• In summer you can barbecue on the gas grill on the deck, cook in the very large, red brick fireplace (fueled by wood) in the side yard, play volley ball, badminton, & other outdoor games, enjoy the pond, enjoy Goodno Brook's water hole, & small waterfall, hike along the brook in the ravine, mountain bike all around, simply enjoy a walk in the woods, do some photography, & bird watch.
• In fall you will enjoy picking (depending on seasonal variations) apples, pears, & plums in our orchard beside our Brook House & be enthralled by views of incredible orange, yellow, & red foliage that abounds all around & in the mountains.
The Brook House is located on Bethel Mountain Road & it's a 2 minute, 1 mile drive down to the small, beautiful village of Rochester, the center of town, (on the very scenic, Route 100 & the third branch of the White River). There are many points of interest, all within walking distance to the town center:
• The focal point is the "park" with its bandstand for Sunday evening free summer "Concerts on the Park" & Friday's farmer’s market.
• For eating out, there's The Huntington House Restaurant with the casual Doc’s Tavern. A few steps away is Rochester Café, with soda fountain, Maple Soul Restaurant, & Sandy’s Books and Bakery & Book Annex.
• Also is Big Town Art Gallery, Rochester Bicycle Shop & rental, Rochester Public Library, Pierce Hall, classic white Federated Church, Bar Harbor Bank and Trust, Village Grocery Store, Rochester Hardware Store, & gas station with convenience store.
In the town of Rochester (just minutes from the town center) there's interesting things to do still on Route 100:
• There's Pick-Your-Own Organic Berry Farm, town owned tennis courts, an antique & music shop, the Federated Church, a picnic area, & swimming holes on the 3rd branch of the White River.
In the town of Rochester, but off Route 100, adventure awaits:
• Nothing beats the beautiful back roads & incredible vistas of North Hollow & Middle Hollow for sightseeing by car &/or bicycle.
• Julie’s Arc is in the Hollows & is a private barn & land where, when passing by, you may catch a glimpse of an assortment of country animals (& cats) & also exotic animals (llamas, alpaca, etc.).
• You must not miss a free peak down into the very, deep antique green marble quarry, 1 of only 2 in the world.
• Mount Cushman, a mile from the Brook House, can be hiked up along a mountain trail to the top where there once was a fire lookout tower.
• There's a very large trail system in & out of town, organized by Ridgeway, of very many groomed trails for hiking, biking, cross country skiing, etc.
Out of town there are:
• the large Lake Dunmore & Silver Lake for swimming, boating, camping
• several places to rent inner tubes & go tubing down the third branch of the White River
• winter sports (downhill skiing, snowboarding etc.) & it is an easy drive north, south, & west since the house is ideally located equally between Killington, a 25 minute drive to the south & Sugarbush, a 25 minute drive to the north. There is also Pico Mountain, Mad River Glen, & the Middlebury College Snow Bowl. (The latter of which is just a 15 minute drive from the house.) This allows you to try different ski areas, check snow conditions & go to the best ski area.
