Originally built in 1880 and later expanded to its present four bedrooms, living room, and dining room, this two story house retains its historic dignity, but has been embellished over the years with certain structural eccentricities that give it antique charm. That quality - a crooked window here, a slightly unusual door there - prompted the owners' daughter, on her first visit, to remark about it: 'This looks like a house Dr. Seuss could live in.' And thus it immediately was dubbed 'Dr. Seuss,' the designation on a plaque on the front porch and in a Dr. Seuss print just inside the front door.
Just a few blocks from Lexington's beautiful and historic central district, Dr. Seuss sits immediately next to Lexington city hall, adjacent to Washington & Lee University fraternity houses, and the Lexington visitor's center. Dr. Seuss is steps away from a variety of engaging retail shops, an abundance of excellent restaurants, carriage rides, history walks, movies, and other entertainment.
The historic and beautiful campuses of Washington & Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute are within easy walking distance, as are parks, gardens, and walking trails.
Visitors to Dr. Seuss can relax on the front porch and watch the world pass by, or grill and picnic in the backyard. The house features a spacious living room, a dining room with reading nook, and a fully equipped kitchen.
There is one large bedroom and bathroom with shower on the first floor, as well as a laundry room with washer and dryer. The second floor features two large bedrooms and one smaller bedroom, all with queen size beds and dressers. The second floor bath has a shower/tub combination. It's perfect for housing guests for W&L or VMI graduations, weddings, or family gatherings and treks through the Virginia countryside or events at the Virginia Horse Center. Please note that large parties are NOT permitted.
Dr. Seuss doesn't have granite countertops. It doesn't have designer wallpaper. There's no wide-screen tv or plush embroidered bathrobes in the closets. It lacks a wine cellar (but there is a cellar). What is does have is a happy, unassuming nature, a relaxing ambience, and a great location from which as many as eight people can visit this most beautiful Virginia town.
