Lovely stay at the cottage
This charming and historic cottage was the perfect home base for our trip to Ireland's southwest region. Its authenticity provided great atmosphere and comfort for our family's first visit to the country, and our hosts could not have been more gracious and welcoming. They were in close contact during our inbound trip and met us in person to give us an overview of the cottage and its features. The cottage is even more spacious than I was expecting, and it is very well equipped with all the comforts of home. The first half of our visit was day trips to various parts of the region, which included Ring of Kerry, Cliffs of Moher, and Limerick, which were beautiful and easy round-trips from the cottage. After that we stayed close in and visited local historic sites that were recommended by our hosts. We also visited with them at their home and got to hear their very interesting history in both Ireland and the US. We were quite fortunate to have found this lovely cottage during our search, and we look forward to a return visit in the future.

A lovely retreat after a long day of sightseeing
Lovely, well appointed cottage in a great location for exploring southwest Ireland. Located on a quite road, just down the road from the Glenlohane manor, the cottage offers significant privacy. The quite patio is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine after a long day of sightseeing. The bedrooms and living room were comfortable and thoughtfully decorated. It really felt like home. While we didn’t have an opportunity to enjoy the amenities of the manor, there were a couple of outside activities, like croquet, available. The cottage has a washer and dryer which allowed us to do laundry which was wonderful. There is a full kitchen as well. We were able to prepare breakfast in the cottage before heading out for a full day of sightseeing. Kanturk offers a grocery store and a couple of wonderful restaurants, definitely worth exploring.

Deep Immersive Dive Into Irish Culture and History
If the cottage walls, and the old books that line them, could talk, they likely could not match the loquacious performance of our host, Desmond, who regaled us with tales documenting life's adventures across several centuries in this place. From a storied family tradition of equine-centric fox hunts in County Clare to his own role in the initial marketing of Guinness in America and bringing back an American bride to his Ireland homestead, Desmond enthralled us with stories and perspectives on the history of Irish Catholics and Protestants, the latter with more direct British ties, that goes back so many generations in Ireland. The family cottage, as well as the main house, have sheltered Desmond's family for centuries, predating the American Revolutionary war. Today, completely modernized by Desmond without mutilating its historic authenticity, the cottage is a picturesque haven from which to reflect on the vagaries and vicissitudes of human history. We got much more than the expected tranquility; we were enchanted by our host's kind and open hospitality and his fervent spirit of love for all things Ireland. The cottage was stocked with a thoughtful and generous supply of all we needed for our stay, which was capped off by Desmond and Melanie's invitation to a lovely teatime in their kitchen at the end of our three-night stay. Wonderful, cozy, historic cottage
My husband and 12-year-old daughter spent a week at Glenlohane and just loved it! Desmond and Melanie were great hosts and we sincerely regret missing their invitation to play croquet one afternoon. The cottage was exactly as advertised and near perfect-very clean and spacious, yet cozy. It was equipped with everything we needed. As others have already said, we would have gladly stayed much longer. This was definitely one of our best vacation rental experiences. The cottage is ca. 2km from a small town with good restaurant choices and grocery stores. The cottage itself has a great history, and it is a great location for exploring southwest Ireland. We would return to Glenlohane with no hesitation.

The Best Part of a Great Trip to Ireland
Our whole family loved staying at this charming cottage in the beautiful Irish countryside. The owners were exceptionally gracious hosts and made our visit more personal and enjoyable by showing us through the cottage, providing insight into some excellent local attractions and dining locations, and even having us join them at their home for afternoon tea, a few games of croquet, and some friendly conversation. The cottage was very clean, cozy, comfortable, nicely decorated, and perfectly situated for quiet walks along country roads while also providing easy access to many enjoyable attractions. If we return to Ireland, we would not be satisfied staying anywhere else! This MADE our trip!!

County Cork Cottage
The cottage is absolutely beautiful and very clean. It is in a country setting close to the towns of Kanturk and Mallow and within an hour to the Ring of Kerry! Desmond was a true delight! So kind, charming, helpful, and knowledgeable about the area! The cottage is listed as a 2Bedroom but actually has a 3rd Bedroom with a twin bed. My 11yr old twins, husband, and I had a fantastic time! Hope to return!!

Delightful Glenlohane Cottage
We were delighted with this cottage. If you are aware of the Quiet Man starring John Wayne and Maureen O Hara then this is the place for you. It is quaint, comfortable and has everything you need in a beautiful setting. About 3K into Kanturk Town 5- 10 min drive. Front door key was challenging but mastered it. We so enjoyed our stay here. Would recommend. We hope to return.

Cozy, beautiful and perfect
Our family of three stayed here for five days and would have happily lived here forever. Surrounded by rural Irish beauty on the outside, and full of cozy comforts inside. We ate in nearly every night because we loved being there so much. Well outfitted kitchen, great showers, beds piled with comfy linens. A fireplace and fuzzy heated foot warmers take off the chill at night. Our hosts were warm, welcoming and helpful. We've been all around Ireland, and when we come back we have no plans to stay anywhere but here.

Beautiful property, clean, comfortable
Me, my son, daughterinlaw, and my 14 year old grandson spent 5 nights at the Glenlohane Country House the first part of August, 2018. Our hosts were gracious and helpful. This included information on attractions in the area and even a tour of their wonderful estate. My14 year old grandson was introduced to real live chickens, patted some horses, and attempted to commune with some calves who thought he looked really strange. We enjoyed exploring the castle in Kanturk and the ruins in Kilmallock, both of which were very close. Garish Island, which is farther away is also a highlight of the area. The property has a long history. The house started with 2 rooms in the 16th century had has been expanded and updated many times since. It is well supplied and exceptional clean. Beds are comfortable and the fireplace really works. The only downside might be the location which will require some long travel days if you want to see the southern part of Ireland. I highly recommend this property if you have time to explore in a leisurely manner and wish to be treated like friends of the family. One final note: If you visit Blarney Castle (an easy drive), forget about the Blarney stone and its long lines. The grounds are amazing. We spent 2 hours wandering about the place and I took many pictures there. Tour groups will never know what they missed.

Idyllic setting, charming owners who were helpful and gracious, and a beautifully appointed cottage.
Great location. Close to town. Surrounded by rolling fields of barley and hay. Lovely patio with a BBQ. Totally quiet and secluded - but an easy drive to Cork, Dingle, and the Wild Atlantic Way. Charming cottage, charming owners from a family that has made this estate their home for the last 10 generations. generations. Great stories included!

A perfect place to do nothing but relax, reflect and savor the ever-changing skies of Ireland. The Sharp-Bolster family is delightful. They will make you feel welcome and regale you with their fascinating family history. My wife and I loved our stay and will look forward to a return visit. Thank you Melanie, Desmond and Gordon!

Charming Cottage
The cottage is charming and its location provided the perfect for spot for day trips around Southwest Ireland. Gordon was wonderful in giving us the lay of the land and offering advice on our itinerary--what to see (and what to avoid!). Truly, our hosts made the stay for us, welcoming us into what is clearly a very dear spot to the family. Already plotting our return!

About the host

Hosted by Desmond, Melanie or Gordon Sharp-Bolster

Host profile image
This cottage pre-dates my family who built Glenlohane (the main house) in 1741. I came over from America to run the farm as the 10th generation family member to reside here. This is a great shot of my folks sitting out in front of the main house on a warm summer's day.

Why they chose this property

If Ralph Lauren wanted a nice escape from which to see the scenic south-west of Ireland - be it to relax, for a romantic weekend or certainly for day trips and site-seeing, this would be it. Most cottages today are purpose built and lack history. Ours and our family are steeped in it - and you will be as well.

What makes this property unique

Irish history with American comforts. Part of the Glenlohane Estate - croquet anyone? Very comfortable. The best location from which to base your adventure.
