About this property

Golden Gate Bridge View from Light, Bright Oakland Hills/Montclair Home

Our sunny, secluded Oakland Hills home is perched high in the hills of Piedmont Pines with a front deck providing wonderful views of Marin County, San Francisco, the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge. There are outside tables and chairs for outside dining, plus a gas barbecue. We also have a private back patio with a ping pong table.

The front deck and entry of the house is reached by 18 stairs with two landings. The house has hardwood floors, a dining room (seats 6) and living room with floor-to-ceiling windows with views of San Francisco, Marin, Golden Gate Bridge, Lake Merritt, and Alcatraz. There is also a modern, open-plan kitchen with granite countertops.

The two main floor bedrooms each have queen-sized beds, the child's room off of the master bedroom has a twin bed in the shape of a race car, and the downstairs bedroom has both a queen-sized bed and a twin bed. The main bathroom has a bathtub with shower. The master bedroom with the adjoining child's room both have French doors opening to the back patio. The master bedroom has its own bathroom with stall shower. The house is approximately 1500 square feet.

There are many books and original paintings throughout the house.

You can reach San Francisco in 20-30 minutes by car or public transportation, and the village of Montclair, with its cafes, shops and a Sunday farmers' market, is only a 2-minute drive or a 20-minute (hilly) walk from our house. Berkeley, with its great university and wonderful restaurants, is only a 10-minute drive.

This neighborhood of Oakland is called Montclair. It's in the hills, and although close to city life in Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco, it's quite green and natural here, with many trees, deer, birds (and bird and hummingbird feeders), and hiking trails. We are only a five minute drive up the hill to the vast redwood parks including Redwood Regional Park, Joaquin Miller Park, and Sibly Park. We are well-stocked with brochures detailing the various nearby Oakland and Berkeley parks.

Great House, Great View
Our family of four (kids ages 5 and 8) really enjoyed our stay in this neat house in the Oakland hills. We loved the view of the bay and loved that the home had everything we needed, from kitchenware to kids toys and more. The hosts were super easy to communicate with and very generous with helping to make our stay easy and comfortable. Would definitely stay here again.

Great View
A comfy house with windows across the front of the house giving you a panoramic view of San Francisco Bay. A five-minute drive to all Montclair Village has to offer, and very close to the East Bay’s best parks and trails. The private back deck is a retreat.

Beautiful view!!
The house has a spectacular view of the bay and we spent many happy mornings and evenings on the deck. It is well stocked with anything you might need. They have a lot of fans for the hot days and evenings in August and the air conditioning did cool down things in the evening. We thoroughly enjoyed our time!!

Outstanding scenery in Oakland Hills
The view from this house is spectacular! The owners were a pleasure to deal with- they even “gifted” us their 2 newspaper subscriptions for our 6 week stay. There is an extensive book collection along with lots of lovely paintings by the artist owner. The kitchen is very well stocked. This is a great house if you love nature, reading, art, and cooking!

Breath taking views
My husband and I stayed in this wonderful home from home on the last leg of our Honeymoon. The home had everything we needed and it was so refreshing to find a holiday home that had herbs and spices and all the little things you might need to cook with. The view across the bay was stunning we were far enough to have spectacular views but also close enough to be able to drive and be parked up at Pier 39 in about 25 minutes ( traffic depending!). We spent many of our evenings on the front deck admiring the view and watching the wildlife. We also had a couple of evenings in the hot tub and using the ping pong table! We had a fabulous time and were so comfortable. Thank you for your quick communication and allowing us to stay in your beautiful home.

Warm, inviting home with stunning views and even greater hosts!
This home was absolutely wonderful! My family came to visit my husband and I for the holidays and we all stayed in this house for the week. Everything was just like the photos..especially that view!! On top of that, the kitchen was fully stocked with necessities that were meant for us to use. I loved perusing the bookshelves and paintings throughout the entire place - there's so many to enjoy! From even before checking in, Janet and Kees were so responsive to messages and so kindly even set up a mini crib for our baby. And during our stay they were very easy to reach in case we didn't know how to use something or had any other questions. Their house was the perfect place for my family to spend our first Christmas with our daughter. It truly felt like home away from home :).

Stunning views in Oakland Hills.
My husband and I rented this home twice for two different family weddings. We had our children there with their significant others and our granddaughter. The space was perfect. It was spacious, the kitchen was well equipped, the outdoor area was calming and provided great views. Our granddaughter loved the hot tub. The beds were comfortable and warm. Our hosts were gracious and left us wine and.instructions to use anything we needed in the kitchen. They were responsive to a couple of questions I had during our stay. They made it very easy to check in and out and left us with a detailed book about the home, area, recycling, etc. The only criticism I have is that the one bedroom is in a basement and it was a little damp and musty. I would definitely rent this again.

Wonderful home in the hills with fabulous view of downtown SF, the Bay and Oakland
We stayed here for 2 months when our first grandbaby arrived, over August, September and October. Janet and Kees really opened their home up to us, we felt very welcome and also felt very much ‘at home’ here. The kitchen is set up wonderfully, it had everything needed for family dinners. We had many family dinners out on the great deck overlooking downtown SF as well as inside at the table. The neighborhood where the home is located is fantastic - restaurants, breakfast spots, shops and 2 grocery stores. From the house, it’s easy to get to San Francisco by car or BART. The homeowners graciously included a booklet with everything we needed to figure out where to go and what to do. We were there during a heatwave as well, and it does get quite hot inside late in the afternoon, though on a normal day though it feels good and there is no need to use the heater. We are from Florida, so we are not used to such cool/cold mornings and we loved having the windows open with the fresh air blowing through. Overall our stay was great and we look forward to staying in this wonderful home again so we can take advantage of the terrace overlooking the Bay!

Oakland Visit - highly recommend! Amazing bay view from the balcony!
We loved our stay at this property! It is a lovely, comfortable home and matched this site’s description. Everything you need is there: linens/towels/dishes/utensils/cookware, etc. The home is adorned with original paintings and we all enjoyed looking at them and picking our favorites - not an easy task; this family is very talented! In addition to my family of four (including a 12 & 9 YO), my parents stayed w us for several nights before they stayed at my brother’s house nearby and we all had plenty of room. The bedrooms were very comfortable; my daughter loved the car bed in her “vrooom” 😂. We hosted a dinner for us, my parents, and my brother’s family and it was great! My husband said everything he needed was in the kitchen and we had a delicious meal together. The owners were very responsive and helpful as our trip neared. They even asked the ages of our kids to ensure there were books/games available to them - we learned and played several rounds of dominos during our stay and the kids had fun playing ping pong in the back! The owners also left detailed instructions for refuse, heating/cooling, TV, incidentals, etc. They also left us a wonderful bottle of wine to welcome us! We know the area well but various shopping needs can be met in Montclair. Note that the road the house is on is very hilly/curvy (per usual there) and not best for runs/walks. Lastly, the view from the front balcony is absolutely stunning! Words cannot do it justice!

Spring Break
This house is so adorably charming and inviting! From the incredible artwork on the walls to the beautiful flowers outside, everything about this house makes you feel comfortable. Being able to feed the birds in the morning was a special little treat and we enjoyed being visited by a cute little cat almost daily (he/she stayed on the front deck). Yet again, just a few added touches to make you feel at home. Some things to note for your stay…. The owners were incredible about providing many of the items you generally need for your stay, such as toilet paper, paper towels, coffee filters, etc., etc.. Not every rental provides these so we were very appreciative. Be sure to shut the blinds before you leave for the day. The house does get warm during the day but we would open things up when we got back. With the breeze and cross ventilation, things cooled off quickly. Lastly, be aware that there are no sidewalks and people do tend to zip around quickly. Not necessarily the safest area to go for walks or runs. Very reminiscent of St. Thomas, VI in that respect, if you’ve ever been. All in all we had a great trip and we would definitely stay in this house again if/when we travel to the area again. Thank you!!!

Spacious and amazing view in Oakland Hills with incredible art!
What a wonderful house and very kind folks to easily communicate with! It accommodated our entire family, including 3 kids, wonderfully! Not to mention, being inside is like enjoying a visit to your own little art gallery at all times - beautiful! Indeed, my wife even arranged to purchase a painting as a gift for me. Will stay again if possible when we're back down in Oaktown! Thank you!

About the host

Hosted by Janet and Kees den Breejen

Host profile image
We are Kees and Janet. We've lived in the beautiful Bay Area for over 30 years. We've been dividing our time between our Montclair home and our cabin in Yuba County, California, for the past 15 years. We have two grown sons, one living in New York and one nearby in Oakland, and a 12 year old granddaughter and 9 year old grandson.
Kees is Dutch, born in Delft in the Netherlands, who moved to Canada as a child and then to California. He is fluent in Dutch. He is retired from the San Francisco Chronicle, having worked as a graphic artist, and is now a painter. Janet is a 5th generation California native. She is retired, having worked for many years as an index editor for a legal publishing company in San Francisco. Both Kees and Janet love to travel. They also enjoy having the grandchildren stay overnight once a week.

Why they chose this property

The benefits of this property include the view of San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate and Marin. A secluded setting but is centrally located, 5 minutes from Highway 13 to Berkeley (10 min), San Francisco (30 min) and Downtown Oakland (20 min), Marin County (40 min) Pacific Ocean at SF (1 hr). We are close to many miles of hiking in regional parks nearby. Swimming at nearby Lake Temescal. Near many charming shopping districts with excellent restaurants. Near the University of California at Berkeley (20 min).

What makes this property unique

We love the country atmosphere while being in a city. We like the aroma of the eucalyptus trees and the fog clearing from the valleys. We often encounter deer with fawns, Steller jays and red-tailed hawks and sometimes wild turkeys.
