About this property

Secluded Villa w/ Pool, Ocean Views! Great Snorkeling! Solar back-up added 12/24

Welcome to La Sirena ("the Mermaid") -- your private St. John getaway! At this secluded, charming gem of a property, we invite you to take advantage of the quieter side of the island. Recently featured in the New York Times' special Winter Travel section ("Chilling Out in Coral Bay, Where Even Flip-Flops Are Optional," Dec. 3, 2024), our side of St. John offers an off-the-beaten-path traveler's paradise. Our guests often remark at the absence of light and noise pollution -- the only sound you'll hear is the chorus of tree frogs and birds as you stretch out and enjoy views of vibrant green hills, sparkling turquoise seas, and bright-blue skies.

Take advantage of the quieter side of the island and relax by the lovely pool. With a spacious tiled patio and cabana bar, lounge during the day and enjoy al fresco dining in the evening. At night, revel in the shooting stars from the covered balcony as you gaze out over the ocean, or relax in the spacious screened-in verandah offering cool evening breezes as you watch the moon rise over the lush National Park lands.

The entrance of La Sirena leads you into the villa's kitchen, living and dining area (with table seating for four to six), with an expansive open floor plan where guests can enjoy each other's company while cooking, reading or watching TV. The galley kitchen features concrete countertops and a pass-through window/breakfast bar with stool seating for three. There is no AC in the main living space, but plenty of fans and screened sliding doors for airflow.

Just above the kitchen is the charming sleeping loft overlooking the great room, featuring a queen sized bed. A floor AC unit has been added to "take the edge off" while guests are sleeping, along with fans. Guests on this floor have access to a large full bathroom off the living/dining area, complete with an enormous shower featuring a window looking out to the sea. Multiple sets of sliding glass doors in the main living area lead to the wide covered balcony, where you'll find cooling trade winds and breathtaking southern views of the sparkling waters of Kiddel Bay and the open Caribbean Sea. Also just off the main living area is the spacious and breezy screened-in porch, a wonderful spot to lounge with a book or share breakfast around the second dining area with table seating for six. Guests also have direct access to the covered balcony from the porch, through a screen door near the second dining area.

From the balcony, a spiral staircase leads down to the pool deck and cabana bar/grilling area, and the two air-conditioned master bedroom suites. Each bedroom suite has a queen bed and its own private bath and shower (one is an enclosed outdoor shower with its own private views of the surrounding national park lands.) Both bedrooms have mahogany French doors that lead out to the pool patio area.

This villa's secluded location in the peace and quiet of Estate Mandahl provides exclusive walking access to the snorkelers' paradise of Kiddel Bay. Or, just a few minutes' drive away you can stretch out on the alabaster beaches of Salt Pond or Little Lameshur Bay, and enjoy the unparalleled hikes of Ram’s Head, Drunk Bay, or Reef Bay (to see Saint John's famous petroglyphs!) You may never want to leave your little private slice of paradise at La Sirena, but if you do, the shops and restaurants of Coral Bay are just 10 minutes away!

This unique location's privacy, proximity to nearby beaches and trails, and its short distance from the shops and restaurants of beautiful Coral Bay make it an ideal getaway location for hikers, snorkelers, explorers. You may never want to leave your little private slice of paradise at La Sirena, but if you do, Coral Bay's dining, shopping, boating -- and even the Caribbean's one and only floating taco bar -- are just minutes away.

Please note that due to the staircase and ladder leading to/from the bedrooms and sleeping loft, this property is not suitable for young children or individuals with mobility issues. We added a small floor AC unit for this space in Nov 2024.

****ALL GUESTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO RENT A 4WD VEHICLE (JEEP WRANGLER OR SIMILAR) TO BEST ACCESS ALL THE RUGGED BEAUTY OF "OFF THE BEATEN TRACK" SAINT JOHN!****

****NEW in DEC 2024: We have added a solar array with a battery wall backup system to help fill the gaps during short-term power outages. We also added a new 7-stage drinking water filtration system in the kitchen.****

****ALL GUESTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO PURCHASE TRAVEL INSURANCE WHEN PLANNING THEIR TRIP. This is particularly pertinent during the late summer/early fall when tropical storms are a possibility. Many policies offer cancellation coverage for severe weather, flight or other travel delays and other unexpected events. Your choice, but it's not a bad thing to have.****

Secluded Coral Bay Getaway

This was our second trip to St. John’s and we really enjoyed being on the east side of the island this time. Being able to walk from the house to not one, but two beaches was fantastic with great snorkeling on the right side of both bays. Bedrooms were super comfy, outside shower was fun, and pool was a nice treat after a day on the beach. We grabbed lunch out (Johnny lime’s, windmill bar, skinny legs, lime out) and grillables (fish and kabobs) from the calabash market for dinner back at the house each night. Awesome base camp for exploring the east side and still close to north shore beaches. Highly recommended!

Serene Getaway

This was my our 6th visit to St. John, and our 3rd time staying in the Coral Bay area. This house is exactly what we wanted, off the beaten path in a great location close to hiking trails, beaches, and a short drive to restaurants and shopping. The house is the perfect size and has everything you would ever need. The pool and the backyard view are the best around! It's very secluded, you never hear cars or other people, just the birds and breeze. It is true serenity!

La Sirena on Kiddle Bay

Loved our stay on St John, La Sirena was exactly as expected. The house, patio and pool were all very clean and nice. We had everything that we needed for our weeklong stay. We cooked on the grill, relaxed on the patio and in the pool and really enjoyed everything that the place had to offer. The house is very remote and exactly what we were looking for.

La Sirena, St Johns 2023

Totally amazing, great place, great views, great amenities, everything you could need is provided, short walk and/or drive to beautiful beaches and snorkeling. Location is off the beaten path, so perfect if you are looking to get away from the typical "touristy" stuff, but definitely recommend 4WD vehicle. Full kitchen and grill was really convenient so grab groceries on way in. Really loved it, would definitely book again.

Deserves 6 stars

I can’t say enough good things. Incredible, peaceful, & relaxing hideaway. It was our 1st time on STJ. The owner & property mgr were both exceptionally helpful & responsive. They answered all our questions about cars, groceries, ferries, and the island, and personally took us to the house. The house is amazing! The back deck and pool face east, and we watched the sunrise sipping coffee. It is very private, with only one house nearby that you barely knew was there. The showers have scenic views and one bdr has an outdoor shower. There is a great view of the ocean from the deck. The house is well stocked with thoughtful little touches. For example, the kitchen has a spices for cooking, high quality knives (a bonus for people like us who cook), and lots of leftover containers. Showers had soap, shampoo and conditioner. There were beach chairs, towels and floaties.La Serina is a GREAT place to stay. Some comments about the island/area. The road to the house is no joke! Definitely rent a car with high clearance and 4WD if you can. It’s rocky/bumpy & you’ll be nervous the first time. After that, it’s easy and the road is part of the charm. Rent a Jeep at 360 Car Rentals on St. Thomas & take the car ferry over. Easy to deal with, cheaper than places on STJ, & their cars had off road tires & 4WD – a big plus. Lameshur Bay a must see and close to the house. The beach road is bumpy and rough … but 100% doable in a Jeep in 4WD & worth it. Do not miss.

La Sirena June 2024

Our family loved our vacation on St John and La Sirena gave us the perfect home away from home to launch our daily adventures. The property is very secluded, but still only about a 30-minute drive from the North shore. Tad and Eileen were quick to respond to any questions we had prior to and during our stay, and the local property management company was also great, helping us with recommendations, meeting us on our arrival to show us the way to the house, and walking us through the whole house to make sure we knew the ins and outs of the villa. We found the house, patio and pool were all very clean and in good working order. The house is well stocked with necessities and provided everything that we needed for our weeklong stay, including beach towels, beach chairs, coolers, and reef safe sunscreen. The outside pool area is ideal, including stary nights and evening frog serenades that were quite astounding. During our stay there were rolling power outages due problems at the local power company, but we were still able to cool off in the pool, grill our dinners, and relax on the patio with the ocean breeze. We’d recommend this property to anyone that is looking for a comfortable villa off the beaten path and doesn’t plan on spending too much of their time on St. John in Cruz bay.

Fabulous stay

Spent 7 nights at this wonderful villa! Tad and Eileen were great to work with and quick to respond to any questions we had. The property manager Dena was wonderful and meet us on our arrival to show us the way to the house and then went through the whole house with us to make sure everything was as it should be and point out any little quirky things we needed to know about. The location of the house was very quiet and secluded and oh so serene! If you want to be in the middle of things this might not be a good fit. But it was exactly what we were looking for! The views are great! The amenities plenty! The walk to kiddle bay was not difficult and to drive it was a piece of cake. Definitely need a jeep with high clearance for this property but we never had to use the 4x4. Plenty of seating in the house. The beds were very comfy and the linens and towels were great. Basically I can’t say enough about how much I loved this property and its location! We will definitely be visiting again.

Beautiful breezy private villa

We stayed at La Sirena the first week of July. It was perfect for my family of 3 (mom, dad and teenager). While we were there an early hurricane formed and luckily passed far enough south that we still had a wonderful vacation. The ocean breeze was just beautiful! We spent a lot of our time relaxing at the villa. The pool was really nice! Provisioning with a hungry teen, we did something new this time, renting a jeep on St Thomas and taking the car barge. We stopped at the Cost U Less and picked up snacks and drinking water for the week. We waited to buy cold items and things that we did not need in bulk quantities at Starfish Market once on St John. The kitchen was fantastic with all the pots/pans/utensils/smaller appliances like toaster oven for garlic bread and a blender for smoothies! We ate most meals at the villa but drove to Shambles one evening for dinner and had smoothies from Columbo’s a few times. We were able to snorkel in the nearby bay once which was amazing but as mentioned, the hurricane brought rough seas. We hiked to see the petroglyphs one day, and snorkeled at Maho Bay another day. Another thing we loved doing for the first time was hiking out to Drunk Bay from Salt Pond. We appreciated the outdoor shower and the other breezy not quite outdoor showers. The furniture was very comfortable and we found plenty of towels. There was a washer/dryer as well but we didn’t use it. Really beautiful home! Highly recommend!!! Thank you for sharing it ❤️

About the host

Host profile image
We hail from a very small town Midcoast Maine, where we have raised our two boys. We love Maine's rugged beauty, especially in summer and fall, when we spend our free time on our boat exploring all the nooks and crannies of the coastline and nearby islands. Winter is quite beautiful here -- but can be very long, snowy and cold! We have taken many winter trips to warmer destinations over the years, which is how we discovered St. John.

Why they chose this property

After several trips to St. John, we found that we had developed an affinity for the "quieter side" of the island, in and around Coral Bay. Every vacation we took there fed more into our fantasy of owning a little slice of St. John paradise someday.

We were finally able to make this dream a reality in 2023 when we discovered La Sirena. We immediately fell in love with its unique charm, its comfortable layout, and its ideal location in secluded Estate Mandahl. The neighborhood is incredibly peaceful and quiet, and the villa is tantalizingly close to the water. Best of all, it feels like home to all who visit. We hope you'll feel the same.

What makes this property unique

We know there are others out there who vacation in St. John like we have tried to over the years -- exploring the island's "off the beaten track" beaches and trails. La Sirena provides an incredible home base for many of our favorite destinations and adventures on St. John, including Little Lameshur Bay beach, Salt Pond Beach (both within a 5 minute drive), Reef Bay Trail (to the petroglyphs), Ram's Head Trail, and Drunk Bay. One incredible feature of La Sirena is the fact that you can walk from the villa down to Kiddel Bay, which provides some of the island's best snorkeling. The lack of light pollution here also provides incredible star gazing at night. But don't let La Sirena's tranquility and seclusion fool you -- a night out at Miss Lucy's, Johnny Lime or Skinny Legs is just 10 minutes away by car.
