Enjoyable restful stay
Had a lovely time. We love the house just as it is, with the more genuine Hawaiian feel. Thanks for a great visit.

A perfect, private feeling location
We loved the private feel of the beach and ocean in front of us - wonderful tide pools at low tide and beautiful sunsets.

Great property, special stay.
The owners have provided guests with a very well equipped property which is wonderfully well located and has excellent support from property manager. The property could use a few improvements for security purposes (difficult to secure one of the sliding glass doors), and cosmetics (oil the cabinets) but otherwise it is a great representative of "old Hawaii". We would definitely request to stay their again.

Nice place on the beach if you are looking for quiet and relaxation
The house is neat, clean, and we were welcomed with snacks, lights on, and Hawaiian music when we arrived after dark. The kitchen had all the amenities we needed and did not seem outdated as someone had previously stated. We totally enjoyed our visit. We loved getting up in the morning and seeing turtles out on the lava rocks during low tide. It's quiet and peaceful here. There are boogie boards, fishing rods and beach chairs to use. This place is on the smaller size, but you are on the deck or out at the beach so much you dont really notice it.

Delightful!
The bungalow is low-key and unpretentious- but is VERY, VERY comfortable. The kitchen is well-equipped - and the house has more than enough quality linens and towels. The WiFi and cable work well. BUT - who wants to spend any time inside? We explored the tide pools and snorkeled with reef fish and juvenile sea turtles. We always came back to the house (we went horseback riding and did a couple of scuba dives) for the sunset. The property managers are very responsive. The only bad thing was that we should have booked 2 weeks.

Unique & Unforgettable Experience
My wife & I have been fortunate to visit the islands on a number of occasions but we've never experienced anything like the stay we just had at this property. Our trip was to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary so we were looking for something fun & unique. This is the closest we will ever get (or want to get) to feeling like Robinson Crusoe lost in a oceanside jungle paradise. The area is extremely quiet/private feeling and is teeming with life both on the shore & in the ocean. Is the actual property a bit older and worn down? Yes....you have to adjust expectations accordingly & not expect the most modern fixtures. The newer king bed in the oceanside bedroom was extremely comfortable & we both got lots of rest. We found ourselves reluctant to leave the property during our stay & spent most of our time at the beach side table or on the large deck....and we both loved our time there. Already looking forward to getting back some day!!!

Excellent Location
Pros: this house has a perfect location on the beach with a nice and shady yard. Cons: as the other reviewers have said, the house is a bit run down and dark inside. In particular, I found the kitchen really outdated and hard to cook in. There were lots of mismatched pots and pans and appliances. And, the stove top is uneven. The living area and eating nook need additional lighting. We had to read with headlamps. However, even with the cons mentioned above, I would go back again. I just loved the location and the house was comfortable despite the issues mentioned above.

Authentic Old Hawaii
We loved, loved loved the location and being in this beautiful spot on the water. And loved that it felt like a comfortable old shoe of a house- just funky enough. I would have liked more lights inside and some updates in the house- feels like it hasn't been touched in many years- but we spent our days exploring the different beaches and our evenings watching gorgeous sunsets and on the porch dining and playing games. Quiet street for walking and access to snorkeling and pleasant waterfront walk to the bigger resorts south of us.

this is a lovely home on the beach that retains the island feel, unlike many mcmansions taking over puako i go to puako once or twice a year and enjoy just sitting, or swimming, or looking at stars. this trip was with my two college roommates from over 40 years ago. we traveled to waimea and the volcano but mostly enjoyed sitting in the yard of this wonderful home

Clean Comfortable House in Great Location
The house is set back from the road and there are large trees on the beach side making this house feel very private. The beds were comfortable and the house was equipped with everything we needed for a one week stay. Great house to share with another couple. The property management was professional and addressed all of my questions prior to our stay. They even sent a referral for an equipment rental service where bikes, kayaks and paddleboards were delivered during our stay (note as of July there was a kayak and oars on site next to the garage). Bikes are recommended as the residential road is minimally used and our teens were able to have some independence by riding to the general store at the end of the road. For almost the same price as renting a condo, this house is the perfect place to experience what most people go to the Big island for.....beach access, turtle watching, snorkeling, sunset and whale watching....but you don't have to fight any crowds to do it and most of the time, you'll have the entire beach to yourself!

Very nice beach front
My husband and I stay in Puako every year. We have stayed in several properties and have rented this particular one twice. It is a large spacious home. The ocean view is wonderful and we enjoyed whale sightings and viewing ocean turtles from the Lanai. The reason for the 4 stars is the property is a bit outdated but comfy and fun. It is a great value for the size and the location. I would stay there again.

Wonderful Vacation Spot
My family has been renting in Puako for 40 years and have finally found the perfect beach house. It is very well equipped, has easy beach access, and has great sunset viewing--perfect. The whales, dolphins, and turtles add much to this pleasurable location. Excellent swimming beaches are short drives down the road.

Why they chose this property

Puako (Pu-ah-ko) is a small, quaint oceanfront community on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island located about 30 miles north of Kailua-Kona and 22 miles north of the Kona airport. The island's largest white sand beach, Hapuna, is right next door.

Puako is conveniently located for visiting all the resort hotels and restaurants on the Kohala Coast. The Mauna Kea, the Fairmont Orchid, the Mauna Lani and Hilton Hotels are just minutes away with their beaches, first class restaurants, shops and world class golf courses. Kohala Divers is nearby at Kawaihae Center, and offers various ocean activities including scuba diving and sunset/afternoon sails. Kawaihae Center and Harbor are just 10 minutes by car, with several great restaurants and shops. You are close to almost any activity you may choose, with the exception of the volcano which is a 3 hour drive.
Puako Beach is a combination of tide pools and patches of coral sand, but there are several fabulous white sand beaches just a few minutes away. Hapuna Beach (voted best beach in Hawaii by Conde Nast Magazine) and Waialea Bay (Beach 69) both are wonderful for swimming, snorkeling and boogie boarding. There is great surfing spot called Paniau at the end of Puako Beach Drive. When the surf is not happening, fantastic snorkeling and scuba diving will entertain you with beautiful green sea turtle, eagle rays, brightly colored tropical fish and one of the most glorious coral reefs in the world.
The neighborhood is called Puako, and it is conveniently located for touring all parts of the island. All homes in this neighborhood are on small acreage, so it is a very low density area. Driving time to the Kona airport is approx. 30 minutes, Kailua Kona 50 minutes, Waimea 20 minutes, Hilo 1½ hours, Captain Cook, coffee country, 1¼ hours, Hawi and Polulu Valley 20-30 minutes.

What makes this property unique

The sun shines 355 days per year and the average temperature highs are in the 80's with low's in the 60's. The ocean's edge is about 150 feet from your doors

Puako offers ideal fishing, snorkeling, diving, surfing and kayaking. Walking and biking is a favorite, too! Sea turtles, dolphins and whales are some of the sea life you may see. Puako offers beach style living and a real sense of getting away from it all.
Puako is rich in Hawaiian history. Walk south along the ocean trail to see the petroglyphs. There are approximately 3,000 petroglyphs scattered throughout the Puako Archaeological Fields. These pictures are etched into the lava rock that dominates the Kohala and Kona Coasts. Access to the Puako Petroglyph Park is through the adjacent Mauna Lani Resort.
The waters around Puako are extremely clear due to the fresh water run off and strong coastal currents. Divers and snorkelers can enjoy waters abundant in sea life along the shallow reef at Puako. The Puako Marine Preserve is a protected environment for endangered sea life. Green sea turtles are a protected species and should not be bothered, only enjoyed and admired. Watch the humpback whales play along the coast. Beyond Puako's reef shelf the whales play and breach during their migration to Hawaii from Alaska. It is quite a sight!
