the next village over and walk 15 minutes to reach the house. There are also two steep internal staircases that bothered me, the one person in our party who has bad knees. However, I knew about that in advance so could not complain. The house is well stocked with kitchen and dining implements but it wasn’t clear what could be used and what was private. On the other hand, the rooftop terrace makes up for a lot of shortcomings. It is nothing short of spectacular and we ate breakfast up there and since the weather was glorious, drank our cocktails while marveling at the sunsets and views over the town. I recommend

Fantastic Time!

We had an amazing time in Beaucaire! The place was amazing - great window, amazing light, and the rooftop patio was to die for. We loved getting cheese and fruit at the Sunday market and then watching the sunset with an amazing spread from our perch. Very sweet welcome and super helpful to us throughout our stay. Thanks for a great time!

Traumhaftes Haus

Wonderful Place

The house is quite impressive. It is spacious and well furnished. It’s at the end of the street and borders the grounds of the château, so it’s very private. The third story deck/patio is incredible for breakfast or a late afternoon aperitif. Communication with the owner and the manager was very easy. As was explained on the website, free parking is available at a reasonable distance, but depending on how full the parking lot is, it can be a substantial walk. Also, the last 50 m is at a steep incline. This will only be a concern to people with reduced mobility. Beaucaire itself appears to be very blue-collar, but it is centrally located and a short drive to Avignon, Pont du Gard, Nimes and Arles. I highly recommend this accommodation.

Off the beaten path

We loved staying in the old city. House was extremely interesting. Had a great time visiting Pont du Gard, Les Baux, Carriers de Lumieres, Avignon, St. Remy etc. There was a big day at the castle our last day there...animations and spectacles. Be aware that anyone with mobility issues would have a tough time walking up the street and there are a lot of stairs in the home. There is no tv or microwave. Not a problem for us but if you really need them be sure to ask about it. WIFI worked well. Basic supplies are needed such as coffee filters, TP, paper towels etc. I did ask the manager to get instructions for the dishwasher and washing machine in English as they are quite different from what we have in the US. Overall our group had a wonderful time even though the weather was iffy. The guy at La Terrasse in the square close by is a hoot. Fake fireplace is a riot. Enjoy and relax on the terrace at the top of the house! Sue

Our Favorite Memory of our Trip

This amazing home was even better than we imagined it would be! Located in Beaucaire, in the ancient part of town added to its appeal. It was a haven to return to each evening after a busy day of driving and visiting all the amazing sights in Provence. This house makes you feel like you are royalty in many ways. The antique furnishing are beautiful, or if not antiques, fit so seamlessly into this amazing17th century home that you are comforted just being in it. All 3 floors we carefully decorated beauty! When you first open the front door you are amazed at what you see. it is beautiful! You immediately see a stairway leading upstairs. On one side is a comfy living area with a canopy bed tucked quietly behind it. Peek behind the canopy bed in the back of the main for living area and you will see that this house was built right into the rock foundation for the castle right above it! On the other side of the room is a dining area with a beautiful kitchen area behind it and a few stairs leading up to one of the bathrooms with a tub. The middle floor houses the 2 bedrooms (one queen bed and the other with 2 twin beds), one of the bathrooms with a shower, and an amazing large beautiful sitting area with elegant antique furnishings! All of the rooms have beautiful windows overlooking beautiful settings! The kitchen is up to date with new appliances and all of the food staples that you need to enjoy your stay there. We made a trip to Carrefour the first day and only had to get the actual food that we would need while there. The 2 bathrooms were beautiful as well as being up to date. You will need to buy TP though! The pièce de résistance, and what other reviewers all talk about, is the amazing 3rd floor deck with the million dollar view! It is beautiful during the day where you can see over the ancient village below. Your eye can wander up the hill to the right where the road that runs in front of the house takes you to the castle. It is beautiful at dusk, at sunset, and at sunrise where you feel for a moment that you have no cares in the world. Because this is an ancient city that was not made for cars you will need to tote your bags up a short hill and be aware that you will need to park a short distance away outside the city wall. It was not a problem for us though it should be noted that it is not a good place to stay if you have mobility issues. Our group was made up of 2 couples and we loved our time there! Perfection!

Lovely 17th century house - great base to visit area!

We stayed for five nights. It was just the two of us, my husband and me, so we did not need all the space, but we loved the house and location in the vieille ville section of the town of Beaucaire. The house itself is ancient but renovated, with modern bathrooms, ( incl.good plumbing and water pressure,), beautiful stone walls, period furniture, a washer, dishwasher, etc, There are two bedrooms upstairs, and a large bed in the alcove of the living room on the ground floor. The bed in master bedroom was very comfortable. Everything was very clean, the kitchen, which we barely used, was well-equipped. One caveat: The house is not for the mobility-impaired, it is up a steep hill on the way to the chateau, and then there are two stories in the house plus stairs to the rooftop terrace, which has a great view. The house itself is one minute down the hill to a pretty square, Place de la vieille ville, with a bar, a restaurant (Chez Cecile, it was lovely and very reasonable) and another bar- -restaurant, where you can have a bite and a drink after a long day. We loved the square, had drinks or dinner there most nights. From Beaucaire, we got around to a number of sights: we visited Avignon and area, St-Remy-de-Provence, Les Baux, Arles, the wine country in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and Orange. We have stayed in a number of VRBO places in our travels, and this house was very nice and excellent value for money. Definitely recommended. It can easily accommodate six people. It is a period house though, so it can be a bit dark with the shutters to keep out the heat. The housekeepers are very easy to deal with and the arrival and departure were painless. Hope you enjoy it too!

Charm and character

When we were trying to find a place to stay in Provence we searched for a location that would allow us use it as a central base to visit the wonderful things to see and do in the area. As we were two couples, we needed space and we were hoping for convenience. What we found at this home was more than we could have hoped for. To begin, nestled alongside an ancient castle, the house exuded charm and grace. Three generous stories high, lovingly brought up to date with modern conveniences, the house has two large baths-one with a shower and the second with a deep soaker tub, a big-for-Europe fully equipped kitchen plus a bonus summer kitchen just off the stunning rooftop terrace with the best view in Beaucaire. We were able to do our laundry on site, a nice feature when you are travelling for several weeks. We were a short walk to coffee houses, restaurants, shops and around the corner from the twice-a-week market. It was delightful to listen to the nearby church bells toll. This was our temporary comfortable home where we could relax, savour many bottles of wine, eat delicious local foods and enjoy the authentic historic atmosphere of Provence.

Your own Disney castle- a wonderful retreat

This is simply outstanding accommodation in a central Provence location on the Rhone river. We stayed for 8 days, and every day had short excursions to top sightseeing destinations. The accommodation is spacious. There is an excellent kitchen, and there is a terrace with a great view of the city. You really must have a car to take advantage of the area. There is ample and convenient parking outside the city walls, about a 200 meter walk. Beaucaire is an interesting town, and small enough to make driving in and out very easy. We were met promptly by the agent on our arrival. Very highly recommended for a multi night stay in southern Provence when touring by car.

Exceptional property!

We found this beautiful home to be as inviting as it appears online. The terrace view is simply breathtaking and we spent every possible moment there. The owner, Jeffrey, was incredibly easy to work with and he provided a wealth of information, not just on the house but also on the city of Beaucaire and the surrounding area. The restaurants and markets he recommended were all outstanding, particularly L’Epicerie de Cecile. Beaucaire’s central location made day trips to Arles, Avignon, Les Baux, and Nimes easy and fun. Beaucaire itself is a lovely town and fun to explore. Dennis, the property manager, was also delightful to work with and he helped make our stay easy and comfortable. I would wholeheartedly recommend this property to anyone.

Why they chose this property

I was drawn to Beaucaire by an offer that the city made to artists back in 2000, when an artist could rent a floor in a palace for 25 cents per square foot. When I arrived to meet with the city I arrived early and sought to see the castle up on the hill and followed a street called Montee du Chateau which I was sure would lead me to the castle. It did, but it lead me to what is now my house, the last house up the hill, just at the gate of the garden of the castle. I stood at the gate, looking into the garden and the charming chinoiserie tour one sees from my front door, looked at the house which was in bad shape, saw the terrace, and said to myself that if I could have that house, I would buy in Beaucaire. When I met with the city, I was informed that there were no more artists spaces offered, but if I found a house I liked, we could find the owner and see if it was for sale. We did and it began a long journey that has finally after five years of loving restoration, have arrived at a house more beautiful than I could have imagined. I hope you will enjoy being there as much as I do.

What makes this property unique

In seconds down the hill, one is in the Place Vieille ( Old Square),with cafes or the market square in front of the city hall or Mairie , and an easy walk to all restaurants and markets, grocery stores, .
