About this property
Hannah's Haven - a private apartment
The property is and up and down duplex. Hannah's Haven is the upper floor unit. I live in the lower unit. Both entrances are accessed from the outside. My youngest daughter, Hannah, lived in the upper unit for 5 years. It was a Haven for her, hence the name. It is in the historic Oakland neighborhood of Topeka. Off street parking is in back, off a well-lit alley. Modern lighting on the street in front makes it well lit, also. The area is mostly residential, but convenient to downtown Topeka, the Capitol and our 3 hospitals. There is easy access to other parts of the city, as well. It is nicely decorated, fully equipped for short- or long-term stays, and has plenty of space for one or two guests.
The space
The apartment has been redecorated and there are lots of windows, so lots of light. The kitchen sink and counter have been upgraded to make cleaning up much easier. The bedroom has a queen size bed and there is a twin size air-bed, the height of a regular bed, which can fit in the living room. The entire space is for for my guests and the separate entrance makes it private.
Guest access
There is a covered patio with furniture next to the detached garage at the back of the property. That is a available for guests, as well, weather permitting.
Other things to note
It's just half a block from The Pizza Parlor, a popular eating place in Oakland, for decades. This new location is large and has lots of TVs, so it's a great place to watch whatever sporting event is a must see. On the other end of the scale is Chez Yasu, a French restaurant with a Japanese chef (who studied in France). It is about a 15-minute drive. The food is excellent and highly recommended by Hannah, who lived in France for a summer. We only go there on very special occasions, but it is worth the higher price. There are other unique places to eat and see in Topeka, which is an easy city to navigate. Just ask me for suggestions and directions. Some of my suggestions are in the house manual you will see when you arrive.
Additional rules
Mutual respect and kindness are expected, and good communication is important for a good host/guest relationship. Besides the purpose of your trip, I need to know the name of any additional guest(s) and their relationship to you. That applies to guests who have been indicated in the booking. Other overnight guests must be approved by the host, and I will want to meet them. I do not accept third party bookings unless booked by a booking agent. A guest may not book from another person's profile, even if they are related. The person with the profile must be one of the guests. The no smoking policy must be strictly adhered to, since I'm allergic to tobacco smoke and can smell it anywhere in or near the house. Also, no vaping. Any use of illegal drugs is strictly prohibited. Marijuana is currently illegal in Kansas. Any alcohol must be used in moderation as to not disturb the host nor the neighbors. No underage drinking allowed. The cost of remedy for damages more than normal wear will be charged to the guest. Quiet hours for both the guest(s) and the host are from 11 pm to 7 am.
Long-term guests are expected to keep the apartment clean. I reserve the right to inspect the apartment at least monthly during a long-term stay of more than two weeks. If necessary, I will inspect every two weeks. The guest will be notified, unless I suspect something is not right. In that case I will inspect the apartment without notice. If inspection shows cleaning is not being done, the guest agrees to have my housekeeper clean the apartment and pay $25 per hour.
ATTENTION: By requesting or booking you confirm, to the best of your ability, that you or any other guest has not been ill, nor shown any signs of Covid-19 in the past 14 days. You also agree to notify me if you are experiencing any symptoms on the day of check-in or anytime during your stay. I will do the same for you. The up-to-date list of symptoms may be found at cdc.gov. I will provide you with a listing which is cleaned and sanitized and will have no guest occupying the apartment at least 24 hours before check in.

About the host
Hosted by Elinor Cowell

I'm a retired teacher, enjoying life. I like to learn new things and spend time with friends and family, though my 3 daughters and their families live out of state. That's mostly my reason to travel. Lunch, movies, and events with friends are my local pleasures.
Why they chose this property
Oakland is a diverse neighborhood, which appealed to me when I bought the house in 2002. I have had no reason to change my mind. It's easy to get anywhere in Topeka. We have a revitalized downtown with lots of good restaurants and an events plaza. https://www.visittopeka.com/ lists all the events. The interstate is close enough to get me to my church in Lawrence or to Kansas City and beyond.
What makes this property unique
My property is well maintained and has the charm of an older house, with lots of big windows. The upper unit has been declared cozy by many of my guests.
