Lake Glenville Red Bear Cottage

Stayed in red bear cottage for 6 nights with 4 adults and three teens, perfect size for this group. Right on Lake Glenville and 2.5 miles to Cashiers. Classic mountain lake cottage with beautiful views, outdoor grille and fire pit.

Wonderful location and views of the lake!

A very peaceful spot in which to enjoy the lake. Cabin has lots of character and history. Fun to be in a place that is not just brand new, but reflects the life of the Cashiers area. Well equipped with everything you need, including 2 kayaks. Owners are super helpful.

Loved the "Lake Life" at Red Bear Cabin!

We stayed at Red Bear cabin for 8 days and had a great time. The cabin is lake-front on beautiful Lake Glenville with a great view of the lake. The cabin is a bit older...but is perfect for a lake get-away. Plenty of bedrooms and baths for our family of six. The owners have lived in the area for many years and were helpful with anything we needed...Mike even help us line up a boat rental for the week. The cabin is about 5 miles from Cashiers and close to groceries, restaurants, marina, small shops, hiking trails, etc. In summary, we had a great relaxing week at Red Bear cabin and look forward to returning next summer.

Great Lake Glenville location

We were a family of 10 that included 5 adults and 5 kids. We were there for a three night stay. Overall we had a good time, here are the pros and cons of our stay. Pros - Great location - Beautiful view and easy access to all parts of the lake - Home was well equipped and clean upon arrival. Nicely furnished with ample bedding, etc. - Warm and cozy atmosphere - Owners were responsive - Two kayaks available for use (with life jackets) were great to go around lake and explore island nearby. Cons - As a mom of children the interior surveillance camera made me uncomfortable - If you are looking for complete privacy this might not be the rental for you. Owner was picked up at dock by his friends one afternoon and mentioned coming back the next day to take their personal boat out that is parked full time at the dock (as seen in pictures). We spent most of the day on the lake so unsure if that happened. - Ladder on dock was broken. Kids had to get in and out of lake via the shore. Not a huge deal for us but could be important to some guests. - Upon arrival the bottom floor had a musty smell - opening the windows helped but there was no AC downstairs. There were only two window units in house; one in kitchen and one in master bedroom which are on main floor.

DO NOT EVER RENT FROM THESE OWNERS

After being cancelled from 2 properties because of a major snow storm and being stranded in Gatlinburg we tried to rent this one for a last minute check-in. Property owner called us within 10 min of reserving stating that he had someone else in the property who couldn't leave due to the storm and wasn't sure if we could accommodate us at all but would let me know. In addition, I filtered my search for homes with hot tubs and this one was included in the search. After not seeing one in the photos I inquired if it had one and he said they had to remove it a while back. Given this and the fact that he wasn't sure he could move the other people to even accommodate us at all, I sent him a text 30 min later telling him to cancel our reservation. After being very responsive to the reservation he suddenly became very unresponsive to the cancellation request and ignored my texts...most likely because he already had our money and knew if he ignored it long enough he could take advantage of a situation where a family was trying to make the best of a ruined vacation. It was the most blatant unethical, immoral, dishonest and despicable actions I've experienced in a long time by a business owner. The very small refund they did provide in no way makes up for the fact that we never stayed in the house and cancelled within 30 min of the owner not being able to definitively confirm the reservation. I would say you should be ashamed of yourself but you clearly have no conscience.

Overrated

We have rented VRBO many times in the past....this was our first bad experience. We rented the house for the 2nd week of July 2012. When we walked in the upper area was fairly well kept; however, the basement was awful. It had a very pronounced musty smell and was nothing like the main level....and the problem is that the 3rd bedroom and the bunk beds are downstairs. I later talked with the owner and he agreed that they needed to do something about that smell. The refrigerator was in bad shape...it barley kept our food cold and it had far out used its useful life. Also, when we went to use the grill that is provided....it was disgusting. I burned it on hot for 30 mins and cleaned it for about 15 mins before I cooked our food....we did not use it again. About mid-week it turned warmer and muggy and I asked where the air conditioner was at that was advertised on the website....and was told it was in the outside garage and that he forgot to put them in the windows. I don't recall that being part of the explanation on the website either....I guess that is why it says you rarely need it...because it was not there!!!! Finally, the straw that broke the camel's back was when the dock lines broke loose (on a very old dock) and we had to save our rented boat from crashing into the shore. I was quite frustrated so I e-mailed the owner and their solution was to offer us another night at this Oasis on them??? No thanks...we actually left a day early as it was such a disappointment. I think there is a reason you cannot find many pictures of the house on this site. If you are thinking about renting...make sure you ask them to e-mail you pictures of the basement and other areas. Now...as far as the Lake goes...it is a BEAUTIFUL lake and I would encourage you to come see it....I just would not stay at this rental house.

Experience of a lifetime

We made the best memories here. The setting is majestic, the house is perfect. Views to lake unmatched. The house comfortable, and it is vintage. Sort of a time piece. Board games from the 70's, VHS tapes, cassette player and tapes. Loved every minute of it, and the house is super clean too. Mikee and Mark are the best hosts. They genuinely care. We had access to their friends' pontoon boat- the kids went tubing and had the time of their lives. Smores at the fire pit every night, grilled out day and night. Cannot recommend this place enough. Privacy, comfortable, and all around great time! Just minutes from downtown Cashiers too. Book it!!

The best of both worlds!

We love the mountains and the lake. Hard to find a place that delivers both AND is pet friendly. Red Bear Cabin delivers! It’s a fantastic location! It’s on the lake and within 25 minutes (or less) of numerous hiking trails and gorgeous waterfalls. Had beautiful lake views (as advertised). We used the kayaks and the chimnea pot. Also, just a 10-minute drive to Cashiers and roughly 30 to Highlands. Enjoyed the eclectic and vintage decor. Kitchen and bathrooms are updated (as advertised). The best stocked kitchen we’ve encountered. Owner Mike was very responsive and helpful. Already planning a return trip!

Lovely Retreat on the Lake

We had a wonderful Fall Break at this property. The location is wonderful, central to hiking, grocery store, beautiful lot on the lake. The cabin was very spacious and our two families could separate easily. We enjoyed the fire pits outside, the kitchen is well equipped and the cabin has charm that reminded us of our parents and grandparent's places. We arrived just in time to see the leaves changing, the waterfalls on the lake were wonderful. Very quiet. The laundry is spacious and worked well. We were asked by the owner to take our trash and recycling to the Recycling Center as we left town, which is about 4 miles away. Please know this so you can keep all your recycling separate between glass, cardboard and plastic, also so you can plan ahead. Great place to relax and enjoy North Carolina.

We were right on the Lake with a gentle slope to the Boat dock & Lower patios. Easy to get around see the waterfalls & visit the Nearby villages of Glenville & Cashiers. The home is well equipped & perfect for 2-7 persons. We were 7. We hope to come back next year. Mike & Mark & the cleaning crew were the best. They have good info. of the area & are from the area. Funtastic,

We had a fabulous stay at the roomy, well stocked Red Bear Cabin. Our family reunion was so relaxing and active. We were swimming in the lake, hiking all the local waterfalls, shopping unique stores, and enjoying local restaurants. We also enjoyed the beautiful views and relaxing meals at the cabin. We had six adults and three children at the cabin. A good time was had by all! We hope for a return visit in the future for a repeat of such good times.

Cozy Cabin with spectacular views of Lake Glenville

This cabin has a fantastic location. You can see the lake from every bedroom and both living rooms and the dining area. The cabin is casual and comfortable, especially the reading nook which also has a gorgeous view of Lake Glenville. We loved having easy access for kayaking, too. We enjoyed our stay very much and we appreciate the hospitality of the owners.

We loved the Red Bear Cabin!

My husband and I rented for the eclipse week and loved the beautiful setting and home. Mike met us upon arrival and we instantly understood why the place is so great. Mike and Mark and their family clearly love the place and have taken great care of it and are "concerned" hosts... they try and make sure you are pleased and comfortable in their home. Mike gave us the tour and some history of the place and pointed out the few quirks which any lake cabin/home will have! This was very helpful in helping us be good stewards of the place. We did not use the bottom floor except for laundry so I can't speak for staying in that part of the house but it seems a perfect home for adults upstairs and kids downstairs. The living room was cozy and comfortable and we used the bright and light dining room more as a reading porch/work area as our weather was great and we were able to eat all our meals on the deck. The deck provided us a great view of the lake and the island across the way. We were far up enough to be able to see everything but close enough to easily get to and from the dock and the lake. Our favorite activity was taking the kayaks out everyday and exploring different parts of the lake. We even purchased an extra night as we didn't want to leave. My sister and husband stayed that night and they loved it, too. There is nothing super modern and fancy about the place which is exactly how a lake place should be. We found it to be perfect and cannot think of any big suggestions for improvement. The kitchen was more updated than I expected and was just right. Grocery store was just four miles away so the ease of access was good. Lake temps in August proved to be perfect. Overall we had a wonderful time and to our surprise I think we had the best eclipse view we could find without gobs of other people being around. It was a fun day and we got especially lucky as the cloud cover parted just in time for the whole thing. We got to see a beautiful "sunrise" at the northern end of our lake view as the shadow moved across the sun. Kayaking to the island one day we witnessed a deer on the beach for a spell before she headed back into the woods. Mike assured me this was a rare sight. There was some highway noise (the downside of easy access) but not enough to disturb us much. Mostly the place is peaceful and quiet except for the boats, which is to be expected. Eclipse day was extremely quiet to my happy surprise. We loved the place and will be back!!
