Week stay with 8-10 people.
We didn’t find out until we fot there that everything runs off solar power or propane. There is a generator if power dips too low. Propane lights throughout the house, but weren't bright enough for evening reading. Truly though, the only disappointment was not catching any fish, and someone was out every day. Didn't even get any bites. Be sure to bring lots of mosquito spray, as there are tons of them in the morning and evenings. The owner touched base a couple times during our stay, to see if everything was ok, which was very nice. He was very quick to respond to any questions we had. If you don't mind the lack of real electricity and being 2.5 miles off the road into the woods, a definite place to check out. Overall, we had a great stay. Very peaceful, and plenty of things for the kids to do between the water toys and game room.

Winter Wonderland
Charlie, was kind enough to accommodate my special request. It was absolutely perfect, we had a lovey Christmas in the woods and the kids had a fantastic time playing in the snow. We had a cozy fire every day and spent the holidays enjoying the beautiful surroundings. The lodge was ideal for our special trip.

A fantastic week at Charlie’s place
We had a fantastic week at Poplar Lake Lodge. Charlie was a great host and filled us in on all the nuances of lake life. We were looking for a private escape out in nature with great fishing and that is exactly what we got. The inside is spacious and equipped with everything we needed, and the inside simply paled in comparison, to what the outdoors offered when you walk down to the lake. We’ve been to many lake houses, and this is the first lake house that had a sandy beach for children, a total game changer. Also, kiddy kingdom was very helpful for our grandchildren as they sometimes get bored with the adults focused on fishing. Thanks Charlie! We will be back.

Wonderful! Peaceful & perfect family friendly getaway!
Vacationed at Charlie's Lodge in July with my husband and four children ages 9, 8, 6, & 4. Everything was wonderful. If you're looking for a remote and peaceful get-away-from-it-all vacation, this place is for you! We only left the property once to get some groceries. There was so much to do! Charlie was very attentive and helpful. We definitely plan to come back!

Relaxation at its finest
We spent a week at this property, enjoying each others company, cooking, playing games, fishing, reading, playing pool, bad mitten, ping pong, campfires and all sorts of sand and water activities. It was a great removal of all distractions and all about being together. If your plan is to just relax, this is the place for you. The bugs were not our friends but Charlie had well prepared us for that and Off Deep Woods bug spray kept them at bay. Charlie does a great job of making sure you understand everything and is available at any time. Great vacation!

PERFECT
This was the perfect place for our annual UP trip! Cabin is roomy and the view of the lake is awesome. Everything you need to cook with is in the perfectly stocked kitchen! We caught some blue bill and bass off the pier. The fire pits are great and having the outdoor chairs by the lake was perfect. The cabin was clean and functional all around. The wood stove was perfect for the chilly last night we were there. We loved the two track to get to the cabin. We will definitely be back!

Modern convivences and comfort in a remote location
Our group likes to be as remote in the wilderness as possible, but as we get older, we also like to be comfortable as well. This place is huge, very well kept and clean. It's the perfect combination of privacy and solitude with a fantastic enjoyable modern home on a private lake. Looking forward to multiple return visits.

Poplar Lake Lodge 2022
We really enjoyed our stay at the Lodge. There was so much to do on the lake and plenty of room inside to spread out. The only thing all future renters should know is that is a 45 minute ride to the nearest store to get anything you forgot. We never left the place after the first day.

Just what we were looking for
The location was as described, very secluded. We had the lake to ourselves. Charlie was awesome! Great communicator and always willing to help! Plenty of things to do inside and outside. Bring bug spray if you plan on going for a walk. I've never seen so many humming birds in one place (right outside the front of the house)!

A week with the Swans
An epically secluded lodge in the UP of Michigan thats everything you need. We brought lots of bug spray, and all the food and clothes we need. We were set, no need to leave the house, unless of course you want to. We took one day to Munising and did the tourist thing of boat tours of the Pictured Rocks. Was an easy and relaxing drive up. Surrounding community is kind and welcoming. The most welcoming of all however is Charlie. Very helpful, responsive, and devoted to you having a good week. I look forward to coming and staying another time, and my parents who came with my family of 6 thoroughly enjoyed it and also desire to come back. Come with an attitude of adventure. And a thirst for relaxation and connecting with your loved ones and the bounty of nature. Titled week with the Swans, for the gorgeous mated pair of trumpeter swans with the 5 egglets we so loved watching this week on the lake.

Home away from Home
We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay during our U.P. vacation. From the communication with Charlie to the fishing in the lake, it was just what we wanted. We ended up catching 7 different species of fish including the Northern Pike. There were multiple things for our family to enjoy and do. Many memories were made during our stay at the lodge. Thank you for sharing this lodge so we could enjoy it!

If you,re looking for remote this is it
The property is listed secluded, this may be an understatement, 30 minutes off the last main road. This was exactly what we were looking for. Charlie is the most amazing host as he meets you at the lodge to go over all the unique features as this is a solar powered house. There were a couple small issues as we were the first quests for this summer, but Charlie quickly solved them and was very concerned about our experience. Make sure you bring everything you need as it is about 45 minute drive for groceries. Mosquitoes are an issue but that's what you expect in the UP during the summer, just bring plenty of bug spray. Nice beach with sandy bottom for the kids, fishing was good, though we were unable to catch any muskie. Overall experience, without Charlie 4 1/2 stars, Charlie brings that up to 5 ++++ stars. Will be going back again.

Quiet, secluded, beautiful, off grid
This place is an absolute hidden gem. Quiet, secluded and exactly what we were looking for. We had 11 people-4 adults, 7 children. The lodge was clean and had everything we needed to cook all of our meals. We brought three big coolers full of food for the week and there was plenty of refrigerator/freezer space. The owner was super nice and down to earth. Communication was great prior to our arrival and on the day of as well. When we arrived, Charlie spent time going over everything about the lodge and property with my husband. The weather was not in our favor most of the week, but we still had a fantastic time. There were plenty of indoor/outdoor activities to keep our kids entertained. The lake was absolutely gorgeous and so peaceful. Lots of fishing and bird watching. The little ones had fun playing on the beach, even though it was chilly. The big kids had a blast in the kayaks and paddle boats. The weather dried out and we were able to enjoy a bonfire the last couple of nights along with some beautiful sunsets. One of our favorite stays and we cannot wait to go back!

Very Remote, Just what I needed!
We had a great time, staying for a week during the peak of fall color. The views from the house were gorgeous. The property is kept nicely, and Charlie has gone to great lengths to make sure there are activities for everyone for both daytime and night time, good weather or bad. The property is centrally located to many different area attractions, not that you would even need to leave the property to have a good time. I would stay here again.

The lodge was quite possibly the best vacation rental we have had. Charlie was always available whenever we had questions. There was so much to do we didn’t have to leave if we didn’t want to. The lake was calm and clean and the kids loved swimming and boating. Would book again if I’m in the UP.

Amazing secluded place
With our group size, 8 adults and 5 children, there was plenty of room in this huge spacious lodge. More than enough activities to keep everyone busy on a sunny or rainy day. (see listing) Being off the grid there are a few housekeeping items that needed to be attended to, but nothing that disrupted the time you want to spend enjoying the property. You will not be disappointed if seclusion and quiet are what you are looking for at Charlie's cabin, and he is a first rate communicator. Thanks from the whole crew Charlie!!

About the host

Hosted by Charlie

Host profile image
I was born in Chicago and came up to the U.P. with my dad to this location during the summer in the 60's. My dad died in 1974 and I continued to enjoy the U.P. In 1990 I moved up with my family and built a 4000 sq. ft. house. After 2 years my wife moved back to Chicago and I stayed. I then opened the property up for guests during the summer and have done so ever since.

Why they chose this property

The most secluded property in Upper Michigan and your own little private resort. No sharing boats, motors or anything else with other guests since there are none. You can 4 wheeler to anywhere in the U.P. right from my front door. I am centrally located, within a hour I have 3 golf courses, 3 casinos, Marquette, Pictured rocks, Escanaba, and Munising.

What makes this property unique

This is one of the largest privately stocked lakes in Michigan( no license required for fishing) and the most secluded location in the U.P. of Michigan with most of the conveniences of home. The 21/2 mile driveway has a locked gate at the beginning of the road. No permanent residents for 5 miles.
